DC Stoddert Soccer began in 1977 as a small, neighborhood organization. Theclub now boasts almost 7,000 players from across the District of Columbiaand surrounding suburbs. And true to our roots, we continue to thrive asa result of the efforts of dedicated volunteers - over 700 of them! Tome, this growth reflects Stoddert’s success in providing a positivesoccer experience for our players, while at the same time fostering asense of community and promoting inclusion.

Over the past couple of years, the Board of Directors increasinglyrealized that Stoddert had outgrown its bare-bones organizationalstructure and its tiny office at the Jelleff Recreational Center inGeorgetown. Thus, 2014 has been a big year for the club. After 37years in operation, in January, we hired our first-ever executivedirector. Then in March, we opened our new office and clubhouse inTenleytown.

With Executive Director Doug Homer on board, the staff is better able toensure smooth operations during the soccer season; deliver high-qualityplayer development and coaching education; and provide support to ourvolunteer commissioners, managers, and coaches.

Moreover, we are better positioned to focus on important initiatives likeincreasing access to athletic fields; pursuing beneficial partnershipswith other organizations; and expanding fundraising efforts to maintainour robust scholarship program. Our new, Metro-accessible office has beentransformative in how the club functions and serves our constituents. Itis a more effective work environment for the staff, and it has alreadyproven its worth in hosting training events for coaches and othervolunteers; providing modern meeting facilities for our constituents; andserving as community space for our members.

Both of these milestones are part of a deliberate effort by the Board ofDirectors to ensure that the club is providing the best possible soccerexperience for our players and their families. We hope the importantdevelopments that have taken place in 2014 set the stage for Stoddert’scontinued success in the coming decades as the leading volunteer-driven,community-based soccer club in the Washington, DC area.

Best wishes,

Karin PerkinsChair, Board of Directors

LAST YEAR IN REVIEWDC Stoddert Soccer, the largest youth sports organization in the District of Columbia, has undergone major changes in the past fiscal year – most notably the development of new office space in Tenleytown. Affectionately dubbed the new ‘clubhouse’, the work space is home to the management team and regularly serves as a central meeting point for members of the Board and Committees, ongoing volunteer planning sessions and workshops, various coach and referee education seminars and other special events for the Stoddert Soccer community.

Earlier this year, the Board of Directors welcomed Doug Homer as its first-ever Executive Director. Doug is responsible for the overall management and administration of the club, which includes operations, personnel, programs, partnerships and management of an annual budget of $1.8 million. In support of these duties, Doug

regularly collaborates with the Board of Directors to lead and coordinate strategic tasks and objectives to further position DC Stoddert Soccer as the as the leading community-based, volunteer-driven soccer club in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

In April, members of the Board of Directors participated in a strategic planning retreat with a management consultant to examine the club’s mission and vision statements, and determine future priorities and initiatives that are necessary to support the club’s plans for the future. The outcome of these efforts is reflected in a refined mission and vision as well as guiding principles that maintain a deliberate approach to educational services and outreach that inspire children and families to participate in the sport of soccer.

RECREATIONAL SOCCER REACHES NEW HEIGHTSDC Stoddert Soccer’s recreational program has soared to new heights over the past year, thanks in part, to a dedicated corps of parent volunteers who spend countless hours each season collaborating with players, peers and club personnel to deliver a safe, fun and enjoyable soccer experience.

In 2013-14, more than 750 volunteers generously gave their time as coaches, team managers and age group coordinators to organize and lead upwards of 6,000 players onto 400-plus teams. A typical Saturday would often involve every member of the Stoddert Nation in the planning and execution of more than 200 recreational matches - most of which were played on private and public athletic fields and parks throughout the Metropolitan Washington, DC area. Look around and take notice – DC Stoddert Soccer stakeholders are our neighbors, policymakers, service professionals and future leaders in the making.

At the conclusion of the fall 2013 season, the club sought nominations from parents, players and peers to honor and celebrate the ‘good our volunteers do’. Nominees ranged in age, expertise, professional and educational experience as well as their time of service with the club. In the end, the following men and women were honored by DC Stoddert Soccer as recipients of various service awards during the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

Did you know that DC Stoddert Soccer provides intensive soccer skills instruction and coaching to more than 700 boys and girls throughout the academic year?

Travel opportunities begin at the Under-9 age group for second graders and continue through twelfth grade for players as old as 19 years of age. Players and their families make a year-long commitment to their team and engage in a variety of individual and team-based training activities to develop technical skills, tactical awareness and physical fitness necessary for competition against other clubs in local and regional leagues and tournaments.

