Renee BurkeYearbook AdvisorBoone High School1000 E Kaley St, Orlando, FL 32806(407) 893-7200

Dear Mrs. Burke:

I am interested in the Boone High Schools photo editor position. Currently, I am a member of the yearbook staff where I have learned to use Photoshop and InDesign. On staff I have had the opportunity to work with cameras as well as develop creative angles. Please accept the resume attached for your review and consideration for the position of photo editor.

As being a part of the yearbook staff, I have learned how to create a spread. I have experience with interviewing, writing stories, and taking photos. Along with this I have gained knowledge in using InDesign and Photoshop. With this experience I will be able to focus on the aspect of taking pictures with creative angles and I will also be able to help anyone else who would need it.

I enjoy thinking of unique ways of taking pictures. This position would give me the opportunity and experience to continue to grow and take pictures. I am also very dedicated and when I am passionate about something I do it to my fullest extent.

Although you can see my experience through my resume, I feel a personal interview would be the best way to demonstrate my abilities and dedication. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your consideration and review. I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully yours,

Ashley McKee

My journey to yearbook all started when I transferred from Dr. Phillips High School to Boone High School. To become a staff member on yearbook I knew you needed to take one year of journalism. After a year in journalism I decided that I wanted to apply to become a yearbook staff member, so I did, and luckily I got accepted.

When I first started yearbook, I had no idea what I was in for, it was like I had been dropped into another world. I have to say, first deadline was the greatest challenge for me but I know I learned

a lot from the experience. The most important thing I learned this year was not to be scared of the computer. I still remember every time I messed up the page or deleted something I would close my

eyes in fear that I wouldn’t be able to fix it. Miraculously, this was when I was introduced to the most beautiful invention ever made, it is called “command z”, and it has been my savior ever

since. I also learned many other things through this course that I couldn’t have learned in any other class at Boone. One major thing I have learned was how to talk to people in an

interview, because even though you are a peer to who you’re interviewing they can still get shy and give you bleak answers. That is how I learned how to get people to talk and give better

answers in their interview, I learned if you just talk to them a little beforehand and get to know them they’re not as nervous and are more willing to talk to you.

One of the most important parts of being in yearbook is taking pictures. This year I have learned so much about picture taking. I have learned that you have to capture a moment

in time that shows how a certain person is feeling. This year I have had so much thinking of different ways to take pictures, I have been able to climb in a tree, lay on the ground, and even climb up on top of the lifeguard chair at the pool. The most important thing I’ve learned about taking pictures is you have to be adventurous. I have also learned many other things that you need to know to make a yearbook. This year I learned how important it is to stay on deadline and not get behind because when a page needs to be shipped it has to be shipped and its your responsibility to make sure it is ready in time. I also learned how important it is to have communication between your editors and staff members because if there isn’t communication then people get confused and a page can turn out wrong and have to be redone. I also learned how to become a better writer, I have learned many rules that you need to know to become a good journalism writer. I feel like my writing has improved this year because you can’t have a boring story so I learned how to make my writing more interesting to the reader. I think this class is one of the most valuable courses that a student can ever have. Although this class can be stressful it was one of my favorite because you don’t sit

around reading a textbook and taking notes you are always doing something. I have learned so much in this class because it is hands on and to learn something I

have to do it myself. This class has taught me what it will be like in the real-world when you have a job, it has given me experience to show responsibility and dedication to get things done because in a real job you have to have these things or you can get fired. I have learned more in this class than any other because

it gives you different experiences from writing to photography to interviewing, I could not have learned any of these things without this class.

I think my most significant piece of work that I did this year was my spread on superstitions. I worked really hard on this deadline because I did not do well on the deadline prior to it and I wanted to prove that I could be a

good yearbook staffer. This deadline was difficult in many different ways because I had to

find people that had a superstition or fear that wasn’t like something you see everyday. I worked really hard to find people that had unique superstitions and fears and I feel like I found some really interesting ones like the one about the boy who was in love with feet. Another

hard part was relating the fears and superstitions into a picture. I spent a lot of time talking with the people I used and asking them where and

when I could meet them. Eventually, I had a picture that worked for every person I used which I found really exciting.

Not only was I worried about proving myself, but this was the first deadline I had everything to do like pictures, captions, and

body copy. The body copy was really difficult for me the first time because I was not familiar with all the rules yet, so I had to change it and fix it until I got it right. The story took me awhile but I got it done in time. During this deadline I also had to leave town for a family emergency so I lost some days to work on it but I worked even harder so I could still make deadline. This piece was significant to me because not only did I want to prove to my teacher but I also wanted to prove to myself that I could it. This was my first real page and it is very important to me and I truly liked how it looked in the end and I really liked the pictures I took for it. I believe I grew and

my page grew from all the experiences I had during this deadline. I learned probably learned the most throughout this deadline because it involved getting accustomed to the whole process of being on staff. One thing I will never forget from this deadline was when my teacher told me she was proud of me, that is

when I knew all of my hard work payed off and that it was worth the effort.

