We are pleased to bring you our 2013 Atlantic Canada Landscape Directory. In this pub-lication you will find listings of our members within the Atlantic associations; Landscape NS, Landscape NB, Landscape NL and Landscape PEI. In addition, you will discover useful information about this growing industry.

The Atlantic Landscape Associations are trade organizations representing the provincial landscape industries. Members of the provincial green industry / horticultural associations are committed to providing quality products and services, environmentally sustainable and professional practices to the consumer.

Our associations promote high standards in product quality, professional service and con-duct in the horticultural trades industry; and to encourage the use of Association members by the public. This is achieved through training initiatives, industry certification, networking and encouraging environmental best practices.

This year has been especially rewarding for our industry. While NB has its Apprenticeship Program up and running for 3 years now. New Brunswick has produced its first class of ap-prenticeship graduates in March of 2013. These Apprentices became the first to challenge the Interprovincial Red Seal exam. New Brunswick now has upward of 45 Journeypersons registered. Landscape NL and NS had their first Red Seal exam sitting in early 2013! To date Newfoundland & Labradour has eight (8) Journeypersons and Nova Scotia has twenty-one (21)! With more writing in NL and NS this year. This designation further enhances the cre-dentials of our industry and quality of service to offer it’s clients. Be sure to check out on the on-line version of the directory posted on the provincial web sites with links to advertisers web sites.

Past-PresidentPaUL MaCPhEEMacPhee’s Landscaping Services

Paul MacPhee, Past President of Landscape Nova Scotia, is also the owner / operator of MacPhee’s Landscaping Services. In business since 1995, he has spent the last 14 years steadily growing the company concentrating on quality customer care. Services provided include: pro-fessional design, as well as, installation and maintenance contracting.

He graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College with Landscape Horticulture. He has been serving on the board for several years now and continues to work closely with the associa-tion’s Spring Ideal Garden and Patio Show.

PresidentPETER BUGDENNutri-Lawn

Peter Bugden was born in Corner Brook, NL and graduated from Acadia University with a BBA in 1977. Peter has been the owner of Nutri-Lawn franchise in Nova Scotia since 1990, serving Metro Halifax, Annapolis Valley, South Shore.

Peter has served as Treasurer and Vice-President for Landscape Nova Scotia since 2007. Peter vol-unteers as President for Central Minor Hockey Federation and is Past President of the Dartmouth Whalers Minor Hockey Association.

Vice-PresidentLaURa COUPaR Elmsdale Landscaping Limited

Laura Coupar is the Vice President of Operations at Elmsdale Landscaping Limited and has worked in various stages of the turf grass and soil production industry. This is her fourth year of involvement with Landscape Nova Scotia and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President. Laura graduated from Saint Mary’s university with a Commerce degree in 2007, majoring in accounting.

TreasurerMiKE fRaLiCKFralick Financial & Insurance Inc.

Mike is the president of Fralick Financial & Insurance Inc. He began his career in the insurance industry 21 years ago after completing his B. Comm. degree from St. Mary’s University in Halifax. He obtained his associateship with the Insurance Institute of Canada in 1996 and his Chartered Insurance Professional designation in 1999. Mike is an active member of the Chartered Insurance Professionals Society and the Insurance Institute of Canada. He is a past board member and he is an instructor for the Insurance Institute.

Mike is also the president of the Fall River and Area Business Association and a past vice president of the St. Margaret’s Bay Chamber of Commerce. In his current role as president and advisor of Fralick Financial & Insurance Inc., he provides; life, health, disability and critical illness insurance coverage, group benefits insurance, travel medical insurance, and provides estate, financial and retirement planning.

CNLa RepresentativeROBiN GODfREyAtlantic Gardens Ltd.

Robin Godfrey is second generation owner of his family business, Atlantic Gardens and Lakeland Plant World. Robin grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia and graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1993 with a BBA. Upon graduation, Robin returned to Nova Scotia and the family business started by his parents Peggy and Jim Godfrey in 1968. Currently, Robin is the operations manager of the growing facility in Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia and General Manager of the retail store Lakeland Plant World in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Robin serves as the CNLA Representative on the board of Landscape Nova Scotia. Robin resides in Ham-monds Plains with his wife, Angela and their children Alexander and Marielle.

