3. Advance! The fields are ripe for harvest; the needs are greater than ever; the opportunities for ministry in military communities around the world are simply incredible, and so we intend to pioneer, grow, and expand minis-tries worldwide.

Cadence has four divisions of ministry—Adult (p. 6-8), Youth and Children (p. 10-11), Foreign Armed Forces (p. 9), and Cadence Associates (p. 12). God is working in all four of these ministries, and we are prayerfully asking Him to grow each of them in this coming year with a special emphasis on Cadence Student Ministries and Cadence Associates.

The stories in this annual report are intended to give you a glimpse into some of the work Jesus has done through our staff this past year. They are just a peek, intended to encourage you and thank those of you who have invested in this Kingdom work.

When everything is stripped down to its core—to the heart of who we are and what we do in Cadence, it’s as simple and powerful as our late-missionary’s grandson declared—

We give them Jesus!

David Schroeder President

I still remember his words.

Spoken through tears of grief and love, the grandson of one of our long-term Cadence missionaries shared his heart at his grandpa’s memorial service. “Our grandpa didn’t leave us much in way of material possessions, but he passed on the most important thing in life—my grandpa gave me Jesus!”

Well said young man, well said.

For nearly 60 years the mission of Cadence International has been to “share the gospel and our lives with the military community.” We do this in order to realize the vision of “seeing Christ exalted in the nations through the trans-formed lives of military people.”

We live and share Jesus so He can transform military lives and families. They in turn live and share Jesus in their families, communities, work places, churches, cultures, and in other nations. Jesus is exalted in each of these places, and His light and love advance powerfully into the darkness.

You see, that young grandson got it right—it’s about giving them Jesus.

Yes, Cadence does have a strategic plan. We believe in giving Jesus in the most intentional, strategic, aligned, and effective way possible, and so we labor diligently to make this happen. In fact, in the next few years we have these three strategic priorities:

1. Accelerate! The pace of this Great Commission ministry is perhaps most affected by the quality and skill of our people in strategic places and posi-tions, and so we intend to identify, develop, and deploy leaders.

2. Arm! The ministry is done by people, with people, for people, and through people. It doesn’t get done without healthy, vibrant, and competent staff and volunteers, and so we intend to resource, strengthen, and sharpen field staff and ministries.

Ministry Overview

With a vision of “exalting Christ in the nations through the lives of transformed military people,” Cadence International has served mili-tary communities around the world for nearly six decades. Offering hospitality, discipleship, and activities, Cadence staff aim to gather, grow, and then send those around them strengthened in the hope of Jesus Christ. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.

war are part of their recent history, and God has allowed us to lead several conferences pertaining to trauma healing, ethics, and pastoral leadership. We have also led two mission trips with U.S. soldiers and their families to share tangible gifts of God’s love through a vision clinic, giving away clothes, and feeding the hungry. All this work occurs through local churches and ministries so that the relationships continue to help people walk closer with Jesus.

RetreatRetreat centers exist to provide military individuals and their families with a time of rest, good food, and Bible teaching. Above all, it is a respite from their daily duties and training. Retreats offer them a chance to make a phone call home, participate in recre-ational activities, or catch up on missed sleep. Participants also

take part in a series of classes where they hear the Good News, receive spiritual direction, and gain a network for discipleship.

This past January I was struggling with allergies and my voice was

hoarse. During our retreat, I lost my place in the lesson I was teaching and felt that I had done a horrible job. I thought, “I don’t know how anyone understood anything I just said.” As we broke into small groups, Melissa asked if she could be in my group because she really under-stood me! I chuckled on the inside. She said she felt far from God and asked many earnest questions. Towards the end of our conversation she exclaimed, “I did not know that Christ died for our sins; how come no one ever told me?” The next morning Melissa shared at break-fast with everyone that she was a believer! I am grateful that the Holy Spirit’s work is not dependent on the quality of my delivery. ~Cathy

Hospitality HouseServicemen and women find an open door, a home-cooked meal, and people who listen, encourage, and point them to Christ. Through leadership training, discipleship, and acts of service in the commu-nity—and throughout the world—adult ministries staff equip and engage military people to exalt Christ in the nations.

