I was diagnosed with ALS 10 years ago in February, so I have gotten to know the doctors, nurses, therapists and health care workers who make up a comprehensive team. Many have cared for me long term, and we have seen some new faces. All are knowledgeable professionals who anticipate my needs. They also listen carefully to our concerns, and respond with useful suggestions and resources. They show enormous empathy and compassion for us. The staff are open to new ideas based on the needs of the ALS community and are willing to take on new challenges. ... We are deeply grateful to be in such marvelous care.” For more information about this clinic, please contact the clinic coordinator, Leslie Phidd, RN, at 612-624-7134. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR COLUMN

I n May, I’ll be headed to Washington D.C. to share my story about ALS. People with ALS, their caregivers and families, and dedicated staff and

volunteers from The ALS Association will be attending our annual advocacy and public policy conference, a wonderful event where we have the opportunity to talk with our legislators about important ALS issues. It is one of our best avenues to gain more funding for ALS research, and I could not be more excited for this opportunity.

I began thinking about the importance of advocacy in our daily efforts. Advocacy is not just about talking to senators and members of Congress. It has a much broader definition that applies to each of us. It is simply showing active verbal support for a cause. This could be advocating for someone with ALS who is no longer able to communicate their needs. It could simply be

sharing your ALS story with a friend, co-worker or neighbor. You could take it a step further and engage others in your efforts, like putting a team together for a Walk to Defeat ALS event. Being an advocate is more enjoyable as a team!

The bottom line is, sharing how ALS has affected your life helps spread awareness about the disease, the programs and services available to people and the opportunities available for involvement. The message becomes stronger when we speak out about our shared cause. For me, I’ll be sharing about the programs and services available through our Chapter, the stories of all of the people I have met, the need for increased research funding to find a cause and cure for ALS, and how important it is for everyone to work together to support the ALS community. How will you share your ALS story?

Cleaning House?

W e are always in need of items that individuals can use when eating, dressing, cooking, driving, or doing other household tasks. Items used most often are rocker knives, utensils

with built-up handles, scoop plates, book holders, key holders, writing and typing aids, zipper pulls, button hooks, and adapted scissors. If you have any of these items or other similar items that you are no longer using, we would greatly appreciate receiving them. Thanks to your generosity, items

can be used by others in the ALS community. Please contact Cheryl or Nancy at the Chapter if you have any questions at 888-672-0484 or [email protected].

The ALS Association, MN/ND/SD Chapter Mourns the Death of Lori Sterner

L ori Sterner was diagnosed with ALS in 1993. She died in March 2013. After her ALS diagnosis, Lori was determined to make a difference in her life and the life

of all others living with ALS. She and other dedicated volunteers were instrumental in getting the Chapter started here in Minnesota. Because of these efforts, the Chapter will celebrate its 20th year of assisting people with ALS and their families, by offering free programs and services. Lori was a member of the first Board of Directors at the Chapter. She felt fortunate that her disease was slowly progressing and because of that, she was able to continue working. In fact, in 2012 she was honored by her employer, Goodwill Easter Seals/MN, with their Advancing the Mission Award for ‘consistently and passionately’ living the mission of that organization. It was part of her lifeline dedication, both in her work life and in volunteering, to help serve individuals with disabilities. We know Lori was grateful to her employer and her co-workers for the accommodations they made for her and she felt that with their help, they gave her life ‘meaningful purpose’ and that her ‘contributions were worthwhile’. The ALS Association is grateful for the many ‘gifts’ that Lori gave to our organization and to the ALS community, and we extend our condolences to her family and friends.

THE

The Power of Music By Danielle Wall

I glanced up from my fingertips on the piano as the last chord resonated throughout the air and saw my grandpa’s blue eyes smile at me from his wheelchair across the

room. I had finally mastered “The Entertainer”, my grandpa’s favorite song. I continued to stare proudly in his direction and was struck with a pang of sorrow when I noticed how withered his body had become. A few years earlier, my grandpa, the man I considered to be my mentor and hero, had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS, a horrible disease that kills nerve cells and deprives the affected person of motor skills, leading to paralysis and death. Now that the disease had progressed a few years, I sadly noticed its detrimental effects on my grandpa’s body more and more each day.

At first, it was simply a little trouble walking, but each year the disease had taken more away from the man I adored since childhood, to the point where he could no longer communicate and barely had the strength to swallow food. My hero was slowly being cheated of every part of his body, and there was nothing he could do about it. Gone were the happy days of fishing, bread-baking, and crossword puzzles. These simple things I would never again share with the man I looked up to so much. Never again would I hear one of his adventurous Navy stories or hear his booming laugh from his recliner in the living room. Yet here was one thing the disease could not take away from this courageous man, and that was his love for music. Suddenly, I realized how important my musical performances were for my loving advisor. Each time I poured my heart into a Mozart sonata or belted out “Tomorrow” from Annie, or even labored

over a few warm-up scales, I saw my grandpa light up and forget about his failing body. I began to understand that if I could bring him even just a little happiness through the gift of music, I knew that there would be hope, not just for the man I admired, but for me and for the rest of my family as well.

