PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE

“We are continuing to put the pieces in place. We are all in this together, working towards an organization

that everyone is proud to be a member of, and representative of a centre of excellence for the game of

soccer in Alberta.”

2013-14 represented the first full year of being guided by the Association’s first ever Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan charted our road ahead and step by step, we continue to make meaningful strides forward, growing our reputation and place in the local, provincial and national soccer community. The Board of Directors and Staff are working hard to increase the confidence in our association from our members and the community at large. This is being done through ensuring transparency, accountability and fairness to all in how we deliver our programs and services.

Significant progress has been made in modernizing our governance documentation including by-laws, rules and regulations, committee terms of reference and policies, and the movement towards a simplified fee structure. The Board is committed to continuing this important work and working alongside the Canadian Soccer Association in aligning our governance model. We hope that this leadership in governance will help our members in modernizing their own governance documentation to help improve the state of soccer administration in Canada for the future.

We are also starting to gain a better understanding of how our committees should, and will function which will help to serve our association better for the future. Our standard operational committees (Referees, Competitions and Technical) continue to deliver the highest level of programs and services while new operational committees such as the Business Development Committee will continue to move the organization forward in attracting and maintaining strategic partners.

This past year allowed us to showcase our Association in a variety of ways both nationally and internationally. Canada Soccer looked to Alberta to help pilot the new C Licence coaching course and gather coaches from across the country to learn the new curriculum. Additionally, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 demonstrated that Alberta still remains one of the most engaged soccer audiences in this country. The Quarter-Final in Edmonton featuring Canada versus Germany was the best attended game during the entire tournament and included 3,600 of our Provincial Championship participants. The FIFA Live Your Goals Festival, held in Edmonton attracted the attention of our members, local media and FIFA while inspiring young females from around the province in the areas of playing, coaching and refereeing.

We are continuing to put the pieces in place. We are all in this together, working towards an organization that everyone is proud to be a member of, and representative of a centre of excellence for the game of soccer in Alberta.

OUR PROVINCE. OUR SPORT The Alberta Soccer Association is the Official Governing Body for soccer in Alberta. Our vision is to create a centre of excellence for the game, providing opportunities for all players to reach their full potential.

Alberta Soccer is the largest individual sports association in Alberta with participation numbers increasing each year. There are currently almost 80,000 players registered in clubs that operate in our 23 Districts.

The Alberta Soccer Association is also associated with the only Professional Soccer Club in Alberta, FC Edmonton and the Alberta College and Universities Athletic Associations.

The majority of Alberta Soccer’s budget (almost 65%) supports on-field activities. We operate 12 Male and Female Provincial Teams; Regional Performance Centres for players looking to transition to the National Team; 72 Servus Youth Provincial Championships; 28 Senior Provincial Championships; Mini Stars Program for children aged 10-12; Grassroots Festivals for children aged 6-9; and a Disability Soccer Program.

Alberta Soccer is also building a reputation as a top-tier host of special events. With our partnership with Canada Soccer and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 – Edmonton Local Organizing Committee, Alberta has hosted multiple, successful National Team Member events along with a FIFA Live Your Goals Festival.

CREATING A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE Alberta Soccer’s 2013-2016 Strategic Plan set out a new mission and vision for the Association as well as objectives and outcomes going forward. The five goals which guide many of our activities within our Strategic Plan are as follows:

Deliver quality structured systems of sportprogramming across soccer in Alberta

In collaboration with our stakeholders andpartners, ensure that the ASA is a leader inthe sport of soccer in Alberta

Attain financial sustainability by using awell-managed financial system and throughbuilding alliances in the community

Soccer in Alberta is recognized for itsleadership, organizational strengths and itsongoing strive for excellence

The ASA has a clear and credible publicimage, while demonstrating a strongcapacity to communicate its vision andgoals

In 2013-14, the Alberta Soccer Association continued to make strides towards meeting many of our Strategic Plan objectives and many positive outcomes were achieved while those that are still in progress will be prioritized for the next two years.

In Governance and Leadership, an annual business plan continues to be developed to help keep the work of the association on track while terms of reference for all governance and operational committees have been finalized and approved to enhance the quality of our work going forward.

Our financial stability continues to be a positive note as our annual fiscal performance has been within 5% of overall budget targets and partnership revenues have increased by 75% since 2012. A simplified fee structure will remain the priority going

forward as we attempt to continue to stabilize our finances and increase our membership base.

Within organizational development and partnerships, proper HR processes and manuals have been put in place which has helped with staff retention and job performance.

