The Dukes went 4-11 in their fi rst two seasons in the conference (2-5 in 2008 and 2-6 in 2009).

• DU has defeated every team in the NEC under current head coach Jerry Schmitt.

• The Dukes are 1-4 when they commit three or more turnovers. They are 4-0 when committing fewer opponents than their opponent.

• Twelve freshmen have seen action this season: QB Dillon Buechel (RS), WR Chavas Rawlins, CB Sterling Parks, spec teams Xavier Nelson (RS), spec teams Anthony Alimenti (RS), LB Aaron Reed (RS), OL Larson Graham (RS), PK Austin Crimmins (RS), PR Bobby Gustine, TE Kevin Enright (RS), DL Jake Radziukinas (RS) & RB Zach DeNardo (RS). Buechel replaced Sean Patterson, who started 33 consecutive games from 2010-12 (536-955-63-6,762-28). Patterson accounted for over 95 percent of DU’s pass attempts, passing yards and touchdown passes since 2010. Buechel beat out senior Marty Mitchell - the only quarterback on the roster who had attempted a college pass entering the season - for the starting job.

• Senior Dorian Bell is spending considerable time in opposing backfi elds. The All-American LB (41 total tackles) has 5.5 tackles for loss including 2.0 sacks. He’s also tied for team-high with fi ve quarterback hurries. Bell had a team-high 3.0 TFL at Bryant.

• Sophomore LB Christian Kuntz, who is No. 2 on the team in tackles (64), leads the Dukes in TFL (15.0) and sacks (5.5). He ranks 14th nationally in tackles for loss per game at 1.5. Kuntz earned NEC co-Defensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 4 after posting 3.0 tackles for loss, defl ecting a pass that was intercepted and causing a fumble on a sack in the win over Saint Francis.

• LB Sam Martello earned NEC co-Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 2 after helping force a safety on the fi rst play from scrimmage and adding a sack and forced fumble in the third quarter of the Aug. 31 win over Albany. He followed that with 10 stops, including 3.0 tackles for loss (2.0 sacks) and a fumble recovery at Dayton. Martello ranks third on the team in tackles (63) and is tied with Christian Kuntz and Chris Johnson for the team lead with two fumbles forced.

The Montour HS product came within fi ve yards of becoming the fi rst freshman in school history to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back games when he threw for 295 yards on Sept. 7 at Dayton. He followed that with 362 yards - three shy of the DU freshman record - at Youngstown State (he had 309 against Albany in the season opener on Aug. 31). Returning fi rst team All-NEC WR Gianni Carter leads DU with 50 catches for 721 yards and 6 TDs. Carter has topped the 100-yard mark four times this season. Sophomore Dave Thomas has 43 receptions for 490 yards. A pair of WPIAL products, redshirt freshman Aaron Reed (Buechel’s former teammate at Montour) and sopho-more linebacker Christian Kuntz (Chartiers Valley) rank fi rst and second on the team with 69 and 64 tackles respectively. Kuntz’ 1.5 tackles for loss per game (15.0 on the season, including a team-high 5.5 sacks), rank 14th nationally. Sophomore linebacker

Sam Martello is close behind with 63 total tackles. Junior safety Rich Piekarski is the leading non-linebacker tackler with 60 stops. DU is averaging 102.9 yards rushing and 238.4 yards passing per game. DU opponents are averaging 134.7 yards rushing and 181.7 yards passing per game.

WISE GUYS: Sophomore LB Sam Martello (3.92 in accounting) and sophomore DL Luis Quintana (3.75 in fi nance) were both named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 Football Team earlier this month. Since 1993, a total of 31 Duquesne football players have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Football Team a total of 42 times. The Dukes have had at least one academic all-district honoree in 16 of the past 21 years.

BUECHEL ON JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LIST

Redshirt freshman QB Dillon Buechel was one of 20 players - fi ve of whom are quarterbacks - named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List on Oct. 9. The award is presented annually to the top fi rst-year player in the Foot-ball Championship Subdivision. Named for the legendary wide receiver, who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Val-ley State, the Rice Award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The Watch List can undergo revision during the season. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation Dec. 16 in Philadelphia. Buechel is the fi rst Duquesne player ever named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List.

BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH: Duquesne senior linebacker Dorian Bell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway/Ohio State) was one of 20 FCS players named to the preseason Buck Buchanan Award Watch List by the Sports Network. The Buchanan award is presented an-nually to the top defensive player in the FCS. Bell, a third-year Ohio State transfer, saw a six-game double-digit tackle streak snapped in the opener vs. Albany. Bell, who was credited with 3 tackles, recovered a key fumble in the third quarter. The recovery was followed by a 29-yard touchdown pass that gave the Dukes a 29-10 lead in what became a 35-24 win over the Great Danes. Bell added a team-high 10 tackles at Youngstown State and forced a fumble on a sack that was recovered by the Dukes and turned into 10-yard TD pass on the next play in the win at Robert Morris. He added 3.0 tackles for losses totaling seven yards in the loss at Bryant. The Buchanan Award Watch List can undergo revision during the 2013 season. Ballots will be sent to a panel of about 175 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The winner will be invited to The Sports Network FCS Awards Presenta-tion on Dec. 16.

BCS INFLUENCE: Three play-ers with BCS game experience are on the 2-deep: back-up RB Jason Douglas (Pitt prior to one year at Fullerton College), start-ing LB Dorian Bell (Ohio State) and starting S Chris Johnson (Florida) have all played in a BCS game. Back-up CB Ken Egu ran track and was on the football team at Washington, but did not see action.

AN ALL-PURPOSE THREAT: Junior WR Devin Rahming (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef/Yuba College) has emerged as a multiple threat for the Dukes with a total of 704 all-purpose yards in the past six weeks. The Miami, Fla. native, who has 321 yards receiving, 139 on punt returns, 281 on kickoff returns to go along with a six-yard run (93.4 all-purpose yds/g.), returned a punt 62 yards for a TD against Wagner to earn NEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors (Oct. 14). It was DU’s fi rst punt return for a score since 1997. Against Robert Morris, he returned a pair of free kicks following safeties 78 yards to go along with career receiving highs for catches (6) and yards (86). He also recorded his fi rst career TD catch (a 26-yarder) against the Colonials. He added 64 all purpose yards at Bryant and 65 vs. Saint Francis. He topped them all with 236 all-purpose yards in the win over CCSU. In that game he set new career highs for receptions (9) and yards (116) and added 97 yards on kickoff returns and 23 more on punt returns.

SAFETY DANCE: Duquesne, which posted a safety 12 seconds into its season-opening win over Albany, added two more safeties in a span of 7:01 of the third quarter in its 21-20 win at Robert Morris on Oct. 19. In all, the Dukes defense has scored six times this season. TURNING UP THE DEFENSE: In six NEC games, DU gave up an average of 269.7 yards per game (233 vs. Wagner, 235 at Robert Morris, 280 at Bryant , 131 vs. Saint Francis, 378 at Sacred Heart & 361 vs. CCSU). In the Oct. 12 win over Wagner, DU held the Seahawks to three plays on seven of their fi nal eight possessions. The one possession that wasn’t a three-and-out was a fi ve-play possession that was halted by a Chris Johnson interception. In the Oct. 19 win at Robert Morris, the defense recorded a pair of safeties in a 7:01 span of the third quarter. In the loss at Bryant, the defense gave up just one drive of 50 or more yards (Bryant scored two TDs directly off DU turnovers). In the win over Saint Francis, the Dukes held the nation’s leading rusher, Kyle Harbridge (173.7 ypg.) to 41 yards on 15 carries and the Red Flash to 131 total yards and seven fi rst downs. The Dukes did force three turnovers and allowed only 10 points and just two drives of 50+ yards despite giving up 378 yards at Sacred Heart. In the NEC fi nale, the Dukes held CCSU’s Rob Hollomon who entered the game averaging 128.4 ypg. to 59. DU also limited the Blue Devils to three or fewer plays on four - and picked off a pass on a fi fth - of seven second half possessions.

DUQUESNE’S WRECKING BALL: Going into Duquesne’s Nov. 2 game with Saint Francis, Duquesne fullback Ethan Dorsey (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) was better known for the punishing blocks that helped Larry McCoy become the school’s all-time leading rusher. In

fact, in his fi rst three seasons - the past two as a starter - Dorsey carried the ball exactly three times for six yards while taking great pride in helping clear the way for McCoy’s 4,549 yards. With McCoy gradu-ated, Dorsey has emerged as an offensive weapon in the past four weeks. The 257-pounder opened eyes with a 40-yard TD run late in the Oct. 11 win over Wagner. He carried seven times for 26 yards and a TD at Bryant before exploding for a hard-earned 65 yards on 20 carries

in the win over Saint Francis. He followed that with 63 yards on 16 carries at Sacred Heart and 48 more yards vs. CCSU. Dorsey, who entered the SFU game with 15 career carries, outrushed SFU’s Kyle Harbridge - the nation’s leading rusher at the time at 173.7 ypg. - by 24 yards.

