Dear Members,Wow, I can’t believe that it is already September and the High Holiday season. I wish you and your family L’Shanah Tovah, A Happy New Year. 5774, this year in the Jewish calendar, is going to be a great year here at the MJCC. I’m excited about everything that is coming in this New Year and you should be too!
The inaugural Jewish Literary and Cultural Arts Festival kicks off October 3, 2013 with the fantastic author duo, Rachelle Bergstein and Jane Weitzman. The festival continues with Israeli Artists Moshe and Goldie Monzon’s show and sale October 11-16. On October 15, join us for A Conversation with Marcia Clark moderated by Memphis’ own, Geoff Calkins. November 9-14, the Shainberg Gallery will be filled with many local artists selling their art and crafts for holiday gifts. A Night Out with Dan Zevin will take place November 9th and concluding the festival will be a panel discussion about “What is Gained and Lost in Fictionalizing the Holocaust?” with Memphis born authors, Anna Olswanger and Daniel Friedman and Rhodes Professor Stephen R. Haynes. To learn more about the festival, visit pages 14-15 and visit jccmemphis.org/culture to buy tickets to all of the events. You won’t want to miss anything!
On October 24, the Memphis JCC will welcome Ethan Bortnick, child prodigy and award-winning entertainer, who has moved audiences at home and abroad and is dedicated to combining his musical pursuits with his philanthropic endeavors. Join us for the MJCC Annual Celebration at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. All proceeds benefit MJCC scholarships, programs and services. I would like
to thank Gary & Dinah Makowsky and Jerome & Evelyn Makowsky for co-chairing this year’s event and to the rest of the Annual Celebration
committee for planning this wonderful evening. Tickets are available for $150 and sponsorships are encouraged. Visit jccmemphis.org/celebration for more information.
In August, we upgraded the Indoor Pool’s filtration system. Even though you, the member, can’t see the change, the pool filter needed an upgrade! The filter was 30 years old. This was a great upgrade
to our already wonderful pool facility. We hope you will enjoy it too.
The MJCC also has launched a mobile app where you can get MJCC at your fingertips. You can see the group fitness schedule, the pool schedule, and much more by downloading the app at jccmemphis.org/guidebook or by visiting the Apple App Store or the Android Play Store and searching for JCCs of North America. We are constantly updating the app so if there is something that you would like to see there, please send the suggestion to Anna Shabtay, Marketing Director, at [email protected].
As you can see throughout this issue of the MJCC Scene, the New Year, 5774, will bring a lot of great programming to the MJCC. I hope that you will stop by, enjoy something, and pass the information on to your friends.
L’Shanah Tovah,
Craig Weiss MJCC President

featuring Ethan BortnickThursday, October 24, 2013 at Germantown Performing Arts Centre
6:45pm Dessert and Coffee Bar
7:30pm Performance by Ethan Bortnick with Special Guest Appearance by Stax Music Academy
Twelve-year-old Ethan Bortnick has moved audiences nationally and internationally as a pianist, composer,
singer, and entertainer. As a driven humanitarian, he is dedicated to combining his musical pursuits with
his charity work. At three years of age, the Hollywood, Florida native begged his parents for piano lessons
and discovered an uncanny ability to hear a song once and play it back note for note. His deep musical
knowledge, broad tastes, and staggering talents make his performances a treat for the whole family.
Onstage, Ethan performs relaxing jazz, dazzling classical music, raise-the-roof rock n roll, and his own
memorable originals. He knows hundreds of songs that he can instantly call up to memory. Ethan is not
only a musician; he recently finished filming a full-length feature film called “Anything Is Possible”. It will
be released in late 2013. He co-wrote all of the songs in the film and scored all the background music.

Beylerian CollectionTapestries of the Silk Road and Drawings of Karl Aegerter (1888-1969)
December 5 – January 9Opening Reception
Thursday December 5, 7-9 pmDuring his travels over the past two decades, Dany Beylerian, a Memphian, has researched,
collected, and traded extensively the various textiles of the Silk Road. He plans on opening an art gallery in Memphis in 2014.
The silk tapestries that will be on display are from various eras and regions of the Silk
Road. They comprise large, finely handwoven textiles of raw silk dyed with natural, organic
sources such as pomegranates, cochineal insects, indigo, and madder root.
In addition to silk tapestries, there will be the Drawings of Karl Aegerter. Aegerter was a prolific Swiss painter,
draftsman, and muralist from the German Expressionist school. Living through both world wars, he documented the plight of refugees, veterans, and mine workers. He also illustrated anti-fascist satires in his works. The works on display will be available for sale and are part of the Amr/Beylerian Collection.

Opera Doesn’t SuckPresented by Ned Canty & Opera Memphis
Let’s face it, the majority of Americans would rather be beaten with sticks than go to see an opera. This presentation talks about opera, why people think it sucks, and why they are so very, very wrong.
Four singers, one piano, and one doofus with a slideshow. Opera Doesn’t Suck is a part of the 30 Days of Opera, Presented by Evolve Bank and Trust, a month-long festival of performances throughout Memphis and the surrounding areas. Now entering its second year, the program is supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Getty Foundation.
Performances range from pop-up opera in parks and libraries, to original children’s opera, “Greatest Hits” concerts and presentations for opera newcomers such as Opera Doesn’t Suck.

Did You Know?Yoga Can Be Considered
Strength Training!Strength training entails repeated exercises that move the
specific muscles in the same pattern against a resisting force. Yoga offers the benefit of combining strength work and stretching. There are plenty of postures in
yoga in which the arms or legs push toward a straight position against resistance, in the process strengthening
extensor muscles such as the triceps and quadriceps.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) reports on a 2005 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin that tested 34 previously sedentary women to examine effects
of three hour-long hatha yoga classes per week. The 17 women who were assigned to the yoga group performed
an average of six more push-ups and 14 more curl-ups following the study period. Poses useful in increasing
upper-body strength include the plank, the camel, half moon, boat and revolved triangle, ACE reports. As one gets
fitter, strength training becomes crucial, and thus yoga is complementary to – not a replacement for – weight training.

Jeremy Weiser: Program DirectorAs MJCC’s first-ever Program Director, he works with all of the departments year-round to plan and execute exceptional programming for our entire community.
Jeremy is no stranger to the MJCC as he grew up in Memphis and at the MJCC. “My family and I are thrilled that we made the move to Memphis. It is exciting for us to live in the same community as family. We look forward to reconnecting with people as well as making new relationships,” he explains.
Jeremy has a Bachelors from the University of Maryland and a Masters in Public Policy Administration with a certificate in non-profit management from the University of
Missouri - St. Louis. Jeremy served as the Youth, Family and Teen Director at the Siegel JCC in Wilmington, Delaware for six years before returning to Memphis. In this role, he also served as Camp director for their camp of over 600 campers. He created partnerships with local organizations that helped enhance their camp offerings.
Prior to his time in Delaware, Jeremy was in St. Louis, Missouri. He held many positions at the St. Louis JCC, including BBYO director, Young adult coordinator, and Assistant camp director. Jeremy’s over ten-year experience in programming for all ages makes him a perfect choice for this role. Jeremy explains, “It is extremely exciting for me to continue my professional career where it all started. If I haven’t met you yet, I look forward to connecting with you.”
