When you think about the month of May, do thoughts of
Mother's Day and Memorial Day come to mind? There is a
lot more to May than deciding what gift to get your mother
or what to serve at Memorial Day barbeques. There are
other holidays during the month, many famous people
celebrate their birthday in May, and many historic events
took place during the fifth month of the year.
May is named for the Roman fertility goddess, Maia. In ancient Rome, May was the third
month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the fifth month
of the year. It is one of the seven months with thirty-one days.
As the birthstone for May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is
believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth.
Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in
Greek, was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Today, most of
the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan,
and Zambia. The availability of high-quality emerald is limited;
consequently, treatments to improve clarity are performed
regularly.
May birth flower is the lily of the valley. The lily of the valley
has the flower meaning of humility, chastity, sweetness and
purity. The delicate white blossoms of the lily of the valley
bloom snugly between the broad leaves.
Lily of the valley is a native of Europe. It has a flower
meaning of the return of happiness. This May birth flower
is used often in bridal arrangements for the sweet perfume.
Lily of the valley can be grown is sun or shade and is a
beautifully fragrant groundcover. Lily of the Valley has also been used in herbal medicine
as a poison antidote, for the heart and epilepsy. It is a favorite flower among brides and
party planners as it is a wonderfully elegant flower. Lily of the valley is one of the most
delicate and beautiful of the lily family.
According to legend, the lily of the valley came into being from Eve's tears after she was
kicked out of the Garden of Eden. The May birth flower is also called "the ladder to
heaven" due to its bell shaped flowers hanging down from the stem. The lily of the valley is
also known as "fairy ladders" in Ireland. The lily of the valley is known for its delicate
white flowers and light fragrance. It is the may flower on May Day on the European
continent especially in France.

May Holidays and Observances
Mother's Day is the most well known holiday that takes place in May. It is
celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday which commemorates the Battle of Puebla
in Mexico. The Mexican militia was victorious over the French army in
the battle that took place in 1862. Cinco de May means the 5th of May
in Spanish, so naturally it is celebrated on May 5th.
The Kentucky Derby is held on the first Saturday in May. This famous horse
race dates back to 1875. The race takes place at Churchill Downs in Louisville,
Kentucky.
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was observed
on May 30th. It is a day to remember those who have died in service
to our nation. In 1971, the observance of Memorial Day was changed
to the last Monday in May.
Historic Events in May
The first official Memorial Day was May 30, 1868.
The Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine during WWI on May 7, 1915.
Charles Lindbergh made the first solo flight across the Atlantic on May 21, 1927.
The Germans surrendered to Italian allies during WWII on May 2, 1945.
May Quotation
Then came fair May, the fairest maid on ground,
Deck'd all with dainties of the season's pride,
And throwing flowers out of her lap around.

Vice President’s Article
I was talking to a colleague at work on the subject of Home Owners’ Associations. He
described his HOA as extremely ineffective, with absolutely no negotiation efforts on
rent and other important issues. He further painted a picture of a community where the
outside public had free access to come and go, with frequent parties and operation of
radio control airplanes nosily zooming through the air.
All I could feel was immense gratitude for all that we have here at Lake Hammock Village.
We are surrounded by great neighbors who have so much in common. Wonderful activities
and folks willing to pitch in to make them happen. A citizen’s Patrol cooperating with the
Sheriff’s Department to help keep our community secure.
I am honored to serve on a HOA Board that deliberates with efficiency and respect for
everyone. I thank our President for his thoughtful approach to all concerns expressed by
the residents. I thank all my fellow neighbors for their efforts to keep a happy,
respectful and harmonious atmosphere in our village. A great ball of cooperation is rolling
today, and we all keep it going with, what I am pleased to note, continuous lighthearted
assistance.
In the words of Garrison Keillor at the end of every Prairie Home Companion.
“Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.”

Your Grand Marshalls of the Easter Parade were so surprised and happy to have had the
honor. It was fun being driven through the streets by Chuck & Marleigh Osborn in their
lovely decorated convertible car with the Grand Marshall signs. We want to thank the

great event. Thanks chefs for our delicious lunch and all others that willingly helped.

EASTER PARADE
Lead by the Easter Bunny and followed by the Grand Marshalls and many decorated golf carts, the parade was enjoyed by everyone! The Grand Marshalls were two great ladies of LHV, Betty Rhoades and Vivian Keller. What a great way to begin with wonderful ladies that LHV residents love and respect! To all the ladies with beautiful bonnets – Thank You. The winners were Joanne Marco, Cynthia Nolt and Ruth Ives with their fantastic bonnets. Once again the golf carts were decorated with great imaginations, beautiful colors and some provided music along the parade route. All carts were great and the winners this year were Goulds, Smiths and Landers.
The parade concluded at the lake with well over 100 LHV residents and guests who truly enjoyed the free lunch, great conversations and fun together! To the HOA who provided the great and delicious lunch, KUDO’s to all and thank you for your cooking efforts and hard work. It was enjoyed by all!! To all the volunteers and workers, thank you seems inadequate! You did a great job and it was appreciated by everyone! We are looking forward to 2014 and a bigger and better parade! Any
suggestions will be well noted and considered. THANK YOU, Jerry Butler

Moms and Grandmas
Before I was a Mom -
I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how
late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth
every day.
Before I was a Mom -
I cleaned my house each day.
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom –
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Spit on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom –
I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom –
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put it down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom –
I didn’t know this feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn’t know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
24
Before I was a Mom –
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was ok.
I had never known the warmth,
The joy,
The love,
The heartache.
The wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much before I
was a Mom.
Remember that behind every successful mother……
is a basket of dirty laundry.

Do You Know Anyone Like This!!!!!!!!!
An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years.
He had a large pond in the back.
It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe
courts, and some orange, and lime trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for
a while, and look it over.
He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women from the local college skinny-
dipping in his pond.
He said "hi" so as not to scare them and make them aware of his presence and they all
swam over to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out of this pond until after you
leave."
The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make
you get out of the pond naked....'
Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator.'
Some dirty old men can still think pretty fast.