CAPTAINS: Captains for the 2013 season are: senior DL Reggie Eiland (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park), senior OL Nick Redden (Clear-fi eld, Pa./Clearfi eld Area) and senior WR Gianni Carter (Eugene, Ore./Marist). A fourth captain will be named for each game.

ECLIPSING A LEGEND: Head coach Jerry Schmitt passed the legendary Elmer Layden on Duquesne’s all-time coaching victories list with the Dukes’ Oct. 5 win over West Liberty. Layden - one of Notre Dame’s famed “Four Horsemen” - coached at Duquesne for seven seasons from 1927-33. It was under Layden that the Dukes fi rst became rec-ognized as a national football power. After leading DU to a 10-1-0 record and an appear-ance in the 1934 Festival of Palms Bowl, Layden left Duquesne to take over head coaching duties at Notre Dame. Duquesne’s all-time wins leader is Greg Gattuso, who preceded Schmitt at DU. Gattuso, who led the Dukes to eight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League titles and a I-AA Mid-Major National Championship in 2003, is currently assistant head coach/defensive line coach at Maryland.

A STAFF WITH DEEP WESTERN PA. ROOTS: Every coach on the Duquesne staff either played high school football in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) or at Duquesne University. The only coach on the current staff who did not play high school ball in Western Pa. is strength coach Jeremy McCullough - who starred at RB at Duquesne. All 11 coaches played in college:

NEW FACES ON THE SIDELINE: Head coach Jerry Schmitt added three new staff members for 2013 in linebackers coach Matt Raich, running backs coach Ryan Lehmeier and outside linebackers coach Zach Richert. Raich spent the past six seasons on Ken Whisenhunt’s Arizona Cardinals staff - the last four as linebackers coach. The Monaca, Pa. native worked as a offensive assistant for the Pittsburgh Steelers before moving to Phoenix. Raich has also coached collegiately at his alma mater Westminster College, Robert Morris and Glenville State. Lehmeier comes to DU from Findlay (Ohio) where he spent the past two seasons as running backs coach. A graduate of nearby North Hills High School, Lehmeier had a standout playing career at running back for Slippery Rock. Richert, who played in 43 games for the Dukes from 2009-12, was DU’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year for 2012-13. In additional coaching moves, Michael Craig has moved from coaching linebackers to secondary and Darnel Richardson has moved from secondary to coaching DU’s receivers.

CARTER ON A ROLL: Senior preseason All-NEC pick Gianni Carter opened the season with three-straight 100-yard receiving games. It was just the fi fth time a DU player put together three consecutive 100-yard games since the Dukes moved to the FCS level in 1993. No Duke has ever recorded four consecutive 100-yard receiving games. Carter ranks second in the NEC in receptions per game (5.0) and third in receiving yards per game (72.1).

WHAT A START!: Duquesne redshirt freshman quarterback Dillon Buechel completed 21-of-28 passes for 309 yards and a pair of TDs in Duquesne’s season-opening 35-24 win over Albany. Buechel’s TD passes came in a one-minute span (27 yards to Sean Brady and 29 yards to Gianni Carter) to turn a 16-10 halftime lead into a 29-10 advantage with 10:03 left in the quarter. Buechel came up fi ve yards shy of becoming the fi rst freshman in school history to post back-to-back 300-yard passing games with 295 in week two at Dayton. Here is how Buechel’s fi rst start compares with those of other prominent DU QBs (all were season openers except Rombach, Patterson and Loya):

YOUTH IS SERVED: The Dukes entered the season with just 13 seniors and 16 returning juniors. Of the 92 players on the roster the class breakdown is as follows: seniors (13) (including grad students), juniors (26) (includes 11 fi rst-year transfers), sophomores (20), redshirt freshmen (16) and freshmen (17). Of the 2013 returnees, 25 started at least once last season.

