2013 Organizational Changes and Awards

In 2013, Random Acts saw a year of continued growth. Under the energetic leader-ship of Executive Director Cinde Monsam, we have expanded our reach and aware-ness through our completion of acts of random kindness. Our supporters have worked tirelessly to help us in our mission of conquering the world one random act of kindness at a time. Through both small and large acts of kindness, we continue to strive to have a tremendous impact on the individuals we touch. Through all of

this, we have worked hard to create policies and structures to better facilitate the wonderful acts people have been doing around the world. In 2013, we were also

honored to be the recipients of the BEST CHARITY IN SOCIAL MEDIA SHORTY AWARD for the second year in a row. This continues to be a huge honor for us as we work

to reach across the globe to a number of different audiences.

Commitment to Nonprofit Best Practices and Transparency

We have worked diligently over the last year to ensure that our policies are in line with best practices in the nonprof-it world. Although we are a completely virtual organization without traditional offices, it is still vital that we have policies on non-discrimination, whistleblowing, communication, and timesheets for our all-volunteer staff.

In 2013, we were also awarded Gold-level Participant status by GuideStar Exchange. This puts us in the top level for GuideStar, which assures that we have shown our or-ganization to be both impactful and up to date. As part of our com-

mitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency, we provide our supporters with detailed reports, such as this one, about our activities and finances. It is important to us that all of our supporters have full confidence that their generously donated funds are being put to use in effective and important ways.

Acts and Sponsored Projects Thanks to our supporters, we were able to sponsor a num-

ber of amazing acts and projects this year. We helped a middle school principal continue his attendance incentive program at MS 53 Brian Piccolo School in New York City. With this pro-gram, both attendance and grade point averages skyrocketed. We partnered with the Kalmat Foundation to help support children in Sri Lanka. We gathered school supplies for Espoir des Enfants and helped fund uniforms for students. We funded the rebuilding of a playground in the Philippines so it would be safe for students to play in. We were also ecstatic to fund over 100 individual acts from people all over the globe!

We continued to work with a number of wonderful partners, and fostered some great new partnerships as well. Our 2013 partners included Creation Entertainment, the Hub Productions, Rogue Events, HELP of Southern Nevada, Speedway Children’s Charities, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, HomeFront, Sa-cred Heart Mission, Manly Women’s Shelter, Vickery Meadow Food Pantry, Daily Bread Food Bank,

Connections for Abused Women and their Children, the Downtown Women’s Center, and GISHWHES. Each of these partnerships marks the opportunity to promote kindness in different areas of the world.

210 people participated in our second annual endurance event with a total of $74,028 being raised. This was a 40% increase in Endure 4 Kindness (E4K)-gen-erated revenue from 2012, and we had participants from 13 different countries across the world.

Excluding staff members of Random Acts, the top two contributors to the E4K fundraising efforts were as below:

Actor Osric Chau spent 25 hours (adding

an extra hour to allow for the switch to Daylight Savings Time) playing the vid-eo game League of Legends and inviting fans to play with him. He raised a total of $5,310.

Team MMAD spent 24 hours baking 280 loaves of bread which they took out the following day to hand out to homeless people who weren’t able to get to a shel-ter. They raised $1,600.

On March 10, Random Acts launched its second Annual Melee of Kindness. This is a day of kindness where we encourage as many of our supporters as possible to go out and do kind things for others.

Class ActIn 2013, we started a new program called CLASS ACT. This

newest venture is an annual award program aimed at any classroom, grade level(s), sanctioned school group or entire school. We want to encourage and inspire people of all ages to go out into their local communi-ties and really make a difference.

This international competition features an award of a trophy and $3,000 US for classes or schools that em-

bark on a project to make their school and community a better place. This exciting venture allows us to recognize

the great good that is happening in schools and classrooms all over the world!

Random Acts hosts awards that are aimed towards allowing people to reward acts of kindness they have witnessed or have been on the re-

ceiving end of. The prize is a cash payment made to a charity of the winner’s choos-ing as well as a certificate and some items bearing the Random Acts logo.

