darker side.Hordes of

Indian jewelry imitators

are flocking to the market

with phony jewelry.

Dealers are besieged by imitators selling

non-Indian made,but Indian style jewelry.

Imitation jewelry is taking its toll on Indian craftsmen.

In the time it takes a Navajo silversmith to

hand-fashion a squashblossom necklace,

literally hundreds can be stamped out on

assembly line machines.

Most dealers clearly indicate the

imitation jewelry, but some don’t.

Ultimately it is the unknowledgeable

buyer who gets stung.

The often-repeated advice bears repeating

again: Buy from a reputable dealer and ask for a

certificate of authenticity with each item purchased.

If the dealer refuses to supply the