Led by Travel Director Evans Malyi, the Travel program features the finest professional soccer coaches in the greater Washington, DC region. Each Stoddert coach has a demonstrated commitment to the game and has attained formal training and licensure that complies with club standards.

Among the 26 professional men and women who guide and mentor travel teams, three exceptional coaches rose to new heights and were recognized by national organizations for their outstanding performance and leadership during the fall and spring seasons.

Mohamed Bennani, Age Group Coordinator for the Boys’ Under 13 through Under 15 travel teams, received Region I Coach of the Year honors from US Youth Soccer in recognition of his coaching prowess, ongoing commitment to sportsmanship, player development and personal development.

Mavis Danso was one of 30 coaches selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the “30 Under 30 Program”,

which supports young coaches aiming to acquire the skills and education necessary to transition to the industry on a full-time basis. Coach Danso, a former Ghanian National Team player, was chosen from a pool of more than 600 applicants and is the first coach from DC Stoddert Soccer to receive this honor.

Ben Ossei-Akoannor, Head Coach of the Under-13 and Under-14 Red Metros squads, was honored by the club as its Travel Coach of the Year. Ossei-Akoannor, a former standout at York (Pa.) College and Harrisburg Soccer Club, is the ninth travel coach in the organization’s history to receive this honor.

Many of the travel teams captured league and tournament titles throughout the 2013-14 school year, which included the following highlights:

• Head Coach Keith Neale’s Girls’ Under-13 Blue Metros completed the 2013-2014 Club Champions League (CCL) season in first place winning every game except one throughout the campaign.

• Girls’ Under-11 Blue Metros made the impossible ‘possible’ as they captured the prestigious 2014 Jefferson Cup. Led by Coach Karen Kelser, the Blue Metros tallied 15 goals over four matches and completed the showcase with a record of three wins and one loss.

• The Boys’ Under-11 White squad, under the guidance of Head Coach Elvis Hedji, was honored by the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) as winners of the Fall 2013 Team Sportsmanship Award.

EVENTS IN THE CLUBFINDING “FUN” IN EVERY WAY FOR KIDS

Over the last three years, DC Stoddert Soccer has been a great contributor to the important youth sport research being conducted by Dr. Amanda J. Visek, Department of Exercise Science, and her team at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University. Specifically, DC Stoddert and other area soccer clubs have been key informants in identifying all of the things that make playing sports fun – information that can be used to keep kids engaged in sports into and beyond their adolescence.

Utilizing the fun data previously collected from players, parents, and coaches, Visek’s research team developed a survey that measures all of the many dimensions of fun. They asked 142 soccer players, 37 coaches and 57 parents to identify all of the things that make playing sports fun for kids. When all of their ideas were pooled and synthesized, 81 specific determinants of fun were identified. Next, the study participants were asked to sort the 81 fun-determinants in a way that made sense to them and then finally to rate the determinants on their importance, frequency, and feasibility. The study, “The Fun Integration Theory: Towards Sustaining Children and Adolescents Sport Participation,” was funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health. The research was done in partnership with DC Stoddert Soccer and other DC-area sports leagues.

Here are the key findings:• There are four fundamental tenets to creating

fun – that is, there are internal, external, social, and contextual factors that make up the complete fun experience for kids.

• The 11 fun factors lie within the fundamental tenets and include Being a good sport, Trying hard, Positive coaching, Learning and improving, Game time support, Games, Practices, Team friendships, Mental bonuses, Team rituals, and Swag.

• The 11 fun factors are each defined by the various 81 fun-determinants – specific, actionable behaviors that foster fun.

• Among the 11 fun factors, Being a good sport, Trying hard, and Positive coaching were the most important when it comes to fun;  together, these three factors were coined the “youth sport ethos” – a collection of 28 fun-determinants that set the standard for promoting a culture of fun.

Football on Fertile GroundStoddert Nation member travels to Ethiopia and distribute new and gently used soccer equipment

Earlier this year, Laura Retlzer contacted the club to ask for uniforms and soccer balls to take with her on an upcoming trip to Ethiopia, and had just enough space in her luggage to take a small supply of items – all of which found their way into the heart of the Horn of Africa.

“I heard about the trip that the Stein family took and reached out to Stoddert for help,”

Page 11: 2013-14 Annual Report

92013-2014 Annual Report

remarked Retzler when asked about how the idea to carry and distribute soccer gear abroad was first conceived. “Nick Keenan was instrumental in helping me connect with Tom Gross and Doug Homer, both of whom were very receptive and supportive of my idea.”

