“Pullman is a Great Place to Live.”

The statement might be simple in appearance and perhaps somewhat expected in a “welcome” letter from the Chamber of Commerce, however, much like the town itself, when the sentence is looked at in detail, a richness of beauty is discov-ered. With the help of Webster’s Online Dictionary (merriam-webster.com), I’ll prove my point...

Pullman: A railroad passenger car with specially comfortable furnishings for day or especially for night travel

Located in a string of towns along highway 195, Pullman is the “passenger car” people want to be in. Pullman thrives with one-of-a-kind local businesses, quaint café’s, and unique restau-rants. Many locals share the same story about living in Pullman, it begins with “I thought I would only be here a few years....”

Great: Remarkable in Magnitude

We may be small, but we are remarkable. Pullman is home to Washington State University, has regional health care services that are rated in the top 3% of the country, and a school district that is dedicated to edu-cating our children at the highest level. It’s not a surprise that in the past year, Bloomberg Business ranked Pullman as the best small town to raise kids in Washington State. Pullman is also home to many thriving businesses, including Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, one of the fastest growing businesses in the state, adding hundreds of jobs in the past several years.

Place: Physical Surroundings

Located in the inland Northwest, Pullman is nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of the Palouse. Expe-riencing four distinct seasons, the landscape changes its beauty throughout the year. In town, local devel-opers, thriving businesses, and the University are consistently building and remodeling keeping the town updated, yet consistent with the landscape.

Live: To be Alive

Often I refer to Pullman as a really BIG, small town. A glance at the community calendar for any given month will show concerts, plays, musicals, lectures, and other events to please any and all artistic appetites. With Washington State University calling Pullman “home”, our venues become the place for top level entertainment as well as Pac-12 sporting events. In addition, the community itself celebrates throughout the year with events such as First Down Fri-day, The 4th of July Celebration, Cabaret, and the National Lentil Festival.

Eighteen years of living on the Palouse has led me to a straightforward conclusion:

Adina Bielenberg and her family have been a part of the Palouse for over 100 years.  She was born in Pullman, is a Genesee High graduate and earned degrees in psychology and consumer

studies from the University of Idaho.  She is the Executive Assistant to the President and manages the Public Affairs Department for Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.  “I am honored to have the opportunity to represent SEL on the Pullman Chamber of Commerce board and thrilled to be actively engaged with the Pullman community”.  She currently serves on the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Association of Washing-ton Business boards.   Adina and husband Blake have two children, Mackenzie 12 and Preston 10.

Cam Brinkman is the owner of all three Subways in Pullman as well as the one in Colfax. He was born in Brook-ings, South Dakota and raised in Salem, Oregon. He has spent the last 22 years living on

the Palouse including receiving his degree from the University of Idaho. He is actively involved with corporate board for the frater-nity of Alpha Kappa Lambda, Subway FAFT board, Franchisee board of advisors, and now the Pullman Chamber of Commerce board. Cam’s wife JoReen is the office man-ager for Subway and actively involved in the community. They have two kids, Austin (7) and Isabelle (4).

ASWSU President Kyle Erdman is from Spokane, Washington where he attended John R. Rogers High School. He is a Profes-sional Writing and Rhetoric major with a minor in Digital

Technology and Culture. Heavily involved in the Greek Community, Kyle served as Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) Director of Recruitment and was the Chapter President of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. During the summer of 2010, Kyle served the Washing-ton State University community as an Alive orientation counselor for New Student Pro-grams. He believes that the transition into the WSU community is an important aspect of having a fulfilling college experience. Kyle’s time at WSU has had made him real-ize that WSU is made even greater through the experiences that take place outside of the classroom. As ASWSU President, Kyle plans

to focus on the interests of the student body and is excited to inspire students to be more involved in their community. He encourages every student to realize the importance of an education, and the importance of self-actualizing while at WSU.

Carol Chipman is a co-owner of Chipman and Taylor Chevrolet.  She was born and raised in Mountain Home, Idaho, and graduated from the University of Idaho.  She has lived in Pullman since she

and her husband purchased the Brown and Holter Chevy-Olds dealership in 1976. Carol has served on several community boards and committees, and is currently beginning her third term as a Director of the Cham-ber of Commerce Board.  She loves the unique beauty of the rolling hills, and the progressive, vibrant environment present in Pullman due to the university. Carol sees the Chamber as vital for the health of Pullman, and is happy to contribute to it.

