True The Vote: A Success Story That Deserves To Be Told

A letter from Catherine Engelbrecht, Founder and President of True the Vote

Our Republic flourishes when citizens are confident that theirvote is free, fair, and secure. Yet, according to a recent survey

by The Washington Post (August 12, 2012), 81% of respondentsbelieve that fraud in our elections is a very real problem. Thisgrowing concern presents a clear danger to our entire system ofgovernment; eroding our trust in elected leaders and underminingour confidence in the system by which they govern, beginning atthe polls and rising up through the highest oces in the land.

The risk of fraud is inherent in our electoral process, as evidencedby the loopholes, double standards, voids of accountability,and incompetence that has been ignored, institutionalized andexploited for personal or partisan gain. Those who we entrust withour vote must be held to the highest standards.

It was this strong conviction, that we must have a basic trust in our

electoral process, that gave way to what has become a nationalelection integrity movement, led by True the Vote.

True the Vote was established in 2009, after a small group ofvolunteers worked at our local polls and witnessed firsthand boththe need for well-trained election workers and blatant, undeniableacts of election fraud. In three short years, True the Vote hasgrown into a national organization of citizen volunteers; providingcomprehensive, state-specific programs of education, research,and support for volunteers in all 50 states.

True the Vote has also become the leading, oftentimes theonly, voice on election integrity issues. In fact, True the Votesemergence on the scene changed the national debate. We have

empowered fellow citizens, increased public awareness, builtstrength for continued election improvements and reforms,and significantly weakened the false and misleading messagingof those who insist voter fraud does not exist and who haveheretofore controlled the narrative.

As you read through the pages of our annual report, we hope youwill gain a better understanding of who we are and what we do.Our purpose is really very simple - to remind voters that they arethe safeguards of our representative democracy. Together, we canensure that our voting process truly does reflect the will of thePeople. Together, we can True the Vote.