Through our hospitality houses, we continue to meet the needs of

military men and women. One parent recently shared this impact. “We’re really grateful that [our son] Dan has found the Graf house. Of his short eleven months in the U.S. Army, his connection to spirtual matters has never been stronger than it appears to be right now. For a young man to move overseas and almost immedi-ately find a support network that is God-centered is an answer to prayer for his mom and me . . . Thank you

for your commitment and on-going support to the soldiers and most importantly for the spirtual leader-ship you’re providing.”

When we first came to England, I was 20 weeks pregnant, and

like most first-time moms, I was a little nervous about everything that would come with having a baby. Moving to a new place with different people only caused more stress and nerves. About a week after my husband and I arrived in England, we met Tim and Rebecca at the base chapel. They told us about the Wednesday night Bible study that they held at their house and we went that same week. When we came to the study, we immediately realized how many couples were there with babies. It was such a “God thing” to place us together at this time in our lives where we could all relate to the joy and chaos of children. In coming to the studies, we found a group of life-long friends who made us feel so at home. At a time when we all wished we had our families closer, the group really became family to each other. ~Alexa

In 2011, God led Cadence ministries in Germany to start serving the

National Police and Army of Burundi, Africa. Since then, God has opened doors for us to help train and equip their chaplains so that through them Christ is exalted. Genocide and civil

Cadence Foreign Ministries

Influence to Change the Nations: Cadence is ministering to foreign militaries with a vision of exalt-ing Christ in the nations through the lives of transformed mili-tary people. Facilitated through professional development, English classes, and social relief programs, foreign military and security force members are coming to know Christ.

At the start of the year, the Mine-field Village had a baptism

service—the first of its kind in this little village. We had been coming and sharing the gospel with these dear people for several years and this time we took the next step. One day after lunch we all walked the dirt road to the pond. Two at a time, the children and then the women, waded in the murky water, slipping and sliding. Cadence staff member, Sareth, spoke only in Khmer, asking each child for their declaration of faith and trust in Jesus. Their sweet little voices answered back their affirmation. Then, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, they were baptized. There was applause that I am sure was a small representation of the party going on in Heaven. Follow-up and Bible studies have continued with these women and children.

Cadence International and “3seams” joined forces this past

year to bring new opportunities to the women of Cambodian military families. “Camp 51” in Northwest Cambodia is a community jam-packed with military families who have very little opportunity for extra income. Unfortunately, many families are separated due to the need for extra income beyond what the mili-tary offers.

In the fall of 2012, Deedra (Cadence missionary) and Inga (3seams founder and director and a U.S. Army wife) put their brains together. What if we built a sewing center in the village and offered job training along with jobs to the women of the village? Could we help prevent the separation of families from happening? In May of 2013, the sewing center was finished and the training began.

Singles and WomenThe singles' ministries of Cadence strive to encourage and disciple single and unaccompanied indi-viduals who serve in the military. Women’s ministry offers women in all stages of life an opportunity for specialized Bible study, events, discipleship, and evangelism.

When Amanda joined the army, she described herself as pride-

ful and selfish. A young wife and mother, she joined for the security of what military life could offer.

During basic training, like so many others, she began attending church services to avoid cleaning duties. An injury put a glitch in her plan to complete training in a quick, four months, and Amanda found herself in the Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Program (PTRP) where she worked to recover, heal, and return to training.

It was during PTRP that she discov-ered the women’s Bible study. Asking

countless questions, she realized that her fear of death was because she didn’t know what would become of her, and she didn’t want to leave loved ones behind. Christ wooed her, and in November 2012, Amanda was baptized. She testified that she wanted God to take control of her life.

