DePauw finished its season with a 2-8 overall record and 1-6 in its first season of North Coast Athletic Conference play, while Wabash is 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the NCAC. Wabash also extended its lead in the over-all series to 57-53-9 and took its first lead (38-37-6) in games played for the Monon Bell since 1961. The teams played a scoreless first quar-ter as the hosts were penalized eight times. DePauw did manage to move into Wabash territory on its final series of the quarter but was forced to punt. Each team punted four times before Wa-bash started its first scoring drive on its own 41. Holmes began the series with a pair of six-yard runs and two plays later Chase Belton completed a 20-yard pass play to Houston Hodges on third-and-nine. The Tigers were whistled for pass inter-ference on the next play, giving Wabash the ball on the DePauw 11. After a two-yard loss,

Wabash took the lead on Belton’s 13-yard pass to Sean Hildebrand with 6;52 left in the half. The extra point attempt glanced off the left upright. On their next series, the Little Giants crossed midfield, but three false start penal-ties and one delay of game forced Wabash to punt. After DePauw punted on its next possession, Wabash took over on its own 43 with 2:03 remaining. After Belton completed passes to Hildeb-rand and Andrew Gibson, the Little Giants entered the red zone. The drive, however, stalled and Ian MacDougall came on to boot a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds remaining to make it 9-0. After being forced to punt on their opening drive of the second half, the Tigers stopped the Little Giants on three plays, but were called for roughing the kicker which gave Wabash a first down and kept the drive alive. Wabash kept the ball on the ground for the next nine plays and extended the lead to 16-0 after Holmes scored on a 9-yard run with 6:46 left in the third. MacDougall missed a 30-yard field on Wabash’s first drive of the fourth, but DePauw quarterback Drew Seaman was picked off by Austin Hodges at the Wabash 17 two plays later. Wabash’s final score came on a Troy Mey-ers 5-yard run with 3:01 left. DePauw totaled just 142 yards of offense to Wabash’s 432 and the Little Giants gained 22 first downs to the Tigers’ 10. Seaman completed 14 of 31 passes for 103 yards, while Justin Murray was 2 of 7 for four yards. Nikko Sansone hauled in six catches for 40 yards to lead the Tigers. Holmes picked up his 169 yards on 33 carries, while Belton completed 10 of 24 for 157 yards. Hildebrand had three catches for 33 yards. against Ohio Wesleyan marked the fourth time a DePauw player reached the 200-yard plateau. Jeremiah Marks holds the school record with 211 at Colorado College in 2007, while Terry Dickey totaled 202 against An-derson in 1990. Marks also rushed for 200 against Anderson in 2006. Sansone’s 39 carries equaled the second most in DePauw history behind Marks’ 45 versus Wabash in 2007. The 39 attempts also equal the 10th most in Division III this season.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK Armani Cato topped the 100-yard rushing plateau for the second time in his DePauw career and the Tigers’ defense limited Hiram to just 200 yards including 35 on the ground on the way to a 24-13 win over the Terriers. The Tigers improved to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Hiram dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in NCAC play. After a scoreless first quarter, Hiram struck first as Nate Eaton caught a 10-yard pass from George Blake early in the second quarter to cap a 10-play, 72-yard drive. DePauw punted on its first four series, but reached paydirt with 4:52 left in the second when Barry Flynn hauled in a 25-yard scor-ing pass from Matt Hunt. The score remained tied until early in the third when Cato scored on a 2-yard run. The Tigers extended the margin to 21-7 on Cato’s 18-yard run in the fourth that wrapped up a 10-play, 80-yard possession. DePauw’s defense stopped the Terriers on the next series and a fumble on the Hiram punt gave the Tigers the ball at the Hiram 9. Eric Malm’s 21-yard field goal pushed DePauw’s lead to 24-7. Hiram’s final score came on the next drive as Blake teamed with Richard Simpson for a 46-yard score. The point-after was blocked and DePauw held a 24-13 advantage. DePauw outgained Hiram, 321-200, and held a 171-35 edge on the ground. Cato rushed for 105 yards on 19 carries, while Amen Galley followed with 52 yards in 17 tries. Hunt completed nine of 27 passes for 150 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Flynn led the way with four catches for 89 yards. Simpson paced Hiram with 32 rushing yards on 12 carries with Blake completing 13 of 24 passes for 165 yards and two touch-downs. Eaton led the way with four catches for 38 yards. Will Longthorne’s eight tackles paced DePauw, while Dennis Callicutt added six. The Tigers totaled 12 tackles for loss in-cluding nfour sacks. Longthorne and Tophel Secuskie each had 2.5 tackles for loss with Secuskie, Nick Freund, Michael McManis and Daniel Furman each recording one sack. Josh Peacock led Hiram with 18 tackles and John Davis added 15.

