SPEAKER’S BUREAU REPORT

Speaker’s Bureau Report 2013 Submitted by Angela Mazella

This was a year of new beginnings for the Speaker’s Bureau. Because the notes from the

former chair were not available, we had to recreate most of the material. Here is a summary of what we accomplished and what we started.

Training: We (Mary Barnes, Lee Vadnais, Cathy Michener and Angie Mazella) developed speakers'

training material which outlines the procedures, methods of putting together a talk, reporting and how to give an effective talk. One class was given in 2012 in Prescott and the material was e-mailed to the Speaker’s Bureau (SB) on 3/5/2013.

Special classes: Two PowerPoint training classes were conducted in Prescott and Verde Valley

(February 18 and March 11, respectively). List of all the presentations made by the MGA SB. I gathered all of the presentations made by

MGA speakers (Word documents, PowerPoints, handouts) over the last couple of years. Mary Barnes and I put this material on the website: https://extension.arizona.edu/yavapai-county-master-gardener-speakers-bureau-documents. I periodically ask the SB for copies of their talks. There are 45 MGs on my Speaker’s Bureau list.

List of topics that should be covered. With help from other MGs, I developed a list of topics that SHOULD be covered by the speaker’s Bureau. A starting point for canvassing for speakers and topics.

List of MGs and the topics they speak about. This is an important list that I like to share with clients who request speakers. It is the List of Topics that should be covered (mentioned above) arranged by specific talks and the MGs who have volunteered to talk on those topics. I need to update this list for 2014.

Client list. I made a list of all the people who have requested a speaker in 2013.

Engagements. We received about 22 requests for speakers in 2013. We fulfilled all but 3. The unfulfilled requests were not filled because of timing (needed speaker within a week) or the topics were too esoteric (trees in the Tlaquepaque courtyard). We also conducted 2 OLLI courses on Gardening. The Spring II course included 12 topics by 12 MGs. The other course was 1 MG for a one day course.

Statistics. Tom Watkins is maintaining the Completed Presentations list for Jeff and his annual report. We have given 46 presentations (by 46 MGs) to an audience of 976 members of the Yavapai Community

Special Projects. Some MGs made suggestions about topics we could present to the public. One was on children’s presentations we could make and the other was for new homeowners on what to plant, how to water etcetera. There are 2 groups working on these but as yet no progress has been reported.

2014 Plans. GAPS: There are topics with no presentations and no speakers. It would be nice to get volunteers to prepare talks on these topics and then find speakers. It is easier to find speakers when the research is already done and we have a presentation prepared for them (Word document or PowerPoint). I made a list of all the people who have requested a speaker in 2013. I will send them the list of topics and speakers when it is updated for 2014. Buddy program: Some speakers have requested to go on a talk that another SB member is giving to see how it is done. I will do some pairing in 2014.
