About Bowls Queensland

Bowls Queensland is the peak body for the sport of lawn bowls in Queensland and northern New South Wales.As of July 2012 Bowls Queensland had 36 member districts, with 335 clubs and more than 40,000 individual bowling members.Bowls Queensland runs numerous state competitions, such as State Championships, Champion of Club Champions, District Sides Championships and State Pennant Finals.Queensland state teams also compete in national and interstate events at under-18, under-25, open and over-60 levels. One of Bowls Queensland’s main responsibilities is the development of the sport of lawn bowls.A team of three development officers visits every club in the state annually, putting in place various participation programs that are helping grow membership of the sport.

History

Prior to 2004 the sport of bowls in Queensland was administered by two separate organisations: the Royal Queensland Bowls Association and the Queensland Ladies Bowling Association.These organisations amalgamated in 2004 to create one unified state body: Bowls Queensland.The RQBA acquired the extremely successful Queensland Bowler publication in 2002. The magazine was in its 25th year of uninterrupted publication at the time. In 2004 the Queensland Bowler became the official publication of Bowls Queensland.

Since first hitting the newsstands in 1977, the Queensland Bowler has built up a reputation as one of the nation’s most respected sports magazines.A must read for over 40,000 bowling fans across Queensland and northern New South Wales, ‘the Bowler’ is in its 35th year of uninterrupted publication.It is not only one of Australia’s longest running bowls magazines, but also Queensland’s only statewide bowls publication.Printed on high-grade glossy stock, ‘the Bowler’ reports all the latest bowls news and views from Queensland and beyond.We include feature stories, player and club profiles, reader submissions, not to mention regular columns which cover diverse subjects such as green keeping, coaching, development, law and umpiring.In September 2008 the Queensland Bowler launched its online edition, becoming the world’s first digital bowls magazine.As a not-for-profit publication, all profits from advertising in the Queensland Bowler are pumped back into the sport of lawn bowls.
