Newsletter of Tennis Seniors New South Wales. August 2012
H i Members!
If you have not
nominated for a team
in Perth in January
now is the time to do so or if you
have formed a team already, please
advise our Secretary. It will be 6
years at least before the Carnival
will be held there again, and Perth
has many attractions on offer.
We wish all our players
representing us in Croatia in
September good luck and
hopefully once again they will be
in the Winners’ circle.
Whilst our tournaments played in
the Coastal areas have good
attendance some of the inland
venues need more support. If you
know someone who plays tennis,
but is not a member, maybe you
could suggest trying one of the
Country tournaments to start with,
or you could partner them in some
events to get them started in
Seniors Tennis.
A change of format for the
Doubles in our State Titles this
year, (which is fast approaching),
will see all players guaranteed
plenty of Tennis. We will be
having Round Robins which will
be completed on a single
afternoon.
Don't forget to complete the survey
that is included with our
Newsletter and return it to our
Secretary.
Yours in tennis,
Mick Bruton

customs. There were all these
girls sitting in shop windows in
nighties or some flimsy garments
drinking coffee, waving and
inviting me in. What a great
country this was. I had never seen
such friendly girls before. I knew
people had coffee after dinner, but
why in a shop window wearing
only their nighties?
The porter, with the family
trotting behind had gotten well
ahead of me in the dark street,
while I looked at all these friendly
girls. I was jolted out of my
reverie by a sharp command from
my father to keep up with them
and stop lingering. I decided to
come back some other time but I
never found that street again.
After arriving in Perth in 1939 he
reminisced:
I felt that I would like this new
country. Now seventy years later I
have not changed my mind.
The Nazis had taken everything so
the family had to start again with a
chicken farm in Quakers Hill.
Again, in Dad’s words (last time):
Looking back, I must admire my
parents the way they adapted to
farm life after the comparatively
luxurious life they led in Vienna.
Suddenly they had to get used to a
toilet called a “dunny” - a can
with handles and a seat, blow flies
and red back spiders.
Dad volunteered for the army and
he always described it as the best
years of his life. I remember his tale
of how he worked as a dogman in
the army and he would hoisted be
high in the air by a crane, standing
on a the load to steady it. Just for
laughs the crane driver would swing
the load around and Dad would be
hanging on for grim life and
laughing like a fool, believing
himself immortal.
As we do.
After the army, there was more
work on the farm before he went
into the city and worked as a tailor.
Even then, he would work on the
farm on weekends. After years
Eulogy: George Korting
By his daughter Grea.
If I was to sum up the essence of
Dad’s life in three words I would say
“dedication”, “loyalty” and
“perseverance”. You can see it in the
way he handled his family’s
vagaries, his work, his tennis and his
efforts in tennis administration.
Dad was born in the Sanatorium
Hera in Vienna on the 22nd of April
1923. His family were wealthy - they
even had maids!
To describe what happened from
there I will defer to dad’s memoirs:
In March 1938 the Germans
marched into Austria. On the first
day, planes flew into Austria all
day. I believe that as soon as they
landed they took off again to make
things look even worse, and after
them came a never-ending stream
of tanks and soldiers. It was a
foregone conclusion, particularly
when a great many Austrians
favoured the takeover.
During the next few weeks they
started coming out in their black
and brown uniforms, jackboots.
Swastikas, armbands, guns,
greeted each other with Heil Hitler
and sang the Horst Wessel song.
Horst Wessel was a young German
who joined the brown shirts in the
early days. One of his poems was
turned into this song. He had
married a prostitute but her former
pimp got jealous and shot Horst
Wessel dead in an argument on
14 January 1930.
Quite a role model …
After the big takeover in 1938
Herman Goring came to Vienna
and held a prophetic speech in
which he said that Viennese
comfort was over and now it
would be guns before butter. By
the look of him he must have kept
a fair bit of butter for himself. In
fact it struck me that many of
these new Nazi leaders, who
advocated tall, blond, athletic
and heroic looks for everybody
else looked themselves more like
the people they despised.
Many years after the war I
looked up a chap I played
football with as a boy. He said to
me, “You know, when it first
happened we thought life was
going to be wonderful.
Everybody will have a
Volkswagen and we will all be
happy. The good time did not
last very long and by the time I
ended up in a prisoner of war
camp with a bullet in my hip, we
had changed our minds. I even
considered myself lucky that I
was in Moscow and not sent to
Siberia.
The escape for his family through
various European countries was
frightening, although it didn’t
appear to dampen his spirits – and
this quote from his memoir gives
us a good insight into his
character:
At the railway station in
Amsterdam a porter with a
trolley picked us up. I think he
was a Quaker. He told us that he
had been blind and some
religious miracle restored his
sight. With our luggage on his
trolley, the family followed as he
walked us to a hotel. It can’t
have been a five star or any star
hotel, since we passed through
the red light district of
Amsterdam to get there.
I was most pleasantly surprised
at what I thought were Dutch
Vale, George and Rest in Peace!
2
of toil, saving and scrimping the
family started up a successful milk
bar in Milsons Point, which they ran
for many years.
He met my mother, Thelma
Forshaw, at Packies, a dance venue
for bohemian artists and foreigners -
since bohemian artist women were
the only ones who would accept
foreigners at the time.
They had a stormy marriage,
although I did sometimes see them
laugh together. Nothing is black and
white. They also had a common
interest in us children. Sadly, my
older sister Helene passed away in
January after a two-year battle with
cancer.
Dad retired from the shop in his
early 50s and played tennis almost
continuously. He acted as board
member and president of the
ANZAC Tennis club and was given
a memorial plaque “in appreciation
for outstanding service as
President.”
He then founded Sydney Veterans’
Tennis Club, which he ran run as a
“benign dictatorship” for over 20
years, later on with me as his web
mistress.
The club was well attended, boasted
some excellent tennis talent, and was
well run, profitable and harmonious.
His efforts were recognised in 2002
when he received an Honourable
Mention for the Lane Cove
Citizenship Award.
Tennis took him to veterans
tournaments in Japan and Europe.
During this time he met Unity
Brodsky and after Mum passed away
they were inseparable. They shared
many happy years together before
Unity declined and spent the last two
years in a nursing home, which Dad
visited every day until she passed
away.
Unity’s death hit dad hard and the
double blow when my sister Helene
left us ensured that he never
recovered from the loss. He was too
frail at that time.
However, Dad led a rich and
complete life, with many ups and
downs, and today is a celebration of
what I consider a full life, well lived.
We love and miss you, Dad.