Doug Cox graduated from WSU with a degree in Ag Busi-ness (’93) after growing up on a family farm in Hay, WA.  Doug is employed as a Vice President & Commercial Lender at Co-lumbia Bank and has provided

lending services in Pullman since 1999.   Pullman activities include Kiwanis, Palouse Discovery Science Center board President, Pullman Civil Service Commission & WSU student athlete mentoring.  His hobbies include hunting, scuba, snow & water ski-ing.  Doug’s wife Amy works in the College of Education and together they have 2 kids, Hunter (13) and Reagan (10) attending LMS & Sunnyside Elementary.

Marie Dymkoski, Executive Director, has lived in the small community of Palouse for 25 years.  She comes to the Chamber with many different job experiences,

and describes herself as a “Jane of all trades”. Marie, along with her husband Mike, has four children, Jennifer, Kristin, Matthew, and Mitchell, and three grandchildren. Ma-rie is involved in Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, Palouse Audubon Society, Wa-Id Symphony, Palouse Knowledge Corridor, Palouse Com-munity Center and the WSU Student-Ath-lete Mentor Program. Staff Responsibilities: She is responsible to the Board of Directors for the full range of activities — coordina-tion of the program of work; organizational

structure and procedures; motivation of volunteering; income and expenditures; maintenance of membership; employment, training and supervision of staff; interpreta-tion of policy; maintenance of quarters; and long and short range planning. Marie enjoys the work of the chamber and believes that the Palouse is the best place to live, work and do business. “I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be” says Marie.

J. Thomas Handy Jr, is a Former President of the Pullman Chamber of Com-merce Board of Directors and owner of Paradise Creek Brew-ery, and Landmark Property Development. Born in Wiscon-

sin, Tom has resided in Pullman for over 28 years. He appreciates the small town atmo-sphere with the mix of big city influences that Pullman offers. Tom says that Pullman is not just a great place to raise and educate children; it is also a friendly business com-munity that has a can-do forward thinking city administration. This is his ninth year on the board, and Tom says that the chamber gives him an opportunity to be active in an organization that truly makes a positive impact on the prosperity of Pullman and the surrounding area.

Colleen Harrington is an attorney and partner in the law firm of Irwin, Myklebust, Savage and Brown, P.S., where she specializes in civil litigation. She attended Washington State University for her under-

graduate degree and following graduation, managed the Fairco gas station on Grand Avenue for several years. Colleen moved to the Bay Area and attended the University of San Francisco Law School and graduated in 1986. Following graduation, she and her husband moved back to Pullman. Since her return, Colleen has been very active in the Pullman Community; she has had two six year terms with the United Way of Pullman Board of Directors, serving as campaign chair and board president. Colleen has also served two terms as the president of the Whitman County Humane Society and she is a past president of the Pullman Cham-ber of Commerce.

Charlene Jasper owns Daily Grind Espresso, LLC and Licks Unlimited and is currently serving her fourth term as a Pullman Chamber of Commerce Board of Director member. She is originally from

Walla Walla, and has lived in Pullman for 29 years. Charlene appreciates the small town community spirit and the opportunities that Pullman offers her to get involved. Being a member of the business community requires an obligation on her part, she says, to give back to the community. Being on the Board of Directors allows Charlene to contribute to the experiences that both the business com-munity and residents in Pullman enjoy.

Former President Glenn Johnson is the Mayor of Pullman and a Profes-sor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU. One of his other jobs is serving as the “Voice of the

Cougars”.  Glenn is in his 33rd year as the public address announcer for all WSU football and men’s basketball games.  He is also a past Chamber President. Glenn serves on the executive team, as a former president, and on the board of the Asso-ciation of Washington Cities.  AWC is an organization that represents all 281 cit-ies in Washington.  He is also chair of the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Board of Directors; on the board of Municipal Research and Service Center, Seattle; the Community Action Center for Whitman County; and Washington State Association of Broadcasters. He volunteers on a number of chamber committees—Fourth of July (chair); Artesians; Government Affairs; and volunteers with Lentil festival and Cabaret.