I remember coming back from major field exercises and looking

forward to visiting the hospitality house. At the hospitality house I experienced warm, home cooked meals, fellowship, and wonderful teaching. It was great! Military life was tough, but a little hospital-ity went a long way. I remember hanging out in the house after Bible study, playing pool, or talk-ing theology with one of the other soldiers. It was a home away from home, and it transformed my life for the glory of Christ. Those small conversations and times of fellow-ship chiseled away the sin and confusion bound up in my heart. Our God used this time to draw me ever so closely to His heart and His will for my life. ~Ryan, on parner-ship development with Cadence

YouthCadence Student Ministries (CSM) exists to uniquely demonstrate God’s love for students on mili-tary bases in a chapel context, under the authority of mili-tary chaplains. We believe that God has big plans for military students! Their distinctive attri-butes, their transient lifestyle, and their relational and cultural adaptability give them HUGE potential to impact the culture wherever they find themselves for Jesus.

Braydon, a student in Germany, began coming to youth group

because of a relationship he was pursuing. After experiencing pain and some ups and downs with that rela-tionship, he approached the youth worker and started asking questions. Together they were able to talk about how Jesus can fill the emptiness in Braydon’s life. As the conversations continued over the following days, Braydon decided to place his faith and trust in Jesus. After school he rushed to the youth leader’s office for a new Bible and devotional. While there have been struggles, Braydon has been transformed by the hope he now has in Christ.

Our newest youth ministry began this past year at Camp

Humphreys in Korea. Dan and Becke Haas serve there with CSM. Recently,

they were invited to visit a construc-tion site and pray over the new chapels being built. As the founda-tion was being prepared, the Korean contracter asked for the property to be dedicated to the Lord. All who were gathered there prayed and had a celebration before the construction began. Dan and Becke are excited to see how God will use CSM in this new location and for the opportunity to be a light in the midst of the antici-pated growth at Camp Humphreys.

I think that many Christians, espe-cially young Christians like me,

save their spirtual-ness for church or youth group and forget, or ignore God the rest of the time. James says that faith by itself, without action, is dead (James 2:14-26), and Jesus says to let your light shine before men (Matthew 5:16). If I keep my light under a bowl until I get my quiet time, I will only be illuminat-ing myself . . . I won’t be helping anyone come to God if I don’t show others Jesus! ~Lizzie

ChildrenCadence Children’s Ministries (CCM) exists to encourage, disciple, and minister to the chil-dren of those serving in the military.

There are 1.8 million military children who serve our nation.

Barbara Thompson, Director of Mili-tary Community and Family Policy; Children and Youth, shared with the American Forces Press Service that:

“it’s really important to recognize that military children also serve . . . [and they need to] know how proud we are as Americans that they are supporting mom or dad in uniform, who is making great sacrifices for this country.” The article went on to say, “while frequent moves and school transitions can be challenging . . . the most challenging endeavor a military child has to endure is a parental separation due to a deployment.”

Cadence continues to strive to be a place of hope for military children—easing the separation and being a safe and fun environment that shares the gospel of Jesus Christ. At this time we have two couples who are raising support to be released to minister to children, Matthew and Sarah Annanie and Kenny and Joy Lowe.

Consider joining their partnership team and help send them to minister. Contact Donor Services at 303-762-1400 or by email at [email protected].

Cadence support ministries consist of Headquarters admin-istrative staff, the Cadence Asso-ciates volunteer ministry, and Pastoral Care.

The Cadence Headquarters (HQ) team includes 15 employees and

9 missionaries who are called to advance Cadence and support our field ministries.

