Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.
A record number of 579,678 members lived by those 12 short words of the FFA motto as they experienced the opportunities in the organization in 2013. Every day, the signature blue jacket is worn by thousands of those young people and proudly displayed by many more – alumni, supporters, employees, elected leaders, parents, volunteers and educators. The commitment to the motto, the blue jacket, the FFA Creed and – most of all – the impact drives us year after year at FFA and feeds into the future of agricultural education.
Looking back on 2013, we have a lot of success to celebrate made possible by you – our supporters. Over the course of the year, the National FFA Foundation built partnerships with industry, individuals, education, government and foundations to secure resources for the future of education, agriculture and student development. Through these partnerships, and with the support of generous individuals, we have been able to engage on the local, state, national and even global level like never before. It is our pleasure to share with you our achievements and efforts in this annual report.
2013 was declared the “Year of the Famer” by Ram Truck brand and what “Year of the Farmer” is complete without FFA? In a venture with the National FFA Foundation, Ram Truck partnered with Case IH, Farms.com and other companies to raise awareness and generate funds for FFA hunger-relief efforts. On Feb. 3, with its “Farmer” television spot during Super Bowl XLVII featuring FFA, the campaign was launched. Because the spot received views on YouTube that significantly and quickly surpassed the 10-million-views goal, Ram Truck
later donated $1 million to FFA – in part supporting the FFA Feeding Our World – Starting at Home platform.
Farmers need advocates, too. In 2013, individual donors Glenn and Maggie Stith established a planned gift endowment that in future years will send students to premier leadership training – the Washington Leadership Conference – in our nation’s capital, ensuring the next generation of agricultural advocates.
Not only did FFA grow in membership and national attention, but we also increased our capacity on the local level in communities across America through the service of our students and volunteers. Take, for instance, the FFA: Food For All grants, for which FFA chapters may apply to support yearlong service-learning projects that address local hunger needs. In 2013, the second year of the program, 132 FFA chapters in 42 states were awarded FFA: Food For All grants that will help local members fight hunger in their communities. A total of $300,000 in grants was awarded to FFA chapters in 2013.
In addition, 6,127 FFA members partnered with 8,224 non-FFA youth to volunteer a combined 156,163 hours in their communities to fight hunger. As a result, more than 207,000 pounds of fresh produce, meat and eggs were donated by FFA: Food for All grant recipients last year!
As we look back on the past, we must realize the future is also imminent. We continue to focus on the FFA mission to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. As the global population continues to grow, we are challenged to build leaders for tomorrow.