Henry D. JohnstonHenry Johnston is the Customer Relations Manager for Wysup Chrysler JeepDodge in Pullman. As an area resident for nearly 10 years, Henry has been

affiliated, one way or another, with the Pull-man Chamber of Commerce since2005 and has worked in Pullman since 2008 when he was hired as generalmanager of RadioShack on Bishop Boule-vard, a position he held until joiningthe Wysup team in 2010. Henry lives in Moscow with his partner of sevenyears, Alex Irwin who also works in Pull-man at SEL. Henry enjoys all theactivities that the Palouse region has to offer and is humbled to beselected to serve on the Pullman Chamber board.  

Paul Kimmell currently serves as the Regional Business Manager for Avista Corpora-tion.  He was the former ex-ecutive director of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce from 2001-2006 as well as serving

three terms as a Latah County Commission-er.  Kimmell has a BS in Geography/Urban Planning from Illinois State University and did graduate work in land management at the University of Idaho.  He presently serves as chair of the Inland Northwest Partners, president of the Latah Economic Develop-ment Council, board member to the Inland Northwest Economic Alliance, Pullman United Way and past chair of the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee. Paul is married to Constance and has three children grown children.

Allison Levenseller is the Property Director of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites and is also a past Chamber President. Allison has lived in Pullman for over 20 years and she appreciates the very family

oriented community that has allowed her and her husband to both have careers and stay close to home. Although her two chil-dren are now in college they loved growing up in Pullman and had fabulous experiences at our excellent schools.  Allison enjoys be-ing a board member as it gives her wonder-ful opportunities to share information and her ideas with others. Allison also serves on the United Way Board, Palouse Marketing Committee and the Lodging Tax Advisory Board.

Chuck Morrow and his wife Stacy have lived in the Palouse since June of 1994.  He is currently the store manager of Crimson & Gray where he has worked since the opening of the store in August of 2004. 

Prior to that, Chuck worked at the Bookie on campus for ten years as the textbook department manager and later Book Divi-sion manager.  Chuck feels that the Pullman Chamber of Commerce is the heart of the community and is excited to a part of the board of directors.

Former President Theresa Myers is the co-owner of Myers Auto Rebuild and Towing. She is from Kent, and has lived in Pullman for 33 years. Theresa loves the small town lifestyle in Pullman, and

she adds that it is a great place to raise kids, due to the great schools. There is a variety of

cultural and sporting events in the region, and she enjoys being so close to outdoor recreation opportunities and likes to watch the seasons change. As a member of Board of Directors, she finds it meaningful to help build a vital economic base for the citizens of Pullman, and to promote Pullman and the region as a great place to live and do business. Theresa says that it is important to educate people that Pullman has many great businesses and that they don’t need to go out of town to find what they need, as it is offered right here in town.

Marty Northcroft is the Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing at Washington State University. A graduate of WSU class of 1996, Marty is no stranger to Pullman. He returned to Pullman in August

of 2012 after spending the past five years at the University of Virginia and one year at the University of Oklahoma. Prior to his previous positions he worked for the Seattle Mariners as the Marketing Manager from 2000 until 2004 and was also the Assistant Director of Marketing at WSU from 2004 to 2006. Marty and his wife TyAnne have two sons, Caleb (6) and Brayden (2). They are happy to be back in Pullman as it brings them closer to extended family residing in the northwest. 

Tony Poston is the owner of College Hill Custom Threads, a custom apparel design com-pany. Originally from Sand-point, Idaho, Tony graduated from Washington State Uni-versity in 2007 after earning a

degree in Political Science/Pre-Law. During his time as an undergrad, Tony was active in ASWSU, The Inter-fraternity Council and The Student Entertainment board and fell in love with WSU and the City of Pullman and hoped to return in the future. The oppor-tunity finally presented itself in 2011, when he and two others founded College Hill Custom Threads near campus. Tony believes that the Chamber of Commerce can help show that Pullman is not only a great college town but the perfect place to raise a family and start a business. By helping coordinate fun and exciting events he wants to help bridge the gap between local businesses and WSU students, showing that both can work together to benefit from each other.