FROM HARDWOOD TO TURF DePauw wide receiver Barry Flynn, an all-NCAC basketball player for the Tigers who averaged 13.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in 56 career games, is playing in his 10th game in a DePauw football uniform. He was a walk-on tight end at Ball State in 2009.

GOOD ROOKIE CAMPAIGN Freshman quarterback Matt Hunt has played in all but the first game and has started each of the last six and the Tigers are 4-2 in that time. His 1,701 passing yards are the most in DePauw history by a freshman. His 141.2 efficiency rating currently ranks fourth among Division III freshmen and 62nd overall. Hunt’s 277.02 passing efficiency rating against Oberlin is the seventh high-est in Division III this year and the best by a DePauw quarterback since Spud Dick posted a 338.5 rating at Austin College in 2007.

A BOOMING CAREER Senior kicker Eric Malm ranks second in DePauw history with 23 career field goals behind Tom Downham’s 28 from 1984-87. He also is second with 94 career extra points. In his four years, he’s connected on 23-41 field goals and 94-101 extra points. Overall he ranks eighth in school history with 163 points which also is second among kickers at DePauw. Additionally, he was DePauw’s Na-tional Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete nominee this year.

A STRONGER SECOND HALF After starting the season 0-4, DePauw has rebounded to win four of its last five. Here is a statistical comparison of the two periods.

A NEW SURFACE FOR BLACKSTOCK Since 1921, when DePauw began playing at this site then known as Blackstock Field, Tigers teams have played on natural grass. This summer, AstroTurf® GameDay Grass 3D 52 Extreme was added to Blackstock Stadium making it DePauw’s first artificial surface. The field was dedicated as Nick Mourouzis Field on October 12.

ALL IN THE FAMILYDePauw defensive end Tophel Secuskie is a cousin to former DePauw standout quar-terback Spud Dick ’10. Wabash kicker Ian MacDougall is the nephew of former DePauw women’s baskteball player Allison MacDou-gall ’88.

TIGERS NOTESThe Tigers are 63-35 dating back to the be-ginning of the 2004 season and are 42-27 over the last seven seasons ... this marks the 73rd season of play at Blackstock Stadium where DePauw teams have posted a 197-136-5 record for a .590 winning percentage … Nikko Sansone has topped the 100-yard rushing plateau three times this year and is the first DePauw player to do it since Jon Ellis in 2008. The last Tigers player to accomplish the feat at least four times in a single season was Jeremiah Marks with five in 2007 … Eric Malm’s three field goals and 11 points against both Allegheny and Ohio Wesleyan were the most by a DePauw kicker since Jordan Haver-camp booted three and totaled 11 against Millsaps in 2009 … Malm’s 23 career field goals are second in school history behind Tom Downham’s 28 from 1984-87 … Barry Flynn’s 156 receiving yards against Oberlin were the most by a DePauw player since Alex Koors finished with 175 against Trine in the 2010 NCAA Division III postseason … Flynn’s 10 catches against Oberlin were the most since Koors had 10 against Trine in 2010 … Flynn’s 66 receptions already rank eighth in a DePauw season. John Stephens holds the school record with 88 in 2001 … Sansone’s 273 all-purpose yards at Ohio Wesleyan were the most by a DePauw player since Jeremiah Marks totaled 278 against Wabash in 2007 … Sansone’s 61-yard run against Ohio Wes-leyan was the longest by a DePauw player since Curtis Moore broke off a 75 yarder in 2007 at Birmingham-Southern … DePauw’s defensive effort against Allegheny of allow-ing just eight first downs allowed were the fewest permitted by DePauw’s defense since it limited Sewanee to three in 2009 … DePauw totaled 88 plays against Ohio Wesleyan and 81 versus Allegheny marking the first time since 2009 that the Tigers have had at least 80 in two consecutive games.

