2013ANNUAL REPORT

GvlTechFoundation_AnnReport_2013.indd 1 8/18/14 2:33 PM

We are pleased to share with you this report of the results of our 2013 fiscal year. We could not have achieved these results without you, and we are grateful for your support. Together we impact many lives every day.

The past year brought us a number of successes: • Our Annual Fund campaign set a record with more than $1.5 million in new cash and pledges received. • We received more than $1.3 million of “in kind” gifts. • Our employee campaign raised more than $62,000. • Our Entrepreneurs Forum gala had a wonderful turnout and raised a record amount. • Our McAlister Square operations continued to pay an increased distribution to the Foundation, which we used to further support the College. The University Center and other non-profit organizations and governmental entities occupy most of our space and we are 88% leased.

The College’s mission is to provide access to a higher education for as many people as possible. We have students that graduated at the top of their high school class who have chosen to do the first two years of their college work here in our Honors College before transferring to Clemson, USC-Upstate, Furman, USC, or other four-year institutions. We have students who dropped out of high school but got their GED and now are pursuing a two-year Associate Degree. We have students who have jobs but are taking classes to improve job skills, students who are taking classes to be able to change jobs, and unemployed individuals who are here to gain skills to obtain employment once again. Providing a strong education for all of these individuals can be a challenge, especially for those with few resources. Thanks to your contributions to the Foundation, we are able to provide scholarships that provide access to education for many of these students. However that need is growing greatly. Additionally, we must continue to keep our programs up-to-date with the same equipment used in business and industry to ensure our graduates receive relevant training that makes them employable.

It is because of you that many people have improved their quality of life and are contributing to our area’s economic recovery. We thank you for all you have done and solicit your continuing support.

Sincerely,

Robert E. Howard, President Greenville Tech Foundation S. Hunter Howard, Jr. Chairman

...Thank you so much for rewarding this effort! You have made a huge difference in my life and the lives of my husband and daughter...I hope to get my nurse practitioner degree and provide care to families in medically-underserved areas as well as participate in medical mission trips. Someday, I hope to help other students the way the Greenville Tech Foundation has helped me.

Heidi H.Nadeen Duggan Barton Memorial Nursing Endowed Scholarship

...I am currently majoring in Aircraft Maintenance Technology. I have always had the desire to pursue a career in aircraft maintenance/manufacturing and your assistance made it possible for me to attain that goal. The financial assistance

you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses, and it will allow me to concentrate more of my time for studying.

A Look to the Future.

As an open door institution, we make our opportunities available to all, and thanks to the generosity of our donors, those doors open quite a bit wider. With financial assistance, students who are juggling bills and tuition get the help they need to meet their goals. And when these students enroll, our donors see that the classrooms they learn in are well outfitted, and instructors have the resources they need to provide the highest quality education. For the opportunities our donors make possible, we are truly grateful.

With the assistance of donors, we’ve been working to create opportunities since 1962. That means we help businesses seize opportunities by giving them the skilled workers they need to succeed and grow. And we give individuals the relevant skills they need to qualify for the best jobs today and those on the horizon for the future. Our responsibility for workforce development leads us to meet the evolving needs of employers through efforts such as the Center for Manufacturing Innovation (CMI), which we envision as an internationally recognized learning environment that integrates research and education. From the planning stage onward, the CMI has been a close partnership between employers and educators, and one in which Greenville Technical College is joining with Greenville County Schools and Clemson University to create the future workforce.

As the integrated approach at the CMI illustrates, lines between educational levels are fading as we come together to meet our communities’ goals. Once, working together meant creating agreements that allowed students to transfer easily from the two-year college to the four-year university. Today, we’re creating a new model in which students move seamlessly from K-12 to the two-year level and on to the four-year institution with no duplication of coursework and no loss of credits. Tomorrow, we may even work in partnership with four-year colleges to offer applied baccalaureate degrees in areas such as manufacturing technology and nursing. These would build on the hands-on training provided in an associate degree while providing the higher-level skills that would allow students to advance and employers to remain competitive.

Our mission is to drive personal and economic growth through learning. We are fortunate to have the support of other educators, employers, legislators, students, alumni, employees, and donors in that effort. Working together, we are creating opportunities for business, for students, and for South Carolina.
