Portugal's greater exposure to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean among the various cork producing Mediterranean countries makes it the country with the largest area under cultivation of this species (715,922 hectares, 34% of the world total). It is also the country that has the longest-running tradition and has invested most in this sector, providing it with an extraction capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year (49.60% of the world total). Portugal is also the leading world exporter, exporting around 90% of production.

The cork oak forest, which is concentrated in the Alentejo region of Southern Portugal, is an ecosystem of unique characteristics. The soil of this region is ideal for the cultivation of this exceptional species, the cork oak. In this beautiful region, Amorim sets aside several thousand hectares for the cultivation and harvesting of cork, which it then channels to its industrial plants.

amorim award recognises best forestry management practices
Corticeira Amorim has set up and exclusively funds a National Award to recognise the best forestry management practices. This is a protocol established with 4 other entities: National Forestry Authority (AFN); Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (ICNB), Quercus and WWF, under the European Business & Biodiversity initiative.
Quercus Suber L, the scientific name of the cork oak, lives on average for around 200 years. It is one of Nature’s most extraordinary creations and the only species in the world that produces a bark with the unique properties of cork.

The removal of the cork oak bark is called stripping. This is the beginning of the industrial cycle of cork, which does not end with the final product reaching the market because cork's special qualities allow it to be 100% recycled and systematically returned to the market in an almost eternal cycle.Cork is stripped from cork oaks every nine years. This operation, requiring great manual dexterity, first takes place when the tree reaches the age of 25-30 years. It is then repeated every 9 years, without the tree being damaged or killed in any of these operations.

the enviROnMental ROle OF CORKThe cork oak forests play an irreplacable role in the conservation of the environment and the fight against climate change due to their extraordinary capacity to retain CO2.Amorim is the world leader of the cork industry, accepting its responsibility as the main investor in its development on a worldwide scale, contributing in this way to the battle for the environment. The carbon fixed by the cork oaks is stored in the cork and in all cork products.
fsC CertificationFSC certification of forests and products is a crucial component of the worldwide environmental protection strategy. Amorim was among the first and is one of the main promoters of this certification in Portugal, taking pride in its role which has already been recognised by some of the most important players in world markets.

The cork oak forests are one of Europe's richest ecosystems, supporting a wealth of fauna and flora of great diversity, associated with the variability of tree densities and the different soil types.More than 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, over 160 species of birds, including some of the rarest in Europe and 37 species of mammals (60% of the Portuguese mammals) form part of this unique mosaic of life.