Every year during my annual family visits to Minnesota, I would put on musical performances for my grandpa. These recitals were always much anticipated by my grandparents and usually were the focal point of my visits. For the performance, the whole family would drive to the Mayo clinic and watch me play on the majestic grand piano in the lobby for the employees and doctors of the hospital. When my grandpa had to move to the nursing home, and became too sick to travel to the clinic, he refused to allow this setback to halt the performances and made sure that I was scheduled to perform in front of the residents at the nursing home. Every time my grandpa heard my voice echo throughout the room, or heard the delicate stroke of a piano chord, he would break down into tears of joy, tears of pride for my accomplishment, tears shed simply for the appreciation of the beauty of music. Seeing the happiness I could bring to the man I loved so dearly through my musical performances, helped me cope with the devastation of his disease and brought a beat of cheerfulness to an otherwise trying time. The happiness my grandpa felt from my music permeated throughout the whole family, which in turn filled me with a deep-seated inner joy. In those moments when my grandpa’s tears combined with the melody of a Beethoven concerto, I almost believed that he had conquered his disease altogether. I had never seen him feel so alive.

Now that my grandpa is gone, I still play my music with the same passion I did when I played for him, and I still see his face in my mind, as I strum a humble chord or two on my guitar. Knowing that I brought my own personal hero joy while he was coping with a devastating disease in his last days, allows me to be at peace with his passing. Although I miss him terribly and wish more than anything to play music for him again, even just one more time, I know that my grandpa and I have an indescribable, invisible bond that forever transcends the confines of life and death. My hero’s memory is always in my mind every time I perform whether I am playing my guitar for a few friends or singing the national anthem at an Atlanta Braves game. Wherever the place, my grandpa’s presence will always be with me, and will forever shape my path as a musician.

THE

CURRENT ALS RESEARCH STUDIES IN MINNESOTA

ALS Center of Excellence, Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), Berman Center (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

The ALS Center of Excellence at HCMC has completed the Ceftriaxone and Dexpramipexole trials. Both studies will likely have study results available by the end of the year or early 2013.

Educating for empowerment & quality of life: A study of ALS patients & caregivers: The ALS Center of Excellence at Hennepin County Medical Center is partnering with the University of St. Thomas to build patient-centered models for the ALS journey. Patients and their caregivers are fully informed participants who are educated to collaborate with health care providers to determine courses of treatments that are specific to each patient’s goals and abilities. A research team from the University of St. Thomas is currently working with newly diagnosed individuals with ALS and their caregivers to better understand their needs. Others from the University are seeking to understand the work of each person in the interdisciplinary team and their needs in order to identify areas where communication, resources and support can be improved for people with ALS, their caregivers and health care providers.

The ALS Center of Excellence at HCMC has two new studies that are now open for enrollment:

Nuedexta is an FDA approved medication that is currently used to treat the symptom of pseudobulbar affect in ALS patients. The new study will determine if Nuedexta can also improve other bulbar symptoms such as swallowing and speech difficulty and an excess of saliva. The medication is not a treatment for ALS but is used for symptom relief in those patients who have the bulbar form of ALS. Participation will be for approximately 3 months. Participants must be at least 18 years of age with no prior use of Nuedexta. Participants should be located close to the study site and be able to follow study tasks. Tirasemtiv is being investigated as a potential new therapy for the improvement of muscle weakness and muscle fatigue in patients with ALS. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Tirasemtiv versus placebo when taken with or without riluzole and how well it is tolerated in patients with ALS. This is a phase IIb study. Patients will be on study drug for approximately 12 weeks. Certain eligibility criteria must be met to be able to participate.

If interested in either of these studies, please contact the study coordinator, Cindy Rohde, RN at 612-341-7923 or by e-mail at [email protected].

To be included on our research alert list and for information on upcoming trials, please contact Cindy Rohde, RN, ALS research coordinator, at 612-341-7923.

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) The Mayo Clinic ALS Center has completed enrollment for the NIH funded study on markers of oxidative cell injury and their association with ALS, and is not actively recruiting for any other ALS studies at this time.

University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview (Minneapolis, Minnesota) A research study evaluating an investigational medication for people with ALS is currently being conducted by Dr. David Walk at the University of Minnesota ALS Clinic. Enrollment has been completed for this study. The University of Minnesota ALS Clinic is conducting an observational study of the effect of botulinum toxin injections on speech ability in patients with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

You may qualify for the study if you: Have been diagnosed with PLS or ALS Have been prescribed botulinum toxin injections for drooling or jaw stiffness For more information, contact [email protected] or 612-624-7745.