With millions of baby-boomers retiring from the workforce now and in the near future, a vacuum of talent will be needed to fill jobs throughout the industry of agriculture. Enter the National FFA Organization’s Career Development
Events. CDEs prepare FFA members for successful careers in agriculture. Members
develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively
in a robust work environment.
FFA feeds the future of agriculture through career development events
Tomorrow Looks Bright...thaNkS tO FFa
Agriculture teacher Kari Williams sees firsthand how CDEs prepare FFA members for the future. When Kari started teaching the Chandler FFA Chapter in Arizona, she began to research the 24 different CDEs covering job skills in everything from communications to mechanics. “I tell the students to try something out to see if they like it because it’s a great way to try a career they are interested in,” Kari said.
She then enlisted the help of experts she knew to coach the CDE teams. She had one coach particularly in mind for the farm business management CDE. “I am lucky enough to be married to an expert in agricultural economics,” said Kari about husband Josh, who is also a former FFA member. He studied agricultural economics at the University of Arizona.
The Farm Business Management CDE helps members develop business management skills and learn to apply
economic principles to agriculture and agribusiness. This event is designed to test the ability of members to apply concepts in analyzing the management decisions of owning and operating a farm.
To build their confidence and encourage a strong team, Josh befriends each member of the CDE team and fosters strong friendships among its members. He teaches them the economic principles involved in farm business management and preps them to analyze management problems. “There are high school freshman on the team doing a college-level test,” Josh said. “They learn to be self-sufficient in studying and apply these skills later on in college and their careers.”
Josh’s experience growing up on a farm and learning economics allows him to teach the importance of accounting to track expenses in business and personal finances. “The students gain skills to guide them in their life choices,” Josh
said. Kari sees FFA members working together as a team to understand the material. “They don’t know a lot at first, then they build friendships and learn everyone must pull their weight in order to win,” Kari said.
Chandler FFA has had many state winning teams and placed as a bronze emblem team at the 2013 National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, Ky. Kari and Josh see the students continue to learn and become more competitive each year. “Success breeds success,” Kari said.
John Deere sponsors the farm business management CDE as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The company sponsors the event to underscore the importance of a solid business management background to the young men and women who will be operating our country’s farms in the future.
Amy Allen, manager, national corporate contributions at John Deere, said, “Feeding some nine billion people by mid-century brings with it unprecedented challenges for today’s farmers. Farm business management skills will help producers prepare to meet these critical needs.”
– Lauren Schwab
Participants in career development events combine hands-on activities with written tests and exercises. All are focused on specific career pathways.
The National FFA Foundation strives to provide opportunities for FFA members to help them sustain a successful career in agriculture; however, these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the help of individual
and corporate endowments, which are allowing FFA to continue to fuel the future of agriculture.
FFA feeds the future of
agriculture through
endowments
6 | 2013 Annual Report
Endowments are created when a donor gifts a large amount of money to support the continual work of an organization. The principal of the gift is invested and remains untouched, generating interest and earnings that are then used for the specified purpose of the endowment.
The FFA foundation uses endowments to create ongoing impact through dynamic student programs, ensuring the long-term
sustainability of FFA.Each of the people behind
the establishment of these FFA endowments has a powerful story and legacy to share.
After Monsanto employee Kevin Eblen passed away in 2012, Monsanto established the Kevin L. Eblen Memorial Scholarship Endowment in his memory. Eblen served as a national FFA officer in 1986-87, and now his legacy of leadership lives on
GIFtQuite a

through this endowment. The $25,000 endowment supports an
annual scholarship to a college-bound FFA member who wishes to pursue a degree in agriculture. Preference is given to a student from Eblen’s home chapter in Creston, Iowa.
John Raines, vice president of global integrated farming systems and Precision Planting Co. at Monsanto, said Eblen was one of those individuals who played a significant role in helping FFA fuel and secure the future of agriculture through his support.
“Kevin was a believer in FFA since high school through his local involvement, which eventually advanced to the national level when
he served as the national president in college. He believed in youth development, and this endowment was one way we could allow that to happen for years to come,” Raines said.
Robert and Pauline Wells also chose to support student scholastic success and established an endowment to support an annual scholarship to a current or former FFA member pursuing a college degree. First preference for the scholarship is given to students from southern Minnesota or northern Iowa or a student pursuing a career in agricultural education.
Robert worked at Hormel Foods for 38 years. He also served on the FFA foundation’s sponsors’ board in 1986
and 1987. Robert said that while the formally
perceived image of agriculture may be changing, FFA is working to help reshape that image and continue to fuel the future of agriculture at the same time.
“Previously, agriculture was defined as farming, raising of livestock and so on. That is falling into fewer hands, and we have fewer farmers farming fewer acres,” Robert said. “Agriculture is becoming more scientific and more futuristic – due to these innovations, I believe FFA is forward-looking in their programs and securing the future of agriculture as a result.”