DU’S SIXTH SEASON IN THE NEC: Duquesne, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League from 1994 to 2007, is in its sixth season as an associate member of the Northeast Con-ference Football League. With the move to the NEC, Duquesne offered 18 scholarships beginning in February of 2008. That number currently rests at 35. Duquesne granted only need-based fi nancial aid for football playing student-athletes as a member of the MAAC. The NEC competed as a non-scholarship member of the FCS until 2006 when the conference adopted an athletics-based aid model. This is the fourth season the NEC regular season champion will be an automatic qualifi er for the NCAA Division I Football Championship. Duquesne started its program in 1902 and competed at the highest level - winning a pair of New Year’s Day Bowl games (1934 Festival of Palms and 1937 Orange) - before disband-ing following the 1950 season. DU returned at the Club level prior to the 1969 season and won a National Club Championship in 1973. The Dukes competed at the NCAA Division III level from 1979-92 before moving up to the non-scholarship Football Championship Subdivision in 1993. The NEC Football League, which was established in 1996, includes full-time conference members Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Robert Mor-ris, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Wagner along with associate member Duquesne.

IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: Duquesne is 21-17 in non-conference games under ninth-year head coach Jerry Schmitt with wins over Robert Morris (three times prior to joining the NEC), Dayton (three times), Bucknell (twice), Fordham (twice) and Albany (once as a CAA member). At home, the Dukes are 14-2 in non-league play, while on the road Schmitt’s Dukes have fashioned a 7-15 mark. DU snapped a seven-game skid in non-conference road games with a 22-13 win at Dayton on Sept. 3, 2011. The win snapped Dayton’s FCS-best win streak at 10. DU is 8-5 in non-conference games over the past four seasons (2-2 this year).

A PRIME TIME PLAYSenior receiver Sean Brady’s leaping, one-handed, 27-yard TD catch in the third quarter of the opener vs. Albany was No. 3 on ESPN’s Col-lege Football Plays of the Week on Sept. 2. You can see the catch on DU’s YouTube page by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP70eu_X2Uk. The play had over 26,000 views in its fi rst week. Brady had 8 catches for 109 yards in DU’s fi rst two games before suffering a wrist injury. He is sidelined indefi nitely.

PAST TWO MEETINGS WITH MONMOUTH2011DUQUESNE 16, MONMOUTH 0Oct. 29, Kessler Field, West Long Branch, N.J.Records: Duquesne (7-2, 5-1), Monmouth (4-4, 3-2)heavy rain, 35 mph winds - 41 degrees

Quarterback Sean Patterson ran for a touchdown and threw for another as Duquesne battled heavy rain, snow fl urries and driving winds to post a 16-0 win at Mon-mouth. With the victory, the Dukes moved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast Conference. Monmouth, which was shut out for the fi rst time since 2004, fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEC. Larry McCoy rushed for 110 yards on a career high 35 carries for the Dukes, who outgained Monmouth 227-175. Patterson attempted just 15 passes as the weather challenged both offenses. He completed six for 68 yards and added 35 more yards on the ground. Isaac Spragg was the game’s top receiver with three catches for 42 yards. Duquesne scored on its second possession when Patterson capped a 72 yard drive with a 19 yard scamper. Charlie Leventry’s PAT attempt was blocked as the 6-0 lead held entering the second quarter. McCoy keyed the scoring drive with six carries for 30 yards. Safety Serge Kona, who forced three of Monmouth’s fi ve fumbles, set up DU’s next score when he jarred the ball loose at the MU 37. Patterson led the Dukes 21 yards on eight plays to set up a 33-yard Leventry fi eld goal to make it 9-0 with 2:04 left in the half. Kona forced another fumble - this one on the Monmouth 13 - on the Hawks’ next possession. Two plays later, Patterson found Spragg for an 18-yard touchdown strike to end the day’s scoring. The Duquesne defense, which held Monmouth zero yards on eight plays in the third quarter, limited the Hawks to just 51 passing yards. It also forced four of Monmouth’s fi ve fumbles, three of which the Dukes recovered. Jared Williams picked off a pass at the MU one with a minute left to seal the shutout. Khiry Carter had nine tackles (seven solo) as did Horvin Latimer (three solo). Kona added six stops including a team-high 1.5 tackles for loss.

