For a decade now, Austin Peay men and women’s golf teams have held their home golf tournaments in the Fall. From 1999-2003 the tourna-ment was named the Precept Intercollegiate, but a new partnership was formed. Since the 2004 season, it has been the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. The women’s tournament is a two-day, two-round event played at the 5,960-yard Clarksville Country Club. The men’s tournament is a two-day, three-round event played at The Links at Novadell, a par-72, 6,841-yard course in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Austin Peay has had much success on both sides of the event. Staci Lynch (2006) won the women’s individual title in 2006. The Lady Govs have won the team title twice, in 2000 and 2002

The Govs have won their event seven times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011), and have had the individual medalist six times as well. Grant Leaver (2005,2006) is the only two-time champion. In 2008, Erik Barnes shot the program’s fi rst-ever sub-200 round at the tourna-ment with a 66-66-67=199. Sophomore Marco Iten won the 2011 event after a two-hole playoff.

GOVS HEAD COACH KIRK KAYDEN Kirk Kayden was named Austin Peay men’s golf coach in July, 2004 and he has not only sustained the Govs’ 60-year golf tradition, but as well elevated it to a higher level, capturing the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Champion-ship along the way. Kayden took over the Govs program after Austin Peay won three consecutive Ohio Val-ley Conference Championships (2001-2003) and has led the team to 37 program records in eight seasons. The 2011-12 was bittersweet for the Gov-ernors and Kayden. Unquestionably it was one

of the best regular seasons in Govs history. They won back-to-back tournaments for the fi rst time since 2002-03, capturing Cincinnati’s Bearcat Invitational and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. During the spring, the Govs became a regular in the fi nal pairing. The team knocked on victory’s door in almost every tournament, making the fi nal group fi ve times in six events, while taking home three second-place fi nishes. Dustin Korte earned fi rst-team All-OVC while Anthony Bradley was voted sec-ond. Freshman Tucker Wallace was chosen to the OVC All-Newcomer team. However, when it was all said and done the Governors fi nished 38-1 against OVC competition, but that one loss came to Jacksonville State in the conference tournament, preventing the young Govs from achieving their goal of advancing to NCAA play. But Kayden still saw his sophomore Bradley capture the medalist title and ac-companied him to the tournament. In addition, Korte also earned OVC all-tourney honors. The Govs built off a 2011 season that featured a talented recruiting class. In fact, three freshmen regularly appeared in the spring lineup. Two of the freshmen, Bradley and Marco Iten earned All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer honors while Korte also earned All-OVC honors. The Governors were in a rebuilding mode after losing one of the Govs’ fi nest players in history, Erik Barnes, following the 2010 season. Barnes played an intricate role in the Govs’ 2009 OVC championship run, that saw APSU rally over the fi nal few holes to capture the title. The 2008-09 season was a memorable one for Kayden, highlighted by an OVC Championship and a program-record 13th-place fi nish at the NCAA Central Regional. Erik Barnes set the individual 54-hole record with a three-round 199 – the program’s fi rst-ever sub-200 round – leading the Govs to a nine-stroke tourna-ment win. In fact, during that Fall season, the Govs fi nished in the top fi ve in every tournament played. Kayden kept the Govs rolling during the 2009 Spring schedule. A second-place fi nish at the Morehead State Spring Kick-Off was a precursor to winning the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate, placing three Govs in top-10. Barnes would go on to take medalist honors at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational two weeks prior to the team’s OVC Tournament win. It also was a season that saw the Govs set a record for the lowest 18-hole team score after setting records for 36- and 54-hole team scores in 2006-07. Under Kayden’s guidance, student-athletes have earned a total of 15 All-OVC honors, including two Freshman of the Year selections (Erik Barnes, 2007 and Grant Leaver, 2005), while Barnes also was named OVC Player of the Year in 2009. On the team side, Kayden has helped lead the Govs to the four lowest 18-hole rounds in school history, eight of the 10 lowest 36-hole rounds and 12 of the 14 lowest individual 54-hole records, setting 80 individual records. In the 2007-08 season, Kayden coached the Govs to fi ve top-fi ve tournament fi nishes—the Troy University Invitational, the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate, the Aldila/Middle Tennesse Intercollegiate, the Arkansas State Indian Classic and the OVC Championship. The Govs’ best performance came at the Arkansas State

