5Compelling Reasons

Oneof the first issues that an agent must con-front when starting their home based travel agency iswhether to use a host agency or go independent. Thereare substantial benefits enjoyed by both paths and eachindividual must decide what is best for their business.

Generally, agents newer to the travel business choose togo with a host agency or franchise option, while estab-lished agents tend to elect operating independently. However, this is constantly changing in today’s environ-ment where technology and new distribution opportuni-ties are evolving. There is not one right answer for agentswho are considering this aspect of their agency, but thereare several benefits to each route. To make matters evenmore confusing, some agents work with multiple hostagencies, while others make a decision to work througha host agency for some transactions and to operate inde-pendently for others.

As you can see, finding your way through the maze mayrequire some free thinking on your part. Each individualbusiness has its own unique challenges and opportunitiesand the right answer for you may be completely differentthan for anyone else. Following are 5 compelling reasonsto consider each option and hopefully they will allow youto arrive at a suitable conclusion and objective.

5Compelling Reasons to Use a Host Agency

5

Support and Community: I suspect that the number one benefit of workingthrough a host agency is that you have a built-in support network and a communi-ty of other agents also working through the host that you can connect and net-work with. Operating a home based travel agency can give one a feeling of iso-lation and by having a cadre of agents in a similar situation, it can really helpeliminate the isolation factor. Also, having seasoned agents to draw from for theirexperience and knowledge is a great way to greatly improve your viability toyour clients.

Operational Relief: Most new agents don’t understand the burden of accounting, bookkeeping, filing, banking, managing finances and the myriad of operationalduties that makes a one-person operation so challenging. Using a host agency thatdoes most of the more complex operational tasks behind the scenes frees up theagent to sell more travel. Most host agencies will offer automation and a simplifiedoperational interface with the agency. This benefit alone will make a huge poten-tial impact on an agent’s productivity.

Commissions: Most host agencies gain overrides (extra commissions) based ontheir network’s productivity with any given supplier. As an example, a hostagency may earn 16% commission from a cruise line by virtue of the network’sproductivity. Even on a 70/30 commission split an agent may make more work-ing through a host than directly with a supplier at the normal 10% commission(16% x .70 = 11.2% commission). Since profit is the objective of every agency, this is a major consideration.

Consumer Technology and Leads: Many host agencies offer consumer websites thatare branded around the individual agent. The host keeps the content current, whichleaves the agent more time to sell travel. Some host agencies offer consumer leads totheir agents and this is an excellent solution for experienced agents that know how toclose sales. Leads can become a very important aspect of a host / independent rela-tionship.

Ease of Entry: Especially for newer agents, a host agency can make it possibleto start selling travel immediately. Since all aspects of the agency are fully devel-oped, there is no need to spend time organizing an operation, contacting andnegotiating promotional programs with suppliers, creating a website and other

2012/13 Co-Op/Host Agency Guide

such tasks that a host may provide you from day one. If you are newer to the indus-try and want to get started selling travel efficiently a host agency or franchiseoption may be your perfect solution.

Establish Your Brand: If you are specializing in a narrow niche of travel establish-ing your brand and value proposition within the industry will help you create therelationships that are so necessary for your success. Suppliers of niche travel prod-ucts are quite anxious to work with agents that specialize in their niche and willdirectly enable you to effectively sell their products. By working directly with thesesuppliers you can offer your clients a level of service that you may not have beenable to accomplish working through a host agency.

Commission: By operating directly with suppliers you will not be splitting commis-sions with a host agency. If you are specializing in a narrow niche, suppliers mayoffer extra commissions as an incentive to receive a disproportionate revenue sharewithin your niche. Because of your specialization productivity overrides may bemuch easier to achieve because of the narrow focus of your business. While youmay lose the advantage of a network’s revenue when it comes to overall commis-sions, you may gain exceptional commissions based on your own productivity.

Co-ops and Consortia: By operating independent of a host agency you may electto join one of the industry Co-ops or consortia to gain both marketing support andhigher commissions. Many host agencies depend on one of these groups for theirhigher commission levels that are split with their agents, but you may be able tojoin directly and retain the full commission.

Grow Your Business: Once you have established your business it becomes quiteeasy to then grow it in any number of directions. You can add independents ofyour own by acting as a host agency or add employees depending on what yourneeds become. By having existing supplier relationships it becomes realistic tothink that by expanding your revenue with them, you may also expand your com-mission level and promotional support package, as well. This will all lead togreater profitability and success.

Control Your Business: By operating independently you have complete controlover your business and may change directions upon a moment’s notice. This playsan important role when world events affect the very nature of the travel industry. You have complete financial control over your business and may choose withwhom you do business giving you an element of security in difficult financial times.

