SEAL OVER 60’sThe Over 60’s meeting was held on May 11th in Seal Village Hall starting at 2.30pm. Several members were off sick so all best wishes go to them hoping they will soon be in good health again. We then welcomed new members. A clipboard went round for names for the July outing to Eastbourne. Our speaker was unable to come so we had a Quiz, made us use our brain and caused much laughter. The representatives of the Lions Club came and gave out containers for medical information and next of kin etc. To be put in and then kept in fridge for Medico to find in an emergency. Tea & Raffle followed. Next meeting June 8th will be on Birds by Ray Harbour. B.Arnold

BIG BATTLEFIELD BIKE RIDE 2013 for HELP FOR HEROES

By the time you are reading this I am probably already pedalling my way back to blighty. I'm cycling along with 2 of my friends; our very own hero fund raiser Maggie Fox and another newbie like myself, Jane McFarlane. On the 27th May I travelled with over 300 like-minded fundraisers from London to Paris by Eurostar. We are cycling back to London via some of the WWI and WWII battlefields in the Somme, arriving back in London 2nd June. Amongst our riders there are several veterans from Afghanistan as well as serial H4H fundraisers. I’m trying to raise over £4000.00 so please do check out my charity page and donate. http://www.bmycharity.com/carolinenimmo2013 Upon my return I will show some photos and give you a full feedback of what I hope to be a wonderful experience.

PLAXTOL LOCAL HISTORY GROUP MAY 2013 MEETINGInstead of the anticipated talk on Eltham Palace, our speaker Mr. D.H.Williams gave a talk on Old London. The wide ranging talk covered the period from the Roman occupation to the Great Fire of London with many illustrations and several points of interest. He brought with him two helmets from his collection of armour, one called a morion that would have rendered the wearer completely deaf and almost blind on the battlefi eld. At our AGM, Rosemary Foster stepped down as chairman and Haydn Puleston Jones was elected to succeed her. Rosemary was warmly thanked for being an outstanding Chairman for the last 14 years. Under her leadership, the History Group carried out a remarkable number of major projects, including transcribing and publishing all the available Plaxtol Censuses and historic Parish Registers and researching and publishing several booklets on village history – Rosemary’s previous experience in publishing was particularly invaluable in this context. She leaves the Group in very good shape, with high membership and attendance at meetings and healthy fi nances. Rosemary will be very much missed as Chairman, but we are

delighted that she has agreed to stay on as a Committee member. Her encouragement and enthusiasm for projects, combined with her natural charm and good humour, have greatly contributed to the success of the History Group. V.DussekOur next meeting after the summer break will be on Tuesday10th September at 8pm when Tony Singleton will talk on The Wealden Cloth Industry.

SHIPBOURNE FARMERS MARKET : JUNE

With the recent drawn out cold winter and spring finally behind us this should be the month when everything really starts to grow. With sun up at 4 am and setting at 10pm growers and producers are at full stretch and the fruits of their labours is now be in glorious evidence at the market. So make sure you make the most of all this wonderful bounty and fill your basket with the very best the county has to offer! For growers one of the biggest indicators of our late spring was the delayed start to the asparagus season. Asparagus is now in full spate but the season will be shorter than normal so don’t miss out on one of the joys of our climate – sweet tender spears of asparagus picked and cooked the very same day. Try it traditionally steamed with melted butter or if the weather gives us some warm June days, griddle the spears on the barbecue brushed with olive oil until tender then scattered with shavings of a sharp hard cheese such as Lord of the Hundreds. Other veg to look out for are crisp radishes, spring onions, spinach, and of course NEW POTATOES. And if the weather is right there may be early cucumbers, runner beans and courgettes, alongside all kinds of salad leaves now in season. It’s also the ideal time to plant out ‘ready to plant’ herbs and summer bedding plants. The long days and the warmth also herald the start of the great English soft fruit season with STRAWBERRIES in abundance. Try some of the finer flavoured varieties rather than the more robust berries grown to withstand the rigours of the supermarket supply chain that may not have the same flavour. Ditto the finest local CHERRIES (Kentish cherries are justifiably world famous), gooseberries and, just possibly, the earliest raspberries. A favourite way to serve raspberries, cherries and strawberries is to crush them slightly, sprinkle with a little Kentish cherry brandy or Italian vin santo and sugar then leave to macerate for an hour. Serve spooned over vanilla ice cream. (see the recipe below for amounts) Annabelle’s SPRING LAMB will be available towards the end of the month and a boned out shoulder or leg is perfect on the barbecue or simply roasted and served with baby new potatoes and minted broad beans and peas. On the fish front it’s really has to be mackerel – bought silvery fresh from the market and