The Alberta Soccer image and communications processes have been strengthened through the guidance of a corporate communications strategy. Established brand guidelines, increased interaction with the mainstream media and improved presence on social media in addition to the first full year of a re-designed website that has increased its users by 50% have all contributed to a positive community presence and image for Alberta Soccer.

Amongst our Technical objectives, we have achieved the publishing of grassroots manuals, session plans and establishing regional performance centres in both the North and South. Within the Referee department, the push for recruitment and retention has led to an 8% increase in Referee retention while further development projects and a clear pathway have also been established. Our Competitions department has made positive updates to our rule books while also hosting the Western Masters/Classics this past year with CUSA and CWSA.

While much has been achieved in our first full year with the Strategic Plan in place, we remain focused on the tasks ahead to continue to create a centre of excellence for the game.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT The Technical Department, in alignment with the Alberta Soccer 2013-2016 Strategic Plan is tasked with keeping pace with the ever evolving soccer landscape in Alberta, Canada and the rest of the World. Canada Soccer with the newly introduced Player Pathway (please see below) has made it quite clear that players and coaches at all levels of play should have access to appropriate programming and resources to fit their needs. Alberta soccer has embraced this new pathway and we encourage our membership to do likewise. In 2014, the Technical Department strived to continue to increase engagement with all members, whether that be at Recreational, Competitive or Excel levels of play.

To complement the Canada Soccer Pathway, Canada Soccer also released a series of Coaching Toolkits for Active Start, FUNdamentals and Learning to Train Stages of Development. The toolkits, which emphasize learning characteristics of children in those Stages of Development provide drills and small-sided game activities for recreational and competitive coaches to use in practices. These valuable resources also highlight a “station” approach to training as Canada Soccer’s preferred training model.

On the high-performance side, Technical Director Shaun Lowther, with the assistance of his Technical Committee pushed forward with two major programming opportunities: the Regional Performance Centres and a High Performance League to help Alberta fall in line with the elite player development pathway developed by Canada Soccer and have Alberta talent be identified by National Team Coaches.

In late 2013, in partnership with FC Edmonton, two Regional Performance Centres (RPC) were launched in the North (female) and the South (female and male) with the purpose of bridging the gap between youth and senior levels. FC Edmonton’s Academy has already been established for boys in the North. The intent is to

move the RPC to a Canada Soccer licensed “Regional Excel Centre” (REX) at the earliest opportunity. Currently, there are only two licensed REX Centres in Canada (located in Nova Scotia and Ontario). In 2014, we saw 52 females and 22 males, aged 13 to 17 come through the program.

One major component of the Canada Soccer Pathway is the implementation of a “High Performance” youth soccer league in each province. With Alberta Soccer’s belief that a High Performance League is essential for Alberta to continue to be at the forefront of the game in Canada, the Technical Department pushed forward in 2014 with an implementation plan for this league. Plans still continued to be discussed with the membership with the intention to have a fully operational league in 2016.

PROVINCIAL TEAM PROGRAM In 2014, with the National All-Stars showcase being eliminated, Alberta Soccer fielded 10 Provincial/Regional Teams at the U13-U15 age groups. Regional and Provincial trials were held in Spruce Grove, Lacombe, and Calgary in the last week of May. Female and Male U13 North, U13 South, U14 North, U14 South and U15 Teams were selected with players coming from as far North as Fort McMurray and as far South as Lethbridge to represent Alberta at the 2014 Pacific Challenge Series held in British Columbia in July.

The Pacific Challenge Series saw teams from BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Atlantic Provinces (PEI, Newfoundland, New Brunswick) with over 600 players taking part. The focus of the competition was on player assessment and identification similar to the Prairie Invitational and included scouts from Canada Soccer, Vancouver Whitecaps and several Universities and Colleges. At the end of the Series, 175 players were chosen as “Players of Distinction” of which 60 were from Alberta.

Winter Training commenced once again in Calgary and Edmonton in October. There are presently two hundred and sixty (260) players residing in twenty-four (24) different Municipalities throughout the Province participating in Winter Training for 2014-15.

Arctic Winter Games The 2014 edition of the Arctic Winter Games was hosted March 15-22 in Fairbanks, Alaska. All players participating for Alberta North were from Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray or Wembley, Alberta. This year’s competition was in a boarded futsal type of venue. Both the male & female soccer squads once again dominated round robin competition in fine fashion entering the medal rounds undefeated enjoying the added responsibility of being ‘the teams to beat’ in this event. In semi-final action, both Alberta North soccer squads earned gold medal match berths by defeating Alaska comfortably which meant final match-ups versus Greenland for both. Both Alberta teams proved to be goal hungry as both the boys and girls teams scored seven goals each in 7-4 and 7-1 victories respectively. A big thank you goes out to Coaches Chris Spaidal and Alex Mah for their hard work and dedication to both teams.