We received 21 nominees for Semi-Annu-al Awards for Random Acts (SAARA). There was a broad spectrum of acts, ranging from a benefit concert put on for the families af-fected by the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, through to puppies from a local shelter being taken out to spend the day with some firefighters in order to get the puppies used to human contact and to provide some much needed stress relief for the firefighters.

1ST PRIZE: $3,000 was awarded to the Kamloops Branch of the BCSPCA for their medical fund.

Michelle Virdee, Crystal LaBrie, and Andrina Virdee

Crystal had been fostering a group of puppies since birth. When they were old enough, Michelle, Crystal & Andrina took the puppies to a local fire station to allow them to socialize with the firefighters.

2ND PRIZE: $1000 was awarded to Women’s Shelter, Inc., and $1000 was awarded to Paws and Claws Humane Society.

Jonya Pacey, Kerry Kittleson, Melanie Olson, and Nicole Herman

This was a group brought together by a GISHWHES team. They made bunnies that contained encouraging messages to be released into the wild on March 10. The group was able to spread the bunnies to various places throughout North America.

3RD PRIZE: $1000 was awarded to the Coming Together for Newtown Scholar-ship.

Doug Bogan, Mike Drogalis, Mario

Baggio, and Melody Curran

In response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Doug, Mike, Mario, and Melody organized the “Come Together for Newtown” benefit concert. The concert served as both a way for the community to heal, as well as a way to raise money for the Newtown Scholarship Association, which will support a graduating Newtown senior who attended Sandy Hook Elemen-tary.

SMILES: $500 was awarded to The Community West Foundation’s ‘Caring Continues’ Fund.

Bob King

Bob organized a Facebook group to surprise a fellow runner, Jen Golentiz, who was battling cancer. The group raised funds to assist with medical costs, but more importantly gave the emotional support of over 800 runners to Jen.

Our three-year Hope to Haiti campaign ended on a “housewarming” theme to celebrate the completion of the Jacmel Children’s Center, which we first set out to build in 2011. We surpassed our

2013 fundraising goal of $150,000 and took 24 volunteers on a trip to Haiti from June 21-28. Singer and songwriter Jason Manns raised over $13,000 for us during a special Stageit concert and joined us on this trip.

Seeing the finished center for the first time was an emotional experience for many; here was not just a build-ing we had built, but a collective dream we had realized. Workers were still putting the finishing touches to the pavement around the building, and we helped mix cement and sweep the floors. The next day an opening ceremony was held, complete with a choir, cake, and the JCC’s first resident, Stephen, sleeping through everyone’s speeches in a volunteer’s lap.

During the rest of our days in Haiti, we helped the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC) students paint their new home, and they taught us how to make mosaic bottles. As had become tradition at the ACFFC, the girls pulled some of us aside to do our hair. At the Faith and Love Orphanage, Marlaine welcomed us and once again treat-ed us to their Sunday church service. Cinde, our executive director, spoke at the service, and Jason got out his guitar to lead everyone in singing Hallelujah. During our visit to the Espoir des Enfants Orphanage, volunteers helped paint the house and Jacques sang us a Haitian folk song while strumming along on Jason’s guitar.

Toward the end of the trip we spent some time touring Port-au-Prince again and also visited a music school, to whom Jason donated his guitar. n

Random Acts’ financial records for 2013 reflect that not only did our Hope to Haiti destination proj-ect continue to glean your interest and dollars, but our other projects’ balance sheets recorded an increase in financial support as well year over year.

You generously donated $380,000 dollars, 3.7% more than 2012! The vast majority of our donations were directed to our Hope to Haiti project, but we were able to increase

our funding of Acts of Kindness by 41% over 2012. We continued to keep our overhead and administrative costs exceptionally low; representing only 4.9% of our revenue.

Thank you so much for your continued commitment and support to Random Acts.
