In his first eight years, the Cougars won 16 conference championships and earned 14 NCAA tournament berths,

including five Freedom Conference titles and six NCAA berths in 2011-2012.

Martin also served as interim head women’s basketball coach a year ago and led the Cougars to their first Freedom title and NCAA bid.

In addition, he guided the Cougars through the transition from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference to the freedom Conference and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) in 2008.

Most recently, he oversaw the addition of varsity football which will begin play in 2012 and makes Misericordia one of just two conference schools to offer all 23 sports sponsored by the MAC.

He has also overseen the addition of men’s tennis and women’s golf as a varsity sports offering at MU.

Martin previously spent 14 seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Misericordia and served as associate athletic director and coordinator of athletic recruiting.

He led the Cougars to 11 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoff berths and two PAC finals appearances.

Martin compiled 178 career wins at MU and was a four-time PAC Coach of the Year.

A graduate of Wilkes University, Martin earned a master’s degree in education from Misericordia.

The athletic facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-athletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf field at the Anderson outdoor Athletic Complex, Tambur field, Metz field House, McGeehan field, Anderson softball field and six tennis courts.

since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams. The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio. The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf field at the Anderson outdoor Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs. The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson sports-Health Center, Anderson outdoor Athletic Complex and Anderson field are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T foundation.

Tambur field, honoring the Robert Tambur family, will provide a new home for the MU baseball team beginning with the 2013 season.

McGeehan field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, will open in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz fieldhouse was constructed in 2012 and will provide meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams. The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community.

Mu athletic FacilitiesMisericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation.

While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.

Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens.

Athletics participation at many of the 432 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and in athletics.

That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities.

In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success.

This is evidenced by MU’s overall 3.20 GPA among student-athletes and 145 MAC all-academic honorees in 2011-12.

While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the Division III level.

Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 40 conference championships and sent 18 teams to the NCAA Championships.

The women’s soccer team became the first team to advance to the Division III Final Four (2012).

In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericordia on the national map:

Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion.

Willie Chandler, basketball: second-leading scorer in D-III history.

heather Dougherty, swimming: School’s first NCAA All-American.

Sam helmstetter, women’s soccer, two-time All-American.

Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led D-III in blocks per game.

Amy Bower, cross country: All-American.

Frank Redmond, track & field: MU’s first track & field All-American.

Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in career assists.

Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game.

founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution serving both residential and commuting students.

sponsored by the religious sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United states and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.

The University is dedicated to the values of the sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects.

The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high-quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum.

With 2,812 students, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution.

small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.

Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

2013 season PReviewThe Misericordia University track & field teams hope the success they enjoyed during the 2012-13 indoor season translates into a successful outdoor season.

After a runner-up finish at the MAC Indoor Championships, the women’s team has its sights set on a MAC title while the men’s team seeks its best finish ever at the MAC Championships.

“We believe our women’s team has a chance to compete for the MAC Championship,” said MU head coach Chris Wadas. “We had a good showing at the indoor championships and we think we have more depth and are a stronger team outdoors.”

Leading the way is a strong group of upperclassmen, including senior Marina orrson.

“Marina is determined to qualify for the NCAA Championships and she will compete in a variety of events from 800m to 10,000m to accomplish that goal,” said Wadas. “she is one of the top distance runners in the MAC.”

Also returning is junior Ashlee Ward, a former NCAA Championships qualifier who will compete in the high jump, shot put and discus.

After qualifying for the NCAA’s as a freshman, Ward just missed the cut a year ago. “Ashlee set an personal best and won the MAC indoor high jump title,” said Wadas. “We expect a big season from her in all three events as she looks to get back to nationals.”

Like Ward, senior Jill Dunn missed a trip to nationals by one spot a year and hopes to rectify that this year in the 400m hurdles. “Jill was so close to making nationals a year ago,” said Wadas. “We’re focused on getting her there this year.”

Dunn is also among the MAC’s best in the triple jump and long jump.

Junior stacey Perrins returns in the sprints after winning the 200m at the MAC Indoor Championships.

senior steph Grow also returns in the sprints where she is All-MAC in the indoor and outdoor 400m.

“stacey and steph provide with depth in the sprints,” said Wadas. “They both should be among the top finishers at the MAC championships.”

senior Kelsey Cameron and junior Bridget Comiskey will be key performers at 800m where they ran together throughout the indoor season.

other seniors include Maura o’rourke in distance events and rachael rutkoski in the pole vault.

“The women’s team has plenty of veteran experience and leadership,” said Wadas. “That experience should work to our advantage in a championship environment.”

While the men’s team finished seventh at the MAC Indoor meet, the Cougars did record their highest-point total ever.

senior Joe Ardo returns in the shot put and hammer throw while classmate John Gibbons is back in the mid-distance and distance events.

“Joe and John are the only seniors on the men’s team,” said Wadas. “They have plenty of experience and we expect them to have solid senior seasons.”

Junior Aidan Marich is a returning All-MAC performer at 100m and could challenge for a top-three finish there while sophomore A.J. Limongelli returns after earning All-MAC honors at 5000m a year ago.

sophomore Jarrett Higley will join Gibbons in the 800m after both recorded top-eight finishes at the MAC Indoor meet.

The Cougars are anchored by freshman Andrew Nelson in the 200m and 400m where he recorded solid indoor finishes.

Classmates Nik Atkins and Carl Daubert are expected to have big seasons in the

triple jump and 400m hurdles, respectively.

Junior Angelo Scaffido is in his first season with the team and is expected to contribute in the javelin.

“We are young, but we are deeper than we’ve been recently,” said Wadas. “We have the ability to score points in many different events and our goal is to improve on our point total at the MAC’s.”
