AD DIMENSIONS

The Loyolan is five (5) columns across and

has a printable area of 9 3/4” by 15 1/2”.

All advertisements are measured in a standard

unit of measurement called a column-inch

(columns across by inches tall). Use the chart

to the right to determine the width of your ad:

DETERMINING YOUR AD RATE

To determine your ad rate, multiply the number of columns by the height (in inches)

of your ad. Multiply that number by your column inch price. Ask one of our friendly

sales representatives for more details.

POLICIES+INFORMATION

STANDARDS OF ACCEPTABILITYAll advertising is subject to approval by the Student Publications acceptance committee. The committee reserves the right to refuse advertising content that does not meet The Daily Cougar’s standards of acceptance. Ads for homework, term papers, adult striptease clubs, personals, psychic readers and adoptions will not be accepted and published by The Daily Cougar. A sample of all advertised mail-order items must be submitted to the advertising manager for approval prior to scheduling or publication of an advertisement.

The Daily Cougar will not knowingly accept any advertisement that is defamatory, promotes academic dishonesty, violates any city, county, state or federal laws, or that is potentially libelous against a person based on race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, nationality or disability.

The Daily Cougar will make all reasonable efforts to see that advertising is published as accepted and that pre-printed inserts are distributed as ordered. However, The Daily Cougar will not be responsible for any consequential damages resulting from failure to do so.

The advertiser and/or agency agrees to assume full and complete responsibility and liability for the content (including text representations, illustrations, photographs, and copyrights) for any advertisements placed in The Daily Cougar. Advertising having the appearance of news must be labeled “Paid Advertising” at the top center of the ad within its border. As required by Texas state law, all political and cause advertisements must display the phrase “Paid Political Advertisement” at the top center of the ad within its border. All contract advertising is subject to the terms set forth in this rate card.

PAYMENT TERMSAll rates are net (non-commissionable and billed accordingly) and payable by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or P-card and SC Vouchers. Please make all checks payable to The University of Houston. Prepayment is required for all new advertisers, political, out-of-state and transient advertisers. By placing an advertising order, the advertiser agrees to and certifies conformity with The Daily Cougar’s policies and terms. All advertising must be paid for in advance until the advertiser has established credit with The Daily Cougar. Allow two weeks for processing of credit applications. For those advertisers with approved credit, payment is due upon the receipt of invoice. All terms and conditions on the credit application apply.

The Daily Cougar advertising rates include ad design and

layout services. Additional charges may be assessed for

extensive design, photography, graphics or typesetting

services. For those advertisers with approved credit,

payment is due by the end of the month. All terms and

conditions on the credit application apply.

CAMERA-READY TERMSThe Daily Cougar accepts camera-ready submissions

with the understanding that the ad has been approved by

the advertiser or a representative thereof for publication

without additional changes or corrections. The advertiser

is entirely responsible for insuring that camera-ready ads

are delivered to the paper in publishable form. Please

contact your advertising representative at (714) 743-5340

before sending an advertisement in electronic format.

Information on electronic submissions can also be

downloaded from http://thedailycougar.com/advertising.

To submit ads via e-mail, send files, including all placed

art and fonts, to [email protected]. Include

the advertiser’s and sales rep’s names in the e-mail

message that accompanies your ad.

POSITION REQUESTSPlacement and page position of ads will not be

guaranteed. Requests will be honored when possible.

ERRORS IN ADSThe Daily Cougar shall not be responsible for

typographical errors which do not lessen the value of

an advertisement. Liability for an omitted ad shall be

limited to rescheduling at the advertiser’s request. The

Daily Cougar is not responsible for errors in advertising

copy accepted after deadline or when advertisers or their

representatives have approved an ad containing those

errors.

The Daily Cougar will be responsible for only the first

insertion of incorrect copy or scheduling. Compensation

for errors made by The Daily Cougar is limited to the cost

of the first insertion of the ad.

CANCELLATION OF ADSAdvertisers may cancel ad space up to the advertising

deadline. Failure on the advertiser’s part to give notice

of cancellation by the deadline does not release the

advertiser from responsibility for payment of charges for

reserved ad space.

