The Seymour Lady Wildcat Diamond Club is a
parent-run, volunteer, non-profit committee that has been
established to help support the Seymour High School
Softball Program. Efforts made and monies raised by the
Diamond Club go to provide things that would not
otherwise be covered by the school budget. These are
considered appropriate and worthwhile to help ensure the
success and well-being of the Softball Program, as well
as to help promote a positive experience for our student-
athletes and their coaches. Diamond Club efforts also
help to ensure that the team can enjoy an end-of-season
banquet with suitable awards. Fans and supporters of
Seymour Softball also benefit…primarily by enjoying the
teams winning ways, but also appreciating the teams
merchandise and concession items that the Diamond
Club makes available.
Lady Wildcat Diamond Club Officers for the 2012-
2013 school year and the 2013 softball season are Maria
Nisbet, President; Kelly Crocamo, Vice President; Dina
Zygmunt, Secretary; and Jack Nisbet, Treasurer. Coaches
Ken Pereiras and Jamie Yakushewich are also very active
with the committee, as is Chris Adamo.
All contributions received, as well as all monies made
from the sale of these Booster Books, after recovering
book production costs, go directly to support the Seymour
High School Softball Program. If you would like to make
an additional donation, you may do so by contacting an
officer.
If you would like to place an ad in next years Booster Book,
please email Coach Pereiras:

This is the ninth Booster Book produced by the Seymour Lady
Wildcat Diamond Club, continuing in the original intent to serve
as a valued reference resource for friends and followers of
Seymour High Softball, as well as a significant fund-raising
effort for the team.
We wish to thank each of the sponsors who have placed an ad in
this year’s book and ask all of our friends to support those who
support our program.
2013 Lady Wildcats & Coaching Staff
Book Dedication
This book is dedicated to the Seymour Lady Wildcat
squad of 1993. On June 13, 1993, the Lady Wildcats
became the first Seymour Team to win a State Title. Head
Coach Bill Davis and his Cats won an exciting 11 inning
game beating Stonington 1-0 to capture the Class “M”
State Title.
This year we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of
this memorable game and many of the players will be
back on May 3rd when this years team takes on the
Raiders from Derby. To read more about that historical
game, check out page 71 for all the details.

Greene led off the game by hitting a double into the gap in left-center, but D’Amato
snagged Stephanie Santiago’s liner to the box and retired Ellis on a one-hopper.
In the fourth inning, Wentz led off with a single to center, but was erased trying to
steal by a strong throw from Marshall to Swanchak covering.
In the fifth D’Amato needed help from her outfielders.
Stonington’s Chris Lindeborg sent a rocker to left-center that was chased down by
Junko, who gathered in the ball that was slicing away. Levine was next. The defensive
specialist turned Rebecca Higgins’ gapper to left-center into a pop-out.
Davis said, “Karen is a super team player. She’s been with the program for four
years and was one of our captains. An excellent defensive player, she plays left field in
all our important games and always comes up with the big catch.
With one out in the eighth, the Bears Lori Blake walked, but Swanchak got a force
out on Green’s tough one-hopper and threw across the diamond to retire Santiago.
With tension mounting, Stonington’s Lindeborg hit a roller to the left side, testing
third baseman Michelle Zanchetti who threw her out by a step.
D’Amato then struck out Higgins swinging and Blake looking, which set up the
satisfying finish to a two-year run in glory.

By Bill Bloxsom
Seymour High Coach Bill Davis and his Fighting Wildcats had waited 365 days.
Another 3 innings didn’t matter, they only added luster to the shine of the CIAC Class M
state championship trophy won by the locals at Falcon Field in Meriden on
Saturday afternoon.
Not surprisingly it was Heather Sampieri and Michelle Swanchak, the linchpin
between past frustration and current glory, that built the winning run in Seymour’s taunt 1-0
extra inning victory over Stonington.
Sampieri and Swanchak are the only starters who returned this year, and classmate and
fellow captain Karen Levine stepped in to add defensive balance in the outfield.
But in the end it was Jen Olewnik who was happy to get one more chance to make a
difference. The Sophomore had driven in 37 runs during the regular season when the
top-ranked Wildcats took their second straight Housatonic League Championship. Nothing
would equal the opportunity facing her in the bottom of the 10th.
With Sampieri on second after a bunt single and a Swanchak sacrifice, Olewnik worked
the count even before taking Heidi Wentz’ pitch and slapping it through the hole into left
field.
Sampieri crossed the third base bag as the ball went through the infield and slid across
the plate to give Seymour its first softball crown.
Davis said “the team used last years experience to fuel the fire this season. We wanted to
make the plays defensively and keep the pressure on.”
“Jen D’Amato pitched an outstanding game to give us the chance to get the run we needed.
It was a team effort. Heather gave us the spark, Michelle came through to mover her over
and Jen Olewnik provided us with the game winner. It’s a great
ending to a fine season.”
After surrendering a leadoff double to the Bears Leslie Greene, D’Amato didn’t
allow a base-runner past first for the next 8 innings.
The freshman sensation overcame the draining heat and escalating pitch count to keep
Stonington off the board and lower her earned run average to a miniscule 0.47 (7 runs in 20
games).
D’Amato was backed by perfect defense. She struck out four and walked two in
throwing a five-hitter. D’Amato helped herself by fielding her position flawlessly,
accounting for 10 outs in all.
For Olewnik, getting punched out on strikes in the eighth inning forged the
competitive fires leading to the game-winning hit.
For three straight innings Seymour got the leadoff batter on base but failed to
execute the bunt that would move the runner into scoring position.
Sampieri who reached base four times, worked out her second walk, the only 2
issued by the Stonington right hander, in the eighth inning.
Swanchak fouled off 2 bunt attempts before chopping a single over the pitchers mound
to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Olewnik misbunted twice before striking out. Wentz then put Brandi Marshall in the
book on strikes and enticed Leslie Junko to bounce out to the right side.
In the ninth, the visitors challenged. Swanchak dove to her right to snare Suzanne Ellis’
liner for the first out and Sampieri easily handled Wentz’ bouncer.
Jackie Kupka then hit the ball over Junko’s head to the base of the fence in
straightaway center for a two-bagger. The dangerous Jen Flaherty then sliced a drive to
short, and Swanchak came up with it cleanly for the third out. 11

1993 will go down as one of the most successful years of
athletics in Seymour High School history. It started with
the 1993 Lady Wildcat basketball team winning a State
Title with an overtime 43-40 win over Morgan. Jess
Holly led the way for the Cats, while Softball players
Michelle Swanchak, Heather Sampieri, Leslie Junko,
Michele Zanchetti, Shannon Duffy, Rachel Cuttler,
Brandie Marshall and Jen D’Amato were all big con-
tributors for Coach Joe Frager. It was the first ever State
Title in Girls Basketball at Seymour High School.
These Basketball Stars then laced on the cleats for a
Spring season with Head Coach Bill Davis where the
Cats would be starting a Freshman Pitcher, Jen
D’Amato. After winning a Housatonic League Title
with a 19-1 record, the cats moved into the States and
won 4 in a row to bring home a Class “M” State Title
and #2 for the 1993 school year. It would be the first
girls softball State Title in school history.
It would be Fall of 1993 when the Football Wildcats
under Head Coach Paul Sponheimer completed the
trifecta with a big win. The Cats brought all their
offensive weapons with a convincing 41-6 win over
Bloomfield to make it 3 State Titles in a row for 1993.
