This year’s Annual Report highlights the pioneering spirit that has been the hallmark of Sholom since its inception over 100 years ago. In the next few pages, you will read about how recognizing a need and determination to meet it has established Sholom as the premier senior care facility that it is today.

All of the over 1,000 daily residents, patients, and clients who are served by Sholom in our accommo-dations and through our wide array of services are treated with a vigilant dedication to quality care. This dedication to our clients, residents, and patients is backed and supported by 950 professional staff, by families, volunteers, Boards, Committees, and Auxiliary, and has earned us a fi ve-star rating in nursing home care.

Sholom and our community have so much to be proud of—the employees who provide outstanding care, our beautiful facilities, our programs and activ-ities, and most importantly, the organization’s com-mitment to the residents and their families.

As Sholom grows and exceeds expectations, the needs continue to grow along with it. As you can see from the chart on page 12, admissions have increased from 117 in 1986 to 1,076 last year. We have added on and built new facil-ities to accommodate this growth, but now the older structures are in need of replace-ment, renovation, and repair. In order to maintain the quality care we have become

known for, Sholom is reliant upon your support to meet these growing needs. On behalf of the entire Sholom organization, I thank each of you and all of you for your support. Just as pioneers look toward the future, Sholom looks ahead with anticipation and energy. Together with YOU, we can continue that pioneering spirit that began back in 1908, to provide a bright future for our residents.

Over the last year, the Sholom board, in collabora-tion with leadership staff, has been actively review-ing many state-of-the-art senior care options and concepts to assist us in visualizing what the future of senior care will be for Sholom and our elders.

Currently, Sholom offers a vast menu of pro-grams and services within our accommodations, while growing our community-based programs; i.e., meal programs, hospice services, our newly certifi ed and licensed Medicare homecare, and our rehabili-tation fi tness programs throughout the Twin Cities. These activities create value within and for our com-munity as our clients’ needs evolve while lessening our dependence on government funding.

We remain committed to providing the best pos-sible care to our residents and guests, valuing our employees, continuing our growing fi nancial stabil-ity and creating a long-lasting, sustainable future for Sholom and the seniors we serve.

With these goals as our number-one priority, the Sholom Board of Directors has approved a motion requesting the Sholom Foundation explore the devel-opment of a capital campaign to improve the oper-ations and living arrangements on our Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus and some additions to our Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. Also, a motion was approved to explore an endowment initia-tive within our communities in order to reposition our assets to best serve our pres-ent and future community.

We will keep you well informed as we explore these objectives for the purpose of ensuring Sholom’s commitment to the continuing health and well-being of the seniors we serve and our communities emerg-ing population of retirees who depend upon us for their evolving senior care needs.

Micki Rosen’s life has been full of

transformations and pioneering moments.

By Libby Goldstein Parker

orn and raised into an Ortho-

dox Jewish family in Detroit,

Micki sought adventure and

independence as a young

woman by heading west, only

a single suitcase in hand,

first to California. She was

then drawn to the Pacific

Northwest by the mountains

and eventually settled in Portland (she did climb Mt. Hood, among others!), where she met her hus-band, Sidney Rosen,z”l and raised their family of two sons and two daughters there. Always a lover of art and music, Micki especially enjoyed listening to her hus-band play piano and sing; he even wrote a love song for her and per-formed it at their wedding.

Over the years, Micki has transformed herself from moun-tain climber to stay-at-home mother to law school student to

Director at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. In the early 1970s, she became the first woman stockbroker at Smith Barney in Portland, Oregon, on the New York Stock Exchange, working hard to make sure that all four of her children could attend col-lege. Her young-est daughter, Susanne, said, “There used to be stockbroker meet-ings in the ‘men only bars’ of pri-vate clubs, and my mom used to

sit outside the door on a chair listening in

with the handouts. She never made a big deal about it, as she believed eventually they would catch on that women should be included.

Shortly thereafter, they changed the

locations of the meetings so that my mom could join in.” It seems that pioneer Micki has done it all!