It didn’t take long for Retzler to receive new and gently used club uniforms and balls from the club’s storage facility just hours before her pending journey to Ethiopia. Once on the ground and entrenched in her work, Retzler traveled to several orphanages throughout the country and distributed the items to the children at these facilities.

“It is the end of the rainy season in Ethiopia,” said Retlzer in a follow up e-mail. “This afternoon I was able to join a group of kids for a soccer game, thanks in part to the items Stoddert donated. I gave a few balls to 2 different orphanages on Friday. the kids at the second orphanage had just returned when I arrived from a nearby field where they played with a half deflated old ball the rolled no more than three feet when kicked before stopping. Thanks for the fun you helped bring to many kids’ days.”

Annual College Seminars Draw Players, FamiliesDC Stoddert Soccer held its Annual College Seminars in April at the Jelleff Boys & Girls Club for several hundred youth players, parents, and coaches.  Organized by Len Oliver and Evans Malyi, Director of Travel Soccer, the workshops provided families with a casual and front line opportunity to interact with area college coaches, ask questions and gain further insight on athletic recruiting, financial aid practices and procedures, and the difference between playing intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA, NJCCA and NAIA levels of competition.

Karen Kelser, Age Group Coordinator for Stoddert’s Girls’ Travel Under 11 and 12 age groups, and Keith Tabatznik, former Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Georgetown University, moderated the events and helped direct questions from audience members to the panelists, who oversee programs at area colleges and universities, including American, Catholic, George Mason, George Washington, Montgomery College and the University of the District of Columbia.

Building Up Play, One Pass At a TimeCITY FC Futsal program provides training opportunities for area youth

Led by Roy Kelly, Co-Founder and Technical Director, CITY FC™, an official DC Stoddert Soccer program, has provided fun and engaging futsal training activities for hundreds of Stoddert youth in area gymnasiums across the Nation’s Capital for the past seven years. Players work together to acquire new technical skills through small-sided games and training activities that correspond to the game of Futsal, which is a fast-paced, five-on-five indoor soccer game that is played with defined boundaries, a smaller ball and no walls.  CITY FC™ coaches address various technical aspects of soccer that include passing and receiving, dribbling, turning, shielding the ball and learning how to develop a softer touch with the foot so as to maintain control of the ball. Over 300 District youth participated in CITY FC™ futsal programs during the 2013-14 winter months and were able to receive advanced technical instruction as a result of their involvement in the program.

CASE STUDIESUP CLOSE WITH MICHAEL KLAIN

At DC Stoddert Soccer, we aim to encourage youth participation in soccer in the greater Washington Metropolitan area, and provide supervised games and practices for boys and girls. Many families and players that get involved with the club do so whole heartedly, and one former player who took full advantage of everything that the club offers is alumnus, Michael Klain.

Klain, 20, is a junior at Harvard University pursuing a degree in economics. He began his soccer experience at the tender age of four and stayed with the club until he completed high school. Michael started in the club’s recreational league and was coached by his mother, Monica Medina, who he credits with being a major part of his soccer development.

“My Mom was the one that really made me fall in love with the game, and that has provided

my motivation in the years since,” said Klain.

Michael spent the best part of 14 years with the club and accumulated many memories along the way, but when asked if he has one singular shining moment, he paused for a second and remarked about the people and places the game took him during his youth.

“DC Stoddert played a key role in developing how I approach life at Harvard. In terms of soccer, I played with the club my entire life before coming to Harvard, so my development as a player is entirely thanks to DC Stoddert. I think more importantly though, my teammates and coaches, especially Evans Malyi, helped teach me how to approach the game, how to be a member of a team, and how to be a leader. I still use the same approach on a day-to-day basis that I learned and developed throughout my time as a player for DC Stoddert.”

GET TO KNOW NICHOLAS CARSON2013 DC STODDERT SOCCER TYLER RUSCH ADULT REFEREE OF THE YEAR

Nicholas Carson has been a fan of the Beautiful Game for more than half of his life. When his son was born, he began to learn the Laws of the Game and take greater interest in becoming a referee, something which would allow him to be close to the action and give him the satisfaction of helping kids learn how to play within the rules. He’s been one of the club’s mainstays at the center of the pitch for several years and was honored for his exceptional performance in 2013 as the recipient of the Tyler Rusch Adult Referee of the Year award.

Nicholas first became involved with DC Stoddert Soccer as a volunteer coach of his eldest son’s soccer team. It was there that he had the opportunity to interact with peers and families of varying backgrounds, interests and experiences with soccer. Soon enough, he enlisted in the club’s Referee Program and took certification classes to become an official U.S. Soccer Federation referee. To say that he takes his job seriously is an understatement, particularly with the time he dedicates to ensuring that the games start on time and are officiated fairly. When asked how he manages the game day experience for players, coaches

and families, Nicholas admitted that he encourages good sportsmanship and often reminds the players that they are there to have fun and enjoy the game. Above all, he makes sure to enforce respect for the game – win, lose or draw.