Bobbie Ryder is the Senior Campus Planner for Washington State University. As a Landscape Architect and Planner, she works with major and minor capital projects, campus master plans, and

XXX • 2013 Pullman Chamber of Commerce 5environmental review. Bobbie is also a board member of the Pullman Civic Trust and the College Hill Association. She was raised in a Navy military family and moved from one coast to the other growing up. She and her husband, Karl Johanson, have lived on the Palouse for 34 years and raised four children in the exceptional Pullman Public School system. Bobbie believes that the heart of economic development starts with creating an atmosphere where people want to live e.g., a vibrant downtown, attractive and affordable housing, good schools, access to medical care, a safe community, cultural events, grocery stores and shopping, and good employment opportunities; all quali-ties readily found it Pullman.

Past Chamber President Gary Schell is a Broker with Beasley Realty, co-owner of Evergreen Storage and GDS Properties and takes pride in promoting Pullman as a great place to live and do busi-

ness. Gary appreciates the friendly people in Pullman and the uniqueness of living in a small community combined with the advantages of a large University.  Gary finds his position on the Board of Direc-tors to be meaningful since he enjoys being involved in the community and helping out whenever possible.  He is also involved in Rotary, Pullman Hospital Foundation, Church activities, Fraternity advising and of course watching Cougar sports events. Gary and his wife Sue, an elementary teacher, find Pullman a great place to live, work, and do business while raising their family.

Paul Sturm is the superin-tendent of the Pullman School District and has been a member of the chamber since moving to Pullman in 2002. He is a current member and past chair of the Artesians and continues

to be involved with the Government Affairs committee.  Paul and his wife, Nadine, love Pullman and Eastern Washington with its diverse climate and environments, along with the array of outdoor activities, and arts, entertainment, and athletic events.  Both of them believe that the Palouse is a premium place to live and work. Being a member of the Chamber and the Chamber Board is a way to learn about the perspec-tive of the business community. Paul views the School District’s role in providing learn-ing opportunities for students and families to be a vital element of the quality of life and for the economic development of the area.  Membership in the Chamber and on the Board is a satisfying way to give back to the community for its generous commitment to

its schools and other city and county service to families.

Joan Swensen is a native of The Palouse where she was raised on a farm between Mos-cow and Genesee. Her 20’s were spent in the Bay Area (Califor-nia) then back to Moscow and except for four years in Pennsyl-

vania as a private chef, she has been doing restaurants since ‘81, starting with the Main Street Deli. Joan has been at Swilly’s as Exec. Chef since ‘95 and purchased the restaurant in 2003. She recently served on the board of the UofI Prichard Art Gallery. When not playing restaurant, Joan can be found riding her new dressage horse, painting and collecting art, collecting wine for her private cellar, tending her perennial and vegetable garden, throwing dinner parties for friends, and hanging out with her dog Kisha, Tigger, Winnie and Fritz, her feline roommates. Joan really enjoys serving on the board of the Pullman Chamber with some of her favorite customers and friends!

Mike Waite is a past presi-dent of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and is a Financial Representative for Northwest-ern Mutual Financial Network. He is from Weiser, Idaho and has lived in the Palouse Region

for over 20 years. Mike enjoys the small town hospitality of Pullman, with the ame-nities typically found only in larger cities. He finds that being a member of the Board of Directors is meaningful because it gives him the opportunity to be proactive in the community, and to promote Pullman as a great place to live and do business.

Former Chamber President Susan Weed (1996-97) is co-owner and Office Manager for NewsTalk1150 KQQQ-AM and HitRadio104.3 KHTR ra-dio stations. She is a long term member of the Chamber’s

Board of Directors, and also serves as Presi-dent of the Pullman School District Board of Directors and as Chair of the Pullman Civil Service Commission and is Past President of the Pullman Regional Hospital Auxiliary.  She was born and raised in Seattle and met husband Bill while attending the University of Washington.  The Weeds have owned and operated Pullman’s radio stations since De-cember 1974. Susan says that Pullman has been a wonderful place to raise their 3 kids, and she loves going to businesses and know-ing that she can trust the person behind the counter.  She believes that if you care deeply about something, like she does about

our community, then it is important be get involved. Being a Board member gives Susan the satisfaction of knowing that she is helping to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business!

