Welcome
This presentation is aimed at four audiences:1. Executives of companies that may be interested in licensing the
technology.2. Potential investors (restrictions apply as per slide 7).3. Potential master franchise operators/partners in NZ and Australia for (1)
sun-shade & light-roofs and (2) half round barns.4. The general public for interest, and because everyone reading this is a
potential future customer for solutions using this technology!

I am Simon
What I am going to present to you here is Flex-mechanism - a patent pending technology which I think may amaze you, in terms of it’s simplicity and very wide application. Oddly I thought of this 20 years ago, and sat with it until recently. It is without doubt the most exciting technology I have worked on.

“amazingly simple”A building made from one sheet only with no fasteners. This is as simple as igloo, but a lot easier to construct!
“with heart”A technology that can be used for 3rd world shelter and emergency shelter, as well as many developed world high value applications
“very experienced”10 years of business, patent and prototyping development. Passionate pragmatic and hard working - a nice combo!

The best ideas are obvious once you see them. 1. In 1873 Levi Strauss got a patent
for a metal technology for fabric … the rivet in Levi™ jeans
2. “Flex mechanism” takes fabric technology and applies it to metal … and that is very useful!
10
Snapshot 3/4 What markets are there for this technology?
roof, the entire building, dam, stock underpass, new-born lamb shelter, mining or road tunnel lining, emergency shelter, growing tunnel, wintering barn, silo, tank, calf shelter, mobile fertiliser cover, house roof, commercial building, insulated cool store, aircraft hangar, 3rd world housing, sun shade, arched rib support for ‘container shelter’, motorway barricade, retaining wall, cowshed roof, industrial building, greenhouse, refugee camp shelter, barn, modular construction, sports arena clear-span roof, bird proof ‘no roost’ grain store, sculpture, road side worker shelter, exhibition space, conservatory, solar gain “water roof”, pipe, bridge ….
Flex-mechanism is a “platform” technology with seemingly very wide application. That is good and bad. True the potential appears enormous. But you have to bite off the best fruit.
A key here is to initially focus on several “low hanging fruit” applications ONLY, and create business relationships and revenue around those areas. The areas that seem the most “fruitful” are highlighted above.

39
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 1/8WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE IN TECH SPEAK?
A compression-tension arched laminated beam is formed where the sheets/connectors join. The connection may be thought of as a distributed, lower-force, frictional connection, without sheet perforation, in the character of an interference fit. The assembly self supports, but also self braces because of the the flexing of a 2D form to a 3D form.
40
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 2/8WHAT SORT OF PROFILE CAN BE USED?
Most: Whilst corrugated and other 2D forms have merit, the technology also works with flat forms. Edge details can be used which allow easier assembly. This is advantageous for larger span applications, perhaps where the sheet is roll formed off a portable roll former unit, where it may be impractical for adjacent sheets, or connectors, to be slid together length ways
41
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 3/8WHAT ABOUT USING OCCASIONAL SEE THROUGH SHEETS?
AOK: Flex mechanism is very versatile as it is both modular and telescopic. Where weaker sheets, or no sheets are preferred (for ventilation for example), then the adjacent or termination sheets or connectors can be augmented in strength, Additional transverse bracing can be added. Of course where a roof requires a gantry occasional conventional curved beams can be used as well.
42
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 4/8WHAT ABOUT LATERAL LOADS?
Any clear span building system need to resist side loads on the walls. Flex mechanism is no different. Some ways to deal with is are: 1. No walls – take the arch to the ground2. Stronger walls3. Off set walls4. Buttressing5. Tie rods/beams6. Intermittent conventional structure7. Posts
43
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 5/8WHAT ABOUT SPAN CAPABILITY?
500m: Yes I know that seems crazy but we are using light elements, (modular & telescoping as needed), which we already know to be strong:
1. 2D form flexed to 3D2. The “French” seam in jeans 3. Friction via interference fit4. No perforations5. The arch 518m arched span USA
44
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 6/8WHAT ABOUT ON-SITE CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE?
Ok lets consider a roof with a big span: Depending on application and details the following are some options: 1. Assemble flat at top plate level, and raise centre
line, secure one side, and pull down other side to secure
2. Assemble flat at top plate level and tension to arch with cable or tie rods
3. Assemble flat at ground (or near) level and raise centre ridge line to drape curve and secure to foundations or side walls
45
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 7/8WHAT ABOUT PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES?
Steel: Roll-forming, which could be an add on to an existing machine, or a stand alone machine
Aluminum: Extrusion, possibly via two profiles which fit together because of the tongue ratio needed
Plastics: Extrusion, in uPVC, polycarbonate or fibre reinforced plastic
46
FLEX MECHANISMFOR ENGINEERS SLIDE 8/8WHAT ARE SOME INITIAL PROFILES?
There are many profiles possible, broadly speaking C, S and H in form.
These profiles can fit to sheets or to each other, and can telescope. They can be separated by spacers or buffers, and therefore twin layer structure can be easily created.
Where loads are greater parts can be doubled or tripled up
47
Patent: Kiwi Flex Ltd owns a patent pending technology, which has vast reach.Patent Progression: Before October 2013 this will be taken to a PCT filing, and before April 2015 it will be nationally filed in selected countries, but including as a minimum USA, Europe, NZ, Australia, Brazil, India, and China. Follow on IP: Is somewhat inevitable, and therefore key deals, with a significant development project, will be structured anticipating this and dealing within advance with who own what and how each benefits.

48
Verticals: Flex mechanism can be configured as part of the sheet itself or a connector for existing sheets. It can also be a structural support for soft coverings.License Regime: Current thinking is to find partners, possibly JV partners, initially in NZ and Australia, to focus on production in key materials that they would supply to users: • Sheets: in zinc allume, polycarbonate and plastic• Sheet connectors in zinc allume, aluminum, polycarbonate and fibre-reinforced plasticPartner Commitment: Deals with out commitment from both parties have no merit!. There will always need to be an absolute demonstration of commitment, and from the licensee this can be via cash up front or guaranteed yearly minimum royalty.

APPENDIX 1CONSUMER INTEREST AT THE JUNE 2013 FIELDAYS
The stand was very busy, and although we were in the Innovation Centre, we had more than 200 hundred enquiries from people wanting to buy product. Many of these were for sunshades structure, as what we had on display was obviously a cheaper and more elegant alternative to what is available now. However we also had enquiry for other structures including stock shelter and barns of course as we were at the Fieldays!