FIRST-TIME QUARTERBACKS With Matt Hunt scheduled to start the Monon Bell game this is the fourth straight year that DePauw will start a quarterback who hasn’t previously started a Monon Bell contest. The last DePauw quarterback to win his first Monon QB start was Ross Wiethoff in 2004 under current head coach Bill Lynch. Wiethoff played in the two previous Monon games as he came off the bench in 2003 and punted in 2002. The last DePauw QB to win his first Monon start which also was his first Monon game was Jason Lee in 2000.

HOW CLOSE? With Wabash holding a 57-53-9 series lead after 118 meetings, it stands to reason that any way it’s broken down the rivalry is one of the most evenly-matched in college football. Home field advantage seems to mean very little as Wabash leads by a slim 28-25-5 margin in games in Crawfordsville and the series is tied 26-26-3 in games played in Greencastle. Six games have been contested in Indianapolis with Wabash hold-ing a 3-2-1 lead. Overall, in the 112 games played on one of the two campuses, the home team is 54-51-8.

THROW OUT THE RECORDS? Since 1924, DePauw and Wabash have squared off in each team’s final game 86 times. The team with the better winning percentage entering the game has a 50-30-6 record for a .616 winning percentage.

TURNOVERS A BELL WIN FACTOR In the last 29 meetings, when there was a difference in the number of turnovers be-tween the two teams, the team with fewer turnovers has posted a 21-1 record. DePauw held a +1 turnover advantage in 2005, but Wabash won, 17-14.

MONON STREAKS Wabash’s current four-game win streak in the rivalry is the longest since DePauw won five straight from 1996-2000. Wabash snapped it with a 27-21 win in 2001 on the game’s final play. Wabash’s last five-game streak was in 1954 when the Litttle Giants topped the Tigers 28-0 for the team’s sixth straight win. The Little Giants are attempting to estab-lish the first five-game lead in the rivalry since Wabash led 32-2 7-7 in 1959.

Bill Lynch, a head football coach at three different NCAA levels and a collegiate coach for 32 years, returns to DePauw to lead the Tigers’ program. A 1977 Butler graduate, Lynch has most recently served as the as-sociate athletic director for develop-ment at his alma mater since March 2011. In that role he was responsible for athletics annual giving through the Bulldog Club and served as a major gift officer for athletics. He also was the sport administrator for the football program. Lynch, who led DePauw to an 8-2 mark in 2004 including a 14-7 win over Wabash in the annual Monon Bell clash, was the South-ern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in his lone season in Greencastle and was the first