Former President Pat Wright is another long term member of the Board of Directors, and, another former Chamber President. Since her retirement as General Man-ager of The Bookie, Pat has

remained active in the Pullman community.  She enjoys working part-time at Neill’s Flowers and Gifts and on the Pullman City Council.  In addition to being a Chamber of Commerce Board member, Pat is Past Presi-dent of Pullman Regional Hospital Auxil-iary, is the chair of the Auxiliary Annual Tea Committee and also a member of the Pull-man Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and President of the Pullman Edu-cation Foundation. Pat has lived in Pullman since 1975. She is originally from New York, and moved to California before residing in Pullman. She says that Pullman is a won-derful, safe place to raise a family, to enjoy the many amenities offered through the university and to appreciate the closeness and warmth of a small community in terms of living, working, and doing business. By being a Board member, Pat says that she has the opportunity to promote Pullman and all that it offers, and is a way for her to develop strong business relationships that provide a gateway to participate in different projects and activities that truly make a difference in the community.

Mike Yates was the 2012 Chamber President, and is the President of Very Cool Spaces, LLC, a Pullman based business and property devel-opment company.  Primarily focused on the redevelopment

and adaptive re-use of old buildings in the downtown core, Mike is the co-founder and consultant of several companies and developments in the Pullman area, includ-ing; BellTower Concert House & Event Venue, Market Square Lofts & Retail, Combine Mall Building and Prune Orchard-Details for Living (gift store).  Originally from Seattle, and working in the semicon-ductor industry, Mike, his wife Debbie, and their two daughters moved to Pullman for the improved lifestyle and sense of commu-nity it offers. Now after 15 years, he points to Pullman’s active business community, excellent public schools, and friendly people as the reason he and Debbie plan to remain in Pullman.

AdvocacyThe Pullman Chamber of Commerce is your voice to government in Pullman, Olympia and Washington D.C. We concern ourselves with issues that impact business and the livability of the Pullman community at large. We work closely with City and County officials and have a seat on the Association of Washington Business Board. When you join the Pullman Chamber of Commerce you are being heard. 

Networking The Pullman Chamber of Commerce provides numerous opportunities to meet other busi-ness leaders in our community.

General Membership Luncheons Normally scheduled the second Tuesday of each month from 12 –1 p.m., these catered events are opportunities to mingle with other business leaders, learn about the Pullman community in general, or learn about current business issues. Plan to promote your business during Soapbox time, allowing you up to sixty seconds to highlight your business or organiza-tion. Sponsor a luncheon and receive addition-al opportunity to promote your business.

Business After HoursThese events provide opportunities for host businesses to show off their facilities and prod-ucts, as well as an informal time of socializing and “catching up with your fellow Chamber members.” Food and beverages are provided by the host business. 

Chamber WebsiteThe Pullman Chamber of Commerce web-site contains a full directory of our members including business name, address, phone number, and web link. Members are listed alphabetically, as well as by business category. Our website receives thousands of hits a day, increasing the visibility of our member busi-nesses.

Chamber Email NewsThis weekly email keeps members up to date about various Chamber activities and projects, as well as to alert areas of criminal activ-ity affecting members. Members can submit information on upcoming events or special programs.

Pullman Community UpdateMembers may submit information about their business for inclusion on the Chamber pages of the Pullman Community Update. This newsletter is sent to more than 14,000 city resi-dents. Showcase new product lines, business changes, and your upcoming events. Informa-tion must be supplied 30 days in advance of the month you wish to have your information appear. 

Membership Directory This printed guide is produced annually and lists all Chamber members by business cat-egory, as well as alphabetically. The directory also includes community profile informa-tion. It is sent to those requesting relocation information, is available to in-person visitors, and delivered to fellow Chamber of Commerce Members.  In addition, the 2013 Membership Directory will be inserted into the Moscow Pullman Daily News for distribution.