Having spent most of her adult

life on the West Coast, Micki moved about a year and a half ago to Sholom’s Enhanced Assisted Living program at the Roitenberg Family Assisted Living Residence in St. Louis Park. In this pro-

gram, Micki is able to receive skilled nursing care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the comfort of her own apart-ment. More than just traditional assisted living, Micki is receiv-ing the person-alized attention and care that

are the hallmarks of Sholom’s Enhanced Assisted Living pro-gram. It’s worth mentioning that Micki was actually the pioneer of this program too. Much as she did as a young girl heading west, Micki packed up one suitcase and moved out of the house she inhabited and loved for 50 years and became the fi rst resident of the Enhanced Assisted Living program when it opened in mid-2012. A major transformation like that could shake even the most steady personality, but Micki’s pioneering attitude was, “Well, someone has got to try it out!”

Much as she did as a young girl heading west, Micki packed

up one suitcase and became the first

resident of Sholom’s Enhanced Assisted

Living program when it opened in mid-2012.

5

Page 6: 2013 Sholom Annual Report

Micki has always empha-sized the importance of family, and even though the Sholom staff and volunteers are always there to lend a hand, she acknowledges how wonderful it is to have her daughter nearby and her other children visiting as often as pos-sible. She often thinks about her

four lovely grandchildren as well. With such an incredible support system, Micki knows she is being respected as she ages with dignity, and as a result, she continues to get much out of life.

As Micki reported, when her daughter Susanne moved her to

Minnesota from Oregon, she was quite ill. With the unmatched skill and compassion of the Sholom staff, her health has improved, and she now enjoys participat-ing in the many activities offered throughout the campus, including exercising with the in-house Live 2 B Healthy® program, personal training, and attending religious services and all outings to muse-ums or cultural events. Micki has transformed yet again, becoming a vital and contributing member of the Sholom community. Other times, she enjoys the solitude. As she says, “Sometimes I like to just sit around and think about the life I led and the things I enjoyed.”

Basking in the sunlight that is streaming through her nicely appointed one-bedroom apart-ment on the Ackerberg Family

Sholom Home West Campus in St. Louis Park, and surrounded by her daughter Nancy’s beau-tiful artwork and treasured pho-tos of family members, Micki’s eyes dance as she recounts her life experiences. She is graceful, grateful, and seems to enjoy vis-iting with anyone— family, vol-unteers, friends. They, along with the Sholom staff, have helped her continue to transform at this stage in her life.

Leaning forward in her chair, Micki confides, “The way they care for you in this place…you can’t get that kind of care any-where else. Besides, I’ve been in fi ve different places and the food here is the best! I wait all week for the matzo ball soup!

icki Rosen’s story on page four of this report is one of an accomplished pioneer, and her spirit parallels the spirit that founded the senior liv-ing campuses we call Sholom. It was in that same pioneer-ing spirit that Sholom’s roots started with the Daughters of Abraham, a group of ded-icated Jewish women who, in the early 1900s, pur-chased the Banning home-stead at 75 Wilkins Street. This was to be known as the Jewish Home for the Aged of St. Paul. It served 20 persons, admitting men over age 65 and women over 60. Applicants having fi nancial assets or property were required to assign it over to the Home.

Plans were made to expand from this location to Midway Parkway in 1916. In 1917, prop-erty was purchased and a foun-dation was laid, but due to lack of funds, the building was not opened until 1923, and the name

was changed to the Jewish Home for the Aged of the Northwest. Initially, only the “well” aged were admitted.

The Daughters of Abraham never gave up the idea of a Jewish hospital to care for the “ill” aged. After attempting to finance a kosher kitchen at Miller Hospital and being refused, they purchased and operated a house at 45 South St. Albans Street in St. Paul, to be

used as a convalescence home with the blessing of the United Jewish Fund and Council (UJFC).

In 1958, through the gen-erosity of George Kaplan, the Sholom Home on Randolph street near Snelling was built. It was designated to pro-vide care and shelter for the

chronically ill. This was a long-needed haven, and the culmination of the dream of the Daughters of Abraham, who were the core of a very active Auxiliary. The 40-bed facility was eventually found to be economically unfeasi-

ble to operate. After intensive study, the

UJFC, Minneapolis Federation for Jewish Service and Duluth Federation, as well as the boards of the George Kaplan Sholom Home and the Jewish Home for the Aged approved the merger of the two homes to be known as Sholom Home, Inc. Thanks to the gener-osity of Rose and Jay Phillips, a

two-story addition to the Midway Parkway building was completed in 1966, and named the Phillips Addition, allowing 29 residents to be transferred from The Kaplan Home.