Larry McCoy became Duquesne’s all-time rushing leader, but it wasn’t enough as Monmouth ended Duquesne’s 10 game home winning streak with a 28-27 victory on Rooney Field. Julian Hayes ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns to help the Hawks (4-4, 3-2) end a three-game losing streak. The loss dropped the Dukes (5-3, 3-2) two full games behind Northeast Conference leading Albany (7-1, 5-0). McCoy, who passed Donte Small (4,260 yards from 1998-01) on a 22 yard run in the fourth quarter, fi nished with 116 yards on 29 carries. Sean Patterson connected on 22 of a career-high 43 attempts for three touchdowns for the Dukes. Sean Brady had seven catches for a career-high 110 yards for DU. Kyle Frazier threw for 141 yards and one score for Monmouth. Duquesne, which outgained the Hawks 389-313, scored touchdowns on three of fi ve red zone possessions, settling for fi eld goals on two. The Hawks turned all four of their red zone possessions into TDs. Monmouth took advantage of a fumbled DU punt to drive 31 yards for the game’s fi rst score - a 2 yard Kwabena Asante run. The Hawks drove 93 yards in 18 plays to take a 14-0 led on a 10 yard run by Hayes on the fi rst play of the second quarter. Monmouth controlled the line of scrimmage, running 26 plays to seven for Duquesne in outgaining the Dukes 127-17 in the opening 15 minutes. Duquesne got on the board when Patterson found Dave Thomas with an 8 yard touchdown pass to cap a 75 yard drive. The Hawks answered with another long drive that ended with an 8 yard pass from Frazier to Neal Sterling. Hayes, who carried eight times for 46 yards on the 12 play drive, went over the 100 yard mark on the series. Monmouth, behind 108 yards from Hayes, outgained the Dukes 217-155 in the fi rst half. The second half was a different story as DU pulled within seven when Patterson found Gianni Carter with a 15 yard touchdown pass on the Dukes’ fi rst possesion. Charlie Leventry capped a 48 yard drive with a 29 yard fi eld goal that made it 21-17 as the Dukes held the Hawks to eight yards on 12 plays in the third quarter. Monmouth fumbled a punt snap, giving the Dukes the ball at the MU 17 with just over 13 minutes left. Patterson hit Brady, who had six catches for 79 yards in the second half, with a 6 yard strike to give the Dukes their fi rst lead at 24-21. The Hawks came right back to go up 28-24 on a 2 yard Hayes run. McCoy, who briefl y passed Small before being thrown for a loss late in the third quarter, broke Small’s record for good on a 22 yard run with 8:32 left. McCoy’s run set up a 25 yard Leventry fi eld goal to cut the lead to one. Duquesne, which took over on its 34 with 3:22 to go, moved to the MU 40 before being unable to convert on 4th-and-12 when Patterson - under heavy pres-sure - saw a pass sail over Thomas’ head. Hayes iced the game with a 23 yard run on 3rd-and-18 in the game’s fi nal minute. Dorian Bell led the DU defense with 14 tackles including 1.5 sacks. Reggie Eiland (13), Horvin Latimer (12) and Chidozie Oparanozie (10) also had double digit tackles for DU. Eiland and Latimer had one sack each. Duquesne got a pair of touchdown passes from freshman Dillon Buechel in a one-minute span of the third quarter to break open a tight game and propel the Dukes to a 35-24 season-opening win over Albany on Saturday at Rooney Field. Buechel, the fi rst freshman to start an opener for the Dukes since 2005, completed 21-of-28 passes for 309 yards, including TD passes of 27 yards to Sean Brady and 29 yards to Gianni Carter that turned a 16-10 halftime lead into a 29-10 advantage with 10:03 left in the third quarter. Eight Dukes caught a pass led by Dave Thomas who had a fi ve receptions for a career-high 107 yards and Gianni Carter who added 103 yards on six grabs. Albany’s Will Fiacchi threw for 346 yards and two scores and Kevin Chillis added nine catches for 135 yards and two TDs in a losing effort. Duquesne got on the board on the game’s fi rst play when Chillis, took a handoff under heavy pressure and was dropped in the end zone by Sam Martello and Aaron Reed for a 13-yard loss and safety that gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead. Five minutes later, DU faced 3rd-and-3 at its own 17 when Buechel found Thomas on a short crossing pattern and Thomas took it 81 yards to the Albany 2. Ryan Ho, who ran for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns, punched it in to make it 9-0 with 9:35 to go in the fi rst quarter. Albany got on the board on a Tom O’Riordan fi eld goal that made it 9-3 after one quarter. The Dukes, behind the big play from Thomas, outgained the Great Danes 124-43 in the opening 15 minutes. The game remained tied before Aaron Fleck ran for seven yards out of punt formation on 4th-and-1 midway through the second quarter. A late hit penalty on the play moved the ball to the Albany 33. Two plays later, Ho raced 25 yards for a score to make it 16-3. Albany took over on its own 33 with 1:26 left and made it 16-10 when Fiacchi found Chillis for a 35-yard score with 22 seconds left in the half. Duquesne opened the second half with a nine-play, 78-yard drive capped by a spectacular 27-yard, one-handed, leaping grab by Sean Brady to make it 23-10. On Albany’s next possession, a blitzing Martello hit Fiacchi, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Dorian Bell at the DU 29. On the next play, Buechel found a streaking Carter for his second touchdown pass in a minute. UAlbany came right back to march 75 yards, the last 35 coming on another Fiacchi-to-Chillis TD pass that made it 29-17 halfway through the third quarter. DU’s Austin Crimmins kicked his fi rst career fi eld goal - a 30-yarder - to make it 32-17 with 4:35 to go in the third. Albany cut it to 32-24 on a 2-yard Omar Osbourne run and took over at its own eight with 2:59 left. Rich Piekarski picked off Fiacchi on fourth down and Crimmins added a 22-yard fi eld goal with 1:08 remaining to close out the scoring. Piekarski added another interception in the waning moments. GAME #2DAYTON 23, DUQUESNE 20Sept. 7, Welcome Stadium, Dayton, OhioRecords: Duquesne (1-1), Dayton (1-1)partly cloudy - 81 degrees at kickoff