The piece that I did, that I think could still use some work was the one about the girl who wants to become a

professional ballerina. I believe it improved a lot from the beginning especially with the story. The first time I turned in the

story I had to redo it so I worked hard to make sure that I took in everything the editor gave me to correct and that I fixed it to what it needed to be. When I turned it back in my editor told me it was much better and said thank you

for fixing what she said should be fixed. One part of this deadline that I really liked was taking

pictures of this girl dancing, I found it interesting because I love to dance so it was fun being able to take pictures

of someone who also loves to dance. The part I believe that could have used some work was the secondary coverage. I wish I would have gotten the girl to give me more details on her day to day life because what she had told me was a little bleak. Overall, I like how this page looked in the end but I wish I could have added something to make it a little more interesting. I would have liked to add more pictures because I feel like that would have really made

the page come alive.

I took this picture during one of my photo days and I really like it. I like the angle that this picture was taken, with the subject lower and the camera higher. I also like how it shows the action of the subject and how strong he is. I also believe this picture is interesting to look at because of the action that was captured.

Out of all the pictures I took in the yearbook this year, this picture of the drama students is my favorite. To get this shot I had to lay on the ground. Laying on the ground allowed me to get this angle of this group which is my favorite part of this picture. Another part of this picture that I love is the lighting, because I was facing the sky it lit up student’s faces perfectly.

I took this picture during deadline 3. I knew I wouldn’t be able to use some of the pictures I was taking in the year-book but I wanted to play around with the mirrors. What I like most about this shot is that you can see her whole body be-cause of the mirror. I also like the look of her face that is captured because you can see that she is checking to make sure she is in the correct po-sition. I thought the angle of this photo was really creative and that is why it is one of my favorites.

I believe that I was an asset to the yearbook team this year because I was very committed and worked really hard. Along

the way there were some bumpy roads and I made mistakes but I believe that I worked really hard on everything that was

given to me. I believe that I listened to and respected my editors and made the changes that they said needed to be made instead of ignoring them. Also, whenever I was not busy

with my own page I would help other staff members that needed something like getting an interview or taking a

picture. During deadlines I stay many hours after school

and a lot of the time when I’m there I am the last one to leave. I have also come in the morning to work on my deadlines. Many times this year, I have stayed after or come early to interview and take pictures of people. I always put in extra time to work on deadlines because I wanted to be on time and I knew I would not have been if I didn’t spend extra hours outside the classroom.

There have been many difficulties I have faced this year. One of the main problems I faced was being on deadline because it was easy to get behind. I handled this problem by staying after school to work on

my deadline and trying to get ahead instead of getting behind. Another challenge for me was learning the process of how every-

thing worked. The only way to really learn the process of writing body copy, taking pictures, interviewing, and writing captions was to just do it and fix what needed to be fixed. Eventually, I got used to how everything worked and was able to stay on deadline.

I learned many things from the problems I faced this year. I learned to be good at something you have to be committed to doing

your best and practice at it. That is how I learned so much this year because I kept fixing my pages and practicing different skills like

cobbing until I could remember the whole process on my own. I also learned a lot from myself and that I can do many things that I never thought I could like work and design things on a computer. One of the most important things I learned this year was communication. I would get so overwhelmed and stressed that I wouldn’t know what to do when really it was a simple matter that could be fixed just by talking to my teacher. This helped me in real life because now if I have a problem I know the best solution is to always talk to someone that can help you figure out how to fix something. At the beginning of the year I feel like I didn’t handle

these situations and stress the best way because I would just shut down and let everything pile up but by the end of the year I found things that helped me fix my problems. I learned to make lists to stay organized and on time with

deadlines and I learned to communicate with others if I have a problem.

My three goals for that I wrote down for the semester exam was to get everything in on time, schedule my time better, and use my handbook to check and make sure everything is correct My first goal to turn every thing in on time I believe I accomplished because for the last couple of deadlines I had everything turned in by deadline day. I was able to accomplish the first goal because of my second goal which was to schedule my time better. Once the new semester started I began to schedule my time better which helped me have everything done by deadline day. The third goal I believe I somewhat accomplished because I would use my handbook when I was confused with something but I would still get corrections back that I probably could have fixed with my handbook. I still plan to have the third goal as one to accomplish because I know I can still use it more.

Y6. Personality profile. 224-225.

I chose this page because I feel I have a personal connection with it because I also dance. This page was fun to make and I really like all the details you get about her day to day life. With this page I feel like you get to know her.

Y4. Academic writing. 74-75.

I did this story on how difficult the mag-nets can be and what students struggle with. What I like about this story is that it informs readers of what is expected of the students and gives quotes of how the students feel about it.

Y1. Feature writing: Student Life. 10-11

This story was about phobias that stu-dents have. My favorite part of this story is how descriptive the quotes are and how they describe how the students feel when they are scared. I feel like this story if very interesting and fun to read.