GRASSROOTS SOCCER PROGRAMS Alberta Soccer continues to support the philosophy that all grassroots players do not necessarily make it to the elite levels but all elite players start from grassroots. It is through grassroots programs that we are able to inject a love for the game and ultimately keep our participants involved in the game.

This is evident through our four cornerstone grassroots programs: Mini Stars, FUNdamentals Festivals, Summer Camps and Soccability.

Our Mini Star program continues to introduce players from 9 to 12 years old in the Learning to Train stage of development to individual skill development and future Alberta Soccer opportunities. In 2013-14, a total of eight communities implemented the Mini Stars Program with a total of 245 participants.

We also continued our District Outreach efforts which provide technical support with respect to implementing long term player development principles in our districts. Alberta Soccer’s technical team visited 19 districts impacting 759 parents and 1242 players across the province.

In 2013-14 we piloted FUNdamentals festivals in four different communities for parent/coach volunteers who are working with Under 8 players. The festival format, promoted by FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association has become the preferred format for grassroots players and allows players to focus on having fun through skill stations and small sided games. Alberta Soccer will continue to deliver and emphasize festivals in 2015 selecting five different communities to support the delivery.

Summer Camps continued to support some of our more remote communities through the distribution of funds and technical support during a week-long camp experience. Alberta Soccer will continue to look to build on the delivery of these camps into 2015.

Alberta Soccer continues to promote inclusivity in its programming with its offering of Soccability and PowerChair Soccer. Soccability showed steady progress in both Edmonton and Calgary and continues to offer something for players of all abilities. PowerChair was a new offering this year also in both cities. Two players, Lucas Bruno and Cory Johnson were identified for the National Para Soccer Team while Othman Rahall represented the Canadian Deaf Sport Association for a futsal tournament in Brazil.

In total, the Alberta Soccer Association ran 31 Indoor Provincial Championships and 40 Outdoor Provincial Championships for boys and girls in the U12 to U18 age groups at four levels of play. Additionally six Futsal competitions at the U12 and U14 age groups were held for Tier I and II players.

We also saw an increase in the number of teams competing from 2013 with 28 more teams. Alberta Soccer also introduced two new Provincial Championships logos for the first time.

Alberta Soccer acted as the host for the fourth annual Tier I to Nationals tournament held in Edmonton and Spruce Grove. Many of Alberta’s most talented players showed their quality during this competition and we hope to grow and promote this tournament in 2015.

Of special note this year was the hosting of all Tier II, III and U12 Tier I Provincial Championships in Edmonton and surrounding areas over the same weekend. This afforded us the opportunity to provide all participating teams, officials and volunteers with tickets to the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinal match – a game that featured Canada. We must say a huge thank you to EMSA, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park, for all of their hard work to help us make this venture a success. NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Age Group

In 2014, Alberta Soccer ran 14 Senior Provincial Championships for both indoor and outdoor play. This included five levels of play for U18+ players as well as two levels of play for Masters and Classics (ages 35+) players.

Alberta Soccer, in partnership with the Calgary United Soccer Association hosted the Western Masters/Classics Regional Competition from September 25 to 28. Six Classics teams and four Masters teams from six provinces came together to play the first games at the newly opened Calgary Soccer Centre outdoor turf fields. This event will have served as a good test event for when Calgary

hosts the Challenge Cup and Jubilee Trophy National Championships next year.

We must offer our appreciation to our 2014 Hosts including Calgary United Soccer Association (hosts of 43% of competitions), Edmonton District Soccer Association (hosts of 43% of competitions) and Lethbridge Soccer Association (hosts of 14% of competitions).

ALBERTA MAJOR SOCCER LEAGUE

254 MALE PLAYERS 283 FEMALE PLAYERS

The Alberta Major Soccer League continues to produce some of the best adult teams in Canada with 537 Players on 16 different clubs taking part in the league in 2014. The league is supported by teams from Calgary United Soccer Association, Calgary Women’s Soccer Association, Edmonton District Soccer Association, Lethbridge Soccer Association and Red Deer City Soccer Association.

In 2014, each team played a total of 14 games over the 13-week regular season in the summer. For the first time in the league’s 23 year history, Lethbridge FC captured the Men’s title while Edmonton Northwest United returned to form to earn the Women’s title for the first time since 2009.