football coach in SCAC history to earn the distinction in his initial season. He succeeded Nick Mourouzis who served as head coach the previous 23 seasons. The 2004 Tigers ranked 16th in NCAA Division III rushing offense after averaging 254.6 rushing yards per game. DePauw’s 2,546 rush-ing yards was just two yards shy of the school record and the Tigers’ averages of 5.0 yards per rushing play and 5.8 yards per offensive play still rank second in program history. Additionally, under Lynch’s tutelage, seven DePauw players earned all-SCAC first team honors and wide receiver JaMarcus Shephard was one of only two Division III players invited to the 2005 Hula Bowl Maui All-Star Classic In January 2005, Lynch was named the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Indiana University where he joined longtime friend and head coach Terry Hoeppner. Under Lynch’s leadership, Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis posted one of the best freshman campaigns in program history, ranking 21st in the nation in total offense and third among freshmen with 242.0 yards per game. As a team, the Hoosiers scored their most points (277) since 2001, aver-aging 335.9 yards and 222.1 passing yards per game. The interim head coach for two games during the 2006 season, Lynch was named the head coach in June 2007 just days before coach Hoeppner passed away after battling cancer. Lynch directed Indiana to a 7-6 record in 2007 and a berth to the Insight Bowl. The only head coach in Indiana history to guide his team to a bowl game in his first season, Lynch was just the fourth coach in the program’s history to lead a team to a postseason game. Furthermore, the seven victories in his debut season were the second most for a first-year Hoosiers head coach. In his four seasons in Bloomington, Lynch added a pair of “I’s” to the Old Oaken Bucket chain, defeating Purdue in 2007 and 2010. Lynch mentored three all-Americans, one Academic All-America® selection, seven first team all-Big Ten selections, 74 academic all-Big Ten honorees and a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient. Additionally, the Hoosiers produced two Ted Hendricks Award finalists as well as finalists for the Lou Groza Award, the Biletnikoff Award and the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. A four-year letter winner in both football and basketball and captain of each at Butler, Lynch earned Associated Press Little All-America honors at quarterback in 1974, 1975 and 1976 and was the first Butler student-athlete to twice earn the Indiana Collegiate Conference’s prestigious Tony Hinkle Award presented for both outstanding scholastic and athletic achievement. Lynch earned and was the Indiana Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and ICC Back of the Year all three seasons. A captain as a senior, he still holds the school record with 60 career touchdown passes and ranks third with 5,909 career passing yards. He also led the basketball team in assists in 1975-76. After graduation, Lynch spent seven seasons as a Bulldogs assis-tant coach, including stints as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. He moved on to Northern Illinois University as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 1984, and was the quarterbacks coach of the United States Football League’s Orlando Renegades in 1984. Lynch then returned to Butler in 1985 when he was named the