Indian Classic where the team fi red a 30-under-par 834 and set numerous team and individual records while holding off tourney host Arkansas State. In 2006-07, Kayden led the Govs to seven top-fi ve tourney fi nishes—the Xavier Invitational, the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, the F&M Bank APSU In-tercollegiate, the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the UALR/First Tee Collegiate and the OVC Championship. The Govs’ best effort came at the Belmont Intercolle-giate, as they set numer-ous team and individual marks while fi ring a 28 under-par 824, to run away with the title. Before coming to Aus-tin Peay, the Fremont, Ohio, native played an in-tegral part in Penn State’s three straight NCAA re-gional appearances, in-cluding a 15th-place fi nish at the NCAA champion-ships in 2004. He helped coach Penn State’s Athlete of the Year (Andy Latowski in 2001-02), the Big Ten Sportsman of the Year, (Jonas Hyden in 2002-03) and an honorable mention All-American (Mark Leon in 2003-04). The Nittany Lions also had six All-NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region selections dur-ing his tenure. Penn State had the program’s lowest (2002-03) and second-lowest (2001-02) scoring averages with Kayden’s assistance. Kayden was an outstanding prep golfer at Fremont St. Joseph’s. In 1991, he won the Division III Ohio High School Golf Championship and was voted the Ohio High School Golfer of the Year for his outstanding play and overall sportsmanship. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame last weekend. Kayden then signed to play his college golf at Toledo, one of the mideast’s top Division I golf programs, where he was coached by current Notre Dame head coach John Jasinski. He was a three-year letterman for the Rockets, including winning the Ohio Collegiate Classic as a junior. After graduating in 1997 with a bachelor’s in sports management, Kayden worked as an assistant golf professional and substitute teacher. During this time, Kayden was asked to run the high school golf program at Central Columbia High School, where he became interested in coaching. After one year at Central Co-lumbia, Kayden was selected to start the golf program at Terra Community Col-lege, also in Fremont. In the fi rst year of the Terra program, the team advanced to the National Ju-nior College Athletic Association’s Regional Tournament and fi nished the season ranked fi fth nationally in Division III. During Kayden’s three years at Terra, he coached three all-conference academic players and four all-conference players, including the 1999 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year, Dave Omlor. In 2001, Kayden was hired by Greg Nye to become Penn State’s assistant. Nye, the former head coach at Bowling Green, recruited Kayden out of high school. He is married to the former Melissa Hermes, and they have one daughter, Madeline Amelia, born May 8, 2008.

LADY GOVS HEAD COACH SARA ROBSONThe promotion of then-

assistant Sara Robson to women’s head coach when Austin Peay chose to divide its golf programs in the Summer of 2005 was a studied one. That decision has proven to be the right one, as Robson has led the Lady Govs to much success over the past seven years.

Robson is her eighth Lady Govs head coaching season after serving two seasons as the combined programs assis-tant. Throughout the past seven seasons, Robson has guided the Lady Govs to 13 18-hole

team records, 10 36-hole team records and 14 54-hole team records. Individu-ally, Robson’s golfers have set fi ve 18-hole marks, eight 36-hole records as well as six 54-hole records. In all, Robson’s teams account for more than 50 team or individual APSU records.

In 2011-12, Robson’s Lady Govs placed fi fth in the OVC for the second year in a row, one of six top-fi ve fi nishes for the Lady Govs last year. Austin Peay women’s golf also earned the OVC’s Sportsmanship Award and a fourth straight OVC Team Academic honor. Freshman Lauren Bond earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team.

Robson’s team recorded eight top-fi ve tournament fi nishes during 2010-11, led by senior Chelsea Harris who also was the Lady Govs only All-OVC selection. With Harris earning her fourth-straight OVC All-Tourney honors for fi fth-place indi-vidual fi nish, the Lady Govs shot a 948 for fi fth place. In fact, the three-round 948 was APSU’s best-ever three-round OVC tournament total.