cooked the same day to enjoy at its very best. Try it the traditional way for the month – grilled and served with a tart gooseberry sauce. Also good this month are lobster, plaice, sardines and clams. Aim to plan a wonderfully labour free picnic if your visit to the market coincides with a sunny weekend. Fill your basket with one of Jo’s pâtés or Scotch egg, add a loaf of Rusbridge’s bread baked that day, Wendy’s chutney, a bag of Gary’s cherries and maybe a punnet of strawberries and you are all set. Marinated summer fruit with vanilla ice cream(This recipe is taken from The Busy Mum’s Vegetarian Cookbook by Mary Gwynne published by Simon & Schuster £20)Basically summer berries soaked in booze. An instant completely marvelous way to finish a summer supper outside in the garden. You are using fortified wines here so it should not be consumed by small children or drivers – you have been warned! Try Pedro Jimenez sherry, which is supremely dark, rich and fragrant, or locally made Cherry Brandy from Kent. Serves 4Prepare 5 minutes plus 2 – 3 hours marinating• 50g (2oz) caster sugar• 650g (1½ lb) mixed summer berries; strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries• 6 - 8 tbsp Pedro Jimenez sherry, cherry brandy or Vin Santo• good quality vanilla ice cream• homemade hazelnut and lemon biscotti (recipe in book)1. Wash and prepare the fruit. Halve the strawberries if large and stone the cherries if using. Crush lightly with the back of a spoon. Place in a large bowl and sprinkle with the sugar. Pour over the sherry, cover and leave to chill for 2 -3 hours. 2. To serve spoon the fruit into glass dishes and top with a scoop of ice cream. Drizzle some of the fruit and sherry juices over the ice cream and serve with biscotti. For more local food stories, market news and recipe ideas visit Mary Gwynne’s blog at www.trufflehound.wordpress.com. Mary will be doing a cookery demonstration on preparing an easy summer picnic with recipes taken from her two Busy Mum’s Cookbooks at the Wealden Times MidSummer Fair on the 7th June in Rolvenden, Kent. To all dog owners.......My dog pilgrim was seriously hurt when involved in a fight with several dogs, walking in Seal Recreation Ground. It was not clear which dog was at fault. As a result it has made my poor dog extremely nervous and now runs off.If you put a yellow ribbon on your dog it tells other dog owners that the dog needs space when out. It may be a number of reasons: Pup in Training, Very Nervous, Old and Grumpy. Recovering from an Operation, Blind or deaf, In season or just unwell. If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon please give them space. This will go a long way to keeping your dog happy and not to feel intimidated resulting maybe in a fight. We are all responsible dog owners and responsible for their behaviour. Some dogs are naturally aggressiveand some are nervous and just want to be left alone. This is why this scheme is so important to every dog owner. Introducing The Pog BlogI’ve been writing here for a while now, about my cycling escapades and (when the weather has been bad / I’ve been lazy) about my cat. Unbelievably though, I’ve run out of things to say about both. Instead, Julian, the lovely publisher here, has said that I can take random extracts from my blog each month and hopefully entertain you that way. There is nothing I find more annoying though, than reading someone’s blog and knowing nothing about them, so to give you a little context, I live with Norman, my cat, in a teeny tiny house I refer to as Pog Towers. In the week I work in London doing things I won’t bore you with, and at the weekends I (very occasionally) cycle, sew and do the usual family and friends things. Whatever I do, elements of daftness seem to follow me. It’s that sort of thing I’ll be posting here. And if you want to read more you can find my blog at: http://thepogblog.wordpress.com/I often post a ‘Lessons of the Week’. These are things that have happened to me that others may learn from (like the fact that matching one Mini Egg for one grape as your dinner does not make a balanced diet. It’s just a recipe for feeling a bit sick) or can just laugh at. Like this one:It can be quite amusing when the man from Orange calls you up with ‘amazing offers’ and you decide to play along. This one went something like:Him: How many of you are there in your house?Me: Me and Norman.Him: Does Norman have a mobile?

