The MIAC, which was founded in 1920 and sponsors championships in 25 teams, 13 for men and 12 for women, is recognized as one of the toughest NCAA Division III women’s and men’s intercollegiate athletic conferences in the country. The MIAC is a conference in which the athletes are students first, yet they still have the opportunity to reach any height to which their athletic abilities take them. As a component of NCAA Division III, no institution in the MIAC offers any athletic scholarships.

MIAC teams compete in several formats. Among these are round-robin play, round-robin tournaments and championship meets or tournaments.

Leadership for Change Wisdom for a LifetimeThe College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., was founded by Benedictine Sisters in 1913. The college was uniquely and specifically formed by women for women. Saint Benedict was the 13th women’s college in the United States and today is one of only 64 women’s colleges in the country. Whether in the classroom, at a sporting event, or living in the residence halls, CSB seeks to incorporate learning experiences inspired by the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

The Saint Benedict experience creates a sense of community rarely seen at other colleges. It provides a safe and comfortable environment ideal for inquiring, learning and growing.

Located in the heart of central Minnesota lake country and surrounded by 3,500 acres of pure forests and wholesome prairies, Saint Benedict is just minutes away from the St. Cloud metro area and an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students experience the benefits of small town modesty, while enjoying the convenient access of a big city.

The College of Saint Benedict has a unique partnership with Saint John’s University, a men’s college located four miles away. The schools are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. We share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth, and cultural and athletic involvement.

Both schools are dedicated to the development of a person as a whole. Offering single-gender and co-educational experiences, each strive to meet the distinct needs of women and men. Another advantage of this partnership is the expansion of resources for both institutions. CSB and SJU provide the education and opportunities of a large university accompanied with the individual attention of a small private college.

Saint Benedict strives to present students with opportunities to explore, stretch, and challenge their personal excellence. By developing their intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical health, our goal is to enable every woman to achieve her utmost potential.

The College of Saint Benedict’s mission is to foster integrated learning, exceptional leadership for change, and wisdom for a lifetime.

The 1970’s were a time of change, revolution, and transformation. Increased influence of the women’s movement, heightened concern over the environment, and improved space exploration were just a few of the headlines.

Saint Benedict was changing too.

In the 1976-77 season, the Saint Benedict volleyball team decided they would like their colors to be red and white. Known as the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict, they also decided they wanted a new moniker. So, they held a contest to find a new nickname.

CSB students were invited to submit ideas, and student-athletes selected the one they liked best.

“Blazers,” submitted by first-year student Mary Haffner, was chosen as the official sports name. This was a perfect fit as it flawlessly described the hard work, determination, and success of the trailblazing women who founded the college.

These sisters “blazed” their way through a field of uncertainty and unknown land to settle in Minnesota in 1856. They went on to establish the largest Benedictine community in the United States. They also built hundreds of hospitals, schools, orphanages -- and the College of Saint Benedict in 1913.

Blazers pays tribute to the courageous, strong, and bold women of the past and gives encouragement and pride to the women of the future.

Gains in experience and talent have Blazer hockey looking higher in 2013-14.

St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team returns a much of its scoring power, and combined with an improved defense, looks to break into the upper level of the MIAC in 2013-14.

Third-year head coach Jennifer Kranz welcomes back 83 percent of the team’s scoring from last season, led by Alli O’Brien who enters her junior year after leading the team with six goals, six assists and 12 points last season.

Each of the Blazers’ top five scorers is back on the ice this winter, including senior Ally Nielsen whose six goals tied O’Brien for the team lead. Juniors Megan Brettingen and Tara Frey, and sophomore Aly Hoffman are each also back, and the expectation is for each to take a step up this season.

“We told all of them that the expectation is for them to continue to produce and to produce even at a higher level,” Kranz said. “All of them came back excited for the year and they have a lot more confidence coming into the year just knowing what to expect.”

They know what to expect, because they’ve done it before, and can look back to last season to see the results.

“They know that they can put the puck in the net, that they can produce,” Kranz said. “And I’m excited to see how they work to fulfill those expectations.”

Blending with the returners is a large group of nine first-years. Heading into the season, they have already worked well with each other, and nothing different is expected when they get together with the rest of their new teammates.

“Having a big group going together to preseason workouts and being together at school before practice starts is great.” Kranz said. “I think we’re going to have a good group this year and they seem to be gelling really well. And I think moving forward it’s only going to get better from here.”

With the returners coming back better, and the new players that are coming in, Kranz can easily see they they’ve gotten faster, and quickly noted it when asked about the team’s biggest area of improvement.

“It would definitely be team speed, the first years coming in bring a whole new level. And our returners really bought in to the workouts that the strength coach provided them this summer, and the work that they put in in the fall has really helped increase our team speed.”

On defense, the blue line will be patrolled by senior Christine Brodersen, and sophomores Siri Berg-Moberg and Natalie Tinucci. Berg-Moberg and Tinucci each played in over 20 games last season, while Bordersen finished +5 for one of the best marks on the team.

However, the anchor of the defense will no doubt be between the pipes, where the Blazers have the luxury of two experienced goaltenders in senior Kaitlyn Rolando and junior Jenna Traut. Traut started 15 games last season, finishing with a save percentage of .916, while Rolando started seven times and had a team season best 45 saves in a near upset of eventual MIAC champion Gustavus late in the season.

“I’m really excited,” Kranz said. “I think Kaitlyn is healthy and ready to go, she’s excited about her senior year and excited to make a difference. Getting Jenna some more experience last year was great and I think they’re going to really push each other. It’s going to be great for the team as a whole to have two strong athletes and strong leaders back there anchoring us in the nets.”