“I think the ITF are doing their best to destroy the game (instead of trying to grow the game and
make it more popular). Doubles tennis is in my opinion the most entertaining form of the game.
In seniors tennis it is undoubtedly the most popular form of the game.
The ITF have effectively killed interest in doubles play in open tennis by their changing the
doubles from 3 or 5 set knockout. Simply to get a winner without all the drama of playing a full
match (knockout).
Now they are wanting to change traditional tennis that we all grew up with, to ROUND ROBIN
(non tennis)! The pleasure of winning is taken away when you can lose to someone even when
you have beaten them when you played against them in the rounds. (I stopped playing doubles
when round robins came in.)
Singles: Now they propose that players should buy their place in world tennis and have two
levels i.e. those who buy their place and those who can't afford and don't play tennis for their
personal ego. (It has to be said here that almost no Australian teams of any age has ever
contained the best players at the time mainly because the cost of participation has to be
considered before making yourself available.)
So year after year the "well off" nominate and often get selected because they choose to spend
whatever it takes to have the trip and be part of "the official Australian team". Not because they
are the best but because they have the money.
Now the ITF will have a list of players in ranking order who pay for the privilege and an outside
group who in many cases would be able to beat the ranked players but can't afford to participate
or choose not to play in ranking tournaments.
Personally I play because it's fun to do so and I am still able to play. History will not change if I
win or lose. It's just enjoyable to play against good players and give your best, win or
lose. AND have a talk to your friends when you finish.” (Name supplied)