RUSSELL BEaKhOUSEGroundcover Landscape Services

Russell Beakhouse graduated from the NSCC Landscape Technician program in 1999 with honours after a career change as the Regional Manager Of Revlon Canada for 12 years. Russell has owned and operated Groundcover Landscape Services Ltd since 1999, an award winning landscape con-struction firm that specializes in residential landscape installations and renovations.

Russell is the Chair of the Garden and Patio Show Committee, a Past President of Landscape Nova Scotia and sat on the Board of Directors for many years. He was delighted when asked to return and sit on the Board of Directors again and looks forward to lending a hand. Russell resides in Hubley, NS and has been married to Melinda for 24 years and has one daughter, Sarah.

GRaNT MaDERShaw Brick

Grant has been employed with Shaw Brick for 2 years. He did inside sales in at the Dartmouth location for most of that time, but has been moved into an outside sales position where he looks after home builders and landscape contractors within Nova Scotia.

He attended Acadia University where he studied Business Administration. Grant grew up in Enfield and now lives in Elmsdale where he is involved with the Enfield Rugby Club.

aNDREW PaLMERBlomidon Nurseries

Currently General Manager with Blomidon Nurseries (1970) Ltd in Greenwich, Nova Scotia, Palmer previously spent several years with an industrial equipment supply company in the golf and turf industries in Atlantic Canada where he started out as Territory Manager in 1996. His commitment to new business development and customer service earned him a promotion to Operations Manager in 1999, and, in 2008, he was promoted to General Manager, a position at which he excelled, and that prepared him for his next career challenge with Blomidon Nurseries.

Originally from New Brunswick, Palmer holds a Diploma in Horticulture and Turf Management from Ontario’s renowned University of Guelph where he graduated with honours. When not working, he enjoys a good game of golf, hockey or softball.

CaROL GOODWiNDalhousie University

Carol Goodwin is an Associate Professor of Landscape Horticulture in the Environmental Sciences department in the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University. Her area of research is the propaga-tion and production of native plants, but her primary focus in on teaching. Carol joined Landscape Atlantic in 1976, and has been an active member almost without interruption ever since. She was Head Gardener at Mount Saint Vincent University from 1976 to 1987, when she moved to Ontario to attend the University of Guelph. Carol was a charter member of the Atlantic Region Certification Committee, joining in 1994. She has helped to administer the certification test annually, and has contributed suggestions for changes to the test. Carol joined the Board of Landscape Nova Scotia in 2007. She is also a member of Landscape New Brunswick. When she isn’t busy working on behalf of the industry, she relaxes in the pottery studio.

DaViD ThOMPSON Weed Man and Christmas Décor

David Thompson is the president of the Greenpoint group of companies, which operates Weed Man and Christmas Décor franchises throughout the Maritimes. Prior to joining this family business, David was a business lawyer for 13 years with Boyne Clarke in Dartmouth and Lang Michener in Vancouver. David presently serves on the Board of Landscape Nova Scotia and Plant Health Atlantic. David has also served on boards and committees of several charitable and community organizations, including the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Oikocredit Atlan-tic, and the Savage Humanities Trust, among others. David lives in Dartmouth with his spouse Kate and his two daughters, Maya and Portia.

Pam has graduated with a diploma in Architectural Technology (NS Community College) and an-other in Landuse Planning (Centre of Geographic Sciences) and has been designated as a Registered Canadian Professional Manager and is a member of the Canadian Professional Managers Associa-tions.

Pam has many years of experience working with not-for-profit organizations, government and indus-try over the past 20 years and has worked as researcher, project coordinator and graphic designer. Pam worked with the Environmental Services Association of Nova Scotia as the Program Director

for 11 years. Pam has experience in fund raising, training initiatives, securing funding to sustain associations, event coordination, member services, government relations, international trade initiatives, public awareness and educa-tion, program development, and communications.

Environmental horticulture Students Receive awards at Dalhousie University (faculty of agriculture)

Landscape Nova Scotia and Landscape New Brunswick Horticultural Association jointly award a $600 scholarship to the most promising second-year Diploma in Managed Landscapes Technology student.

Selection criteria include academic performance and practical work skills.