The third of William Will’s three second half fi eld goals was the difference as Dayton (1-1) held Duquesne (1-1) scoreless over the fi nal 30 minutes to post a 23-20 win at Welcome Stadium. The victory snapped Duquesne’s three-game series win streak. Will Bardo threw for 171 yards and ran for 79 more - including touchdown runs of 1 and 71 yards - to lead the Flyers. Duquesne’s Dillon Buechel completed 22-of-37 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort. Buechel, who threw for 309 yards in DU’s season-opening win over Albany, came up fi ve yards short in his bid to become the fi rst freshman in Duquesne history to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back games. Gianni Carter caught seven passes for a career-high 135 yards and two touch-downs, but was held to one four-yard reception in the second half. Duquesne, despite being held to 28 or fewer yards on fi ve of six second-half drives, outgained Dayton 357-313. Dayton converted three Duquesne turnovers into 14 points. Duquesne struck fi rst when Buechel connected with Carter for a 76-yard touchdown on the Dukes’ third play from scrimmage. Turnovers fi gured in the next three scores as Duquesne turned a Dayton fumble into a 26-yard Austin Crimmins fi eld goal. Just under two minutes later, a high Duquesne punt snap rolled for 23 yards before Dayton recovered it on the DU one. Three plays later, Bardo punched it in to make it 10-7 after one quarter. Dayton made the Dukes pay for another mistake when it followed a Buechel interception with a 71-yard touchdown run by Bardo on the following play to take a 14-10 lead with 9:52 left in the second quarter. A 47-yard run by Jason Douglas set up a 27-yard Crimmins fi eld goal that cut it to 14-13 with 6:16 left in the half. Dayton moved to the Duquesne 14 before Rich Piekarski covered a Flyers fumble on the DU 36. The Dukes then took it 64 yards with Buechel threading the needle to Carter from 9 yards out with 39 seconds left in the half to make it 20-14. Turnovers fi gured in four of six fi rst half scores, as the Dukes scored 10 points off a pair of UD fumbles and Dayton scored all 14 of its points following a Duquesne fumble and interception. Gary Hunter returned a Duquesne punt 20 yards to the DU 22 midway through the third quarter to set up Will’s fi rst fi eld goal, a 32-yarder that made it 20-17. Dayton then drove 41 yards to tie it on a 25-yard Will fi eld goal with just over one minute left in third quarter. The Flyers made it three scores in three straight possessions when Will con-verted again from 25 yards out to give Dayton its fi rst lead since the second quarter at 23-20 with 7:42 left. The 15 play drive took 7:18 off the clock. On Duquesne’s next possession, Dave Thomas took a pass from Buechel and gained 28 yards before being stripped of the ball by Zach Elias at the UD 19. Day-ton’s Howard Savage covered the loose ball to halt DU’s best scoring chance of the half. Christian Kuntz and Aaron Reed led the Dukes with 10 tackles each. Kuntz added a pair of sacks and also broke up a pass.