Me: No, he doesn’t.Him: Well we could offer Norman a really good deal on a handset due to your custom.Me: You could?Him: Yes we could offer him <I can’t remember the details>.Me: I don’t think Norman really wants a mobile thank you.Him: He won’t get a better deal anywhere else.Me: I’m sure he won’t. It’s just he’s missing the required opposable thumbs to make full use of the offer.Him: Sorry?Me: Norman is my cat.Him: (wistfully) We could earn a lot of money if we could teach cats to use

mobiles.Credit where credit is due. That was quite a good response. So there you go. Try it next time you get a random call – it’s certainly better than my usual ‘thanks but no thanks’! Helen

The Pre-Raphaelites in SevenoaksPart Two

In the last edition of the Advertiser, we looked at the visit to Sevenoaks by the famousPre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Hol-man Hunt. There was a sequel to all this Sevenoaks activity at the end of the decade. We have already seen that Sir John Millais (as he became later) knew all about his friends‘ trip to Sevenoaks, although it is not clear whether he too visited them there at the time. But in 1863, after he had married Ruskin‘s former wife Effie Grey, Millais wanted a proper setting for his painting ‘St Agnes Eve‘ for which - says the old Tate catalogue - ‘Effie modelled the heroine Madeline, who undresses in the moonlight, watched secretly by her lover Porphyro‘. They stayed together in Sevenoaks throughout that December at ‘a wayside hostelry’. As Lord Sackville confirms in his recent book ‘Inheritance‘, this scene was painted in the King‘s Bedroom at Knole, then ‘a large house tenanted only by a caretaker’, as Millais’ daughter later described it. Here again the weather took its toll. She goes on, ‘a death-like stillness pervaded the apartment. - a silence that might be felt at the midnight hour when the moonlight was streaming in through the window and no fire was burning on the hearth. And yet that was the time when the picture must be painted - that and a few hours later - otherwise the exact direction of the moonbeams falling on the figure could not be caught. No wonder, then, that my father, though by no means a nervous man, was sensible of a high state of tension while sitting at his work for three nights in succession among such weird and comfortless surroundings. My mother, for it was she who sat for the figure, was similarly affected, while her discomfort during those weary hours may readily be imagined. Think of the slender garments in which the figure is draped, the bodice unlaced, the room unheated; and this in the depth of winter! No wonder that she was accustomed to speak of it afterwards as the severest task she ever undertook’. But the picture was a great suc-cess, and later found its way into the Royal Collection, although it has had to be rescued from the Tate reserve for this exhibition.Other echoes of the PRB trip to Knole Park also followed as late as 1881, when Rossetti’s sister Christina (poet and painter herself) came back to Sevenoaks. As our earlier article in the December 2012 Advertiser explained, she wanted a house where her sick brother could come to convalesce in the country. After looking at several, in-cluding one she liked, now identified as The Grey House in Church Street, Seal, next door to the vicarage, she wrote to her brother on 22 July 1881: ‘Knole Park is not open to visitors in carriages, only to pedestrians - but one may drive through Wildernesse Park, and pretty it is … and there is a quiet, pretty village named Seal. I wonder whether you recollect any of this?’ and she then sent him details of the house. But alas Rossetti did not like the idea of living next door to the vicar and never returned to Seal.