Danielle Brubacher of Scotburn, NS is a 2nd year Managed Land-scape student at Dalhousie University (Faculty of Agriculture) and was

our 2012 recipient.

This award is presented in memory of a man who was instrumental in the establishment of the three professional landscaping organizations in Atlantic Canada. Serving as Secretary of Landscape Atlantic during its formative years, Ray Webber was always there to inspire and to help. He carried the load of many and was well loved by all who knew him.

Today, Landscape Nova Scotia and the Landscape New Brunswick jointly sponsor the Raymond Webber Memorial Scholarship. In the spirit of helping others attain their goals, this award is given to a promising NSAC student soon to join the industry. Selection criteria consider applicant’s academic performance and practical work skills. The faculty and teaching staff of the Landscape Horticultural Technology Program make the selection of the recipient each year.

The industry took time to recognize these achievements by a long time standing member of Landscape NS, Mr. Stan Kochanoff. Stan’s Education began at the Technical University of NS where he earned a Masters of Urban and Rural Planning. He has a bachelor of science in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and also attended the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture. Stan is a practicing landscape architect for the past 38 years, and is President of two companies; Environova Planning Group and Maritime Landscape Services. Stan has worked on many projects all over the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec. He was the first to qualify with the

American Society of Consulting Arborists as a Registered Consulting Arborist in Atlantic Canada, and one of seven, in all of Canada. He is and has been President for many community associations not the least of which have included; past president and member of Landscape Canada and CNLA. He was the President of Landscape Atlan-tic before it separated to the regional provinces. He was past President of Landscape Nova Scotia and to this day remains on as chair of the specifications committee for LNS. Stan remains active in the industry and life as well. He still plays hockey, skis, acts, golf, coaches, works out and plays a role with many affiliated associations and groups. He has done many great things and is well deserving of this award.

Past PresidentNEiL PONDUrban Landscape Ltd.

Neil Pond is the President and founder of Urban Landscaping Ltd. Located in Rothesay, New Brunswick. Formed in 1989, Urban Landscaping Ltd. provides design build landscaping services as well as landscape maintenance services year round. Neil has pioneered many IPM (integrated pest management) techniques and services in his region and is a proponent of organic and organic-based lawn care approaches. Neil also established a composting and soil manufacturing division called Urban Organics which has been in operation for 10 years. Urban Organics utilizes yard waste, wood waste, and various food-based biosolids in its operation. Finished products are sold in bulk to local medium & high-

end horticultural markets. Neil is a graduate from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Landscape Horticulture Technology and is also a certified Master Composter. Neil is also an active member of LNBHTA (Landscape New Brunswick Horticultural Trades Association) and is currently the chair of the LNBHTA Environment Committee.

Darrell owns and operates Lawn Rangers Landscaping and Lawn Care/ Christmas Décor in Moncton. He has been involved with our board since 2004, serving 2 years during that time as President. Darrell is currently representing NB on the CNLA board of directors, and serves on the Member Services Commit-tee. Without Darrell’s dedication, effort and work ethic, our training programs would not be what they are today, not to mention how he has carried the ball on apprenticeship in the province.

Karen was born in Truro and graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology. While working as Greenhouse Manager at Lake-land Plant World in Dartmouth, Karen attended Mount Saint Vincent University where she com-pleted her Bachelor of Education and went on to teach in the public schools. Looking to return to the landscape industry and the great outdoors, Karen opened Kutting Vine Garden & Lawn Main-tenance in 2008.

Since joining LNB, Karen has attended many seminars and courses, and obtained her IPM Turf Practitioner and Pesticide Applicator certifications. Given the opportunity to mix two career paths in one, Karen stepped forward as one of two instructors for the Landscape Horticulturist Apprentice-

ship program. In her first year on the LNB board, Karen has also become involved with the ACES and Environ-ment committees.

