About the Dugout ClubThe North Muskegon baseball program began the Dugout Club in 2010, which was the 75th season of Norsemen base-ball. Since then with support from people throughout our baseball community, we have been able to provide our players with a top-notch facility and the proper equipment necessary to continue this tradition. These donations helped offset costs of team equipment, such as catcher’s gear, bases, batting cages, etc. Each level donor had their name printed in this program as well as receiving a copy of the program and a Norsemen window decal. At $25, donors received a T-shirt; at $50, a T-shirt and a cap; at $100, a T-shirt, a cap and a hooded sweatshirt; and at $200, a T-shirt, a cap, a hooded sweatshirt and a pullover. The 2013 Dugout Club donors brought in more than $3,600. As head coach of the North Mus-kegon baseball program, I thank you for supporting these young men. – Warren Kent III, head coach

Page 13: 2013 NM Baseball Program

There’s a strong tradition of baseball at North Muskegon, which celebrated its 75th season in 2010. The Norsemen were one of the dominant forces in the West Michigan Conference in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, winning 12 of the school’s 14 conference titles in that time frame.

The beginning of North Muskegon baseball can be traced back to 1935 when Lyle McNitt led the Norse to a 5-1 record. After having no team in 1936 for reasons unknown, McNitt led the Norse to back-to-back WMC titles. He would also lead NM to the league title in his final year in 1942.

In the 1940s and early ‘50s, Paul Moyes led the Norsemen to five conference titles while Earl Meyers won a WMC championship in 1945. Arnold Wilson’s only year at the helm saw the Norse capture the title in 1952. Dunc Lectka captured two WMC titles with wins in 1953 and 1955.

From 1960 to 1966, NM exited the WMC to play in the Seaway Conference. In Bruce Benson’s four years, the Norse shared the Seaway title in 1961. The Norse won the Seaway outright in 1963 under Lee David. In 1967, the Norse returned to the WMC, where the Norse captured the conference title in 1972 under Larry Blackmer.

After that, the rest of the 1970s, the ‘80s and the early ‘90s were lean years for the Norse as NM posted winning records in just three seasons from 1973 to 1994.

The longest-tenured coach in North Muskegon was Walt Gawkowski, who led the blue and gold for 19 years (1987 to 2003), winning five District titles and posting 183 wins.

In 2004, Warren Kent III took over and led the Norsemen to the school’s second County title and the school’s sixth District championship in his second season. Kent would lead the Norse to both titles in 2007 also.

But it is the 2008 team that will go down as one of the best in school history. The Norse smashed the school

record with 34 wins. En route, this senior-dominated team brought home five trophies: the Reeths-Puffer Invitational championship, the school’s first WMC title since 1972, the County title, the district crown, and the school’s first-ever regional crown. After that, the team won its quarterfinal game before ending its season in Battle Creek in the state semifinals.

The 2009 team won the district crown, and the 2010 squad won 20 games.

In 2011, the Norse won 24 games while winning the school’s 10th district title before losing in the regional title game.

The 2012 season was bittersweet. While the Norse won 26 games, which was the second-most in school history, the team did not win any championships. The 26 wins was the seventh time in school history that a Norse team won 20 or more games.

The history section of the North Muskegon Baseball web site was created by head coach Warren Kent III with much of the historical research done by local sportscaster and sports historian Jim Moyes.

What began as “let’s post all of the school’s baseball scores” turned into a monster research project that took many hours to research and transcribe. It is our desire that other schools will see our site and become excited about doing the same for their schools in a number of different sports.

With this era’s modern technology, Internet use, and the multitude of libraries that have local newspapers on microfilm, this project and others could become a reality.

With that said, there are still gobs of information miss-ing that we would love to post on our web site. It is virtu-ally impossible, with the information that has been made available to us, to come up with career statistics for those who played before 1993.

We have in our possession all the scorebooks for games played from 1993 through the 2011 season. Prior to 1970, it was rare to see mention of one’s batting aver-age in the Muskegon Chronicle. Unfortunately, there was nothing like The Sporting News available where we could post each game’s box score into our data base. How we would love to know what former legends, such as Bill Duplissis, batted in the early years of North Muskegon baseball.

What we have been able to track down is informa-tion as reported in local newspaper accounts from each game. These we have passed along to our readers as listed under “Interesting Facts.” The neat thing about a web site is that corrections and additions can be easily and quickly made. If you have any information you would like to add, please contact Jim Moyes at [email protected] or Warren Kent III at [email protected]. – Jim Moyes, NM Baseball Historian

Season Summary (26-13 overall, 8-6 in West Michigan Conference): In a season that saw the Norse win 26 games, the second-most in school history, it was the games that got away that hurt the most. Of the team’s 13 losses, seven were by one run. Those one-run losses included five in the opposing team’s last at bat and four in the bottom of the seventh. For some reason, the Norse could not win the close games at the end. In those 13 losses, opponents outscored the Norse by 31 runs (85-54) for an average of 2.4 runs per game. On the positive side, the Norse outscored its opponents 257-56 in their 26 wins. This truly was a team: each of the 12 regular players played in at least 30 games, had at least 55 at bats and had at least 15 hits, and no player posted a batting average of less than .273. Overall, the team, batted .331 (341-for-1,029), the second-best in the coach Kent era. NM also set two records: team at bats (1,029) and innings pitched (245). The Norse also tied last year’s team with 39 games played. No surprise in the batting order, as the No. 3 and No. 4 spots post-ed the highest averages, .381 and .413, respectively. As usual the first inning proved its importance: the Norse were 11-3 when leading, 9-6 when tied and 6-4 when losing. In 20 games, NM did NOT score a run in the first inning and had seven other games where it scored just one run; that means the Norse scored two or more runs in the first inning just 12 times.