2013 DUQUESNE GAME SUMMARIESGAME #3YOUNGSTOWN STATE 59, DUQUESNE 17Sept. 21, Stambaugh Stadium, Youngstown, OhioRecords: Duquesne (1-2), Youngstown State (3-1)overcast, light rain - 65 degrees at kickoff

Martin Ruiz scored three touchdowns and Kurt Hess threw for two more to lead Youngstown State (3-1) to a 59-17 win over Duquesne (1-2) at Stambaugh Sta-dium. Dillon Buechel threw for 362 yards, three shy of Duquesne’s freshman record, and Gianni Carter (4-134-1) and Chris King (6-101-0) both went over the 100-yard mark receiving in a losing effort. The Penguins, who outgained the Dukes 501-410, scored three consecutive touchdowns - including two by Ruiz - after Duquesne cut YSU’s halftime lead to 24-14 early in the third quarter. YSU got on the board fi rst when it turned a Ryan Ho fumble into a 40-yard Joey Cejudo fi eld goal with 4:21 to go in the fi rst quarter. A big chunk of the Penguins’ 33-yard scoring drive was the result of a 15 yard roughing the quarterback penalty on the Dukes. Duquesne went three-and-out and a short punt gave Youngstown State the ball at the DU 30. Seven plays later, Torrian Pace punched it in to give YSU a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. DU, behind a 54-yard completion from Buechel to Carter, moved to the YSU 36 before a King fumble gave the Penguins the ball at their 46. The Dukes held YSU to three-and-out and stopped the Penguins on downs at the 17, but continued to lose the fi eld position battle. YSU - once again with a short fi eld - drove 37 yards on six plays to take at 17-0 lead on a 9-yard run by Ruiz with just over three minutes left in the half. The Penguins made it two touchdowns in under two minutes when Hess - run-ning the two-minute offense - hit Nate Adams with a 52-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left to make it 24-0 at the half. Duquesne’s average fi eld position for its eight fi rst half drives was its own 16. YSU, which began three drives inside the DU 40, averaged starting on its own 45. DU got on the board when Ethan Dorsey capped a second half-opening, 74-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. Buechel completed 3-of-4 passes for 57 yards including a 27-yarder to King and 21-yarder to Noel Oduho to fuel the drive. The Dukes made it two TDs in three minutes when Buechel found Carter with a 63-yard scoring pass that made it 24-14 with 9:12 left in the third quarter. Youngstown State answered with its longest drive of the game, covering 84 yards in just under fi ve minutes, to make it 31-14 on a 4-yard run by Ruiz. Ruiz added his third touchdown, this one from 5 yards out, to make it 38-14 after three quarters. The Penguins made in three TDs in three possessions when Hess hit Marcel Caver with a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 45-14 early in the fourth quarter. Austin Crimmins ended the YSU scoring run with a 30-yard fi eld goal with 10:34 left. YSU tacked on a 10-yard TD run and late 43-yard return of a Marty Mitchell interception for the game’s fi nal points.

GAME #6DUQUESNE 21, ROBERT MORRIS 20Oct. 19, Joe Walton Stadium, Moon Township, Pa.Records: Duquesne (4-2, 2-0), Robert Morris (2-4, 0-1)dreary, light rain early - 50 degrees at kickoff