St. Paul was becoming estab-lished, but the “West” had not yet been pioneered! After complet-ing a series of studies, it was deter-mined there was a need for senior services in Minneapolis. In 1990, groundbreaking began on a 170-bed nursing facil-ity in St. Louis Park that became known as Sholom Home West located on the Norman and Lisette Ackerberg Family Campus.

There was also a real need for market-rate and HUD-subsidized independent housing that could provide tenants with a comforting sense of Jewish tradition, so Menorah West and Knollwood Place Apartments were built on the West campus. These gave tenants a host of opportuni-ties to remain active in the com-munity yet live independently. As the need grew for assisted liv-ing, Roitenberg Family Assisted Living Residence was added right next door. Such close proximity to Knollwood Place meant tenants

could stay connected with their friends, family, synagogues, and community involvement as they moved to a new level of care. In 2012, Enhanced Assisted Living was introduced at Roitenberg, which allowed tenants to remain in their residence while receiving even higher levels of care. Its fi rst resident was Micki Rosen; a pio-neering program for true pioneers!

In 1995, Sholom Home, Inc. and Community Housing

and Service Corporation joined together and became the Sholom Community Alliance, an organi-zation providing a full continuum of health and housing services. A single Board of Trustees directed six facilities: Knollwood Place, Menorah Plaza, Menorah West, Roitenberg Family Assisted Living, Sholom Home East, Sholom Home West, and the Leo and Doris Hodroff Pavilion for Memory Care.

In order to guard its future financial needs, the Sholom Foundation was organized. The

sole mission of Sholom Foundation is to raise sufficient endowment assets and annual revenue to pro-vide crucial dollars for Sholom services and facilities, and to pro-mote excellence in care to those served by Sholom. Together with the Auxiliary, their mission is to enrich, enhance, support, and bring comfort to the residents of Sholom.

The St. Paul arm of the orga-nization was relocated in February

2009 to the corner of West 7th Street and Otto Avenue, where a state-of-the-art facility was built. Named the Rossy and Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, it is home

to the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East, Bentson Family Assisted Living Residence and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Apartments. In addition, it also houses the David Feinberg Vitality & Aquatics Center, Jay and Rose Phillips Center for Memory Care, Roitenberg Adult Day Center, Sholom Johnson Hospice Center and Agency. In addition, Sholom operates its own home health agency, Sholom Home Care.

high demand that a new construc-tion project was completed in 2013 to add 16 more accommodations to the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East.

With pioneering comes growth opportunities. Both cam-puses have fl ourished and grown at a remarkable rate, and the natural wear and tear that results is requir-ing updates and expansion in order to keep serving our seniors in the standards of excellence for which Sholom has become known. What was once a small, quiet community with residents staying for nearly three years has changed dramati-cally (see chart at right). Both cam-puses now experience extremely high traffi c and utilization, which warrants frequent reinvestment and replacement of our furnish-ings, fi xtures, and equipment.

In 2013, both Sholom Home West and Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East received a Five-Star Rating from medicare.gov Nursing Home Compare Web site in overall quality, health inspec-tion, quality measures, staffi ng, and RN staffi ng. And as Sholom has evolved over the years, so have the needs.

We speak not to brick and mor-tar, but to the lives of people who seek refuge within our walls. With

your continued support, we can continue that pioneering spirit that our forefathers and foremoth-ers began back in 1908.

Looking good. Feeling good. Sholom Auxiliary

sponsors “Live 2 B Healthy® Senior Fitness”

at Sholom.

Food for Your Soul is a fundraiser through the Sholom Auxiliary to benefit the residents of Sholom and the more than 1,000 seniors Sholom serves each year. The concept for this event is based on individuals or couples through-out the Twin Cities who host an intimate dinner party gathering in their homes featuring a special guest.

“Special Guests” are our community’s movers and shak-ers or experts in their fi elds who attend one of the dinners and speak about their particular area of expertise. There are a wide range of options for guests to choose from—everything from arts to food and wine, politics, sports, enter tainment, business, academia, social change—and a wide variety of homes and hosts. Community members purchase tickets to attend the dinner party that is most intriguing to them.

Food for Your Soul provides an effi cient and effective way for Sholom Auxiliary to raise criti-cal dollars while keeping expenses low and attracting a diverse audi-ence. Hosts are asked to provide the dinner, and Special Guests are asked to participate at no cost to Sholom.