DePauw Head Coach Bill LynchBulldogs’ head coach. While at the then NCAA Division II program, his teams compiled a 36-12-3 record including Heartland Collegiate Conference championships in 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989. He was named the conference’s coach of the year in 1985, 1987 and 1988 and the American Football Coaches Association Region 3 Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1988. Lynch directed the Bulldogs to the Division II postseason in 1988 and into the top 20 rankings four times. Lynch then moved on to Ball State University where he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Cardinals from 1990 through 1992. He served as quarterback coach for Indiana University in 1993 and 1994 and the Hoosiers played in the 1993 Independence Bowl while compiling a 15-8 record in those two seasons. In 1995, Lynch returned to Ball State as head coach and began an eight-year stint that included a Mid-American Conference cham-pionship in 1996 and an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also directed the Cardinals to the MAC West Division co-championship in 2001. His teams were recognized by the AFCA for outstanding graduation rates in 2000, 2001 and 2002. In September of 2003 he was named the associate athletic direc-tor for community relations at Ball State and served as a liaison with University Development and the Cardinal Varsity Club among several duties. Lynch was inducted into the Butler Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and joined Mourouzis in the class of 2004 for induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. Lynch and his wife, Linda, are the parents of daughter Kelly and sons Billy, Joey and Kevin. On one Saturday each November, DePauw University and Wabash College meet on the gridiron in one of college football’s oldest and most colorful rivalries. The teams not only play for pride but also for possession of the 300-pound Monon (pronounced MOE-non) Bell; the trophy that goes to the winning team. Since 1890, the teams have battled each other 118 times with Wabash holding a 56-53-9 lead, while the series is tied 37-37-6 in the 80 games played for possession of the Monon Bell. The two schools have met each of the last 101 years dating back to 1911. Only during 1897-1899, inclusive, and in 1902 and 1910 have the two schools on the Monon Railroad Line (now CSX) failed to play one another. The three years in the 1890s during which games did not come about, the schools simply didn’t schedule each other for unknown reasons. The teams didn’t meet in 1910 due to the death of Wabash’s star halfback Ralph Wilson. Wilson died from a concussion suffered in a game against St. Louis. The actual bell, a gift of the Monon Railroad, entered the famed series in 1932. In a chapel pep session the day before the 1932 DePauw-Wabash game, the Monon Bell was presented by Russell Alexander, the DePauw publicity director, as the official DePauw-Wabash trophy for football. It was to be presented every year to the winner of the traditional battle. In case of a tie, it remained with the previous year’s winner. The idea of a trophy originated in a letter sent to Mr. Bill Fox, (then) sports editor of The Indianapolis News, from DePauw alumnus Orien Fifer of the class of 1925. The 1932 game was played on a field covered with ice and snow, the snowfall during the preceding few days being so heavy that it was necessary to clear the field with roadscrapers. The gamed ended in a scoreless tie. Since the schools are only 28 miles apart, the adversaries in the game are often brothers, cousins, high school classmates or good friends, adding to the rivalry’s intensity. The bell has been stolen at least eight times from its temporary owners, but the most famous “thefts” may have occurred in the mid-1960s. In 1965, a Wabash student appeared on the DePauw campus pos-ing as a Mexican dignitary and interested in developing an exchange program with DePauw. While meeting with the University president he asked to see the bell. After learning of its whereabouts, the student returned with friends later and stole it in what was known as “Opera-tion Frijoles.” After the Tigers won the bell back in 1966, DePauw students, hoping to keep the bell safely under wraps, stole it from their own school the week after the game and secretly buried it for 11 months in the north end zone of Blackstock Stadium. Only a handful of DePauw students knew of its location, but an unexpected problem arose prior to the big game. The ground froze that week in Greencastle, and the students were barely able to recover it in time for the Wabash team to claim it as the game ended in near darkness. The Monon Bell game is more than just a game. The week preced-ing the annual contest has included shared activities between the two schools, such as concerts, debates, an intramural all-star football game, an alumni football game the morning of the varsity contest and other events. In 1985, Jim Ibbotson, a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a 1969 DePauw graduate, arranged and recorded “The Ballad of the Monon Bell” which was written by 1968 DePauw graduate and football player Darel Lindquist. Nancy Ford Charles ’57 wrote the original music for the ballad and a video was also produced. The media have long understood the special nature of this famous small college battle. In addition to Sports Illustrated’s extensive coverage in 1973, CBS-TV’s Charles Kuralt did a feature on the game during his “Sunday Morning” show in 1979 and the Christian Science Monitor praised it in a 1981 feature. The November 13, 1987, edition of USA Today highlighted the rivalry in a feature story in its sports section and in 1988 the CBS Radio Network aired a feature on the rivalry throughout the nation. The 1998 contest was covered as a feature in the Wall Street Jour-nal and the 1999 contest was feature on Fox Sports Net’s weekly show, The Slant. The centennial game also was featured in the November 22, 1993, issue of Sports Illustrated. The game has been televised regionally on ABC-TV in 1977 and nationally on ESPN2 in 1994 and HDNet in 2003 and 2006 through 2011. The 2004 and 2005 games were the first on DirecTV.

The Monon Bell Game

The Ballad of the Monon BellLong before the cannonball travelled through her townsThe state of Indiana owned the jewel of the crownThe train, they called the Monon, the stories they still tellThe Cavemen and the Tigers playing for her bell

It rode like a masthead on engine ninety-nineCrawfordsville to Greencastle, then further down the lineThe Cavemen came from Wabash, the Tigers from DePauwSince eighteen-ninety they have played the last game ev’ry fall

Many years they played for pride, oh the stories they could tellThen in thirty-two the Monon train gave up her precious bellThey said, “Here take this symbol of smoke and fire and gritAnd give it to the winner, a symbol not to quit.”

Ring the Bell for Wabash, ring for old DePauwRing the bell for victory in the last game ev’ry fallRing the Bell for Wabash, ring for old DePauwRing the bell for victory in the last game ev’ry fall

Suddenly the boys of autumn had fire in their eyesBlood and spit, but never quit, fighting for the prizeThe medal to the victor, the symbol to the schoolWabash and DePauw became a yearly duel

Ring the Bell for Wabash, ring for old DePauwRing the bell for victory in the last game ev’ry fallRing the Bell for Wabash, ring for old DePauwRing the bell for victory in the last game ev’ry fall

Now history has recorded the players and their gamesAnd to this day they still play for the Bell in Monon’s nameThose who’ve gone before return each November daySwapping stories and the legends for those who did not play