Duquesne rode the momentum of a 21-point third quarter to clip Robert Morris, 21-20 at Joe Walton Stadium, marking the fi rst time since 2006 that the visiting team has won in the series. The Dukes scored twice via safety, once on a fi eld goal and two more times on Dillon Buechel touchdown passes - all in a 9:23 span of the third quarter - to erase a 7-0 halftime defi cit. The Colonials rallied to post a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, but a missed extra point with 4:43 left proved to be the difference. The win was the third in a row for the Dukes (4-2), who remained undefeated in Northeast Conference play at 2-0. The loss dropped Robert Morris to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the NEC. Buechel completed passes to eight receivers in throwing for 202 yards. Devin Rahming, who fi nished with 6 catches for 86 yards and Gianni Carter each caught a touchdown pass for the Dukes. The closest either team came to scoring in the fi rst quarter was a missed 29-yard fi eld goal by Duquesne’s Austin Crimmins. Crimmins’ miss, his fi rst after seven consecutive makes to open the season, came after an 82 yard drive. Robert Morris didn’t register its fi rst fi rst down until its fourth possession, when it drove 67 yards to the DU 17 before Aaron Reed picked off a Paul Jones pass at the 13. Reed fumbled on the return giving the Colonials the ball back on the 17. Three plays later, Jones scored from 4 yards out to make it 7-0 - a score that would hold to the half. The Dukes got on the board when Charles Lipp blocked a Tony LaMancusa punt out of the end zone on RMU’s fi rst possession of the second half to make it 7-2. Rahming returned the free kick 49 yards to the Robert Morris 33 to set up a 40 yard Crimmins fi eld goal that cut the RMU lead to two. On the Colonials’ next possession, Dorian Bell hit Jones, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Zach Zidian at the 10. DU capitalized immediately, as Buechel hit Carter with a TD strike on the next play to give the Dukes their fi rst lead at 12-7. Aaron Fleck pinned the Colonials at their own three with a 33 yard punt, mak-ing it the fourth consecutive RMU possession that started inside its own 10. On the next play, Ryan Thermil was thrown for a 1 yard loss and fumbled into the end zone. RMU recovered for Duquesne’s second safety of the quarter. The Dukes made it 21 unanswered points when Rahming took a slant pass and raced 26 yards for a score to make it 21-7. Duquesne held the Colonials to 2 yards on 12 plays in the quarter. RMU put together its fi rst drive of the half, going 71 yards to pull within seven on a 1 yard Deontae Howard run with 11:45 left. D.J. Myers picked off a Buechel pass at the Duquesne 35 and the Colonials, bolstered by an acrobatic 34 yard reception by Duane Mitchell, scored on a 1 yard Jones sneak with 4:43 left. On the game’s pivotal play, Hunter Khaleghi missed the extra point preserving Duquesne’s one-point lead. RMU forced a 3-and-out and took over on its 41 with 3:01 left, but the Dukes, who limited the Colonials to 235 yards, held when Jones overthew Mitchell down the right sideline on fourth down. The Colonials had one last crack, taking over on their 33 with 54 seconds left and moved to the 48 before turning it over on a fumbling on a hook-and-ladder play at the Duquesne 48. Keshaudas Spence ran for 181 yards and a touchdown as Sacred Heart scored twice in the fi nal 6:37 to defeat Duquesne 10-0 at Campus Field. The defeat dropped the Dukes to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast Confer-ence, while Sacred Heart, which held DU scoreless for the fi rst time since 2009, upped its record to 9-2 and 3-2 in the NEC. Duquesne held SHU to three punts and picked off a pass on the Pioneers’ fi rst four possessions of the second half before Chris Rogers broke the scoreless tie with a 31 yard fi eld goal with 6:37 left in the game. On the Pioneers’ next possession, quarterback R.J. Noel broke off a 49 yard run on 3rd-and-11 that gave SHU the ball at the DU 19. Two plays later, Spence scored from 22 yards out to seal the win. Each team turned it over twice in the fi rst half, with neither able to capital-ize. Crimmins also had a 47-yard attempt blocked on the fi nal play of the half. Sacred Heart fumbled on back-to-back possessions, but Duquesne was unable to punch it in. The Dukes drove to the SHU 8 after the second fumble, but came away empty when a Dillon Buechel pass bounced off the fi ngertips of Devin Rahming and was picked off in the end zone by Dennis Regan. Duquesne held and drove into Sacred Heart territory but turned it over again when a Buechel pass was tipped and hauled in by J.D. Roussel at the SHU 27. Sacred Heart’s best fi rst half scoring chance was a missed Rogers 38-yard fi eld goal attempt that fell short with just over two minutes left in the half. An acrobatic interception by a blitzing Christian Kuntz gave the ball to the Dukes at the SHU 41 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter, but DU couldn’t convert again as Crimmins’ 43-yard attempt sailed wide right. Buechel, who completed 15-of-45 passes for 167 yards, was picked off a third and fi nal time with 2:36 left.