Business Card and Literature DisplayThe Chamber of Commerce offers a business card and literature display in our 24-hour accessible foyer. We also offer space inside the office. Hundreds of people visit the office each month providing excellent exposure for your business. 

Mailing LabelsMembers can purchase the entire membership mailing list on printed labels for $25. Non-members can purchase the lists for $50 on labels. Excel file for one time use is available for $50 to members only.

Visitor and Relocation Inquiries ListNeed new leads? Our visitor and relocation inquiries list is an excellent way to target either new residents or visitors to our community. For $10 each month you can purchase either an email list or mailing labels, so you can direct market your business.

Relocation Packet InsertsChamber members can supply brochures, fliers, or coupons designed for new residents to the Palouse region for inclusion in reloca-tion packets. This is a free service for Chamber members. Members need to provide 100 in-serts at a time to the Chamber office. Informa-tion should be no larger than one sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper (can be folded). 

Seminars and Workshops Frequently, the Chamber sponsors workshops to help equip you in your business dealings or to update you on changing regulations.  

Bulk Mail Stamp The US Post Office offers reduced prices on presorted bulk mail if certain requirements are met. The Chamber’s bulk mail permit number is available for members to use.  

Certificates of OriginThis official stamp provides proof to busi-nesses and governments that the goods being shipped were produced in the United States. Many international firms request such proof. 

Grand Openings and Ribbon CuttingsThese events are provided for new members as a welcome to the community and are also available for business members who are ex-panding or dedicating new facilities.

Small Business ServiceThe Chamber has a large network of business connections. Whether you are looking for sites, developers or counseling, the Chamber can point you in the right direction. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce has devel-oped the following committees to aid in the ef-fort to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business. New members, thoughts and creative ideas are always welcome. Agricultural Business Committee Ron Wachter The Agriculture Business Committee fosters issues pertaining to the agricultural commu-nity. The committee supports the need to grow and develop the agricultural industry. Projects: 4th of July BBQ, Farm City Day Lun-cheon with Colfax Chamber in January, Port Tour in November, Fair sales.

Artesian Committee Bill Skavdahl Members of this committee act as representa-tives at ground breakings, grand openings, dedications and other events. Membership is based on service to the chamber. Members have the option of serving on a recruitment or retention team. Meeting Time: The Last Monday of the Month, Noon at Fireside Grille.

Business Development and Pro-motion Committee Charlene Jasper This committee provides the opportunity for the business community to discuss items and events of interest or concern. The group also works to facilitate promotion opportunities for the retail sector. Meeting Time: Second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the Daily Grind Coffee House in downtown Pullman.

Cabaret Marie Dymkoski Cabaret is the major fund raising event for the chamber. Each spring, this formal affair has live and silent auctions, live music, dinner and dancing. This group is always looking for people with a creative flair.

First Down Fridays Charlene Jasper First Down Friday Night encourages visitors to come and enjoy Pullman for the weekend.  A fun, family event held on Friday night before WSU home games. The committee creates, plans, and coordinates a free block party including inflatables, food, music, beer garden and more. Get in on the ground floor creating a “Wave the Flag” tradition. Meeting Time: Third Wednesday of each month, 9:00am, Daily Grind Coffee House in downtown Pullman.

Government Affairs & Economic Development Francis Benjamin This committee considers reviews and acts on local, state and national issues that directly af-fect the Pullman business community. It strives to keep members informed of these issues. Business growth and retention is the priority of this committee. This includes; encouraging business retention, recruiting new business and the continual quest for business growth and opportunities. This committee meets regu-larly via conference call with area legislators during legislative session. Projects: Legislative agenda, seminars, moni-toring current government regulations and issues. Meeting Time: The Third Friday of Each Month, 7:30 a.m., SEL Event Center (group meets twice monthly during legislative session)

4th of July Glenn Johnson This group plans and coordinates strategies for this great community celebration that is held each year in Sunnyside Park. Activities include fireworks, live entertainment, BBQ, conces-sions, children’s games and more. Meeting Time: Three meetings each year as announced.