The idea for this event was borrowed from the Boston Jewish

Day School. A few years ago, Sholom’s then Board President, Wendy Baldinger, had a copy of the invitation for their event, “Matters of Taste.” Wendy brought the invite to the Marketing Committee meeting, handed it to us, and said, “I think we could do this for Sholom.” And that’s how Food for Your Soul was born!

The fi rst year, amid much skepticism, Food for Your Soul raised about $50,000—not bad for a fi rst-time event! For the second and third years, our community

really came forward, and we were able to raise about $100,000 each year to help the Auxiliary con-tinue providing the comforts

of home to our Sholom resi-dents, tenants, and clients.

This past year, money raised from Food for Your Soul went directly to support the Live 2 B Healthy®

Senior Fitness pro-gram that is now avail-

able at Roitenberg Assisted Living Residence, Knollwood Place Apartments, and Bentson Assisted Living Residence. We are very excited to see what the fourth year will bring!

The recipe for success with this event is due in no small part to our Auxiliary members who work tirelessly for months, plan-ning, brainstorming, contact-ing potential hosts and Special Guests to participate, securing corporate sponsors, and ensuring all the logistics for the evening to run smoothly. As you can imag-ine, this event literally takes a vil-lage, and we are so grateful for all of our hosts, Special Guests, com-mittee members, donors, corpo-rate sponsors and participants. We could not whip up this delec-table, nourishing event without their support!

Sholom

1. Become a member of Sholom and receive dual membership with Sholom Auxiliary. Choose from several membership levels, or become a life member! Use the envelope included in this report to show your support!

2. Become a Bed & Breakfast Backer. Join the Sholom devotees who understand and support our mission to care for the elderly. Bed and Breakfast Backers contribute

in increments of $25 or more per month to off set Sholom’s operating

losses. Backers are automatically members of Sholom. To become a Bed & Breakfast backer, call (952) 934.1664.

3. Acknowledge a special occasion or memorialize someone with a donation to Sholom.

To make a tribute or donation on our website at www.sholom.com, click on “Giving” and learn how! For more information on all of these options, call (952) 939.1664.

4. Volunteer your time and talents at Sholom.

Give an hour or a day, once or on a regular basis. To learn more about the countless volunteer opportunities available, call: (952) 939.1627 (St. Louis Park) or (651) 328.2068 (St. Paul).

Sholom AuxiliaryCreated to enrich, enhance, and bring comfort to Sholom residents and tenants through fundraising eff orts.

The Auxiliary has provided many “extras” for Sholom residents and tenants through the years, including purchasing special equipment and off setting the “in-house” beauty/barber shop fees.

Sales of Auxiliary-made “Delicious Knishes,” the Food for Show, Food on the Go cookbook, and Special Service cards all directly benefi t Sholom, so mark

your calendars now for the third Thursday in June, when the Auxiliary will bring you the

annual Food for Your Soul (FFYS) event, which continues to be a resounding success every year!

Auxiliary specifi c endowments are another way to support the Auxiliary’s eff orts. Endowments support specifi c programs such as communication; others are there for where the need is greatest. To fi nd out how you can create an Auxiliary endowment fund or to become a member, call 952.939.1594.

The dual membership program of Sholom and the Auxiliary has been tremendously successful. Be sure to renew your membership for the next year, or, if you aren’t already a member, you can join anytime!

Join online at www.sholom.com or call (952) 939.1638.

Sholom FoundationEnsuring Sholom programs, services, and facilities for our elderly loved ones, ourselves, and generations to come . . .

The sole mission of Sholom Foundation is to raise suffi cient endowment and annual funds to generate fi nancial support for Sholom services and facilities; and to promote excellence in care to those served by Sholom for generations to come.

Serving the fastest-growing population—seniors over the age of 65—and ever-decreasing government

reimbursements for long-term care makes the need for a reliable source of funding for Sholom more important than ever.

The Foundation’s fundraising eff orts are concentrated in the following: planned gifts, current and future pledges of cash, stock, property, and estate gifts that name Sholom Foundation as a benefi ciary in a will, life insurance policy, qualifi ed retirement fund or trust, or charitable trust—all of which may establish named funds to support Sholom in perpetuity.

To learn more about how you can make a diff erence with your gift to Sholom Foundation, call Executive Director Jœ l Mandel at (952) 939.1593. Donate online:www.sholomfoundation.com.

We need our community behind us now more than ever! Show your support for Sholom in several diff erent ways!
