VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEW PUBLICATION!

Keen to get involved in Law Society but don‟t know how? Interested in journalism or the publication process? Want to put your writing or editing skills to use?

The Administration Portfolio is seeking an Editorial Team for an exciting new publication expected to be released in Semester 2! It will be a publication focusing on the student experience and so we require enthusiastic and dedicated students who can demonstrate:

Effective communication skills in contacting sources and writing articles on key events such as ALSA, Law Ball, etc;

Utilisation of strong teamwork skills;

Attention to detail in ensuring articles are grammatically correct and free of spelling errors;

Meeting deadlines - deadlines for articles and pieces of interest will be discussed and set;

Initiative and self-motivation - coordinators will be given a large amount of responsibility and accountability.

This is a great opportunity for you to work independently and demonstrate initiative as a significant amount of responsibility will be delegated to the selected editors and you will be expected to attend Skype meetings on a fortnightly basis. If you have design talent we would like to hear from you too.

Seeking volunteers for the Schools Legal Education Group (SLEG). SLEG is a social outreach initiative with a 32 year history at UNSW. Law student presenters from UNSW attend high schools to provide useful legal information to students on a youth to youth platform. We provide training and all materials. We‟re looking for volunteers to sign up for one or more classes to be scheduled during Semester 2, from 6 August to 19 September. Please register your interest by 1 June here. FACULTY INTERNATIONAL MOOTS AND COMPETITIONS SESSION

Students will be speaking about their experiences in these competitions. All aspiring competitors are encouraged to attend. Please contact Frances Gibson (Director of Experiential Learning - Faculty of Law) for more details.

ALSA CONFERENCE-MELBOURNE

In July 2012, Melbourne will be hosting the Australian Law Students' Association annual conference between 9th - 16th July 2012. This conference will see over 500 law students descend on Melbourne for a great number of activities. The UNSW Law Society is providing subsidies for General Delegates to the cost of $650. The full cost of General Delegate Gold Conference passes is $850, which means successful applicants will incur the costs of $250 to attend the Conference (plus flight costs). Applications for subsidies close on COB 28th May. Successful applicants will be notified by 4th June. The application form for general delegates to receive a UNSW Law Society subsidy can be found on here. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FROM SOUTH WEST SYDNEY REQUIRED

We‟re looking for some student volunteers to help us in organising a fundraising dinner that will be held later in the year for the Ngoc Tram Nguyen scholarship, as part of a UNSW Law Alumni Committee initiative. The role would broadly involve liaising with members of the UNSW Law Alumni Committee in relation to the organisation and marketing of the event, in addition to assisting generally on the night. This would be a great way to contribute to a very worthy scholarship and meet members of the alumni network.

HEADSTART MENTORING LAUNCH

When: Monday 28th May, 2012 at 6PM. Where: Corrs Chambers Westgarth (Attendance by invitation only). NSW YOUNG LAWYERS – HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE

The latest monthly bulletin of the NSW Young Lawyers Human Rights Committee has been released and it contains plenty of exciting opportunities for students to become actively involved in the Committee. Whether it be joining one of the many working groups run by our members or attending one of our upcoming events, the Human Rights Committee is always looking for motivated young lawyers or students who have the passion and desire to drive exciting projects which make an impact. The Human Rights Committee is dedicated to achieving its objectives of:

raising awareness about Australian and international human rights issues, including the Rule of Law

lobbing and commenting on legislative and policy changes at both federal and state levels

providing education to the legal profession and wider community about Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

The Committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month at the Law Society Building, 170 Philip Street Sydney. For further information, please visit our website here. The bulletin for April 2012 can be accessed here. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 13th June at 6pm. NSW YOUNG LAWYERS INTERNATIONAL LAW COMMITTEE

The Young Lawyers International Law Committee seeks to promote informed discussion amongst their members on international law in Australia and to provide a distinctive Australian perspective on contemporary international legal issues and developments. Membership is open to young

lawyers working in the field and law students who have an interest in international law. Students can find out more about the Committee at the NSW Young Lawyers website, and can join the Committee by signing up to the mailing list. The Committee has monthly meetings, held on the last Thursday of every month. The next meeting will be held at 6pm on the 31st of May, at the NSW Law Society (Level 2, 170 Phillip Street, Sydney). Coming to a Committee meeting is a great way to meet young practitioners, build your professional network, and score some free pizza, wine and cheese. The Committee will also be holding a number of events in coming months, including an international law careers event on the 9th of August, and an international arbitration moot in Semester Two. UNSW LAW SOCIETY SUMMER CLERKSHIP PRESENTATION SERIES 2012