When someone mentions FFA, undoubtedly an image of the blue corduroy jacket emblazoned with the FFA emblem comes to mind. Worn by millions of youth, the jacket is synonymous with nearly 90 years of
premier leadership, personal growth and career success, and continues to inspire the future of American and global agriculture. Sadly, many FFA members can’t afford to purchase a jacket of their own. To give the members a chance to earn their own jacket, the Give the Gift of Blue program was born.
FFA feeds the future
of agriculture through Give the
Gift of Blue
8 | 2013 Annual Report
Through Give the Gift of Blue, members can apply to receive a free FFA jacket paid for by sponsors and donors. A survey by the National FFA Organization showed there are states in which less than 10 percent of FFA members own a jacket. The jackets they wear are hand-me-downs or spare jackets from chapter closets. The jacket costs $60, but to many members and their families, that is too much. The program kicked off in October 2013 and the first jackets were given in January 2014. Already the program has awarded 300 jackets to deserving students in 28 states.
One recipient was Trey Struck of Humboldt, S.D. Struck, a member of the West Central FFA Chapter, was encouraged to join FFA by his family and friends.
“My parents said that they could not afford to buy me an FFA jacket,” Struck said. “They had recently divorced and the farm just came off a two-year drought. Yields were low, resulting in a decreased income. I applied for a jacket through the state foundation but was unsuccessful.”
Struck then applied to the Give the Gift of Blue program. He wrote he needed a jacket so he could continue to be a role model for his siblings, who in turn motivate him. By receiving his jacket, Struck believed he could prove to his family how much he cares and how he can grow as a leader. Had Struck not received his jacket from national FFA, he would have had to borrow one and wait a year until he could find the funds to purchase his own.
“My jacket means a lot to me because it is a memory that I will have for the rest of my life,” Struck said.
The program would not have been possible had Ram Trucks not dubbed 2013 the “Year of the Farmer.” The success of the commercial aired during Super Bowl XLVII and the subsequent campaign sparked the creation of the coffee-table book, “The Farmer in All of Us: An American Portrait.” Understanding the important emotional connection FFA members have to the jacket, Ram Trucks wanted as many members as possible to feel connected to this iconic part of the FFA tradition. Shared values of dedication, hard work

and commitment led to Ram Trucks giving a donation of $25,000 toward awarding FFA members a jacket, from sales of the book. Their contribution was combined with donations from CSX Transportation and individual donors.
Though 300 jackets have been
awarded, there may be as many as 300,000 deserving members who won’t be wearing their own jacket. Give the Gift of Blue. Give a member the chance to start their own legacy. Learn more and donate today at www.FFA.org/GIVEBLUE.

Learn by doing. Participants of the State Presidents’ Conference have a premier learning-by-doing experience each summer, setting the tone for them to go back to their home states and communities and tell their stories.
SPC is a five-day conference exclusive to two officers from each state, hosted in Washington, D.C., each summer. In addition to leadership development, participants cultivate an understanding of partner relations and begin the delegate process that will culminate at the National FFA Convention & Expo.
State Presidents’ Conference attendees learn how to advocate for FFA and agriculture to legislators and community leaders.
The 2013 conference theme “Suit Up” inspired state officers to suit up for the world, the nation, American agriculture, FFA and FFA members.
“Since SPC I have been more purposeful about ‘suiting up’ for our members, giving them the best of my time and abilities,” said Wally Martin, 2013-14 Florida FFA Association secretary. While at SPC, Martin had the opportunity to visit with several congressional aids, making connections and sharing about the positive experience he has had in FFA and with agricultural education.
Skills honed at SPC continue to benefit him; the experience prepared him for Florida’s state-level event “Ag on the Hill,” where around 200 FFA members met with state legislators. At the local level, Martin is asked to speak with the superintendents or local commissioners advocating for agriculture and FFA when visiting chapters around Florida.
“Because of SPC I had a great perspective on what to do and say on these visits. Spreading such a positive
message is a huge win within our state,” Martin said.
Drew Ratterman, recruiting and talent development leader for marketing and sales at Dow AgroSciences, added, “It is inspiring to me to see how the members conduct themselves, represent their constituents and the industry of agriculture on Capitol Hill, and seeing the impact they have on legislatures.”
Both Archer Daniels Midland Company and Dow AgroSciences have been valuable sponsors of the National FFA Foundation for more than 50 years.
“Partners like ADM and Dow AgroSciences ‘suit up’ for FFA members each year through their support of FFA programs like State Presidents’ Conference. Their commitment to agriculture, both at home and abroad, is a model for the future leaders of the industry of agriculture,” said Shane Jacques, education specialist with the National FFA Organization.
“The conference is a great opportunity to put a face with a name; there are more than 500,000 members in the
organization, but here we have 100-plus of the student leaders. These students crave academic and career advice, and we want to be there, representing Dow AgroSciences,” Ratterman said. “These conversations can lead to recruitment and overall advancing the industry of agriculture.”
SPC is a pipeline of potential, not only within the individual members but with the possibilities of quality discussions and advancements in FFA. SPC feeds into the future of agriculture through leadership development as members learn to lead a delegation, and advocate for agricultural and career and technical education and FFA.
“ADM sponsors the State Presidents’ Conference because we share in the charge of training future leaders in an agricultural industry that is technologically advanced, economically sound and environmentally responsible,” Mark Schweitzer, a member of the National FFA Foundation Sponsors’ Board and managing director of intermodal and international container freight at ADM, said. “We know that a well-executed discussion with a congressional leader can mean an exponential impact in respect and regard for individual members of FFA, the National FFA Organization and the agricultural industry as a whole.”