W e are a student-led, multimedia enterprise on the Auraria Campus. As a learning ground and sounding board for students

at Metropolitan State University of Denver, we support four award-winning outlets: The Metropolitan weekly newspaper, KMet Radio Internet station, The Met Report television news broadcast and Metrosphere literary and arts magazine.

Located in the heart of urban Denver, the Auraria Campus hosts nearly 50,000 students, making it the largest campus in Colorado and an economic powerhouse. Students who learn here annually spend an estimated $203.9 million in the state.

More than half the students on the Auraria Campus choose to study at MSU Denver, a fully accredited university offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. For more than 30 years, we have been a voice for students and a bridge between the worlds of business and education.

Metropolitan State College of Denver

2nd Annual

Veterans Graduation Ceremony & Breakfast

Viet Nam In Vietnam soldiers would often carry a small piece of “lucky” ordnance that had helped them or narrowly missed them. Commanders found themselves having to ban the practice, and instead gave away metal coins emblazoned with the unit crest or symbol of significance. When going into a bar, soldiers had to present their lucky piece- or risk having to buy drinks for all who did indeed present their lucky piece. The coins worked far better in this regard, as they were smaller and not as lethal!

Today In the Air Force, military training instructors award an Airman’s coin to new enlisted personnel upon completion of their United States Air Force Basic Military Training and to new officers upon completion of their Air Force Officer Training School.

Some of the ‘rules’ of the Challenge A challenge is the most common way to ensure that members are carrying their unit’s coin. The rules of a challenge are not always formalized for a unit, and may vary between organizations. Never forget, the goal of challenge coins is to forge cohesiveness, strengthen friendships, and build camaraderie. The basic ‘rules’ are:

1. The challenge only applies to those members that have been given a coin formally by their unit. This may lead to some controversy when challenges are initiated between members of different organizations and is not recommended.

2. The challenge, which can be made at any time, begins with the challenger drawing his/her coin, and slapping or placing the coin on the table or bar. In noisy environs, continuously rapping the challenge coin on a surface may initiate the challenge. Accidentally dropping a challenge coin is considered to be a deliberate challenge to all present.

3. Everyone being challenged must immediately produce the coin for their organization and anyone failing to do so must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and everyone else who has their challenge coin. However, should everyone challenged be able to produce their coin, the challenger must buy a round of drinks for the group.

STANDARDS & POLICIESWe reserve the right to reject advertising that we consider objectionable. This includes advertisements that discriminate based on the grounds of race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin or disability, and advertisements for products, services, or promotions that are illegal in the state of Texas. Ads may be refused, edited, and discontinued at any time without prior notification. All advertising is subject to review by the student staff with advice from the Advertising Coordinator. Should it be necessary, a student review will determine if the advertisement meets the standards of acceptability for The Star. The advertisers or agency agree to assume full and complete responsibility and liability for the content (which includes text representation, illustrations, photographs and copyrights) for any ads placed in The Star. We will not print news stories, pictures, or free notices as part of any advertising arrangement. Any ads that are designed to resemble news matter will be labeled accordingly. All political and cause advertisements must carry the information required by law (e.g., Paid Political Committee for John Doe, Treasurer). All political ads will receive the Local Rate and must be paid in advance. The Star provides free ad design services for our customers. Composition, artwork, and photography produced by The Star becomes the property of The Star and may not be used or reproduced in any other publication or medium without the consent of the Advertising Coordinator. If changes are needed, another proof will be provided, if requested. Make goods or price adjustments will be considered only for errors that were our fault and for which corrections were given by deadline, and that lessen the effectiveness of the total ad message. Make goods or price adjustments for errors cannot exceed the original cost of the ad. The Star will be responsible for only the first insertion of incorrect copy. It is the responsibility of the advertiser to notify us within 5 business days of an incorrect ad. We will not adjust the price of an ad for simple typographical errors or misprints that do not lessen the value of the ad. The Star assumes no responsibility for the exclusion of any ad, or for any error above the actual value of the actual space occupied by such error. The Star is not responsible for errors in ads that are submitted after deadline, when the customer has approved a proof, or when the customer has provided copy containing errors. Advertising is rarely accepted later than the stated deadlines. Late copy is accepted only if space is available and with the understanding that we will not provide a proof and will assume no responsibility for errors in advertising.