During this past year, the HQ sent out the Bachali family to fill-in at the Lighthouse in Yokosuka, Japan. Matthew reflected, “As hospitality house directors for the Lighthouse, my family experienced a wonderful year with the U.S. Navy and with our new friends in Japan. It was transfor-mational to all of our family. We grew in our trust in God and found out we could do more and handle more than we ever thought before. Jill, my wife,

became the “professional hugger” and was sought out by the sailors to get their weekly hug. She was a "mom" to many young sailors and even a "grammy" to many of the kids. Yes, Jill and I were usually the oldest people in the room! Eli (17) embraced the Japanese culture and made friends with many locals. Emma (15) loved the navy kids, and they loved her. Henry (14) was like a big brother to a following of young boys in the ministry. Noah (12) took care of the toddlers, and when we left several moms cried because they were going to miss his loving care over their chil-dren. We all went very deep in rela-tionships quickly, and after 12 short months, we experienced sadness in saying good-bye to a community that we loved. We love Cadence ministry and believe it must continue to pros-per and grow.” ~Matthew has served on the HQ leadership team since 2009.

Support Ministries Doctrinal Statement1. We believe in the plenary, verbal inspiration of the whole Bible and that it is the

supreme and final authority in faith and life. (II Timothy 3:16-17; I Peter 1:20-21)2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

(Deuteronomy 6:4; II Corinthians 13:14)3. We believe that Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

and that He is true God and true man. (Matthew 1:20-25; John 1:14; Romans 8:3)4. We believe that man was created in the image of God; that all men have sinned in the

transgression of Adam and subsequently in their personal experience; that they are therefore totally depraved and “the wrath of God abideth on them;” and that the only way to escape eternal condemnation is through the one gracious provision of the love of God. (Genesis 1:25-27; Romans 3:22-26)

5. We believe that salvation is the gift of God offered to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that the Son of God gave “His life as a ransom for many” and bore “our sins in His own body on the tree,” and that all who truly believe in Him are eternally saved on the ground of His shed blood. (Ephesians 2:8-9; I Peter 2:24; John 10:28-29)

6. We believe in the personal bodily resurrection of our Lord and Savior, in His ascension into heaven, and in His present mediatorial High Priestly office there at the right hand of the Father. (Acts 1:9; Luke 24:6-7; Hebrews 9:24; 7:25)

7. We believe in “that blessed hope,” the personal, bodily, imminent, and pre-millennial return of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:13; Acts 1: 9-11)

8. We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again by the Holy Spirit, and that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer to enlighten, enable, and guide him in life and service. (John 3:6-7; I Corinthians 2:12; John 14:16, 26; 16:24; Romans 8:14).

9. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting bless-edness of the saved, and the everlasting, conscious punishment of the lost. (Mark 9:43-48; Revelations 20:15, 22:3-5, 11)

10. Conclusion: We believe in doing something about it, that we should “walk worthy of the vocation” to which we have been called, and that we have been entrusted with the responsibility and privilege of preaching the Gospel to the lost of this world. (Ephesians 4:1; Titus 2:11-14; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8)

God continues to abun-dantly provide for the ministry of Cadence International.  We have continued to see increases in contribu-tions over the past several years when there has been signifi-cant economic struggle in our nation. This is all due to the faithfulness of  God through you, our partners in ministry.

Capin Crouse LLP has once again carried out a rigorous review of all our financial records. This year there were no correcting entries and no changes proposed in our management letter. This reflects our finance department’s excellent and thorough work. Cadence ended the fiscal year in a strong financial posi-tion, with a 3.2% increase in total net assets. In fiscal year 2013, we saw an increase in contributions of $193,045. This demonstrates the faithfulness of Cadence support-ers to the ministry along with God’s continued provision.

We are very thankful for the part-nership of our donors that makes it possible for Cadence missionaries to continue reaching military men, women, and children for Christ.

As a result, Christ is Exalted in the Nations. Ministry activities, such as hospitality houses, student and children’s ministries, retreats, confer-ences, and mission trips to less fortu-nate countries make up over 85% of Cadence’s total expenses.

We give glory to God who is the gracious provider of all good things. We are delightfully dependent on Him for the provision of resources and people to conduct our ongoing ministries. We joyfully acknowledge you as our faithful partners and are confident that “. . . God will meet all [your] needs according to his glori-ous riches in Christ Jesus,” Philippi-ans 4:19.

Respectfully,
