• News papers, TV, Radio are one way communication without your input.

Growing Use of Social MediaThe big 3 – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn• Facebook had 687.1 million users in June

2011

• LinkedIn had 79.2 million users in March 2011

• Twitter had 175 million in February 2011


Benefits of Social Media• A ready source of current information, being

able to share articles and viewpoints, and partnering with like-minded individuals inside and outside of their work.

California Law• The first, AB-1844, prevents employers from

asking their staff for their social media usernames or passwords (and, in another iteration, from logging into social media in their presence).

• The second, SB-1349, extends that protection to students at California's many private and public colleges and universities.

Social Media Mistake?


Fired• Connecticut teacher Jeffrey Spanierman

was fired because of two cyber conversations with students on his MySpace page. In one posting, he teased a student about his girlfriend, and the student responded, “dont be jealous cause you can’t get any lol:)” Spanierman replied: “What makes you think I want any? I'm not jealous. I just like to have fun and goof on you guys. If you don't like it. Kiss my brass! LMAO.” He also jokingly threatened another student with lifelong detention for calling him “sir.” Pretty mild stuff, really.But a federal court ruled that Spanierman’s termination didn’t violate the First Amendment because his speech “was likely to disrupt school activities.” The court faulted the teacher for failing “to maintain a professional, respectful association with students” and for communicating with students “as if he were their peer, not their teacher.” Such conduct, “could very well disrupt the learning atmosphere of a school,” the court said.


Supervisor Fired• A Cohasset Teacher, Dr. Siple, high school supervisor for math and

science posted comments she believed where only to her 50 friends about her students. She was fired over the comments.


Demoted• Tara Richardson was a mentor for beginning teachers who

sued the Central Kitsap (Washington) School District claiming that she was demoted because of comments she posted on a personal blog. She described one administrator as “ a smug know-it-all creep” who has “a reputation of crapping on secretaries..”

Last June, a federal appeals court rejected her First Amendment argument, finding that her nasty, personal comments interfered with her job because they “fatally undermined her ability to enter into confidential and trusting mentor relationships” with beginning teachers.


Suspended and Disciplined


Photo Posts• And then there’s the sad tale of Pennsylvania college

senior Stacey Snyder who was dismissed from her student teaching position because of “unprofessional” postings on her MySpace site, which she urged her students to visit. Her site included comments criticizing her supervisor and a photograph of her wearing a pirate hat and drinking from a plastic cup with the caption “drunken pirate.”

• Because she did not complete her student-teaching practicum, Snyder was forced to graduate with a degree in English instead of Education. The lack of student-teaching experience also prevented her from applying for a Pennsylvania teaching certificate.


Photo Posts• Snyder sued, but a federal court found no

First Amendment violation. Applying the Pickering case, the court ruled that her MySpace postings dealt only with purely personal matters, not issues of public concern.

• The lesson from the Snyder case is this: Unprofessional and inappropriate Internet postings by college students can be used to prevent them from entering the teaching profession. Seriously.


Job Blunders• The Washington Post published a front page “investigative” piece

entitled “When Young Teachers Go Wild on the Web,” quoting one DC teacher’s Facebook page: “Teaching in the DC Public Schools—Lesson #1: Don’t smoke crack while pregnant.” A special ed teacher wrote on her page to a student, “You’re a retard, but I love you,” and posted a photo of herself “sleeping” with a bottle of tequila.

• A San Antonio newspaper reported that college student “Mahka” posted pictures of herself in various stages of drunkenness with the catchy caption, “Can U say wasted?” She also wrote: “Drinking and partying is my life. I’m gonna be a high school English teacher one day.”


Examples• The Charlotte Observer reported that an afterschool staffer from

Charlotte was fired for his Facebook comment that he likes “chillin’ wit my niggas” and a “suggestive exchange” with a female friend. Two probationary teachers faced termination for their Facebook musings that “I’m feeling pissed because I hate my students,” and I’m “teaching in the most ghetto school in Charlotte.”

• The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch ran an expose# entitled, “Teachers’ Saucy Web Profiles Risk Jobs.” One 25-year-old female bragged on her MySpace site about being “sexy” and “an aggressive freak in bed.” Another confessed that she recently got drunk, took drugs, went skinny-dipping, and got married.


