Because of the nations recent opening up of international commerce and foreign aid, expatriates are flocking by the thousands to the ancient capital of Burma. A city of six million, Yangon is on the verge of modern development and an attractive place to make a difference or a profit. First impressions were: the city is open and green, lush with trees and wide boulevards, somewhat like Chiang Mai; there is only car traffic with motorbikes being outlawed and bicycles forbidden to ride on major roads; the people are diverse with over 200 ethnic groups and a melting pot of In- dian, Chinese, Burmese and other re- gional descent; there is a small but growing middle class, some new shopping malls, but no foreign fast-food chains; the poor have it difficult without the ability to purchase a car, ride motor- bikes, or limited bicycle access. It was great to share our Love Hanoivision and challenge the con- gregation to come up with their own ideas during small group discussions. The message and vision was well re- ceived! UNIFIED WORSHIP | GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS | TRANSFORMATIONAL OUTREACH 20 OCTOBER 2013

Yangon: “Hanoi 20 years ago” By Pastor Jacob

This was the line I heard several times during my visit to Yangon, Myanmar last

weekend. Because of the nation’s recent opening up of international commerce and

foreign aid, expatriates are flocking by the thousands to the ancient capital of Burma.

A city of six million, Yangon is on the verge of modern development and an attractive

place to make a difference or a profit.

First impressions were:

the city is open and green, lush with

trees and wide boulevards, somewhat

like Chiang Mai;

there is only car traffic with motorbikes

being outlawed and bicycles forbidden

to ride on major roads;

the people are diverse with over 200

ethnic groups and a melting pot of In-

dian, Chinese, Burmese and other re-

gional descent;

there is a small but growing middle

class, some new shopping malls, but no

foreign fast-food chains;

the poor have it difficult without the

ability to purchase a car, ride motor-

bikes, or limited bicycle access.

For my two-day visit, I was hosted by

Pastor Hideki and his wife Yumi of New

Life International Fellowship (NLIF).

Former residents of Ho Chi Minh City,

we were able to catch up after not meet-

ing for eight years. Over dinner, I met

with several council members of the

church, which was mutually encourag-

ing. On Sunday it was my privilege to

share the message during service, pre-

senting The Antioch Model of an inter-

national missional church from Acts 11

and 13. It was great to share our “Love

Hanoi” vision and challenge the con-

gregation to come up with their own

ideas during small group discussions.

The message and vision was well re-

ceived!

The Luchtenburg family and Rohan,

previous members of HIF Westlake,

send their love and greetings to all. A

number of people had traveled to Ha-

noi and visited HIF, something we’d

love to see more of!

This brief visit was part of an effort to

network international churches in our

region and globally. As lead facilitator

of the Missional International Church

Network (www.micn.org), it is my mis-

sion to connect, inspire and engage

int’l church leaders to be missional in

theology, vision and action. Following

my trip, the MICN leadership gathered

in Bangkok for three days to pray and

plan. MICN has begun its second dec-

ade with big dreams. Our next confer-

ence will take place in Beijing the end

of April, 2014. HIF has benefited great-

ly by being part of this network and it

gives us an opportunity to impact int’l

churches across the globe!

the prayer cards to make your request

known, then drop them in the offering bag or hand it to an usher or

There will be a Baptism class on October 27, at

the HIF Center after the worship service. The

Baptism class will be conducted by David Wa-

ters and is open to both the My Dinh and

Westlake congregation. The actual baptism

event is tentatively scheduled for the 10th of

November. Please watch out for further an-

nouncements in the bulletin as to where the

baptism venue will be. For those who are in-

terested about baptism and would like to be

baptized as well, please sign-up for the bap-

tism class at the information table or email

[email protected].

This Sunday, City Partnerships Spotlight fea-

tures ‘TeaTalk Vietnamese Club (TVC)’. This

club aims to help foreigners coming to Vietnam

to better understand their culture and conse-

quently for the Vietnamese to understand for-

eign cultures as well.

“Do you want to discover a new culture? Do

you want to learn a new language and have

more opportunities to develop lasting friend-

ships? Do you want to feel less confused and

more competent in everyday activities such as

shopping and buying cheap?”

This maybe some of the topic being discussed

when you join a TeaTalk session. TeaTalk is

located at No. 9 G1-Trung Yen, opposite 91

Trung Kinh.

seek God deeper and hold onto Him more tight-ly. When I am afraid and fear, God is my hope and help. Late one night, I awoke in the midst of another nightmare. But this time, it was different as I sensed a voice, a presence beside me praying forme, pro-tecting me. I know that even though I am in a low valley, God’s presence and reality in my life doesn’t change. He is Emmanuel. Now when I have night-mares again, I will wake up, pray, read the Word and praise. I am no longer afraid of nightmares any-more.

(Translated from Chinese by ‘redclaypot’)

Nightmares have always plagued me since that night when my father killed my mother, and I was but a little child at a tender age. My childhood days and growing up moments were all filled with nightmares, fears and sleeplessness. It became very much worse in 2010, and affected my daily activities. When I was at a loss as to how to continue with going for-ward in my life, God searched me out and I gave my life to Jesus. Two months after that, I came to Hanoi as part of my university’s student language immer-sion and exchange program. It was in February 2011 through Pastor Nelson’s preaching on James that God moved me to ask for help and healing. Through the months of spiritual battling, right up to June that year, I continued to have nightmares, and often woke up unable to breathe properly, with shivers, feeling my entire body incapacitated and unable to move. A very deep sense of fear and darkness will overwhelm me during these times. Afterwards, when I thought I have con-quered my fears and gotten rid of the nightmares, occasionally the nightmares will return and make me question if I had indeed been saved by grace in Christ. Even as recent as 14 Oct, a few days ago, I was still struggling with nightmares. But when I recount my journey, I am reminded that God has given me much grace and showed me in-comprehensible miracles. The most important bless-ing is that these fears and nightmares drive me to