The 2009-10 season saw Robson’s hard work manifested in Harris being named the OVC Player of the Year. Not only did Harris earn the top player award, she also took home medalist honors at the OVC Tournament, winning by fi ve strokes. As a team, the Lady Govs earned a fourth-place fi nish, their best tourney fi nish under Robson.

That strong fi nish was expected as Robson’s team notched the program’s top two team 54-hole records. The fi rst came at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational, where they fi nished fourth as a team with a 932. The Lady Govs were one stroke off that pace with a 933, in the spring, at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic.

Her fi rst two seasons as the Lady Govs head coach showed a steady im-provement for a program that would quickly become established in the league. Robson led Austin Peay to an improved stroke average in each of those seasons, working to develop a foundation on which to build for the future.

She brought in local standout Staci Lynch for the 2006-07 season and was not disappointed. As a freshman, Lynch was the Lady Govs top scorer in 11 of 12 tournaments, fi nishing with eight top-10 fi nishes. She won two tournaments – the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate, where she set the program’s 36-hole record at 140, and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. Lynch fi nished with a 76.3 stroke average, which remains the best of any Robson-coached golfer, and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.

During that season, the Lady Govs had three top-fi ve and seven top-10 fi n-ishes: the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, the Troy Women’s Intercollegiate, the Ann Rhoads/BSC Shootout, Belmont Intercollegiate, the Saluki Invitational, the EKU Spring Invitational and the OVC Championship.

The Lady Govs had six top-10 and two top-fi ve fi nishes in 2007-08, led this time by another freshman, Chelsea Harris. The Metropolis, Ill, native posted a 78.96 scoring average and became the second Lady Govs player to earn All-OVC honors in as many years. Harris also was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and fi nished third at the OVC Championship with a 234.

The 2008-09 season was a banner year for the Lady Govs. Harris was named fi rst-team All-OVC while earning OVC All-Tournament honors with a fi fth-place fi n-ish at the event. The Lady Govs recorded a .321 team stroke average, improving by almost three strokes over the previous season. They set four 54-hole team records, including a 953 at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic. Harris recorded seven top-10 fi nishes and set three 54-hole individual marks – the best coming at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate where she fi red a three-round 230 to fi nish second.

Even with each season’s improvement, Robson has instilled in her team the ability to look forward and prepare for the real goal – an OVC Championship.

Robson’s impact on the Lady Govs has seen success not only on the golf course, but also in the classroom. In fact, during the 2008-09 season Lady Govs sophomore Catie Tucker was named to the National Golf Association Division I All-American Scholar team and received the OVC Medal of Honor for highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport. Tucker, who was one six APSU golfers named to the 08-09 OVC Commissioners Honor Roll, also received the Perkins Freeman Governors Club Scholarship.

The 2009-10 team had three players – Tuck-er, Ashley Wathen and Catherine Smith – named to the NGCA All-American Scholar team. The Lady Govs followed that by win-ning the OVC’s Academic Achievement Award for the third-straight year in 2010-11. That team’s 3.691 GPA was the NGCA’s 12th-highest among nearly 400 teams across the country. Three Lady Govs – Tucker, Holly Batey and Tabitha Beard – earned 4.0 GPAs and received the OVC Medal of Honor. Tucker, in fact, graduated with the Governors Club Academic Achievement Award, owning the highest GPA of APSU senior athletes.

These high academic standards have been the norm for Robson’s teams throughout her tenure. In any given semester, the Lady Govs have never had fewer than three golfers earn some kind of academic distinction.

Robson came to APSU from Belmont, where she served one season as a student assistant after playing for the program from 1998-2001. Her duties as assistant included keeping team statistics and assisting the head coach in all ad-ministrative aspects.

In the summers of 2001 and 2002, Robson was assistant academy director for the Indiana Golf Association. There, she was a group mentor and taught des-ignated programs and clinics. Robson is currently certifi ed as a class A status in LPGA Teaching ranks and as a club professional. Previously, she was a junior golf offi ce assistant for the Tennessee Golf Foundation.

The Metropolis, Ill., native graduated in May 2002 from Belmont with a degree in religion and elementary education. She is married to Eric Robson, and the couple welcomed their fi rst child, Kaitlyn Hope (alias Boomer), on July 27, 2012.