“I often tell players that they can have a great game as an individual by meeting or exceeding goals they set for themselves regardless of the team’s performance.”

With every game, there are inherent challenges to ensuring a safe and enjoyable game experience. To that end, Nicholas admits that the most challenging aspect to his duties as a referee are doing everything possible to “keep the players safe, keep everything moving, and often have a thick skin.” The rewards are plentiful after years of playing and the toll that it takes on the body, but for Nicholas, officiating recreational matches for DC Stoddert Soccer is his way of being able to continue being on the pitch, enjoy the beautiful game and work with developing players, particularly younger ones who aren’t always familiar with the Laws of the Game and can benefit from knowing them as they play.

MEET THE COMMISH: CHRISTOPHER VADEN

Christopher Vaden has served the Stoddert Nation for the past few years as a Volunteer Commissioner of the club’s Co-Ed Under 14 Recreational Division. Chris has several children of his own in the club and is proud of the progress that they have made over the years. When not out on the fields each weekend, Chris serves as the Deputy Chief of the Environmental Defense Section in the Environment & Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

How did you first become involved with DC Stoddert Soccer? When my older son was in pre-K, he joined a U5 team in the spring, and I signed up as an assistant coach. That was about 25 rec seasons ago -- he’s now in the coed high school division. My younger son has also played since U5, and is now in the U14 division, where I’m commissioner.

Describe your role and responsibilities as a Commissioner. Do you look forward to seeing the kids play each weekend?Commissioners are busiest in the month leading up to the start of each season, when they’re occupied with getting players on the right rosters, figuring out what to do about teams that don’t have enough players, putting a schedule together, ordering and distributing uniforms, etc. It actually calms down a bit

once the season gets underway.Like any parent, I love watching my own kids play, and seeing how much their skills progress from one season to the next. We’ve come a long way from when it was just a knot of cute little kids chasing a ball around. By U14 it’s fun to watch as a real, competitive sporting event. Last Saturday I got to see my 11th grader score a goal on a bicycle kick. How fun is that?

What’s the most challenging aspect to your service as a Commissioner? It’s always a challenge to get enough parent volunteers for things like field lining. It always seems to be the same small group of people that step up to do more than their share. Parents need to realize that Stoddert is largely a volunteer organization, and that the coaches and commissioners already volunteer huge amounts of time to provide their kids with a worthwhile soccer experience. If the non-coaching parents would each give an hour a season to things like field lining and goal set-up, it would be a huge help to the coaches who give some much time week in and week out. Fortunately, as my U14 division has progressed up to full-sized fields, Stoddert has been able to rent more and more turf fields that don’t need any set-up, so it’s gotten easier.

Earlier this year, the Board of Directors met to map out the future of DC Stoddert Soccer. This one-day retreat allowed the group to examine and discuss all aspects of the club’s mission and vision statements along with its priorities and expectations. At the heart of this working meeting was a collective understanding that the club had reached a crossroads and a new plan was needed to align the organization with strategic goals and initiatives that enhance the club’s efforts to serve players, coaches, referees and family members in a safe and stimulating soccer environment for many years to come.

The result of that retreat and countless hours of working meetings and plenary sessions that have since followed is a path that takes children and families from one stage of soccer enlightenment and awareness to a place where the game is the great teacher and through it, our members learn and develop new skills, foster relationships and serve the community. Through this ethos and dedication to our core principles, which define who we are and what we stand for, DC Stoddert Soccer aims to accomplish the following:

• Promote a life-long love of soccer in our community;• Attract, retain and provide school-age youth of all backgrounds and abilities opportunities to play and enjoy the game;• Provide a unified soccer organization and seamless experience; and• Develop innovative solutions to the challenges of an urban environment.

In the years ahead, we envision more athletic fields and recreational facilities in the District of Columbia that are designed to meet and sustain an ever-growing populous of children and families that are new residents in our Nation’s Capital. We also foresee a surge in the number of coaches and referees who receive formal training and support from the club. These are men, women and youth that are past and present Stoddert participants and want to give back to the sport and the community in a positive and meaningful way. And finally, we are committed to making the Beautiful Game accessible to children in all eight wards of the District. This will require careful planning and attention to detail, the cultivation of new partnerships, and the execution of our strategic plan – join us and be a part of the Stoddert Nation, now and into the future.

Sincerely,

Douglas HomerExecutive Director