Alberta Soccer’s support of the AMSL gives our adult players the opportunity to compete and train with some of the best players, coaches and officials in Alberta. The league epitomizes the Soccer for Life stage of Long Term Player Development while improving Alberta’s performances at Club National Championships.

In 2014, for the second year in a row and the fifth time in the last 11 years, Edmonton Victoria captured the Women’s National Title while the Calgary Callies, the last Alberta team to win a national title on the men’s side, lost narrowly in the finals to earn a National Silver Medal.

COACHING “Without coaching education, player development is left to chance” continues to be the motto of the Coaching Department of the Alberta Soccer Association as we move to continuously develop quality and qualified coaches. In 2013-14 we began to focus on Phase 2 of the new coaching pathway rollout which included the transition from the Pre B Assessment to a C License. Alberta played a significant part nationally in this as we held a pilot course in partnership with Canada Soccer. The demand for the C License course went beyond expectations leading us to accept 33 candidates rather than the expected 24.

The “Provincial B” License transitioned from a “course” into a “program that separates the training and evaluation components. With this approach, greater flexibility in delivery options and a focus on development without the stress of evaluation are being achieved. One Provincial B License Course was held in Edmonton with 24 applicants accepted in addition to the “Women in Soccer” cohort that trained throughout the winter. 8 participants were successful in achieving their Provincial B License.

Our Community Coaching courses continue to attract Coaches from all over the province of varying expertise. Coaches in these courses make up 95% of our overall course participants and are critical to offering proper training environments for young players. While 2012-2013 saw a massive increase in numbers due to a cut in course prices, 2013-2014 saw numbers stabilize with 1,308 participants in total.

Learning Facilitator and Master Learning Facilitator Training was held in Edmonton this past year in November and also incorporated a Special Learn to Train Course creating two layers of Coach training – community coach training and Learning Facilitator training. We will continue to look to provide similar opportunities. Overall, 33 Learning Facilitators were trained to deliver courses across the province.

Our Coach Management system continues to deliver valuable resources to our Community and Licensed Coaches including session plans,

session planning software, presentations and tools, certificate printing and workshop surveys.

The first of its kind in Alberta, the Coaching department offered two regionalized Goalkeeping Workshops for all club coaches in Edmonton and Calgary. Former Manchester City number one and England National Youth Team Goalkeeping Coach Joe Corrigan delivered the course on how to effectively integrate goalkeepers into team training. 42 Coaches attended these sessions over two weekends in July.

REFEREEING

Alberta continues to recognize the importance of Referees for soccer to thrive in Alberta. An emphasis continues to be placed on developing Referees from a young age while also trying to recruit and retain.

We saw an increase in the number of Referees registered in 2014, the number of courses delivered and the number of participants enrolled in courses from last year. We also offered another Provincial Upgrade Course for the second year in a row after a previous five year absence from delivering this type of course.

We also saw a slight increase in the number of females registered as Referees, an area that Alberta Soccer has made a priority. As part of this, Sheena Dickson and Monica Adam led training for

8 up and coming female referees at the FIFA Live Your Goals Festival held in Edmonton in July.

There were numerous highlights for our Referees in 2014. Garth Elgie was promoted to the Canada Soccer National List of Assessors in February. Richard Sansregret was accredited as a FIFA Futuro Fitness Instructor in Jamaica in the month of July. Gabriel Loas and Mike Stacey successfully completed their Canada Soccer Provincial Upgrade Clinic in May. FIFA Referee Sheena Dickson was appointed to the Algarve Cup in March, a famous friendly tournament featuring some of the best women’s national teams while also earning a spot at the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers held in the USA in October. Alberta’s other FIFA Referee Dave Gantar continued to work in the MLS and for CONCACAF/FIFA appointments. He was also selected by the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) for the inaugural HERO Pro league in India in October.

Finally, as part of a Charitable Partnership with KidSport Alberta, Alberta referees donated $2,831 from their game fees during the 2014 Outdoor Provincial Championships – an incredible contribution in giving back to the community.

SPECIAL EVENTS FIFA Live Your Goals The Alberta Soccer Association in partnership with Canada Soccer, the City of Edmonton and FIFA hosted a FIFA Live Your Goals festival in Edmonton on July 27th 2014. This prestigious and global programme was held at the brand new Clareview Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton, one of the training venues for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014.

Almost 200 young girls between the ages of 8 to 12 from Edmonton and area districts (EMSA, EIYSA, Sherwood Park DSA, and St. Albert SA) were treated to a festival format where they rotated through various skill stations and small sided games coached by young females throughout the province. The girls also received a once in a lifetime opportunity to get their picture taken with the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Trophy, get autographs from Canadian Women's National Team Player Brittany Baxter and meet the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 mascot Shuéme.