So with the program taking steps forward and the talent level rising, the expectations have naturally risen. It’s not external, though, but rather from the team expecting more from itself.

“Not only mine, but everyone else’s expectations have gone up,” Kranz said. “I think that’s one of the great things, that I no longer have to say what the expectations are, it’s just accepted now. The culture is engrained in our athletes and they know it’s important for us to have a good showing every night, to get points every night.”

Great Expectations

Alli O‘Brien led the Blazers in goals and assists with six each, and in points with 12 as a sophomore while playing in 19 games last season.

Jennifer Kranz begins her third season as the Saint Benedict head hockey coach in 2013-14.

The sixth head coach in program history, Kranz led the Blazers to a 5-13-4 overall record in 2012-13, with a 3-13-2 mark in MIAC play, finishing eighth. The hallmark of her second season were the on ice

improvements made on the defensive end, where the Blazers allowed 30% fewer goals than they did the season before. They pitched four shutouts on the season, and allowed just a single goal in five other games.

In her two seasons she had guided Kerri Graske (2012) to All-MIAC honors, while landing three more on the Honorable Mention All-Conference honors, including Megan Schwegeman and Jenna Traut last season. Six Blazers in the last two years have also been named to the Academic All-MIAC Team.

The Blazers played five games with teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls last season, going 1-3-1 in those games, which included a dominant 3-0 win over St. Catherine, handing the Wildcats their first conference loss. Late in the season, the Blazers hosted No. 2 ranked Gustavus, and battled to the end in a 1-0 loss, standing as just one of two teams in the MIAC to limit the eventual conference champions to a single goal, and one of just four all season.

Kranz led the Blazers to a 5-17-3 overall record in her first season, finishing ninth in the MIAC with a 3-12-3 conference mark. She wasted no time in securing her first career win, posting a 4-2 victory over Marian in her first game on the bench.

After a 2-2 mark in nonconference play to open the season, Kranz led the Blazers to 2-2 tie with perennial power St. Thomas in the MIAC opener, a game the Blazers led late in the second period. Just three games later, she had her first career conference win, scoring a 4-1 tally on the road over Augsburg.

Later in the season, she rallied the Blazers from a 3-0 first period deficit on the road to earn a 3-3 tie with then No. 9 ranked Concordia-Moorhead, scoring a pair of third-period goals to do so.

Kranz came to CSB after serving as an assistant coach at nearby St. Cloud State from 2006 to 2011. With the NCAA Division I Huskies, she assisted in daily practice planning, with a concentration on coaching forwards. She also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and monitored the academic progress of her players.

Competing in the rugged Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), a league where members Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and Wisconsin had combined to win all 12 NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey Championships at the time, she helped the Huskies to a third-place finish in 2009-10. That season the Huskies became the first team in league history outside of the UM, UMD and UW to finish in the top three. She also helped SCSU to two fourth-place finishes, in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

During the 2010-11 season, Kranz served as an assistant coach for the Under-18 U.S. Women’s National Team, winning a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

Before SCSU, Kranz served as a coach at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., from 2002-06. From 2004-06, she served as the assistant girls prep hockey coach and helped the team win back-to-back USA Hockey Girls Under-19 national championships.

During her tenure at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, she was responsible for recruiting, travel and budget management, and also served as the public information coordinator for the private school’s athletic programs.

HEAD COACHJENNIFER KRANZ

Kelly Meierhofer begins her third season as an assistant coach with the Saint Benedict hockey team in 2013-14.

In charge of the Blazers defensive corps, the Blazer blue line allowed over 30% fewer goals last season, compared to the year before. After going the entire 2011-12 season without a

shutout, the Blazers had four last season, and five other times allowed just one goal.

At season’s end, she helped defenseman Megan Schwegeman earn All-MIAC Honorable Mention Honors.

In her second season, she led CSB to a 85.5 percentage on the penalty kill, a mark that stood right in line with the league leaders. Only 16 power play goals were scored on the Blazers last season, ranking them in the top half of the league.

Meierhofer has an extensive background playing hockey. She attended St. Cloud State University, where she played for four years. She was a three-time WCHA Scholar Athlete and received her Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences in 2010.

Meierhofer attended Sauk Rapids-Rice High School and was an all-conference athlete in ice hockey, soccer, and softball. In 2004 and 2005 she competed in the USA Development camps.

ASSISTANT COACHKELLY MEIERHOFER

Alex Hess begins his second season as an assistant coach for the College of Saint Benedict in 2013-14, working with the Blazer goaltenders.

In his first season, he guided Jenna Traut to All-Conference Honorable Mention honors, while she finished the season ranked 34th in

the NCAA with a .916 save percentage and 40th with a 2.55 goals against average.

He in a 2011 graduate of Upper Iowa University, earning his Bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise science, with a minor in biology.

He was the Greek Council president as well as secretary of the Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity.

Throughout this coming academic year, over 300 Saint Benedict student-athletes will be part of the Blazer family, and all students on both campuses will cheer on the Blazers in competition, learn with them in the classroom, and grow with them as a member of the community. As Blazers, our women are empowered to develop their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual growth. They are leaders, teammates, and winners on and off the court, the field, the rink, or the course.

The lifelong memories and passion for sports are what drive our student-athletes to be Blazers—women who are courageous, strong, and bold. And the support of the Blazer Backers makes those experiences possible.

As a Blazer Backer, you have the chance to be a fundamental part of our athletes’ success. Your commitment is vital in sustaining our winning tradition—one we can all be proud of! Please join the crowd as a Blazer Backer during the 2013-14 academic year with a gift today.