I started traveling solo at the ripe oldage of 12 when my dad pre-tipped thetrain attendent to look after me on athree-day trip aboard the Santa Fe

Super Chief from Chicago to Phoenix. It must have left an indelible mark on

my memory because I didn’t stopthere. I’ve learned a lot about the joysof solo travel and I’d like to share this

with you in hopes of giving you the con-fidence boost and enough great rea-

sons to get you to cruise or travel solo.

A few months ago I wrote about howto travel solo. Now here are my rea-

sons why you should try it, even if onlyonce. Warning…parts of this may be

considered PG 13, oddly funny or total-ly hedonistic. We solo travelers tend to

be that way.

Traveling solo has its advantagesSolo travel pushes the envelope for most people. We’re a

“couples” society for the most part and those that hit the

road by themselves are sometimes looked on as a bit

odd. Or brave. Or adventurous. For me, the last two

adjectives are the most accurate. Traveling solo doesn’t

mean an all-night singles party and a singles’ cruise isn’t

the same as cruising solo.

10 Reasons Why You ShouldCruise of Travel Solo

Why I prefer to cruise or travel solo...

10. Do what you want, when you want. No more having a long, drawn out debate. You’ve dreamed about swimming with dolphins butyour Significant Travel Companion (the STC) would rather squeeze intoborrowed, too-small aqua shoes and hike the waterfalls. Someone usual-ly has to acquiesce.

9. Meet new people everywhere you go. One of the most reveredmemories I bring home after a trip are the people you meet along theway. But, if your STC isn’t outgoing or worse still…doesn’t like or feelthe need to socialize with total strangers but you do, there goes a valu-able opportunity to meet new, possibly life-long friends. You’ll be stuck.Best case scenario; you’ll both meet the same people, and you, being thesocial one, willl simply end up lugging a dead weight around with you forthe duration of the trip. Solo travel, anyone?

8. Get invited to join others. I’ve learned to request a table forone when I’m on a cruise. When I’ve asked for a table seating ten or thesingles/solo table, I’ve still been seated with four newlywed couples. Atable for one solves the problem very nicely. You’ll find that people atclose-by tables kind of look at you with a quizzical eye as if to ask, “whyis that person dining alone?”

Page 11: 2012/13 Co-Op/Host Guide

Co-Op/Host Agency Guide 2012/13

9

Be prepared because out of nowhere the maitre’dmay come over and say that table so-and-so would liketo know if you would join them for dinner. You can ofcourse accept and suddenly have eight dinner compan-ions that actually want you to join them.

If this isn’t something you’d like to do on a nightly basisthen this is the perfect opportunity to meet new peopleyet graciously mention that dinner is the time that youlike to reflect on the day’s events or something like that. However, it’s important to note that I’ve met lastingfriendships on several long cruises this way and I gladlylearned to do my day’s writing at a different time so thatwe could meet for cocktails and dinner. The same canapply to shore excursions and on tour buses. Great wayto meet people and you can see as much or as little ofthem as you’d like.

7. Sleep with the TV on all night. Or nap whenyou want without interruption. Need I say more.

6. You choose the restaurants. One of my favorite memories is of wandering aroundCivitavecchia in search of a small restaurant for lunch. After passing by a Subway store and a couple of touristjoints, I found an out of the way cafe where for sure Iwas the only American in the place. Had I been withsomeone, we might have ended up at Subway or at aplace mobbed with tourists. Bring your e-reader, smart-phone or something to do should you find that you feela bit self-conscience.

5. Homestead without having to claim-jump.  Nomore having to  divvy  up the drawers, negotiate thehangars, section the closet or create a mini-Maginot Lineon the counter top.Hang up all of your clothes, if you wish. Line up your toi-letries in the bathroom instead of always rummagingthrough your hanging tote kit. Totally unpack for theduration and not have to fold and stack half of yourclothes on closet shelves.

4. Take your time in the bathroom. Whateveryou’re doing in there, take your time. Take a longershower after a strenuous day exploring ancient ruins. You won’t have to worry about putting anyone out to

have to find a public bathroom either! (“Are you almostfinished in there?”)

3. The electric plugs are all yours. Two peopletraveling together usually means one laptop, two cam-eras, two phones and two phone chargers, maybe atablet or e-reader and on and on. Usually there are onlytwo or three available outlets to use to charge eight ornine devices. No more having to do rock, paper, scissorsto see who gets to charge what electronic device first. They’re all yours!

2. Look over all of your terrific stuff you’vebought. You can display all of your shoreside purchaseson the empty bed or sofa. Shopping for woolens inNorway? Maracas in Mexico? Italian leather in, well, Italy? It’s so much fun to unpack your treasures and set themout while you decide who will get what souvenir whenyou get home.

1. And my number one, totally ridiculous reasonto travel solo? You can build a zoo with your towel ani-mals! If you haven’t cruised lately, the towel animals thatyour room attendent leaves on your bed at night aregetting pretty fancy. At one time, the towel monkey on ahanger attached to a ceiling tile was considered extreme. Now there are elephants, ducks, manta rays and pigswith snouts. It’s actually fun to set up a display and take aphoto of all of them on the last night of your cruise. Andno one to say, “Oops! So that’s where my towel is!” anddestroy the terrycloth critter.