DaVE MiLBURN, B.TECh/ENViRO.hORT., CLTFocal Point Landscape Design and Installation

Dave‘s interest in pursuing a career in the horticulture industry was sparked while working for a lo-cal landscape company as a summer student. This interest led him to work many seasons with that particular company as well as obtain his CLT designation in landscape installation and a degree in Environmental Horticulture from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

After gaining both educational and practical experience he opened his own landscape company Focal Point Landscape Design and Installation in Fredericton, New Brunswick. His company spe-cializes in predominantly residential landscape installation in and around the Fredericton area. His company thrives to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and sustainability while

creating outdoor spaces that customers will enjoy for a lifetime. Dave has a passion for continued education, certification and the apprenticeship program and looks forward to helping and being active in the horticulture industry progression both as a member of LNB’s board of directors and as a landscape contractor.

Joe Wynberg of Signature Landscape in Moncton is a third generation Landscape Horticulturist in New Brunswick and one of the first journeyman to be designated in our new trade. He has been involved in Certification over the years and this year celebrated the birth of his second child.

ShERRy CLayBOURN Shaw Brick

Sherry has been with Shaw Brick for a little over 20 years, and is currently serving her first term on the LNB board. She manages their Fredericton Retail store and covers a sales territory of part of NB and the US, as well as looking after the larger buying groups (dealer coordinator). She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Fredericton chapter of the Canadian Home Builders Association.

aNDREW LaWSON, CLTScott’s Nursery

After graduating from University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Education degree, Andrew took a summer job at Green Village Home and Garden in Fredericton, and has been working in the industry ever since, currently at Scott’s Nursery. In the past 15 years in the horticulture industry, he have been an active member of the Fredericton Botanic Garden Association serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering for major fundraising events. He has also been involved with Landscape New Brunswick serving on their Board of Directors and in organizing and participating in various educational events throughout the years.

BEN SChOLTENScholtens Landscaping

Ben Scholten, owner of Scholtens Landscaping, is on his second go round on the LNB board, having served as president back in the early nineties. Ben is also a journeyman in the Landscape Horticulture trade, and serves as one of our instructors in the block training part of the program.

BOB OSBORNE Corn Hill Nursery

There is way too much to say of the Corn Hill Nursery founder in this little space. He started farming in 1980, grafting and growing fruit trees. Expanded gradually to include all things hardy and perennial. Built retail store in 2000. In addition to nursery work he does talks, writes, does a weekly gardening column in the Moncton Times Transcript, does a weekly gardening show on CBC Moncton. He does not golf, fish, hunt or invest in diamonds.

He is a founding LNB member and has served 2 terms as president. He’s a mentor to us all.

JaMEy SMiTh, CLT Red Oak Landscaping

Red Oak Landscaping founder, Jamey Smith, comes from a history of landscaping. Jamey gained experience working for his grandfather and uncles, becoming the third generation of landscapers in the Smith family. He went on and studied Landscape Design at Humber College in Ontario, Landscape Construction and Plant Material at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Landscape Design at the University of Guelph. Jamey has his Certificate of Qualification for Horticulturist Landscaper, & Greenskeeper issued by the Ministry of Skills & in 1994 Jamey established Red Oak Landscaping and incorporated his business in the year 2000. Jamey’s main role on our board is to recruit more Island members, and to have them develop their own chapter.

JiM LaNDRy, CLP, CAEExecutive Director

Jim has worked virtually all of his life in the landscape industry. In the seventies he received his Ontario diploma in horticulture from the University of Guelph, spent his formative years working in a greenhouse operation, followed by a quarter century at a nursery/garden centre.

After a dozen or so years as a volunteer with LNB, Jim has taken on the full time position of Executive Director.

On Saturday, March 23, 2013 Landscape New Brunswick presented Michelle Gillespie with the Lifetime Honorary Member Award.

Michelle Gillespie of Sun Nurseries in Sussex was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of Landscape New Brunswick at the 10th Annual Awards of Landscape Excellence Gala in Moncton on March 23, 2013.

“There are dedicated industry people, and then there are dedicated industry people” remarked a Main Street hobo (aka Jim), before he ambled into the night air, somewhat befuddled by what he himself just said.

In all seriousness, it is a well deserved honour, albeit with no cash value. Rather it is an expression of much deserved appreciation for her years of service on the board, where she was always an uncompromising enforcer of the associations moral and professional standards. Quite a wonderful person to know.

Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador held its 2nd Annual Landscape Awards of Excellence Gala in St. John’s, NL on April 27th with 3 awards handed out among the organizations’s member companies. The event was a great success!