The Tri-State competition has been an ongoing friendly rivalry
between the three states – SA, VIC and NSW. Prior to 1990, there were several
venues in Victoria, and when it was switched to Mildura, each state would take the
role of running it, once in three years.
The current format is 16 Men and 16 Women from each state (plus reserves),
selected from those who nominate or who are asked to fill the team if they are in
Mildura at the time. It has been the intention of the state seniors’ committees to
offer 4 more places to those men and women over 65/70 who are present, to
participate in the competition as well. Players all wear their state uniform, as it is a
representative match for their state.
All players must be registered members of their State Association.
For several years, the Dinner Dance on the Wednesday night has been on the
Paddle vessel, “The Mundoo” which was purpose-built for functions catering for
large groups. It is licenced and air-conditioned, and offers a most enjoyable
evening, as there is music and dancing for those with energy. (It is the host state
which selects the venue). Please consider nominating to play in this as well as the
three-day tournament – it’s one of the BEST weeks on the Calendar! It is in
Melbourne Cup week.
Contact Robyn Castle if you need a Team Shirt, on 9624 7075, as uniform is
required. Teams are selected on strength, not in age groups, from all NSW players
available. Round Robins are arranged for non-team players. Please nominate for a
place in the team by completing the form included with this newsletter or by
emailing [email protected]
This is essential if the competition is to continue in 2012!

M y involvement with Tennis Seniors NSW dates back to 1989, when I found my life needed to take a different
direction following the loss of my husband Bill, after a long illness. At the time Veteran’s Tennis, as it was then known, was based at my Club, Marrickville Lawn, on a trial basis, and I had been encouraged to join. At the ensuing AGM I reluctantly accepted a nomination for a Committee position, as I felt it was too soon, and was also working full time, but realised it would also make it easier to meet people. In addition, I was on the Committee at Marrickville Lawn, and was the Ladies Delegate to the Metropolitan Grass Courts Competition for that club, where I have been a member for 30 years. In recent years, I have also co-ordinated social days there for Tennis Seniors. However, it was from that point that I started to attend Country tournaments, my first being the Coach trip to Mildura, where I met many players of all standards. Two in particular, Margaret and Lyn Wayte, certainly way out of my league on the court, took me under their wing and made sure I was included during that trip, and other tournaments on the calendar, and we remain good friends today. It has made me realise even more that tennis is a sport for life, no matter what your standard, and in Seniors Tennis we have the opportunity to bring all standards together in lasting friendships, both on and off the court. I hope my continuing involvement has helped in some way to get this message across, particularly to encourage new members. Over the years I have put myself forward for various assignments, the first being the afore-mentioned Mildura coach trip, after it faltered in 1991, and had to be cancelled. It’s possibly the hardest one of all to co-ordinate, but has developed over the years, and once we arrive and see the beautiful grass courts, the Murray River, and surroundings of that City it makes it all worthwhile. Then, in 1996, after realising we needed to settle on a quality Tracksuit and not keep changing designs, I was instrumental in the initial purchase and sales and distribution of our Tracksuits from Kea Australia, resulting in sales of over 200. I was relieved when Julie Pratt offered to take over the continuing sales, during her time on committee. Finally, as Social Convenor, I started organising the Annual dinner dance, which used to be held around Xmas, and the Teams dinner in Mildura. When I really think
about it, taking on so
much and working full time, I must have had rocks in my head!!! However, being so involved whilst working full time probably made it a bit easier for me to adjust when my son, Glenn decided it was time to move out, and spread his wings, literally, as he had completed his HSC and a 4-year apprenticeship with Qantas, and was now a qualified Aircraft Engineer. I had been 20 years with Ansett Airlines, so my background involved the airline industry, and am naturally very proud of his achievements in this field. He is currently a Licensed Engineer based in Singapore with his wife Coralie and sons Nathan 10 and Luc 7. In one way I was devastated at the news of their move overseas, missing out on close contact with my grandsons, however, I always realised he could finish up anywhere, and Singapore is not too far. On the upside, I have managed a few opportunities to visit them, and I always see them on their brief visits back here. In 1994, after finishing with Ansett Airlines (thankfully before they went under), where I was P.A. to the State Manager of Ansett Air Freight, I was lucky to secure a position with the NSW Fire Brigades. Ironically, this was as a result of my involvement with the Tennis Seniors Mildura Trip, when Dr John Pearce, one of our members, approached me at Mildura. He was on the trip with his wife Miriam, and had been the Occupational Physician for 20 years, providing medical/health services under contract to the Fire Brigades. He offered me a position when he heard I had left Ansett, which resulted in my remaining with the Fire Brigades for 14 years following his retirement. I consider myself very lucky to have worked with two wonderful major organisations. Particularly being able to experience overseas travel, which we always considered was a privilege, and not on our horizon until then. I never took it for granted, but am convinced it set Glenn’s career path in motion while still at school. My career also took me from the manual typewriter era to the computer era, which I was given the opportunity to embrace whilst the training was available. I have continued my involvement on the Seniors committee while I feel I can still contribute. Our wonderful organisation would not exist without those who have served over the years, particularly those who have taken on major roles, and it is not getting any easier. It keeps me mentally and
physically active, which we all know is important, but would also like to see more of our younger members become involved, even on sub-committees. The culmination for me last year was in the success of the 40th Anniversary Dinner, held at the magnificent Canterbury League Club. I was fortunate to persuade Glenn to accompany me, as he was in Sydney on training, and he gained an insight into my social life. For those who were able to attend, it was wonderful to welcome our original Secretary and Life Member, Len Pearson, along with our other four Life Members. Also representatives from the formation committee, and former Presidents and Secretaries. For such an important occasion, I was thankful to have the assistance of three of our well known players, Leanne Swaysland, Kerry Ballard and Robyn Rickard, as I am aware I now don’t know a lot of new members, particularly some of the younger ones, and realise the importance they will play in the future of Tennis Seniors. I just hope they enjoy their membership as much as I have and still do, and will encourage their friends to join. My rewards are in seeing people enjoy themselves, both on and off the court, and realise that I may have contributed in some small way. Yours in Tennis. Margaret Biddle