Because of FFA, Butcher has experienced memorable moments such as the famous Paul Harvey speech and President Jimmy Carter’s inspiring address at the 50th anniversary of the National FFA Convention in 1978. He has coached countless young people all across the state of Michigan in
parliamentary procedure (his specialty and passion) and continues to drive 4,000 to 5,000 miles each year to do so.
Butcher remains a steadfast FFA advocate wherever he goes. He and his wife, Janice, own Red Barn Greenhouse in Centreville, Mich. Each year, they help facilitate plant sale fundraisers
Harry S. Truman once said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.”
This is Bill Butcher’s favorite quote, and he believes words to live by. Butcher joined Michigan’s Byron FFA Chapter in 1972 as a seventh grader because his brothers before him had been members. Joining would change his life.
“If it had not been for FFA, I would not have met my wife or my best friend, and I would not have been an agriculture teacher or business owner,” Butcher said.

for local FFA chapters through their business. Members sell perennials to fund FFA needs such as trips to the Washington Leadership Conference and other banquet awards.
From 1981 to 1990, Butcher was a high school agriculture teacher. He is concerned about the future of agricultural education due to the deficit of available teachers in the workforce.
Since FFA is invested in creating the classroom leaders of tomorrow, including a gift to the National FFA Foundation through his will was an accessible way to help provide long-term, viable funding to support the future of agricultural education.
Butcher has supported FFA wherever possible because, as he puts it, “FFA is also family.” By being Forever Blue and remembering FFA in his estate plans, he has ensured that his legacy is one of commitment to providing a bright future for agricultural education.
There are currently about $5 million of deferred planned gifts in place to benefit the National FFA Foundation.
Through their wills, trusts, life insurance policies and other types of planned gifts, the organization’s most
loyal supporters have demonstrated their enduring commitment to the FFA mission by remembering FFA in their estate and financial plans. The gifts provided by this devoted group will serve as a pipeline of funding to sustain FFA and support its members well into the future.
As a way of saying “thank you” to this group, the National FFA Foundation recognizes supporters who give planned gifts as members of the exclusive legacy giving society, the Forever Blue Circle.
The organization’s planned gift donors have made arrangements which will, for example, cover costs for members to attend WLC, deliver financial assistance for supervised agricultural experiences, provide scholarships for the
pursuit of higher education and offset operational costs with gifts structured to provide funding where the need is greatest.
These dedicated supporters truly “believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds.”
They are Forever Blue, and the beneficiaries of their generosity will forever know their legacy.
If you have planned a gift to the National FFA Foundation, or if you would like to speak with someone about how you can be Forever Blue, contact Ethan Miller at [email protected].

The ffA Mission ffA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their
potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
The Agricultural Education Mission Agricultural education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems.
The national ffA organization is a resource and support organization that does not select, control or supervise state
association, local chapter or individual member activities. Educational materials are developed by ffA in cooperation with the u.S. Department of Education as
a service to state and local agricultural education agencies.
The national ffA organization affirms its belief in the value of all human beings and seeks diversity in its membership, leadership and staff as an
equal opportunity employer.
