dear Friends,
thanks to your generosity, ForKids was able to ensure more than 600 children
in hampton roads had a safe place to stay, tutoring to catch up in school, hot
nutritious meals, and other wraparound services necessary to break the cycle
of homelessness and poverty this year. Yet clearly more work is needed. more
than 10,000 households called the ForKids housing crisis hotline over the last
12 months in need of support.
as ForKids celebrates our 25th anniversary this year, it has become apparent
that we need to address the shrinking supply of affordable housing and the
educational challenges facing homeless children. despite ForKids’ exponential
growth, we have been losing ground in our fight against poverty and
homelessness. the poverty rate rose from 11.7% to 13.1% in hampton roads
and requests for shelter continue to climb. With this in mind, the ForKids
25th anniversary commission was formed, comprised of key community
leaders to address the link between affordable housing and the educational
advancement of children in hampton roads. While the challenges are
daunting, we are excited about the potential for a transformational change in
how the region addresses the root causes of poverty and homelessness.
We look forward to keeping you posted on our 25th anniversary
commission’s work and our continuing growth in our regional programs. all of
us at ForKids are grateful that, despite our challenges, we can count on you to
once again meet the growing needs of the children and families we serve. on
behalf of our families, board and staff, thank you!
With our deepest gratitude,
marie Finch

2013 ForKids Phoenix Outstanding Achievement Honoree
lacy.lacy first experienced homelessness as a single mother
with her 18-month old son, alex. She had suddenly found
herself evicted from her apartment shortly after losing
her job and having trouble making ends meet. With no
options available, lacy and her baby had no choice but to
sleep in their car for two weeks.
lacy and alex were able to connect to haven house,
ForKids’ emergency shelter, where they received the
much needed support and assistance to get back on their
feet. Soon lacy had steady employment at a fast food
restaurant during the day and at a cleaning service during
the evening. lacy and alex progressed into transitional
housing and lacy was selected to work with the ForKids
gardening angels program as the Program assistant.
however, in 2004, things once again took a turn for
the worse when lacy was diagnosed with lupus.
She decided to move herself and alex to texas to seek
support from family. things did not work out in texas
and after a year, lacy and alex found themselves back in
norfolk and homeless once again.
in 2005, lacy reentered ForKids’ program and obtained a
job with norfolk Public Schools as a bus driver. after 30
days at haven house, lacy and alex found an apartment
and finally the stability they had sought for so long.
lacy continued to grow in her roles at norfolk Public
Schools and has advanced to the role of transportation
manager. in addition, she has earned her associates
degree and is on track to complete her bachelors
this december from St. leo university. lacy is a true
inspiration to many, including her now 17-year old son,
who plans to enter the marine corps upon graduation.
ForKids honored lacy at the Phoenix awards
on november 7, 2013 for her remarkable tenacity and
courage, overcoming significant personal challenges
and breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty for
her family.
congratulations lacy for the distance you have traveled
and for how far we know you will go!

Jeannette’s New Milestonemany of you remember Jeannette when she first came to
ForKids in 2008. She and her mother, deborah, lived in one
of our permanent supportive homes for nearly five years.
though deborah struggled with physical and mental health
issues, she strived to put her daughter first.
Jeannette has always been focused and determined
despite the hardships and struggles she and her mom
faced. in school she excelled. She loved studying Japanese
and also participated in the nJrotc, where she made
rank several times. however, Jeannette struggled in math.
algebra threatened her ability to graduate but Jeannette
would not give up, and neither would ForKids. Jeannette’s
children’s education advocate worked closely with her
teacher to get Jeannette the additional help she needed.
as time went on, Jeannette no longer needed the special
education services and was given the opportunity to leave
the program. Jeannette is the epitome of resiliency.
at the end of June, Jeannette reached two remarkable
milestones. She graduated from high school with honors,
and received a merit scholarship to attend tidewater
community college. this past august, Jeannette &
deborah moved from ForKids housing and into their own
home, another important milestone.
in her scholarship essay, Jeannette stated that with a
degree in nursing, she could gain the skills necessary to
help others, like her mother, who have experienced chronic
pain. She ended her essay by saying, “i look forward
to seeing happy faces and helping to change the lives of
many people.”
We look forward to that too, but also know that at ForKids,
she already has.

on behalf of the board and staff of ForKids, inc., i am
pleased to report to you that the organization has once
again completed a very successful year financially. the
organization generated a small surplus, received its 22nd
consecutive “unqualified” audit from cherry bekaert and a
second consecutive 4 Star rating by charity navigator.
as a board member, i am most encouraged by the fact that
ForKids grew its programs by more than $300,000 while
keeping administrative and fundraising expenses flat. this
was accomplished through increased support from the
community, including the united Way. ForKids continues to
be a lean, mission driven organization, generating positive
outcomes substantiated by both the statistics and stories
contained in the pages of this annual report.
however, as a citizen i am deeply concerned by the
increased need evidenced by the thousands of families that
reached out to ForKids for shelter and housing assistance
last year and the lack of public funding or planning to
address the needs of homeless families and children across
the region. this reality must change if our community is to
thrive. ForKids is committed to not just its own financial
health and the well-being of its families, but to improving
the health and economic well-being of the entire region.
on behalf of the board, thank you for your contributions
to ForKids’ vital work. Your support truly makes our work
possible. i ask for your continued financial support and
advocacy on behalf of the families we serve, as we strive
together to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty
for families and children in our community.

Giving More Than Her Timebarbara hall, pictured above, has given our kids nearly
200 hours of her time. When barbara came to ForKids
this year, we knew that we were getting a former
educator who wanted to work with children, but we had
no idea what we were in for! barbara hit the ground
running and found her niche tutoring the kids in the
transitional and permanent supportive housing programs
at elizabeth Place.
ForKids children’s education advocate, Jay Keirle, cannot
say enough about barbara. “barbara is amazing! i don’t
know what we’d do without her. She tutors with us
tuesday through thursday and during Jumpstart*. She is
an excellent volunteer and we are so lucky to have her.”
barbara was so moved by our kids that she decided to
volunteer at two community schools and request to work
specifically with ForKids’ kids. When the kids see her in
the hallway at their school, they are always excited to see
her, running to her and shouting her name. most of the
teachers know her and recognize how special she is to
the kids.
barbara’s greatest gifts are her consistency and her
knowledge of the school system. Jay added, “she is
warm and caring - however she always manages to get
down to business with them. Whenever the kids answer
something correctly, she smiles and says to them ‘oh,
kiss your brain!’”
