done.

The Art of Weather Forecasting

• If the oak is out before the ash, twill be a summer of wet & splash

• But if the ash out before the oak, twill be a summer of fire & smoke.

Page 4: 2012 Union Springs Grower Meeting Presentation

But then again, scientists got it all figured out….

• Scientists wanted to observe what it was that caused man to become drunk

• Observed one man drinking scotch and water

• Observed another man drinking whiskey with ice

• Finally observed a third drinking a Twisted Ice tea

Page 5: 2012 Union Springs Grower Meeting Presentation

Well, the conclusion is obvious…

Water was the common item in all drinks…water makes men drunk

Abe Lincoln summed it up

• It seems in Springfield the weatherman was having a bad streak of weather prediction

• Town mayor was approached by a young boy who said he could tell him what the weather would be

• Mayor figured why not give him a try…..

• Young boy got the first storm right, then the second, then the third and fourth….!!!!

Page 8: 2012 Union Springs Grower Meeting Presentation

• Mayor was surprised and very impressed

• Considered firing the weatherman

• Approached the boy and said he was thinking about offering him the job of being the weather forecaster

• Boy said, “Oh no, sir, t’was not me, you see.

It was my donkey. He always rub his ear on the post and brays terrible whenever a storm is buildin’.”

• “So,” Abe said, “the mayor appointed the jack ass,

And that was the mayor’s mistake…….

Page 9: 2012 Union Springs Grower Meeting Presentation

Ever since then jack asses have been running for office…..

Your Business• Manage all the tools that ultimately aid in

producing that gallon of milk

Labor costs

Rolling stock—tractors, harvesters, planters for how many acres?

Feed per acre

Milk per ton

“If I could make milk without raising feed I would do it in a heart beat.”

Page 25: 2012 Union Springs Grower Meeting Presentation

As long as you need to grow feed:

• Make full use of the ability to organize and utilize the different pieces of information

• Maximize your production and minimize your cost of production.

• Take the first step and do a farm technology review and assessment

• Begin laying the foundation this winter

Confusion???

You have a legitimate reason!

•Time constraint•Labor issues•Equipment breakdowns•Variable soil types

Form of Nitrogen Formula Availability for plant uptake

Nitrogen gas N2 Although 78% of our atmosphere is nitrogen gas, this form of nitrogen

must be transformed to usable forms before it is available for plant

uptake.

Ammonia NH3 Ammonia is a gas. Ammonium can escape from the surface of the soil

under certain conditions and is harmful to plants in high quantities.

Ammonium is the basic building block of commercial nitrogen fertilizers.

Ammonium NH4+ Soil particles attract and retain ammonium on cation exchange complexes.

This form may be directly taken up by plants.

Nitrate NO3- Nitrate is the second form of nitrogen which is available for plant uptake.

In most soils, nitrate is highly mobile. However, in the highly weathered

soils of Hawaii, nitrate is stored in soils with ‘anion exchange capacity’ and

becomes less mobile.

Nitrite NO2- Nitrite is an intermediate product in the conversion of ammonium to

nitrate (nitrification). It is usually present in low quantities, but is toxic to

plants.

Organic Nitrogen Various

compounds

Organic nitrogen must be converted to ammonium before it is used by

plants. This conversion occurs with time and is known as mineralization.

And We Know That Nitrogen Types Differ

A Prilled Process with out any heat

•Ammonium Nitrate—directly available•Ortho Phosphate—the most available form•Sulfate of Potash—very low salt, provides

sulfurAll of these forms are ingredients in water soluble fertilizers.

Ammonium Nitrate will not volatize and can be Taken directly into the plant.

Attaches to negatively charges soil particles to helpAid in leaching.