Are you considering a career in an Australian law firm? Do you want to know more about the top Australian law firms before you apply for a clerkship? VOLUNTEER COURT ASSISTANTS SOUGHT: DOWNING CENTRE LOCAL COURT COMPLEX

Where: Downing Centre Local Court Complex 143-147 Liverpool Street Sydney When: between the hours of 8 a.m. & 6.30 p.m. on the First Friday of each month and whenever there is a fifth Friday in any month. Neither prior knowledge nor experience of any kind is required. This opportunity is not PLT compliant. Successful applicants shall undertake the below listed duties in a group of four to six students selected from a roster of such students on each day under the direct personal supervision and direction of Robert Nixon, The sole practising solicitor providing this volunteer opportunity

Roles include:

Interview in detail potential clients taking detailed notes on all that one discovers in such interviews;

Take detailed notes while Robert Nixon, the solicitor interviews each actual client in detail;

Assist Robert Nixon, the solicitor providing this service, to prepare any matter for hearing by undertaking detailed legal research and other nominated tasks;

MOCK TRIAL MAGISTRATES ASSISTANT

Essential Requirements:

Excellent spoken English when under high pressure;

Excellent comprehension of others spoken English when spoken and comprehended under high pressure;

Excellent ability to both read & write English under pressure;

Hold a current drivers' license with the use of a car when required;

A land line phone connected wherever one is living at any time with easy and regular access to such phone when needed;

Experience as a participant in the NSW Law Society's Mock Trial Program when in high school;

Studying law at university currently either as part of a combined degree or alone. Successful applicants shall assist Robert Nixon, one of the NSW Law Society's Volunteer Solicitor Mock Magistrates in the performance of his role in judging any mock trial allocated to him during the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at minimum on any day Monday to Friday (excluding school & public holidays) at any allocated high school where such trial is to be held. Successful applicants shall jointly perform with the mock magistrate all the duties listed for the

LONG-TERM VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY

Linkz is partnering with the Central Australian Youth Link Up Service (CAYLUS) to support their programs delivered to young Indigenous people and the broader community as a whole. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a long-term understanding of remote community life while playing a meaningful role in the delivery of important programs and services. What will volunteers be doing?

Volunteers will be integral to the everyday running of a popular local computer and internet room in the community, as well as providing support to the Youth Program more generally.

Volunteers will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week, 30 of these being contact hours with the majority spent supervising the computer room use and helping with any issues that arise. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to bring new ideas to the community.

Costs & Dates All costs for volunteers will be covered, including flights, transport and accommodation. Additionally, volunteers will receive approx. $200/week to cover the cost of their food and will have the opportunity to travel to Alice Springs once a month. CLAYTON UTZ BEGINNERS NEGOTIATION COMPETITION REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Learn the art of negotiating with the 2012 Clayton Utz Beginners Negotiation Competition. The competition is open to law students who fulfil the following criteria:

Firstly, you are either in your first, second or third year of your undergraduate studies or not in your final year of your graduate (JD) studies; and

Secondly you have not competed previously in a negotiation competition

The competition is conducted in pairs (one form between two). However, if you are unable to find someone, register on your own and we will attempt to partner you up. You may register here. The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot

Court Competition is one of the most traditional and prestigious moots in the world, having been around for over 50 years.

Over 500 teams from 87 countries around the world compete annually at the Jessup, with around 130 teams advancing through the international rounds in Washington DC.

UNSW has a grand tradition in this competition, and we invite you to be a part of it.

Participants compete first in the Australian National Rounds held in Canberra in early February, with the final held in the High Court before one High Court judge and two other eminent judges.

The finalists proceed to the International Rounds held in Washington DC in late March / early April.

The problem always involves at least four complex issues, and takes the form of a case before the International Court of Justice.

Teams prepare written and oral arguments for both applicant and respondent states.

Students selected for the Jessup team are expected to not undertake work or other commitments during the summer vacation.

An information session will be held on May 31st at 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE SIR HARRY

GIBBS CONSTITUTIONAL LAW MOOT

Applications open to compete in the 2012 Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition. Application deadline: 30th May 2012 at 5pm. The 2012 Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition will be held from Thursday 11th of October until Sunday 14th of October. The Grand Final will be judged by the Honourable Chief Justice Robert French AC in the High Court of Australia. In addition to the competitive side of the competition, there will also be a number of social events run over the course of the four days. This will include a cocktail evening, karaoke night/pub crawl and the Closing Gala Dinner. UNSW will be registering up to two teams, comprising of either two or three members each. The question will be released to competitors the week following close of registration, allowing two months preparation before the competition for all teams. Applications are available here.
