Spiritual GivingI grew up in a wonderful Catholic family in Chillicothe, Illinois. My parents, Melvin and Mary, were great parents. Even with all the mouths to feed and bodies to clothe, I never remember lacking in any way. I was happy spending time with my brothers and sisters playing games, playing baseball in the back yard, riding bikes, and going to parks.

My parents also were excellent examples of spiritual giving. They were always faithful about getting us to Mass every Sunday; it was the priority and nothing took its place. We prayed together as a family every day at meals and at many other places. Regardless of the situation—eating meals as a family, interacting with each other in heated discussions when playing, or dealing with others whom we didn’t get along with—my parents showed my siblings and me how to respond in a spiritually appropriate way.

Our Catholic education from grade school through high school was another sign of my parent’s spiritual giving. Putting eight children through Catholic school was an act of heroism! My dad worked two to three jobs to ensure we could go to a Catholic school. He and mom worked as a team because they both knew that Catholic education, no matter how much it cost, was a spiritual and formative investment in the lives of their children.

Jesus taught us to give our all as He did for us, without counting the cost. This is what is so inspiring about Catholic education: The ability to teach our young people to give their all like Jesus. Our administration, staff, teachers, parents, donors, and alumni are focused on spiritual giving. Spiritual giving is the one thing I have tried to live more and more, especially as a priest. Every day I try to live out spiritual giving by giving my best in what I do as a priest, president, brother, friend, neighbor, teacher, and uncle.

I pray that as we are in our 151st year as a Catholic secondary school in the Diocese of Peoria, we will advance and grow in our ability to spiritually give to each other, especially to our students and parents, like Jesus who gave his all for us.

Dear Friends of the Irish,

I want to thank you for all of your support during our last academic year. Your financial support has helped Peoria Notre Dame in a number of ways. A number of safety and campus improvements were made this summer. These upgrades include repairs to our current academic building involving concrete work, painting, restriping of the parking lot, and the installation of a new security door system. Our athletic programs have benefited from an enhanced weight room and scoreboards. All of these efforts have been completed because of your generosity and kindness. Additionally we have been able to increase our faculty base salaries to help attract and retain the best and brightest teaching staff. Please know that on behalf of our students and staff we are very grateful for your assistance.

Yours in Christ,Charlie Roy - Principal

The Peoria Notre Dame Pastors’ Board consists of the pastors from the 21

parishes that support the mission of our Catholic high school. In Peoria, we are

very fortunate to have this high school that excels in forming our students in mind, body

and spirit. I can attest, as pastor of St. Philomena Parish, of the quality education and

faith experience the children from my parish receive as they continue their formation at

Peoria Notre Dame. Because of this, I understand the financial donation and commitment

each parish makes from its ordinary income to support the operation of the school.

The Pastors’ Board has always been in support of our Catholic High Schools in Peoria.

They financially provide an investment every year for the good of the school. They also

provide tuition assistance to many of their families who desire a Catholic education, but

cannot fully fund it. Many years ago with the merger of the two schools, a fund drive was

held to support the future of Peoria Notre Dame. With the funds available, Peoria Notre

Dame administration requested a loan from the Pastor’s Board to purchase additional

land at the new site with the existing land. As fund raising continued for the new athletic

fields, the loan payment from PND to the Pastors’ Board seemed contrary to our common

mission. Recently, the Pastors’ Board voted to gift the $1.1 million loan to the campaign.

The Pastors’ Board firmly believes in the Catholic formation of our children and thinks

this project is something very much needed for the kids and for the future of Catholic

secondary education. The pastors pray that these gifts not only serve to advance Peoria

Notre Dame, but emphasize our support of the new athletic complex and future school.

May the Lord bless this work already begun.

In Christ’s Peace,

— Fr. David P. Richardson - Pastors’ Board Chair

Catholic education is a solid building block for leaders in any community. Our community is blessed to have a strong base with many wonderful Catholic grade schools, and the best Catholic high school in the region. We are only missing an improved state of the art campus (athletic and academic) that our students and faculty deserve, and will use to become even more accomplished. Peoria Notre Dame is a cherished jewel that all of our

why we giveAlumni should be proud of today, and as it grows in the future. The constant that has always been present in our rich history through Academy of Our Lady, Spalding Institute, Bergan and now PND, is that our students receive a faith based education which expands their minds and hearts.

Choosing to give to Catholic schools is a tradition that was started in our family by our parents. They understood the impact that a Catholic education has on a person, they valued it, and taught us to value it. High School is a time that is difficult, exciting, and full of personal growth. Our kids need a place where they are taught to respect themselves and others. PND gives them an environment where they can turn to God daily without hesitation, and become stronger students of life. Catholic secondary education gives teenagers the base necessary to become confident accomplished adults. We need to be able to offer this experience to any family that believes in it.

We can help students realize that society does not have to be dominated by drugs and violence but rather by moral principles, religion, self esteem, and confidence. The youth of our community and country are starving for our leadership and direction in their quests for maturity. Maury Cicciarelli stated this in an alumni newsletter about his reason for giving:

“When you donate, you have to believe in the cause and see the results. Catholic secondary education is a worthy cause and the results are shown every time you hear about another one of our students or graduates making a positive difference in our community, and communities around the world.”

why we give

We feel that Catholic education forms a strong foundation for

helping children become adults of character, integrity, and faith.

