September 14th was our first in the series. Five sailboats participated, 3 Harpoons, a Hobie Cat, and a San Juan, with the wind cooperating all the way. We completed 2 races starting in Sunset Harbor and rounding markers out through Lemon Point into Lake Weir and back. The Harpoons were highly competitive following the Hobie, as I recall, and having a great time at it .... while the San Juan was having fun doing its own thing. Look in this newsletter for some of the photos.
I would really like to encourage any of you that have boats to come join in on the fun. It is a great way to prepare for the "Sunset Harbor ChallengeRound the Lake Regatta" which is coming up on October 26th.
In our August meeting we discussed having instructional classes for reviewing current racing rules and applying racing strategies. To follow up on that, Bob Cole has arranged for the first class onOctober 20th, which is one of our Sunday Sailing Lemon Point Days. The class will be on the Sims porch at 1 PM with an opportunity to apply the knowledge on the water immediately after the class. Even if you do not have a boat, plan to come out for this event and jump on a boat. This is a good way to delve into rules, practices and strategies for the starting line, rounding markers and sailing etiquette in general.
We are planning to have another class on November 16th as well. Please plan to come out for these.
By the time you receive this newsletter, we will already have had our "Margartaville Party" at Wayne & Pat Birkenmeyer's place on Sunset Harbor. I want to be sure to thank them for the generosity and hard work they will do and have done in the past to allow us to have this festive event at their lovely home. Thank You! Pat & Wayne!! I can taste those Margaritas already.
In the meantime, we need a member to volunteer to host the October OSC members dinner meeting on the 17th. Contact Jan Schumacher if you are interested in volunteering.

Meet by boat at Lemon Point on Lake Weir every 3rd Sunday of the month
The Fall Sailing series has started with our first races on September 14th. The wind was light but we managed to get two races run. There were 5 boats out for the event and we hope for more participation for the October 26th “Around the Lake Race”. The “Around the Lake Race” information and signup can be accessed at www.regattaregistration.com. Please help us by signing up early so we will know how many boat classes there will be at this year’s event.
We are planning a class on sailing rules, start sequence, flags and starting techniques in October and November. There will be handouts with definitions and a print out of the flags used during a race to communicate with the sailing competitors. If you are interested please reply to the eVite for the Racing Rules and Strategies Class.
These are two of the best ways to improve your sailing ability and be a safer sailor at the same time. The rules are designed to make sailing safe when boats are in close proximity to one another. Sailing rules clearly state which boat must keep clear. The best ways to improve your sailing abilities are time on the water sailing and learning from other sailors. These classes should be fun and informative, hope you will attend one or more.

John Hult made a motion to obtain club flags from other sailing clubs participating in our Regatta’s to hang on display at OSC Regatta events . The first flag for the
collection was then presented to Commodore Art Twitchell by John Hult and Ed Sims ~ the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club Flag from our Jamaican friends, Ian Gibson

HIYC Iron Skillet Regatta
A couple of weeks ago Lynn and I crewed on a Swiftsure 33 at the Harbor Island Yacht Club http://www.hiyc.org/index.htm near Mt Juliet, TN. The Iron Skillet Regatta is a race in which you DO NOT want first place. The winner must use his or her Iron Skillet to cook a meal for
the next years regatta participants! Using a handicap system for the variety of boats in the race, a race committee announcement is done after all boats have returned to the dock.

Commodore Art Twitchell brought the meeting to order shortly after dinner.
It was another very fun “Margartaville” Party at the Birkenmeyer’s lovely home in Sunset Harbor on Lake Weir! Thanks so much to Pat and Wayne for hosting this wonderful annual event once again!
We had quite a few guests join us this year . . . some new sailors in the area, previous OSC members, members we haven’t seen in a while, and neighbors and friends of members. Welcome to all ~ please join us again!

There was discussion about scheduling the November Buccaneer Night around the Ocala First Friday Art Walk on November 1, 2013. It may be difficult to make reservations for a large party at a restaurant near the exhibits. Stay tuned for further details.
John Hult made a motion to collect all burgees from surrounding clubs that we sail with for display during our Regatta’s. We will swap our burgee for their burgee. John Hult and Ed Sims then presented the first burgee for the collection to Commodore Art Twitchell ~ from the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club.
Art Twitchell presented Wayne Birkenmeyer with a signed “Thank You” card from the children involved with the Firewise Nature Camp in July. Wayne volunteered to teach the children about how wind moves a sailboat as a part of their program about Fire and Wind. The card was signed by all of the kids involved.
