Anemas Dungeons were part of the Blachernae Palace, unique in the

world with its historical and

architectural structure. It consists of 14 separate dungeons, each having 2

basements below sea-level with cell s for the prisoners and two towers. It

was used as a prison for high ranked

statesmen. Tekfur Palace (from outside) built in the 12th

century adjacent to the city walls. The only surviving

pavillion of the Blachernae Palace.

Byzantine City Walls surrounded the acropolis of Byzantium with 22

kms. long fortification with 96 towers and 9 main gates dating back to the

Historical Turkish Bath (Hamam) ÇEMBERLİTAŞ

Many visitors to Turkey have misconceptions about Turkish baths and do not know what to expect. For this reason we will go into more detail of this enjoyable experience. Traditional

Turkish baths have separate sections for women and men, or have different visit ing times or days for women and men. Women attend to women and men at tend to men unless a mixed

group rents the whole bath.When you enter a hamam, you will generally see a central courtyard or "Camekan" where refreshments are available. Small changing rooms generallysurround this central area of relaxation. There may also be a marble fountain. You will be provided with a towel and a "Pestemal" which is a large fringed garment, normally striped or

checked and made of cotton that you wrap around your body. In traditional baths the Pestemal is normally worn during the whole bathing process, but there may be nudity especially i n

the women's section. Those who are particularly modest should bring a bathing suit. It is recommended to bring your own soap and shampoo as what is available costs extra and is of low quality. The bather enters the sweating area or "Hararet" where there is a low marble platform called the "Gobek Tasi" which is heated. He or she spends some time relaxing on this

platform. Around this area, there are normally open cubicles with marble basins called "Kurne". After you have perspired, you can either bath yourself by sitting near the basin andfilling it with hot water, then dipping the "Tas" which is a bowl, traditionally of copper or brass having grooves and ornamentation, and pouring it over yourself, or you may request the

attendant to scrub you with a "Kese" which is normally a coarse mitt made of natural fibers.

The Çemberlitas Bath is located on Çemberlitas Square on Divanyolu Street situated in the midst of some of Istanbul‟s greatest monuments. It is next to the Vezirhan monument erected by Constantine I (324 – 327). The Köprülü Mahmud Pasa complex with its mosque, school and tombs are directly opposite the bath and at its sides are the Vezir Han and the old

university building. Also in the near vicinity of the bath are the tomb of Sultan Mahmut II and its treasury, the Köprülü Library, the Atik Pasa Mosque and school and the tomb of Ali

Baba



The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony MEVLEVI WHIRLING & DERVISH CEREMONY

The name Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi stands for Love and ecstatic flight into the infinite. Rumi is one of the great spiritual masters and poetical geniuses of mankind

and was the founder of the Mevlevi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam.

Rumi was born on 30 September 1207 in Balkh in present day Afghanistan to a family of learned theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi

and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. When his

father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi 24 years old, was an already accomplished

scholar in religious and positive sciences.The mevlevi brotherhood is founded completely on love and tolerance. He died on 17 December 1273 in Konya in

present day Turkey. He was laid to rest beside his father and o ver his remains a splendid shrine was erected. 13th century Mevlana Mausoleum with its hall, d

ervish living quarters, school and tombs of some leaders of the Mevlevi Order continues to this day to draw pilgrims from all parts of the Muslim and n on-Muslim

world.

This feast for the senses is presented in an oriental atmosphere,
