The Next

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day

when Christ Jesus returns.” -Philippians 1:6

One hundred years have come and gone since East Texas Baptist University opened its doors as the College of Marshall. 100 years! One century of growth, of service,

of promise. Now we embark on another century, in a time much different from when the college began. What will the university be like in 2113-2114?

One thing is for sure -- none of us will be here to know how ETBU is doing 100 years from now, unless through some miracle of science we extend human existence into the 120-year or 130-year range. We can only imagine where ETBU will be then, what the world will be like, and what higher education might look like 100 years from now. We believe, of course, that ETBU will still be that light on a hill; bigger, better, and more promising than ever. Five thousand students. Ten thousand students. Maybe 20,000. That remains to be seen. Perhaps the university will still be composed of 1,500 or 2,000 of the best students Texas and the Southland have to offer. Whatever the size, we hope the mission stays the same: a world of opportunity in a community of faith, still doing the work God has called us to do.

As we enter the second century of service for ETBU, we anticipate great things will happen here on the Hill. We believe, as Paul did, that God, who began the good work within us, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. If that’s more than 100 years from now, we’re confident that ETBU will continue to fight that good fight for the next 100 years. -- Yearbook Staff, 2013-14

Move-In Day is an incredible opportunity for returning students and faculty to welcome new students to the ETBU campus. It was all hands on deck this year, with every person doing their part to help students settle into their new “home away from home.”

Fall Break

We asked students to send us their pictures from fall break, and it is clear that ETBU students took great advantage of the free time. Whether they were road-tripping with friends or spending time with family, these students made sure that this fall break would be one to remember.

Highest girl and guy

fundraiser decided to

give Dr. Dub a friar do.

Students chose to support new styles to help two people battling cancer: ETBU student Nathan Mathias and Jessica Bendo, sister of ETBU student Gabrielle Garcia. During two weeks in the spring semester, 9 girls,10 guys, and 2 staff members fundraised in support of the two fighting cancer by holding a contest asking for donations from the ETBU community. The ETBU Strike Out Cancer fund also donated $500 to the cause. ETBU President Dr. Dub Oliver even put his hair on the line. If Shear Love beat the $3,000 mark in donations he volunteered to shave his head. The fundraiser exceeded its goal by bringing in $5,500.

Spring Break Missions Beach Reach

About 40 students from ETBU spent their Spring Break giving free van rides and serv-ing free pancakes on South Padre Island.

They answered the call to serve their peers, encourage safety, and share the Gospel. There were an estimated 21 baptisms and 104 new believers in Christ!

Students celebrate baptisms on the beach.

East St. Louis

Students from ETBU served alongside Crossroads Baptist Church and

Friendship Baptist Church in East St. Louis, known for poverty and crime. They ministered to younger kids and teens at the Christian Activity Center (CAC) and helped rebuild a house that had been burned down. The CAC provides the surrounding neighborhood kids a place to come after school and further their education & get college preparation & here about God’s love for them.

The 2013-2014 Student Government Association is carrying on the tradition of SGA by planning events and making many things possible on campus. SGA plays a huge role in planning and funding many school events such as Homecoming, Java Jam, Thrill on the Hill, Mabee

Christmas party, Christmas on the Hill, and many more school traditions that we, as students, will forever remember. SGA is the stage crew of the major production of tradition here on the Hill.

The 39 Steps provides melodrama, comedy

A man in London tries to help a counerespionage agent, but when the agent is killed, he must go

on the run to both save himself and also stop a spy ring which is trying to steal top secret information. The 39 Steps was a smash hit on campus this year as eight students perfected their parts and offered great performances to soldout crowds in ETBU’s Black Box Theater. The play is a melodrama adapted by Jon Jory from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Cody Blankenship became the first Track & Field champion in ETBU history in April 2014 when he cleared 6’8.75” to win the ASC High Jump Championship. He was also named ASC

Athlete of the Week twice during the semester with winning jumps at Mississippi College and Hardin-Simmons. Jenny Utterback surpassed her personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 32’10.25” for a sixth place finish at the ASC Championships. Landon Price and Megan Merrill also competed well and were inaugural members of the ETBU Track & Field team.

The Lady Tigers’ 5-4 win over the University of the Ozarks in the last game of the season gave the team their fourth victory of the

year; their best year yet. The girls won three of their last four matches, finishing the season at 3-7 in the American Southwest Conference, barely missing a birth in the ASC tournament. The men’s team finished the season with a 4-11 record; 3-7 in conference play. The four wins was also the best men’s finish since the program began.

BaseballTiger baseball finished the 2014

season with a two-run win over Louisiana College, narrowly

missing the ASC Championship tournament. Winning six games in a row in mid-April put the team in contention, but their split with LC on May 4 left them one game short. The team finished the season with a 16-24 record. Senior Phillip Windham, a powerful home-run hitter for the Tigers, was named a pre-season All American first-team at first base.

Super Regional ChampionsThe Lady Tigers powered past Cla-

remont-Mudd-Scripps during the

Super Regional tournament on a dra-

matic, walk-off home run from Lacey Lindsey

to earn the Tigers their second trip to the

NCAA Division III under coach Coach Janae

Shirley. The team lost in the 3rd round of the

National Championship tournament, and they

ended season ranked 4th nationally. This year’s

45 wins is just one of the many school records

broken by the Tigers in 2014. “It has been a

phenomenal season with a phenomenal team,

and I am proud of them,” Coach Shirley said.Shelby Parker pitches during Game 1 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver

A good listener.

a wise decision maker.

A wonderful friend.

University Community bids farewell to Dub & Susie OliverOn a Monday afternoon in May, 2014, members of

the ETBU community came together to celebrate the tenure of Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver and his wife Susie. Since their arrival in 2009, their accomplishments are too numerous to mention in this small space, but suffice it to say that Dub and Susie revitalized ETBU,

closing out the first hundred years and establishing a sound foundation and footing for the next 100 years. A beloved couple on campus and in the community, they will be sorely missed, but we wish them well at their new post as President and First Lady at Union University in Tennessee. Dr. Oliver was the 12th president of ETBU.

To Be Continued...“Over the next hundred years, I think ETBU will have grown exponentially in all areas including number of students, buildings and accommodations around campus, etc., and it will continue to mold students into a diverse community of faith. May the light on the hill never die!”

-Macy Freeman, Miss ETBU 2013-14

“I think the things that make ETBU what it is will stay the same throughout the next 100 years. I hope that community, and a Christ-centered atmosphere, will continue to be our core. I think that our academic programs will continue to expand and become more well-known. I trust that God has wonderful things in store for the future of ETBU.” -Kinsey Kent,

SGA President 2013-14