I n ancient Israel, it came to pass
that a trader by the name of
Abraham Com did take unto
himself a young wife by the name
of Dorothy.
And Dot Com was a comely
woman, broad of shoulder and long of
leg.. Indeed, she was often called
Amazon Dot Com.
And she said unto Abraham, her
husband, "Why dost thou travel so far
from town to town with thy goods when
thou canst trade without ever leaving thy

And Abraham did look at her as though
she were several saddle bags short of a

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in

hath the best price. The sale can be
made on the drums and delivery made
by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."
Abraham thought long and decided he
would let Dot have her way with the
drums. And the drums rang out and
were an immediate success. Abraham
sold all the goods he had at the top
price, without ever having to move
from his tent.
To prevent neighbouring countries from
overhearing what the drums were
saying, Dot devised a system that only 7

Krimson Lily creates designs for women who are looking for tennis wear and gym gear that is comfortable, elegant and more than just a little differen Jo Taylor’s vision for Krimson Lily was to create an environment in which customers could have significant input into what they order and then wear on court. Jo explains: “Krimson Lily designs its own limited edition prints, with new ones coming out most weeks. My husband, Lee, thinks the range looks great! But he would, wouldn’t he?! You can choose your garment, choose your print, choose your colours, then your on-court wear is individually created, limiting the chance of “seeing yourself” across the net! So if there’s a print you like but you don’t see your favourite colours, just ask me. Some comp team members have ordered “same same” but in different colours.” Krimson Lily’s clothing is made in Australia from high quality Italian sports fabric and is styled to last well, to be comfortable, functional and, of course, to look fabulous. The limited edition range is stylish, unique and affordable…….and is made for real women”. www.krimsonlily.com.au [email protected] Jo: 0410685985