EligibilityThis provincial program is exclusive to Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador members.Members can submit projects from the past three years of work.

Jury and JudgingA jury of distinguished professionals in the fields of landscape design, education and horticulture will evaluate entries based on the materials (both plant and construction), design, completeness of installa-tion, workmanship and horticultural correctness in landscape installation and maintenance using only the images, plans and descriptions submitted with each entry.

Ross Traverse was born in the small community of Loon Bay in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, in 1944. He attended the Nova Scotia Agriculture College and subsequently MacDonald College of McGill University, graduating in 1966 with a B.Sc. in Agriculture. He completed a Masters in Agriculture from Guelph University in 1970, with a Major in Plant Nutrition and a Minor in Extension Education Methods. Upon graduation from the University of Guelph, he was employed by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Forestry and Agriculture as a Horticulturalist. He was appointed Director of Crop Production in 1971, Director of Extension in 1972 and Crops Coordinator (Horticulture and Agronomy) with the Departments of Fisheries, Food and Agriculture in 1978, a position he held until his retirement in 1995.

During his career with the provincial government, Ross became widely known for his expertise in horticulture, providing advice to established commercial greenhouse growers, new agri- entrepre-neurs and home gardeners alike. He taught courses in horticulture throughout the province and spoke many times at conferences and workshops on horticultural production. He was an advisor and mentor to many professionals working in the industry. His advice was also frequently sought by senior officials and Ministers in the provincial government on agriculture policy and special initiatives in the horticultural sector.

During his early career, Ross was instrumental in develop-ing methods for the production of landscape sod on peat soils and helped establish the province’s first commercial peat turf farm at St. Shotts. Based on systems he studied in Scandinavia, he also developed methods for the commer-cial excavation of peat for use in the production of peat based soil mixes.

Ross has also provided consulting services for the private sector in areas related to horticulture production and industrial uses of peat moss, including projects in Egypt and the Caribbean, and has taught courses in Horticultural Production at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His book, Ask Ross Traverse about Gardening: Practical Advise for Gardeners in a Cool Climate, first published in 2006, is now in its second printing.

His early retirement from the provincial government pro-vided Ross with an opportunity to devote more time to his own ornamental greenhouse business, Traverse Gardens, in Torbay, which he established in 1978. Ross continued to provide advice to home gardeners and commercial greenhouse growers in the province. Ross has contributed to many feature articles in the print media and has written gardening columns in several local newspapers and magazines. He appears regularly on CBC Radio’s Gardening Crosstalk, and on VOWR Community Radio. Through these venues, Ross has encouraged many residents of the province to become more engaged in ornamental horticulture, landscaping, and fruit and vegetable crop production.

In 1995, Ross was awarded Lifelong Membership in the Canadian Society of Extension in recogni-tion of sustainable and outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of extension. The award also recognized his many years of work as a communicator and promoter of agricultural awareness and the impact he had on raising the profile of agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ross’s affiliations have also included the Agriculture Institute of Canada, Canadian Society of Horticulture Science, Canadian Consulting Agrologists Association and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. He was a founding member of Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador in 1992, and was recently nominated to the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.

In recognition of his outstanding service to agriculture and horticulture, Ross Traverse is indeed a worthy recipient of the first Landscape Newfoundland & Labrador Lifetime Achievement Award.

Just three years following the designation of Landscape-Horticulturalist as a Red Seal occupation in New Brunswick, AOC in partnership with Landscape New Brunswick has produced its first class of apprentice-ship graduates. Within a short timeframe, Landscape New Brunswick was quick to establish the infrastructure needed to deliver technical training via the Landscape Horticulture Training Institute (LHTI). As a result, in Jan-uary 2011, the first block of Landscape-Horticulturalist apprentices entered the classroom and in March of 2013 they became the first apprentices to challenge the In-terprovincial Red Seal exam. NB currently has 45 Jour-neypersons.

The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (also known as the Red Seal Program) was estab-lished more than 50 years ago to provide greater mobility across Canada for skilled workers. Today it represents a standard of excellence for industry. Through the Program, tradespersons are able to obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their provincial/territorial certificates by successfully completing an interprovincial Red Seal examination. The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program acknowl-edges their competence and ensures recognition of their certification throughout Canada without further examination.