Fired Over Vacation Picture• This is the photo that got Ashley

Payne, a High School english teacher fired from her Job at Apalachee HS in Barrow County, Georgia. Nevermind the fact that she was on vacation, nevermind the fact that she didn’t friend students on her Facebook page where the photo was found, nevermind the fact that she did nothing illegal whatsoever, she was told to resign or be suspended. She chose to resign so not to have a suspension on her teaching record.


Social Media• So, how would you fare in that

situation?

• The MOM test.

• If you’re not sure, show your Facebook page to your mom. If she’s got any concerns or problems, then so do you.


How to Protect Yourself• Post Information only on a need

to know basis.

• Make your passwords foolproof.

• When it comes to posts on Facebook or Twitter, the less personal the better.

• Change your privacy settings often.

How to Protect Yourself• Don’t do it during work time unless you have permission to

do so. Better yet, don’t use it at work unless you think it will get you a raise.

• Don’t post anything that you wouldn’t feel comfortable posting or discussing in the lunchroom at work. Some people got busted for posting photographs of things that went on at parties.

• Remove comments posted by others that can get you into trouble. Edit them directly or ask whoever posted them to remove them.


How to Protect Yourself• Raise your privacy settings. Be mindful that these settings only

prevent the average user from digging out the information. Assume there is a chance that the information can still leak out.

• Do not ever admit to anything even remotely resembling a crime. Cops and prosecutors know how to use Facebook as well as anyone. You’ll have a hard time undoing such an admission, even if done as a joke. If your boss doesn’t really like you, Facebook might become a good place to turn to find dirt that can be used to get rid of you.


How to Protect Yourself• Don’t disclose personal information that you are not

comfortable having out there. Birthdates are a crucial piece of information used to identify people that might be better left out of your profile.

• Monitor your information. Google your name often, set up alerts and let people know what your expectations are for personal information. Let your close friends know where you stand so there are fewer issues. This is especially important for the photo junkies who like posting potentially embarrassing photos that may have you in one or more of them. – Use GOOGLE ALERTS

How to Protect Yourself• Be considerate of others when you are posting things. If your

friend just started a new job as a CBO, don’t start posting stuff that won’t make it past the watchdogs.

• Don’t discuss confidential stuff online. If you aren’t sure, err on the side of caution. Don’t be afraid to ask someone before going ahead and posting something.

• Be careful if you mix your personal and business online. People often make the mistake of carelessly mixing personal and business contacts. Be somewhat more conservative with your business than your personal contacts to minimize this source of potential problems.

1. What chicken you are plucking or cow you’re milking on Farmville on Facebook

2. How many you have killed on Mafia wars or where they are buried.. again on Facebook

3. Party photos showing you inebriated or a hand placed where it shouldn’t be

4. That you are having a party.. you might get more guests than you counted on

5. Photos revealing you flirting with the bosses wife at the annual work Christmas party

6. That you are having an affair

7. That you are thinking of having an affair



8. Complaints about your boss

9. That you hate your job and want to leave.. you might get your wish.. Involuntarily

10. Don’t share photos or an event that reveals that you were not sick that day at work

11. That are you are planning to take a sickie

12. Drama with your friends

13. Issues with your parents

14. Passwords.. unless you have more money than brains

15. Hints about passwords like dogs names



16. Images and videos of your children

17. Updates on Facebook after you have escaped from Jail and on the run (don’t laugh it has happened)

18. Revealing your thoughts about a court case… when on jury duty

19. Don’t link personal sites to professional business sites like LinkedIn.. don’t mix business with pleasure

20. Financial information such as how much money you do or don’t have in your bank account

21. Personal Information

22. How to get more friends or followers.. it already sounds like a scam

23. You are leaving on a holiday



24. The dates you are away on your vacation

25. Your daily schedule.. burglars have been known to use these little hints to their advantage

26. Showing you doing something stupid .. not good for personal branding

27. Your bodily functions

28. Revealing extreme views on Race, Religion or politics

29. What you had for breakfast

30. Finally, If you are not comfortable about it … don’t share it
