Klaus Mueller President, Cycling Australia
On behalf of Cycling Australia, I extend a very warm welcome to athletes, officials and cycling supporters from around Australia to the 2013 Cycling Australia Masters Track National Championships.
It is pleasing to see such a quality field of entries and acknowledge the many outstanding athletes taking part.
Our genuine appreciation is extended to Cycling WA and the Cycling Australia Masters Commission for their support and organisation. Our thanks also to the officials, supporters and volunteer workforce from the cycling fraternity. We appreciate the many hours of hard work that make this Championship the blue ribbon event that it is.
I would like to acknowledge the Australian Sports Commission, Cycling Australia’s principal partner and other sponsor for their ongoing contribution to the success of our sport here and abroad.
Finally to the athletes, I wish you a safe and enjoyable competition and hope your personal goals are realised and that you thoroughly enjoy competing.
Good luck and best wishes to you all.
A MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Simon Proud President, Cycling WA
A warm welcome to Western Australia
to the competitors and family and
friends here for the 2013 Cycling
Australia Masters Track National
Championships.
Cycling WA is very proud to be hosting
this event and acknowledge the
wonderful work by the many
volunteers to prepare for and conduct
this event.
This week in April sees Perth boasting a
festival of cycling with the Woodside
Tour de Perth, the first event in the
2013 NRS, and the UWCT Perth running
alongside these Masters Track
Championships.
And Western Australia offers many
opportunities away from the bike to
“Experience the Extraordinary” such as
the wine and gourmet delights of the
famous Swan Valley, right on the
Midland SpeedDome's doorstep.
So best of luck on the boards at the
SpeedDome and enjoy your stay in WA.

SPRINT The sprint is one of the oldest cycling events
making its first appearance at World
Championships in Chicago in 1893. It is a classic
short distance event in which two or more riders
cover three laps. Only the final 200m is timed
and the winner is the first across the line.
Sprinters must be strong and fast but the key to
success is tactics. Sudden and dramatic changes
in pace, standstill attempts and feints are typical
ways to try and outwit an opponent. Riders
obtain a seeding through the qualifying 200-
metre flying time trial and from then on race
head to head.
INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL
The time trial is a race against the clock with no
room for error. The difference between gold
and silver can be as little as a thousandth of a
second. The bike is locked in a starting gate and
riders must time their first pedal stroke to
match the gate release. From the standing start
they must quickly get up to maximum speed and
maintain it for the distance.
INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT
The individual pursuit is an endurance event and
is conducted as a knock out tournament. The
goal is to ride the fastest time over the
distance. The fastest two riders in the qualifying
round race in the gold medal final and the next
two fastest contest the bronze medal final. In
qualifying all riders complete the distance to
post a time but in the finals if a rider overtakes
their opponent they are declared the winner.
SCRATCH RACE The scratch race begins with a massed start and
the first rider across the line wins. Tactics are
important in this event, with endurance riders
keeping the pace fast and furious from the gun
in an effort to eliminate the specialist sprinters,
who in turn will try and shelter
within the group to conserve their strength in
the final placings.
POINTS RACE
This is an event where the final placings are
determined according to accumulated points
won by riders. Points (5 3 2 1) are awarded to
the first four across the line in the intermediate
sprints, every ten laps and at the finish. 20
points are given to a rider who laps the main
field and any rider who drops a lap on the main
field loses 20 points. At the end of the race if
two or more riders are equal on points the
places in the final sprint determine who
wins. Speed, endurance, concentration and
ability to read the race and react quickly are all
found in a successful points rider. In the event of
less than 10 starters, Points Races will revert to
a Scratch Race.
TEAM SPRINT Two teams of three riders (two riders for
women) race each other and the clock. The lead
rider on each team must get out of the gate
cleanly and bring the team up to speed as fast as
possible. After one lap it’s the turn of the next
rider to put in the effort and for the final lap
only one rider remains.

TO EVENTS

3.30 MEDALS AND TROPHIES
3.30.01 When only one competitor has entered a timed event the following criteria shall apply for
such competitor to receive a medal, taking into account the Australian Record or Best Time for the
applicable age category and event.
The Gold Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time within 105% of the best time.
The Silver Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time within 107% of the best time.
The Bronze Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time within 110% of the best time.
3.30.02 When only two competitors have entered an event the above criteria will apply to receive a
medal however two medals of the same colour shall not be awarded. If both competitors qualify for
the same colour medal the fastest competitor shall receive the highest award and the slower
competitor shall receive the lower award.
3.65 AUSTRALIAN MASTERS ROAD & TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
3.65.03.1. When a small number of competitors have entered for a championship event rule
number 3.30 shall apply for the awarding of medallions.
2. For all scratch races there shall be a minimum of 6 starters. If less than 6 starters arrive at the start
line then the competitors concerned shall compete in a younger age category event.
3. For all points races there shall be a minimum of 10 starters. If less than 10 starters arrive at the
start line then that event shall revert to a scratch race and the above rule shall also apply.
4. If it is necessary to combine categories due to the lack of sufficient numbers as described for the
events above, separate medallions will still be allocated to each category in accordance with rule
3.30
With the proviso that the riders complete the distance/race and are not withdrawn as per the
regulations that apply for each event (eg - points race) and then the medals will then be awarded as
follows:
a) For timed events as per regulation 3.30.01
b) For all other events:
The Gold Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time that is no more than +5% the bunch time for the combined event or best time for next lower category at the same event.
The Silver Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time that is no more than +7.5% the bunch time for the combined event or best time for next lower category at the same event.
The Bronze Medallion will be awarded when the competitor has ridden a time that is no more than +10% the bunch time for the combined event or best time for next lower category at the same event.
