CAMPUS (CONNECTION) IN THIS (ISSUE) License Plate Update on Page 2 (MACM) Happy summer to all of you. I’m always excited to finally be able to eat ice cream outside and not be cold! I love summer. I hope God’s blessings are with you and His presence is surrounding you. Do you listen to that “still, small voice” that speaks to us? I have been hearing God call me in a very different direction and I did not understand what was going on. I wondered if He was calling me to another church when I received a call from a district superintendent in another state. After the interview, I heard Him say, “No.” So then I wondered what He did want me to do. So I continued to listen, pray, and dig into the Word, and soon He opened a door to an opportunity in finance. So, I have joined the world of bi-vocational pastors! I have no idea what He is doing with me, but I know He is here in my presence. Deuteronomy 4: 29-30: “But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice.” It’s exciting to follow Him and NOT know where we are going. I pray that you, too will have an open heart and mind to listen to God and live a life following in His footsteps. I am so pleased to feature one of our alums in this article. I had the pleasure of speaking to Rev. Ryan Mackey, M’09, this week. Ryan is currently a professor of music and theology at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan. He teaches music history and music technology, and once a year teaches a class in the theology program. He has taught the Gospel of John and Spiritual Formation. He also helps out in the Campus Ministry office. In addition, he serves as the Pastor of Spiritual Formation at The Father’s House in Hutchinson, Kan. Ryan was ordained as deacon in April 2006, then in December 2006 he was ordained as priest in the Christian Communion International family of Christian churches and worship communities. Before he enrolled in the MACM program, he was an adjunct instructor in the music department at Central Christian College. Happy summer to all of you.

When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice.”

It’s exciting to follow Him and NOT know where we are going. I pray that you, too will

have an open heart and mind to listen to God and live a life following in His footsteps.

I am so pleased to feature one of our alums in this article. I had the pleasure of speaking to Rev. Ryan Mackey, M’09, this week. As of June 25, the Alumni Office learned that the Friends University state license plates were shipped from the Division of Vehicles to all Kansas county tag offices. This means that by the time you read this issue of Campus Connection, the plates will be available to pick up from your local county tag office!

A supplemental order for Sedgwick County has been placed as of July 16. If you did not pre-purchase a plate from the University, you can still purchase one “over-the-counter” next time your tag comes due.

If you have any questions, please contact the Alumni Office via email at [email protected].

Fall 2012 • (MACM)

At Central Christian, Ryan heard about the MACM program and realized that the means to his future calling was attainable in his own backyard.

Ryan enjoyed the MACM program and gave several reasons: 1) He appreciated the open view of the Christian faith explored in the program, and 2) he appreciated the professors’ investment in him personally and pastorally, as well as academically. He has recommended Friends University to several of his friends and one of those friends is attending right now.

If you were in the program with Ryan and would like to contact him and renew a lost acquaintance, his email address is [email protected]. I’m sure he would be interested in hearing from you.

And speaking of that, please let us know what you are doing now and how your life has changed after your MACM degree. I would love to feature you in the next article.

There are several newsworthy items you might be interested in knowing. If you are looking for a new career, Friends University is using an online job database system called Simplicity. The system is free for students, alumni, and employers. To access this site, visit https://friends-csm.symplicity.com.

Also, $200 Legacy scholarships are being offered for the 2012-2013 academic year to children of alumni and former students who completed at least 12 credit hours. To request an application, contact the Alumni Office.

Friends University celebrated the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. T.J. Arant, March 30, 2012. The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Garvey Gymnasium in the Garvey Physical Education Center.

Approximately 600 students, alumni, parents, friends and members from the local community were in attendance, along with nearly 50 delegates from visiting colleges who showed their support.

Rodney Pitts, G’82, chair of Friends University Board of Trustees, presided over the installation of the president, followed by Dr. Arant’s inaugural address.

Music was provided by the Friends University student brass quintet, the University Concert Band and the Singing Quakers.

A cocktail-style reception in McKay Gymnasium at the Casado Campus Center followed the ceremony, with music provided by the Friends University jazz ensemble and string ensemble. Guests enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres provided by Sodexo catering services.

This historic occasion was a rare opportunity to highlight Friends University and its place within the realm of higher education and the regions it serves.

Faculty SpotlightIn this issue of Campus Connection, we are pleased to feature Friends University Associate Professor of Business and director of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduate program, Dr. Jay Johnson.

Since first coming to Friends in 2009, Dr. Johnson has increased the size of the University’s MBA program from 140 students to 270 students, making the program the largest on campus, with approximately 10 percent of the student body.

He also implemented an all-online program, an MBA in accounting and a CPA track, as well as compiling more data for further improvements.

“I always have something cooking,” Dr. Johnson says of his plans to further improve the MBA program.

In his free time, Jay enjoys golfing, travel, watching TV, movies, and visiting his family farm in Missouri a few times a year.

If you know someone who may be interested in learning more about the MBA program, feel free to have them contact Lisa Haggard, manager of Graduate School Recruiting Services via email at [email protected].