H aving had the BMT or
bone marrow transplant
back in January, and no
treatment since, I feel I
am doing pretty well! The Professor
has observed from the last three
blood tests, amongst other things,
that the levels of “bad” protein are
continuing to drop. He is very
pleased with my progress. He said I
had a “excellent response” to the
transplant, and that I could expect to
have 2-3 years free from treatment,
but he won’t put that in writing!
This disease is so insidious, and
people have such different responses
to treatment, that they cannot
accurately predict the outcomes.
New drugs are continually being
tested and used in clinical trials, so
patients can be assured that
remission may be possible for many
years, depending on their response.
Only this week a new drug in the
USA was approved
for use there, and Australians could
have access to it within 6 months.
The 200 Club this year ($10 a
ticket) is being run to raise funds
for the “Multiple Myeloma
Foundation” – which supports
patients in Australia in coping with
the disease and to assist them with
ideas to overcome the many side-
effects of the drugs. I hope you will
be generous, and buy tickets! It is
possible to win $10 per day, with a
huge payout in December of $500
– great for Xmas shopping!
Please complete and return the
survey regarding “Pay for Play” by
return mail. Tennis Seniors are
expected to increase their numbers
so that there will be a sizeable
market to present to prospective
sponsors. The “game of a lifetime”
is suffering a decline, and we need
to help in any way we can. Perhaps
we should all invite our
grandchildren to play with us! And
they can then get their parents to
join!
I will be taking a trip with Arthur
to WA, from mid-August, to enjoy
the Indian Pacific train, and the
sights of the Kimberleys, Kakadu
and Darwin, so I hope you will all
consider in the meantime,
submitting an entry for the State
Championships. The Doubles will
be run in “half-day sessions” as
they have done in Queensland, so
we hope we can attract more
players. It will be played at
Pennant Hills Park, a delightful
venue, and this year, we will not
anticipate any rainy days! We’ve
got the “supersoppers” however,
just in case!
Looking
ahead to good
times!

At MY age, “gettin’ any?” means
“SLEEP”.
I’m retired. I was tired yesterday
and I’m tired again today.
Ken Taylor has been doing it tough over the past 12 months, with heart
problems! Ablation treatment caused him to have a “mini stroke” which has
affected his peripheral vision. It’s great that you can still play tennis and golf in
spite of a problem in seeing the ball!
Wendy Izzard broke her wrist in a fall at Gloucester, and needed surgery. It
didn’t stop her from turning up to the dinner at the Bowls Club, albeit LATE!
Not sure when she’s planning a return to tennis - hope it’s soon, Wendy!
Ian Fisher was not well for a few months, which made it difficult to play his
usual game of tennis. He was laid low with an infection and spent some time in
hospital, but is out running around now almost as if nothing has happened.
Mike Hook’s surgeon discovered that the “piece of glass” in his foot was actually
a melanoma! So Mike’s been in and out of the Sanitarium hospital, having
surgery. He is also recovering from a skin graft which has been pretty painful.
He says he’s sick of using crutches and sitting around watching the world go by,
so he’s thrown away the crutches and gone back to work! (Part-time). That’s
stoic!
Annette Cochrane, who has lived in Queensland for 12 months, was rushed to
Brisbane Hospital after collapsing on the court in Gympie and spent 6 weeks
having treatment for an aneurism. She worried Ernie, who thought he might lose
her! The good news is that she is out of hospital, back home in Montville, a
beautiful little place in the hills, west of Mooloolaba. We visited her when she
had just got home, and although still suffering from headaches, she was very
happy to be home. She and Ernie were eagerly awaiting a visit from Ernie’s sister
May, and her husband John Howard!
Good news for Ron Fletcher, of Newcastle - he’s received a “clean bill of
health”! It’s great to hear it, Ron.
Cheerio Corner Rest in Peace…

IMPORTANT
SURVEY
As members would be aware at the request of TA & TSA we have participated in a
Pilot Plan with the aim of arresting the declining numbers of registered Tennis
Players.
The basis of the Plan is to eliminate joining fees and yearly membership fees that
our members pay to TSNSW and in lieu of fees a levy has been placed on each
event at tournaments. This levy is paid to TSA and they in turn are to reimburse
TSNSW for our running costs. The trial is to conclude at the completion of this
calendar year and we would like all members to complete this survey and return it
to us.
It is all of our members who will ultimately decide if the plan will continue or not,
and basically the decision you have to make is would you prefer nil joining and nil
yearly fees and pay the levy as we have done this year or pay fees as has been the
case in the past. In all probability the nil fees would suit members who don't play a
lot of tournaments and those playing more regularly would prefer to pay a
membership fee as in the past. Your co-operation in returning this form is
requested.