National Lentil Festival Amberly Boone This two-day, community event is held in late August each year. Activities include: Live En-tertainment, Grand Parade, 5k Fun Run, Lentil Lane Food Court, Lentil Gallery Arts & Crafts, Microbrewery Tasting Tent, Lentil Land Chil-dren’s Area, Wine Tasting, Free Lentil Chili, Cook-Off Competition, Sports Tournaments and more. The “Lentil Lady” always likes to see new faces, hear fresh ideas, and welcomes a challenge. Meeting Time: The Second Thursday of each month, 5:30 p.m., Chamber Office

Palouse Tourism & Marketing Gina Taruscio-Moscow In conjunction with the Moscow chamber, WSU and U of I representatives, this group works on increasing tourism to the Palouse through joint marketing activities. Projects: This committee works on develop-ing yearly promotional materials and activi-ties including: Visitor’s Guide, Advertising Campaigns, Brochures, Excursion Tours, and workshops. Meeting Time: Three times a year. Contact the Chamber for details.

Pullman-WSU Relations Marie Dymkoski Working closely with WSU, ASWSU and chamber members to continue strong relations with students/businesses in Pullman.  Where ‘there’s unity in the community’ in bridging the gap between campus and the community of Pullman.  The committee works on creating events that bring the students into the com-munity and the community involvement with WSU.  The group has worked with WSU Ath-letics to put up several hundred Cougar Flags around town and in shops.  ASWSU’s “30 Days of Pullman” in April 2013 will bring students into area businesses that will reward them with special incentives!  Learn more by calling the chamber at 334-3565 Meeting Time: Third Wednesday of each month, 3:00pm, Daily Grind Coffee House in downtown Pullman.

The Founding of PullmanAnd other historical selections from the community history of Pullman, Washington

The Founding of Pullman In September of 1877, Daniel G. McKenzie of Kansas brought his family West and settled in the area of the Palouse known as Three Forks. The Bolin Farr family, and several others, came along a short time later, and set up their homesteads next to McKenzie. The early settlers desired a post office, so in June of 1881, Orville Stewart suggested the name of Pullman, after the great sleeping car magnate. The United States Postal Service was a trifle slow in granting the request, so Mr. Stewart ran the Post Office with $100 of his own money as a gift to the community. Six months later, the Postal Service established an official Post Office at the town of Pullman. With great ambition, the early settlers set out to build Pullman. As a result of their efforts, the town came out of public ownership in 1881. With title to the land secured, the town fathers platted the land, and proceeded to begin in earnest their efforts to develop the town of Pullman.

The Early Years Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) Pullman has a rich history going back to the 1870s when the area east of Colfax was first opened for settlement. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street. In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was

rejected by the Post Office Department. The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. When informed of the town’s action, railroad magnate George Pullman reportedly donated $50 to start a city library. Soon after this, Daniel McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow to the new town and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located initially on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew rapidly. It incorporated in 1888. After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition amongthe towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College of Science and School of Agriculture was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.

Looking For A Site “George A. Black, S.B. Conover, and A.H. Smith, the committee appointed by Acting Governor Laughton to locate the agricultural college and school of science, have made a tour of the counties that are in the race for that institution.” “At 4:20 o’clock in the afternoon they stepped off the regular freight on the platform of the Pullman depot. The kid band in uniform played soul-stirring selections and headed the throng of commissioners and citizens to Main Street.” “The commissioners had many compliments for Pullman, its natural resources, fine stores, and store buildings,

and it is believed that an impression for good was made upon their minds.” “Two sites, the Bedder and the Farr property, both adjoining the town, were shown to the commission, and no mistake will be made by them if they locate the college on either.”

The Four Hills of Pullman A distinct feature of Pullman is the four hills that surround it, playing a large part in the way the town has been developed. To the southwest is Sunnyside Hill. The first homes to receive the gentle warmth of the morning sun are those near Gladish School on Sunnyside Hill. To the southeast is Pioneer Hill, originally known as Methodist Hill. Actually, the Methodist Church building, Pullman’s first, was built on Sunnyside Hill in 1882. The Congregational church was built on Methodist Hill. But, the Methodist minister and many of the church members, such as the McKenzies and the Squires, made their homes on Methodist Hill. Old time “shouting” prayer meetings were held in these homes. The hill to the northeast, now College Hill, was known as Mechanics Hill before and after the new college, Washington Agriculture College and School of Science, opened the doors of its first building, Crib, in 1892. To the northwest lies Military Hill, given its name from the Military Academy, Pullman’s prep school of 1891. The school served the educational needs of Pullman’s young men for four years, after which it burned to the ground. Major Walker’s home, N.W. 325 True, is among the few remaining homes of the faculty.