N.B. If you find yourself talking to any of theseadorable yet inanimate creatures, maybe you’re just notcut out to be a solo traveler.

Yes, I’ve gotten a little silly here with the towel ani-mals, but only to emphasize my point. Solo travel, whether by choice or necessity, isn’t for everyone. I’veknown people who would rather fall off the earth thaneven sit in a restaurant by themselves let alone take anescorted tour or a cruise.

But if you should ever try it, you’ll find that travelingsolo instills confidence and will drag you out of yourcomfort zone. Solo travel imparts a sense of wonder andsatisfaction in knowing that you could actually go it aloneand have the most wonderful time ever.

When TRAVELSAVERS openedits doors in the early 1970s, the ideaof independent travel agents organiz-ing into a cooperative or consortiumwas relatively new to the travelindustry. The group’s primary goal was tohelp its agencies increase their marketshare as well as their overall profitabili-ty. 2012/13 Co-Op/Host Agency Guide

By Susan FerrellPresident

Travel Experts was established 23years ago. The company’s policy of paying 100percent commission with a high level of sup-port has made Travel Experts the program ofchoice for the best agents in the industry. TravelExperts has grown slowly but surely over twodecades, as its program is not a good fit forevery agent. Conversely, the company isextremely selective in those agents it accepts.

Travel Experts is owned 100 percent by SusanFerrell. Her philosophy, and that of her man-agement team and support staff, is that theirIndependent Contractors are their clients. Thecompany views them in the same way that anybusiness owner views his or her bestclient–making sure they provide what theirclients need and thinking ahead to how to bestserve them. Travel Experts understands thateach agent is an entrepreneur, and the compa-ny is truly respectful of the business they havebuilt. Above all, the Travel Experts team worksto foster a relationship that will last for years.Travel Experts is a member of Virtuoso, ASTAPremium Member, CLIA and NACTA.

Travel Experts has over 220 IndependentContractors. Many come as referrals from exist-ing agents. Their selection is based on sales vol-ume, their vision for their business, theirapproach to client relationships and their refer-ences. Most of its Independent Contractors

have been in the business for more than 15 years. Many deal strictly withhigh-end leisure, while others have strictly corporate accounts and somehave a mix of both. All are of the mindset that maintaining client relationshipsis the most important aspect of their business.

As a Virtuoso agency, Travel Experts offers its marketing programs. Interestcoding and advisor personalization allow Independent Contractors to speakdirectly to their client’s travel preferences and lifestyle. Virtuoso membersreceive thousands of dollars in free supplier-funded marketing every year.

A full-time tech expert on support staff will assist with any technical issuesthat Independent Contractors may encounter. An extensive Intranet websitefeaturesvolumes of information. In addition, the company has a site forarchiving RFIs (Requests for Information) with search capability, and utilizesThinkTank software for regular discussions and information sharing. Anextensive menu of sales reports for Independent Contractors and/or theirclients is provided at no charge.

There also is no charge for training. When an Independent Contractor joinsTravel Experts, he or she is invited to the company’s office for a few days atthe company’s expense. During that time they meet the staff, go through thecompany handbook and website, participate in Sabre training and receive anintroduction to Virtuoso.

On a weekly basis, Travel Experts offers supplier presentations, Sabre and/ortech updates broadcast to all Independent Contractors via Webex. Thereare also unlimited educational opportunities available through Virtuoso.

Independent Contractors are encouraged to participate in anything andeverything Virtuoso, including Regional Meetings and Travel Mart, whichTravel Experts partially underwrites. At Travel Mart, the company has brain-storming sessions or supplier-sponsored get-togethers for just the TravelExperts attendees.

The monthly fee for membership is $550. Independent Contractors receive100 percent commission.

Insurance: YesInterview with Joanie Ogg, past president of NACTAHarvey, your agency has been hostingtravel professionals since 1981. Thatwould undoubtedly make you one ofthe trendsetters in the field and certain-ly your companys longevity andstrength is to be commended. You and I have been friends and col-leagues for many years now and wehave both watched the home-basedchannel change and morph into one ofthe industrys leading sales channels of dis-tribution. Could you share with our read-ers some chunks of wisdom about whatthey should or should not be looking forwhen they choose a hosting partner? When choosing a Host Agency, lookfor one that: •Is large enough to give you the bene-fits of strong industry ties and support, but not so large that you get lost innumbers. • Will not attempt to steal your clients • Is financially stable •Has been in business a long time andpays commissions on time, every time •Ask if you are allowed to work direct-ly with supplier BDMs. Are you isolatedand/or limited to the questions you canask a supplier?
