Distinguished Alumni Award | BOB PAGE`79 Bob is president and CEO of The University of Kansas Hospital. He joined the hospital in 1996 as

vice president of organizational improvement and later served as chief operating officer. Bob was named president and CEO in 2007.

Bob has played a strategic role in The University of Kansas Hospital’s transformational journey from a financially troubled organization with poor patient and staff satisfaction to one of the top academic medical centers in the country. Under Bob’s leadership, the hospital has received Magnet recognition and been named to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list for the past seven years (since 2007). Ten of its specialties ranked among the nation’s top 50 and is ranked number 3 in quality and accountability among academic medical centers by the University HealthSystem Consortium.

Upon graduation with a degree in accounting, Bob began his career as a CPA for Pricewaterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). He recently endowed a scholarship in accounting in honor of his mother and in gratitude for the education he received at Illinois Wesleyan. From public accounting Bob moved into internal auditing at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and gained extensive experience in the healthcare industry in financial and auditing positions.

As a CPA, Bob decided to focus on healthcare and said in an interview, “Nothing I have done or will ever do professionally will be as meaningful. Helping people in critical moments of their lives provides lasting satisfaction.”

Robert M. Montgomery Outstanding Young Alumnus AwardCHAD MAXWELL `02

Chad is the Senior Vice President of the Integrated Insights, Human Experience and Intelligence Group at Starcom, one of the world’s largest media and experience design agencies, in developing communication strategies for Fortune 500 companies. As a cultural anthropologist he has a passion for people and their relationships with technology and media. At Starcom, Chad and his team develop research and measurement strategies to understand changing consumer behavior and attitudes. Prior to Starcom, Chad led Razorfish’s Research practice, a digital design and marketing consultancy. During his tenure, Chad directed user research, where he grew research revenue over 500 percent. His findings leverage qualitative and quantitative approaches to better understand consumers and brands. Chad then works with technologists, marketers, and designers to create products and advertising that drive business strategy. Before Razorfish, Chad led Q-Squared Research, a boutique ethnographic consultancy practice.

Chad studied Spanish and Cultural Anthropology while at IWU, and earned his M.A. in Applied Anthropology from the University of Florida. He was a performer with the Illinois Wesleyan Wind Ensemble and Civic Orchestra and today continues to contribute to IWU through his involvement with the Hart Career Center and the Anthropology Department.

Loyalty Award | ALICE FAIRCHILD HEATH `52 The longtime Chair of the Rockford, IL Regional Alumni Club, Alice still remains a very active

member of the committee. Alice attends every Rockford Alumni event and always makes new members feel very welcome. As chair of her 60th class reunion, last year she reached out to every member of her class to encourage them to attend Homecoming and acted as mistress of ceremonies for the Golden Titans Reunion Dinner.

Alice has a long family history in the Bloomington/Normal Community and comes from a very long line of relatives who attended IWU including three uncles, her mother, her sister, and her late husband Bob`49. Alice is proud that 13 of her relatives were Kappa Kappa Gammas at IWU and served as president of the Rockford KKG Alumni Chapter for two years. She has been a consistent donor to the Wesleyan Fund for over 15 consecutive years.

A few of Alice’s accomplishments include receiving Certification as Volunteer Administrator through the National Association of Volunteer Administrators, and serving on the Steering Committee for Rock Valley College Curriculum Development Human Services Dept. In addition, she is Past President of the Northern Illinois Southern Wisconsin Assoc. of Volunteer Administrators and she was named Volunteer Coordinator of the Year by Northern Illinois Southern Wisconsin Association of Volunteer Coordinators.

She was president of the Rockford Chapter Lyric Opera Chicago and is the Deputy Voter Registrar for the League of Women Voters and president of the Winnebago / Boone Counties Genealogical Society. Alice was the recipient of the ATHENA Award in 1994 and was honored as Senior Citizen of the Year by the Rockford Area Council on Aging. Alice continually promotes the University to young people she comes in contact with through her numerous volunteer activities.

Montgomery Outstanding Young Alumnus, Chad Maxwell `02 What impact does Big Data and algorithm-driven pattern recognition have on our cultural development? What is the social scientist’s role in studying the human condition in the era of Big Data? This lecture addresses these questions by tracing the development of pattern recognition in human evolution, charting the growth of accelerated, external pattern recognition, and then considering the potential cultural impacts associated with the era of analytics, algorithms, and Big Data.

3-3:50 pm “Seeing Race in a Colorblind Society” presented by Student Senate 2013 Professor of the Year, Meghan Burke– Despite the reelection of Barack Obama and the successes of the Civil Rights Movement, racial inequality in the U.S. is deep and persistent. How do we understand the ways that race continues to matter, especially given the social pressure to remain “colorblind”? This session will use contemporary examples to explore how racism operates in 2013.

4-4:50 pm “How to Transform an Under Performing Culture” presented by Distinguished Alumnus, Bob Page`79– In the late 1990s, the future of The University of Kansas Hospital was bleak after many years of lackluster performance with the potential of staggering financial losses. Specifically addressed will be the critical role of leaders both in achieving transformational change and in sustaining a high-performance culture. This story is meant to define personal actions necessary for a leader in today’s economy.

How can we find a meaningful past if we do not have a ladder of memory that connects us to our own pasts? How can a nation of immigrants have such dismissive attitudes towards immigrants, or is this another manifestation of our heritage of attitudes toward color? We have to confront our failures as well as our achievements. After a 47 year career of teaching Professor Bushnell retired in April. Internationally-known Academy Awards expert Tariq Khan ’93 will discuss some of the fascinating facts, memorable moments and sizzling scandals from the Oscar’s 85 year history. Tariq is a producer at the Fox News Channel in New York City and serves as the network’s official Academy Awards writer and on-air commentator. One of the most prominent Oscar pundits in the country, his articles have been discussed in The Hollywood Reporter, The Los Angeles Times and Vanity Fair among others.

Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurse Programs at Rush University College of Nursing, Chicago, IL. Dr. Miller is an active researcher and gerontological nurse practioner who publishes extensively and presents at national and international venues. She has been honored for teaching innovation, clinical research, and professional development. A Saturday morning social and awards ceremony honoring Dr. Miller will be held in the CNS Atrium. Dr. Miller will present a keynote address immediately following the social.