Reaney ParkGray Lane & Lentil Lane (1.64 acres) Home of the National Lentil Festival and the Reaney Park summer concert series, this park contains outdoor pools, a gazebo, playground area, picnic tables, a BBQ area and a horseshoe pit.

Kruegel Park Side & South Street (7.92 acres) This park was donated to the city in 1958 and contains a spacious picnic area, BBQ area, full sized tennis courts, expansive playground, small football field, baseball diamond, soccer field and volleyball standards.

Sunnyside Park Cedar Street (25 acres) Home to Pullman’s annual 4th of July community celebration. This park contains a picnic and bbq shelter that overlooks 2 ponds and a waterfall. The facilities include: tennis courts, baseball diamond, volleyball standards, Frisbee golf course, and walking trails. The city’s garden plots are also located here.

Lawson Gardens Derby Street Near Dilke (13 Acres) The beautiful formal gardens include a reflecting pool, gazebo, seasonal flowers, rose and perennial gardens. This lovely park is popular for summer weddings and may be rented by calling the City of Pullman Parks & Recreation Department at 509-338-3227.

Terre View Park 325 NW Terre View Dr. (3.25 Acres) There is a BBQ and picnic shelter located near the children’s playground facilities, public restroom. There is also a wetland pond area perfect for bird watching.

McGee Park Lybecker Street off of Stadium Way (3.04 Acres) There is a BBQ and picnic shelter located near children’s playground facilities. There is also a baseball diamond and a fenced basketball court.

Military Hill Park End of Hall Drive (25 Acres) Adjoining Pullman High School, there are 6 tennis courts, 2 baseball diamonds, playfields, playgrounds, a picnic shelter and BBQ area.

Harrison Tot Lot Harrison Street (.233 Acres) This park is designed for very young children and includes a shaded family picnic area.

Conservation Park 799 NW Darrow Street The City’s old nursery made a transformation to a non-improved natural setting. Gravel and dirt walking trails lead to a bench overlooking the Palouse River. A great place to jog or walk your dog.

Itani Park 950 SW Crestview Dr. Donated to the City in 1997 by Rafik and Mary Sue Itani, this natural linear park has a large number of trees and shrubs planted. A Gazebo and gravel pathways make this a great place to walk your dog or birdwatch.

Woodcraft Park South Street (.84 Acres) This is a peaceful picnic area with beautiful shade trees in the southeast part of town.

Spring Street Park located at Spring Street and Pearl (2.75 acres) This park includes a skateboard facility, expansive lawn, and public restroom. Benches located along the tranquil Palouse River for patrons to enjoy a quiet moment alone. Links to the Chipman Trail.

City Playfield Riverview Road (8.66 Acres) This is the main facility for Pullman’s summer sports activities. It contains the city baseball diamonds, a jogging track, exercise stations, volleyball standards, batting cage and picnic tables.

City of Pullman RV Park Riverview Road & South Street (24 spaces) All 24 spaces have full water, electricity, sewer and cable hook-ups. It is open from April to November. A few tent spaces are also available. Contact the City of Pullman to make reservations 334-4555.

Bill Chipman Palouse TrailBetween Pullman and Moscow along HWY 270 The seven miles of smooth pathway is for all ages and abilities and connects Pullman and Moscow. This trail is great for walking, biking, skating or jogging and is open dawn to dusk year-round.

The National Lentil Festival The 25th Annual National Lentil Festival will be held August 16 & 17, 2013. This fun-filled event includes a street fair, 400 gallons of free lentil chili, live music, arts and crafts, food court, Legendary Lentil Cook-off, kid’s activi-ties, several sporting events, and lots of lentils. Activities For Seniors The Senior Center is located in City Hall, and offers hot meals on Mondays and Fridays each week at 11:45am.