Although there were seven seniors on the roster, it was junior Adrian Anderson who led the team in most offen-sive statistics. Adrian, the team’s Most Valuable Player, led the team with a school-record 122 at bats, 47 runs, 46 hits, 20 doubles, four home runs and 42 RBI. He tied for the team lead with 39 games played, which is also a school record. His .377 batting average was second-best. Adrian was also the team’s No. 2 pitcher, posting a 6-4 record while striking out 56 and walking 24.

After Adrian, it was mainly seniors who led the way.• Chase Raymond won the batting title with a .418 average (38-for-91) while playing a solid right field. Chase

also led the team with a .545 on-base percentage and seven hit by pitches.• Austin West, the team’s No. 1 pitcher, had the team’s third-best batting average with a.363 (33-for-91) and

tied a school record with his 39 games played. On the mound, Austin posted an 8-5 record while striking out 57 and walking just 13 in 76.66 innings.

• Hector Garcia, the No. 1 catcher, tied for the team lead with six sacrifices while posting a solid .330 batting average (34-for-103).

• Noah Rhyndress, easily the team’s Most Improved Player, posted a .328 batting average (21-for-64), and on the mound, had a 5-1 record while striking out 40 and walking 13 in 40.66 innings. He had a 1.55 ERA while opponents batted just .220 against him.

• Curtis Taylor, the starting first baseman and Gold Glove winner, just missed the .300 mark for the second straight year. This year, Curtis batted .298 (28-for-94).

• Ben Ocharzak, the starting second baseman, played in a school record-tying 39 games. He also tied for the team lead with six sacrifices and led the team with a 16 stolen bases. On the mound, Ben set a school record with three saves.

• Jon Ackley, the back-up first baseman, played solid defensively (only one error) while batting .273.

In addition to Adrian, four other juniors contributed to the team.• Rogan McEvoy, who manned the third-base position, batted .330 (31-for-94). He also posted a 3-2 record

on the mound while leading the team with a 1.38 ERA in 30.33 innings. Opponents batted just .191 against him.

• Jack Gautraud, who played center field, led the team with 24 walks while batting .286. Unfortunately, he also led the team with 26 strikeouts.

• Chase Cooke, the back-up catcher, posted a .281 batting average.• The only other junior to lead an offensive category was Adam Edick, who had one of the team’s two triples

for the season.

Four sophomores saw limited time on varsity, but the foursome (Travis Webster, Jesse Dunn, Reese McCa-mant and Ryan Compeau) collectively batted .560 (14-for-25) while scoring 18 runs. Compeau had one of the team’s two triples.

Although the baseball field at the end of Eimer Street was constructed in 1920, baseball at North Muske-gon High School began at that spot in 1935 when Lyle McNitt led the team.

Prior to the high school fielding a team, the field was used by an NM independent team.

The first game ever played by the Norse in 1935 saw NM score 19 runs vs. Montague – yet lose 23 -19. The combined 42 runs scored between the two teams has only been equaled, but never broken, in school history.

According to a 1947 short video of a game played at

NM, a road used to go west about 50 feet north of the first base line all the way to Fowler Street. Additionally, a grandstand was located be-hind home plate until it was torn down in the mid-1950s.

In 1986, the Norse played the entire 20-game season on the road as major reno-vations were being imple-mented.

Underground sprinkling and a complete reseeding of the outfield were among the improvements made. Practices were held on the rocky grounds at Pioneer Park.

In 1988, the field was named after North Mus-kegon Superintendent of

Schools, James B. Johnson, who passed away from can-cer in December of 1987.

Johnson, who prepped at Muskegon High, became an All-American at Western Michigan University and made it to the major leagues as a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants in 1971.

Appropriately, one of the main performers for the Norsemen in 1988 was James C. Johnson, son of the late superintendent.

While the field was intended for baseball use only, it served as a football practice field until the 1990s when a new practice field was built with money gener-ated by selling trees with

monuments placed beneath them down the left-field line and at the south end of the football field.

In the 1990s, the current scoreboard was donated by Mary Johnson Moyes, and Bob Walters built the press box.

According to Jim Moyes, NM baseball historian, the longest home run at Johnson Field was hit by David Miller of Whitehall in the 2000 season. The ball landed in the trees across the street in right field.

In 2001, the infield, at a cost of $18,000, was donated by members of the North Muskegon Drewry’s team from the early 1960s.