THE

FANTASTIC CHAPTER FUNDRAISERS

Black Woods Blizzard Tour

T he Black Woods Blizzard Tour – A Ride to Fight ALS is the largest snowmobile fundraising event in the world. It

has now raised more than $5.1 million in its 14 year history. Participating in the event were 182 snowmobile riders and 60 sponsors, held January 30 - February 2, 2013. While snow conditions and low temperatures were once again a challenge, riders were not deterred, riding this year in the Lake Vermilion and Two Harbors areas.

Terry Steinbach, former Minnesota Twins catcher and current bench coach, served as the celebrity host of the event for the 14th year. Joining Steinbach on the ride again this year were Minnesota Twins manager, Ron Gardenhire and former Minnesota Twins greats, Kent Hrbek and Tim Laudner.

This year’s top fundraiser was the Polaris team of Roseau, Minnesota. The team raised more than $111,000 through local community events and pledges. Jane Evans, representing Polaris, accepted the 2013 Polaris 600 Indy ES snowmobile donated by Polaris Industries. The sled will be used to raise more funds for ALS and the 2014 Black Woods Blizzard Tour. Second place went to Minnesota Twins Manager, Ron Gardenhire, who raised $25,000. Coming in third was Dave Telschow, Savage, Minnesota, who raised $21,500. Ted Kowalski, Prior Lake, Minnesota, raised $12,600 to take home fourth place honors. Rounding out the top five was Jeff Thompson, Cologne, Minnesota, who raised $11,940.

Winning the Wes Blakeslee Most Valuable Rider Award this year was Tony Dockendorf of Cloquet, Minnesota. Dockendorf has been a part of the event since the beginning. He has been a rider, volunteer and a role model for the riders with his innovative approach to fundraising. Congratulations to Tony on winning the award and thanks for his many years of outstanding service.

A new volunteer award was created this year. Larry Bannor was awarded the Larry Bannor Volunteer Award for 2013. Larry was one of the original four riders who created the event. He has offered to help with any aspect of the ride for the past 14 years. Larry has been working with the snowmobile clubs this past year. His focus was to build a strong relationship with the groups for this and future years. Another of his goals was to ensure trails were groomed and ready for our event. Congratulations, Larry!

We would like to thank everyone involved in the Black Woods Blizzard Tour, especially all of the volunteers and those who donated to the event. A huge thank you is extended to the Black Woods Blizzard Tour committee: Bud Baker, Jeff Erikson, Bryan Flaherty, Cullen Flaherty, Pete Gassert, Dan Hartel, Tom Jesperson, David Kolquist, Julie Thoreson, Dave Telschow and Jeff Trentman.

Sponsors for the event include: our title sponsor Black Woods Grill and Bar; presenting sponsors: Polaris Industries, Fox Sports North, KBJR 6 & Range 11, KDAL 610 AM, Phillips-UV/IceHole/Sutter Home/Red Bull, Aluma Trailers/Widdes Trailer Sales; major sponsors: Minnesota Twins, Youngstedt Companies, Duluth Lawn & Sport, Essentia Health, Lamar Outdoor Advertising; participating sponsors: AmericInn, Amsoil, Cirrus Aircraft, Coors Light/Rohlfing Distributing, Dan Fredrickson Signs, Jesperson Studio, KLN Family Brands, Pro Print, Tischler Wood; contributing sponsors: Bullyan RV, Cambria, Castle Sales, CenturyLink, Coca-Cola, Creative Threads, Fortune Bay Resort, Harbor City Oil, Hartel’s/DBJ Disposal Companies, Holiday StationStores, JWDA Inc, JNBA Financial Advisors, Kolar Toyota, London Road Rental Center, Mellin Promotions, Minnesota Coaches, MN USA, National Audio & Visual, Northland Subway, Perkins, Pike Lake Liquors, Precision Camera, Republic Bank, Stokes Media House, SYSCO, Twin Ports Paper; supporting sponsors: Byfuglien Trucking, Calumet Specialty Products Partners, CentraCare Health Systems, Country Inn & Suites, Country Inn of Two Harbors, Hoyt Lakes VFW, Manning Transfer, Meier Art & Frame, Northern Business Products and University Liquor. ATTENTION ALL WALKERS! In order to receive an official Walk to Defeat ALS T-shirt during the 2013 Walk season, walkers will be required to raise a minimum of $50 to earn a shirt.

Why the change? Unfortunately, our care services’ expenses – equipment, technology, and respite care – continue to increase. We also have people on waiting lists for certain equipment needs. By incorporating a T-shirt minimum, we are ensuring that sufficient funds are available to meet the demands of our Chapter’s programs and services. More and more ALS Association Chapters across the nation are implementing T-shirt minimums to ensure that their programs and services can thrive and continue to serve as many people as possible.

Have questions regarding the Walk to Defeat ALS? Contact your Walk coordinator! For Minnesota Walks, please contact Kristina at 888-672-0484 or [email protected]. For North Dakota and South Dakota Walks, please contact Chelsea at 888-672-0484 or [email protected].
