2012 Design StandardsSummary of Major Changes Effective July 1, 2012

08/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.In this session we will discuss the updates to the Maintenance of traffic 2012/2013 and the 2013 Design Standards. As we know by know that the 2013 standard index was published in July 1st , 2012 and will be effective January 1st , 2013.3Effective July 1st ,2012High-Visibility Safety Apparel4Shall meet ANSI/ISEA 2010 and 2004 No changes to the Performance Class scheme Requirements for rainwear background fabric Changes related to design features Optional criteria for Flame Resistant items Guidance on service life of apparel08/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.The safety vests updated to ANSI/ISEA 2010 requirements, 2004 garments that are serviceable are still ok. When we order new garments require 2010 label.

08/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.The designer has the option of using rumble strips. Index 600 sheet 4 shows the removable Polymer Rumble stripson a 2 way 2 lane facility lane closure flagger operation. Effective January 1st ,201308/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.Note one and two have been modified. The notes explicitly calls for the use of 24 by 36 sign for several businesses share one driveway. 15Index 600 Sheet 1116TEMPORARY LANE SEPARATOR

Effective January 1st ,201308/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.Note 5 has been modified to give the contractor the option of using portable temporary lane separator containing fixed channelizing devices. Payment for the temporary lane separator has been modified from Maintenance of Traffic lump sum to Linear feet16Index 600 Sheet 1117TEMPORARY LANE SEPARATOR

Effective July 1st ,201208/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.Added to the 600 index , the Longitudinal Channelizing Devices (an empty water filled Barrier) can be used interlocked or stand alone in lieu of Drums or barricades. If used interlocked no sheeting is needed and if used stand alone, sheeting is required. Lights are required. Minimum height of 32 inch.

Effective January 1st ,201308/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.Added to the 600 index note 12 , the pedestrian Longitudinal Channelizing Devices. The pedestrian LCD must be used interlocked. top of the device.anchored or ballasted to withstand a 200 lb lateral point load at the device must be at least 42" in height above the walkway and bedevice shall have a footprint or offset of at least 2, otherwise the same vertical plane. Effective July 1st ,201208/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.Index 619 multi lane Mobile operations work on shoulder, work within Travel way has been modified to require additional TMA (truck Mounted Attenuators) for more than two lanes facility in each direction. I would like to stress on note 5: traffic control officer is required on freeway facility for night time operation.

26Concrete Barrier System Index 414

Effective July 1st ,201208/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.27Added alternate design notes to include types of barrier, for example, Steel Barriers Steel Barrier System Index 414

08/06/12Design Standards#Ezzeldin Benghuzzi, P.E.28This is a detail out of index 415 showing a crash cushion abutting 4 units of type K barrier . If we look closer to the type K barrier we notice the stakes are in the barrier side closer to the traffic. We do not need to show staking pattern in the plans. The contractor should get this information from the standards index.
