GAUTENG BLACKBALL

From strength to strength...

Every year brings its ups and down and in the sport of pool

and Gauteng Blackball its no different. We still face

many challenges year in and year out, but I can

condently say that the future of our favourite pastime

looks bright in the province. Our afliation to the Gauteng

Sports Council will prove lucrative in terms of assistance

in our development sector and we hope that this

formalizes this year by introducing the sport to more

schools. We look forward to this progress and remain

focussed on growing our numbers in the province as we

edge closer to our short-term goal of 2000 players in the

near future.

Our province boasts many superstars who have done us

proud on the playing eld over the last year and a bit, but

we must make special mention of some of our achievers.

Firstly to Nicola Rossouw who is currently our SA

Women's Champion, All Africa Champion (beating

fellow Gauteng lady Natalie Kwong in the nal), and the

number 1 seed coming into the 2013/14 Nationals. Basil

Munsamy won the Senior's individual event at the Test

Series held in Dublin, Ireland in September last year and

Vishen Jagdev unfortunately fell short of winning the All

Africa Men's title but made the nal nonetheless. Ricky

Fillis must also be mentioned as Gautengs rst ever U14

South African Champion who won the title at the SA

Junior Championships last year. Our teams also did very

well at the last Nationals, with the Ladies, Seniors &

Masters winning their categories, and the Men and U18's

ending up 2nd. The ladies were unstoppable and literally

steamrolled their opponents. So much so, that they set a

record, winning every match they played with a bonus

point. An achievement that I believe has not been set by

any team in any category in the history of Blackball.

Sandile Madlala & Sbu Gumede were able to capture the

Mens Scotch Doubles title against Kumaran Govender

and Avi Naidoo who are also Gauteng representatives.

Keenan Adams defended his U18 Scotch Doubles Title,

but this time with KZNs Laaiq Daniel. Yusuf van Wyk &

Patrick Snyman also did us proud by taking the Seniors

scotch doubles titles.

Massive thanks must go out to our sponsors who have

once again come through to assist us in our difcult task of

nancially getting our players to the Nationals. Our squad

consists of 60 players and 12 managers, of whom we have

managed to fully pay for each and every one's

accommodation, kit, travel allowance and there was still

some budget left over for a small breakfast allowance! We

hope to enter even more players for the next nationals, and