We were both blessed to attend Catholic schools throughout

our lives and appreciate the sacrifices others made to make

those schools available to us. Part of the benefit of attending

Catholic schools was the understanding that those values were

important enough that your parents did sacrifice for them -

putting their faith into action, not just talking about it.

We are glad to share in building the new Peoria Notre Dame

High School for the generations to come.

Our country, our communities and our churches need tomorrow’s leaders well grounded in

our Catholic faith. Notre Dame High School is the best place for that formation to take place.

So we are investing in our community’s future and the future of our Church.

Secular society is invading our freedom to practice our faith as we have been taught. As

Christians we cannot remain unresponsive to these ongoing attacks. In fact, we have been

commissioned by Christ to be “the light of the world” (Matt 5:14) and “teaching them to observe

all that I have commanded you” (Matt 28:20). Every Catholic needs to share in the task of

Christian formation and we need to feel a real sense of urgency to do so. Beyond that, Christ

continues to call us to build up His Kingdom through the use of our time, talent and treasure.

Notre Dame High School provides the best formation opportunities for our youth to prepare

them to meet the challenges our society will present in the future, which is why we give to

Peoria Notre Dame High School.

why we give

I give to the scholarship fund for several reasons. One reason is I like the policy of the

diocese that makes a Catholic education available for everyone, no matter what their

economic status. I am pleased to repeat that to anyone who tells me they can’t go to Notre

Dame because it costs too much. I don’t like to think of myself teaching at a school for the

economically elite, and this policy reminds me that the education given here is for anyone

who really wants it. It is only fair that I ‘put my money where my mouth is’, because I know

the money has to come from somewhere, and I get a decent salary here myself. Another

reason is, as a parent with children who have gone through Catholic education and are in

the system, I always appreciated when someone showed charity to me by helping with the

education of my children. I know my parish contributed a share, that third party funding

played a role, and I received a discount from being a teacher here. Another reason is out

of gratitude. In my opinion, my children received the best education possible in the Peoria

area, and I received assistance in their formation in the Catholic faith as well. Another

reason: I consider this a good place to give ‘alms’ because I believe every penny is going

to someone who really can use it, not to a middle man. Most importantly, I see Catholic

education as an important arm of evangelization. It is now, as always, a way that the Good

News of Jesus Christ reaches not only students and teachers, but whole families, and the

community at large. I want to be part of that!

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Annual Appeal

The Annual Appeal is an unrestricted source of income that gives the school the opportunity to allocate funds where the need is greatest on an annual basis. Peoria Notre Dame relies on gifts to the Annual Appeal as well as tuition, fees and proceeds from special events to meet operating costs each year. Each gift to the Annual Appeal helps cover the difference between tuition charged and the actual cost to educate each student.

Peoria Notre Dame Scholarship Fund

The Peoria Notre Dame Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to our students and families to help pay for the students’ education expenses. Peoria Notre Dame provides over $500,000 each year in financial assistance to our students.

Peoria Notre Dame Endowed Scholarship

Peoria Notre Dame High School provides the opportunity to establish a named scholarship. A minimum endowment of $30,000 is required. Endowment pledges may be paid in a single or multiple installments over a three year period. Ninety-five percent of the income from the fund will be used by Peoria Notre Dame annually to award scholarships to current student(s) based on financial needs and selection criteria, if designated by the endowment donor.

Peoria Notre Dame High School Capital Campaign

The Honoring Our Past – Building Our Future Capital Campaign is a project that will assure top quality academic and athletic facilities for the next generation of Peoria Notre Dame students. We will begin with our new athletic complex on the 71.5 acre site located at Willow Knolls and Allen Road in Peoria.

Our athletic complex will include the following facilities:• Football/Soccer/Track stadium with artificial turf, concession area, restrooms, locker room facilities,

equipment storage and parking• Two baseball fields, two softball fields, concession area and press box• Six lighted tennis courts• Practice football and soccer fields

The Peoria Notre Dame Foundation, with assets of $7.2 million as of June, 30, 2013, exists to develop, promote and sustain Catholic secondary education in the area surrounding Peoria, Illinois. The foundation consists of many funds which provide financial support to the school in the form of operating funds, faculty support, fine arts support and tuition assistance including:

The Livingston Teacher Fund

The Livingston Teacher Fund was established in 1997 by two generous benefactors of Peoria Notre Dame to supplement the salaries of Peoria Notre Dame faculty and staff. Each year 95% of the earnings of the fund are distributed to the returning full-time staff who have completed at least one year of service.

The Shamrock Fund

The Shamrock Fund, similar to the PND Annual Appeal, provides the administration and finance committee of the school with an annual supplementary source of unrestricted income for operating expenses of the school.

The Livingston Auditorium Fund

This endowed fund exists to provide funds for the maintenance of and improvements to the school’s auditorium.

Teacher Continuing Education Fund

This fund provides tuition reimbursement to any full-time teacher or staff who has completed two or more years of service to Peoria Notre Dame. The employees must be working towards a Masters degree or higher that mutually benefits the employee and the school. Peoria Notre Dame will provide 50% of the cost of tuition associated with each class.

Various Scholarship Funds

Several funds exist within the foundation that provides for specific assistance to students based on certain criteria set forth in the underlying donor agreements. The funds are distributed at the end of each year to the school to help fund the $500,000 of financial assistance awarded annually to our students and families.
