Assistant CoachesKelly Cheshier | Assistant Coach

Kelly Cheshier returns for her tenth season as an assistant coach for the Bellevue University softball team in 2012. Cheshier’s main responsibilities for the Bruins involve working with the pitching staff, their development and signal calling.

Before becoming a mainstay on the coaching staff, Cheshier played two seasons as a Bruin in 1999 and 2000, earning NAIA and NFCA All-American status. Cheshier ranks second in school history in slugging percentage (.694), third in batting average (.409) and fourth in home runs (20). As a pitcher, Cheshier has the

lowest earned run average (ERA) in program history, 1.43, in 309 innings pitched. She posted a two-year career record of 37-12.

In addition to her playing accolades, Cheshier coached Omaha Gross Catholic High School for four years, which included two Nebraska state tournament appearances. Her other credentials include a three-year coaching stint at Omaha Skutt Catholic High School from 2000 to 2003.

Cheshier and her husband, Eric, live in Omaha with their two children, Cyrus and Haley. She also works for Bellevue University as a Virtual Admissions Specialist.

katie Lefler | Graduate Assistant CoachKatie Lefler begins her second season as a graduate assistant on the Bellevue University softball coaching staff after a two-year standout career with the Bruins.

Lefler was a two-year starter in the outfield, earning first team all-MCAC honors in 2009 and honorable mention accolades in 2010. She ranks seventh in school history with 14 career home runs.

An excellent student, Lefler was a member of BU’s Dean’s List. She majored in health and human performance with a minor in coaching.

Lefler will primarily be responsible for working with the Bruin hitters and outfielders.

Michala Cimino | head CoachIn her first two seasons as the head softball coach at Bellevue University, Michala Cimino has guided the Bruins to back-to-back MCAC regular season and tournament titles, and has yet to lose a conference game (22-0).

Cimino, the two-time reigning MCAC Coach of the Year, has compiled an overall record of 64-36 (.640) and has led Bellevue to two straight appearances in the NAIA National Softball Tournament.

She has coached 11 first team all-MCAC players as well as two MCAC Players of the Year, two MCAC Pitchers of the Year and two MCAC Newcomers of the Year.

In her first season, she guided Bellevue to a 32-17 overall record and led the Bruins to their fourth appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.

After helping guide the University of Nebraska at Omaha to 12 consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances as an assistant coach, Cimino became Bellevue’s head softball coach on July 1, 2009.

Cimino, who replaced Bellevue athletic director and softball coach Ed Lehotak, became just the second head softball coach in school history.

In her 12 seasons as an assistant coach at UNO, the Mavericks won seven North Central Conference titles and compiled a record of 559-184 (.752). Nebraska-Omaha won at least 30 games every season during Cimino’s stay at UNO, highlighted by the Mavericks’ 2001 national championship.

Cimino also enjoyed a stellar athletic career at Nebraska-Omaha from 1993-94 and was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. She led the Mavericks to a third-place finish in the 1994 NCAA Division II National Tournament and, in the process, was named to the all-North Central Conference and all-Midwest Region teams. In addition, she was named to the all-tournament team at the 1994 NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament and the 1994 NCAA II National Finals. In only two seasons as a Maverick, Cimino set several school records, including most home runs in a career (18) and most home runs in a season (15).

A native of Omaha, Cimino earned her Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Nebraska-Omaha in 1998.

She was married in August, 2004, to Kurt Cimino of Omaha.

Bellevue UniversityThe Bellevue University Avantage: Small classes, many optionsBellevue University is a world-class leader in adult learning, serving more than 15,000 students at 12 locations in five states – and everywhere online, through its award-winning learning platform. The University is a proven leader in meeting the unique needs of working adults and recent high school graduates.

With the option of online courses and Fridays off, you will have plenty of time to fit it all in – school, sports, maybe a part-time job, even getting away for a weekend road trip.

At Bellevue University, you’ll enjoy small class sizes. Small classes facilitate an exchange of information with other students, and ensure that you’ll get personal attention from a professor who knows your name. And you won’t have classes taught by teaching assistants at Bellevue University – only credentialed faculty who know what it’s like to compete in the career world. You can access a wealth of study and reference materials through the Freeman/Lozier Library, with more than 105,000 volumes, 5,200 current periodical titles, and access to many more reference works through the University’s online library.

The possibilities are endless – you can take courses online or learn in a classroom setting, choose your program class by class or follow a set program with the same group of classmates, and prepare yourself to excel in one of dozens of fields. Check out the options!

Recent accolades from peers, students, and

professional associations demonstrate the University’s commitment to serving the needs of adult learners and organizations. Leadership Excellence magazine ranked Bellevue University among the top 20 schools in the country for developing leaders, along with Harvard, MIT and Northwestern, to name a few; Bellevue University boasts more MBA students than any other college or university in the state. Modern Healthcare magazine compiled a list of the nation’s largest master’s healthcare programs – and Bellevue University ranked No. 1. Most recently, the United States Distance Learning Association awarded Bellevue University the prestigious 21st Century Best Practices Award.

The University offers more than 50 undergraduate majors, as well as 15 master’s degree programs. Bellevue University understands that not all learning takes place inside the traditional classroom, which is why many of the University’s courses incorporate a blended curriculum, supplementing on-campus instruction with online resources. Students combine coursework with professional experience and are able to earn their degree in three years. The University’s Career Avenues initiative helps students reach not only their academic goals, but also their career goals.

Bellevue University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the same organization that accredits schools such as Michigan, Northwestern, and Notre Dame.