A key component of the event, and in support of the mandate of Alberta Soccer's Development of Women in Soccer Committee was to encourage females in all aspects of the sport - from coaches to referees to administrators. The event had 100% female participation.

Erin McLeod Meet & Greet In partnership with Canada Soccer and the Local Organising Committee for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™, Alberta Soccer ran a training session and meet and greet for 80 lucky high school academy soccer players from St. Francis Xavier and Vimy Ridge with goalkeeper Erin McLeod of the Canadian Women’s National Team. Erin visited with the players during the training session, participated in a group Q&A and signed autographs for the players. Erin, a former Alberta Soccer player and current ambassador for the Association, also helped present a cheque to KidSport Alberta from Alberta Soccer and our Referees.

Alberta Summer Games The 2014 Alberta Summer Games were held July 24-27 in Airdrie. Male and female teams were composed in each of the eight Alberta Sport zones at the U13 level. Zone 3 (Calgary) emerged victorious in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions. On the girls’ side, Zone 3 (Calgary) defeated Zone 6 (Edmonton) 1-0 to capture gold, while Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) won bronze in a hard fought game over Zone 2 (Big Country). On the boys’ side, Zone 3 defeated Zone 5 by a score of 3-1 in the gold medal game, while Zone 6 won bronze over Zone 1 (Sunny South) in a tight 2-0 game.

Tournament Sanctioning In 2014, the Alberta Soccer Association sanctioned 57 tournaments throughout Alberta. tournament sanctioning is essential in providing insurance coverage, access to referees, advertising on the Alberta Soccer Website, and allows tournaments to accept teams from outside their district, province and country.

FINANCIALS One of the key objectives of the current Alberta Soccer Strategic Plan is to achieve financial stability for the long-term. Over the past three years, our association has maintained a surplus. In 2013-14, another budget surplus was targeted but fell short due to an unforeseen district reporting irregularity resulting in a reduction in the collection of membership fees. If we were to isolate that anomaly, our budget target would have fallen within less than 1% of our budget target. This clearly indicates that our planning and implementation phases are closely aligned. However, accounting for the anomaly, Alberta Soccer incurred a deficit this year of just under $75,000.

• The 10% drop in revenue is attributable inlarge part due to not having a casino thispast fiscal year as well as changes inspecial event occurrences

• Alberta Soccer continues to increase ourinvestment in direct on-field activities withapproximately 65% of our expendituresdirected to these activities whileadministrative expense were reduced for athird straight year (16.67% in 2012 to15.29% in 2013 to 15.19% in 2014)

• Alberta Soccer once again keptmembership fees locked for the 6th

successive year

Alberta Soccer posts the approved budget each year on the Alberta Soccer website assuring transparency with our membership and the public. In November, auditors once again approved a clean audit findings report of this past year’s financials (see Appendix B)

Actual results could differ from thoseestimates.

ALBERTA SOCCER ASSOCIATIONNotes to Financial Statements (continued)

Year ended October 31, 2014

1. Significant accounting policies (continued):

(d) Property and equipment:

Property and equipment are stated at cost and donated assets are recognized at fairvalue. Amortization is provided using the straight-line method and following annual rates:

Asset Rate

Office equipment 20%Technical equipment 20%Computer equipment 33%Leasehold improvements Lease term

(e) Revenue recognition:

The Association follows the deferral method of accounting for revenue. Fees arerecognized as revenue in the year for which services are provided. Fees received inadvance are recorded as deferred revenue. Restricted contributions received in the yearthat relate to future expenditures are recorded as deferred revenue. Unrestrictedcontributions are recognized as revenue when received.

Contributions for the acquisition of property and equipment and donated property andequipment are recorded as unamortized capital contributions and recognized to income onthe same basis as the amortization of the assets for which the contributions were received.Excess revenue (expenditure) reported in the statement of changes in net assets forinvestment in property and equipment are the net amount of depreciation and revenueattributable to property and equipment and represent a transfer of unrestricted net assets.

Interest income is recorded on a time proportion basis. Interest income earned onrestricted contributions that are similarly restricted by the contributor is recorded asdeferred revenue on a time proportion basis until the eligible expenditures have beenincurred at which time the interest is recognized as revenue.

(f) Contributed services:

The work of the Association is dependent on the voluntary services of many members.Due to the difficulty of determining fair value of these services, contributed services are notrecognized in the financial statement. The Association may receive distributable materialsfor distribution to member organizations. The Association does not recognize the revenueor related expense for these materials.
