Welcome to the 4TH Annual OC Film Fiesta!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 4th Annual OC Film Fiesta. This year’s festival includes exciting thematic spotlights on Science Fiction, Indigenous Cultures, and prolific writer Philip K. Dick, who lived in OC and is the visionary mind behind such films as Blade Runner, Total Re-call, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. Join us as we celebrate Cinema and Santa Ana’s cultural heritage! Science Fiction has always been a beloved genre popular with audiences since the dawn of films. We have chosen three exciting films: a screening of one of the earliest Sci Fi imaginings of a dystopian society, Metropolis, with live accompaniment and in collaboration with the new Frida Cinema; the Disney film John Carter, which was based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic A Princess of Mars; as well as the new adaptation of Radio Free Albemuth, penned by Santa Ana’s own Philip K. Dick. We are even having the screen-ing day christened “Philip K. Dick Day” by the City of Santa Ana!

Our spotlight on Indigenous Cultures includes a gorgeous film shot on-location in Bolivia by a Japanese crew, the edgy experimental film Apache Chronicle and Randy Vasquez’ haunting doc about US Indian school dys-function A Thick Dark Fog.

We were also fortunate to secure a collection of native-produced shorts from southern Mexico from Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal’s Ambulante Film Festival! Our aim is spotlight indigenous cinema voices from North & South America as well as provide a taste of post-futurist hybridity.

Framing these thematic choices are our opening and closing films, the multi-cultural musical tour de force Mariachi Gringo, and the family film Alondra Smiles. Both reflect downtown Santa Ana’s diversity and fea-ture partnerships with local performers and businesses. Be sure to catch Mariachi Anacatlan’s soaring vocals on opening night and our rooftop mini Quinceañera Expo with a fashion show showcasing an important sector of Santa Ana’s businesses community that will feature more than 30 lavish gowns.

We wish to express our thanks to all our sponsors and partners who help make the Film Fiesta a true community celebration.

As always, all of our screenings are free, except for “Metropolis,” which will be a fundraiser for the new Frida Cinema. So take advantage of our free and fun-filled festival to celebrate OC’s diversity and explore Santa Ana’s beauti-ful & historic downtown.

Viva Santa Ana!

1:00 pmOur Nixon

Dir. By Penny Lane2013, USA, 83 min.

Our Nixon is made up Super 8 footage created by H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and Dwight Chapin, which was seized by the FBI during the Watergate investigation, then filed away and forgotten for almost 40 years. This all-archival documentary presents those home movies for the first time, along with other rare footage, creating an intimate and complex portrait of the Nixon presidency as never seen before. Throughout Richard Nixon’s presidency, three of his top White House aides obsessively documented their experiences with Super 8 home movie cameras. Young, idealistic and dedicated, they had no idea that a few years later they’d all be in prison. A unique look at Orange County’s own President at the prime of his political career. www.ournixon.com.

The filmmaker is Kevin McKiernan (The Spirit of Crazy Horse; Good Kurds, Bad Kurds). Kevin McKiernan’s career as a journalist and filmmaker has taken him to some of the world’s most troubled regions, from Nicaragua to Iraq, from West Africa to Afghanistan; his work, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, has been published by Time, Newsweek and The New York Times, and appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. Berkeley record store clerk Nick Brady (Jonathan Scarfe) begins to experience strange visions from an entity he calls VALIS that cause him to uproot his family and move to Los Angeles, where he becomes a successful music company executive. With the help of his best friend, science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick himself (Shea Whigam), and a mysterious woman named Silvia (Alanis Morissette), Nick finds himself drawn into a dangerous political-mystical conspiracy of cosmic proportions. The film also stars Katheryn Winnick. With songs and score (co-written) by cult singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock. Radio Free Albemuth is required viewing—not only for sci-fi aficionados, but for anyone interested in true independent cinema. Filmmaker John Alan Simon will be on hand to discuss how he brought PKD to the screen.

It is year X in the City Without a Voice, and the only individual who retains the ability to convey her thoughts through speech is the mysterious Voice.Writer/director Esteban Sapir offers a cautionary tale of media control in this highly stylized thriller that draws on film noir and German Expressionism to tell the tale of a society that has literally lost its ability to speak after bowing to the constant barrage of broadcasts and products of the omnipresent Mr. TV (Alejandro Urdapilleta).
