PAGE 6 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Willamette University softball team, which will feature a young roster this season, achieved a 21-15 overall record in 2012, including 19-9 in the Northwest Conference (3rd place). Willamette’s conference record included a 2-0 road upset of then-top ranked Linfield College on April 14. The Bearcats also qualified for the four-team NWC tournament.

Willamette will field a young but talented team in 2013. Despite having only three seniors and two juniors, Head Coach Damian Williams is optimistic about what the season will bring.

“We will be a young and exciting team this year,” Williams said.

The Bearcats hope to capitalize on the return of several offensive standouts. Kelli Snyder (Sr., C) led the team with a .400 batting average in 2012. Snyder also ranked first on the team with a .514 on base percentage. She contributed 24 hits and 11 RBIs en route to becoming a First Team All-NWC selection.

Yvonne Drabin (Sr., OF) also returns as an offensive force for the Bearcats. In 2012, she played in 31 games with 28 starts, was third on the team with a .364 batting average, and contributed 24 hits and 11 RBIs. For her efforts, Drabin was chosen First Team All-NWC.

Heather Winslow (So., OF), will work to continue the success from her breakout freshman year. Last spring, Winslow started 33 games and hit .345 with 30 hits and 20 RBIs. She was a power threat for Willamette, and led the team with five home runs and a .644 slugging percentage. Winslow was named Second Team All-NWC for her efforts.

Allison Martin (Jr., UTIL) will provide valuable experience with both her bat and her glove. Martin hit .237 in 16 appearances last season while driving in nine runs. Just as important was Martin’s defensive consistency, as she committed no errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage. On the field, she will play in the outfield and at third base in 2013.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

PAGE 72013 SEASON OUTLOOK

Willamette’s incoming freshman class adds talent to the team as well. Williams believes that despite their lack of collegiate softball experience, the Bearcats’ five new players on the team will have an immediate and lasting effect.

“The freshmen are going to make a huge impact,” Williams said. “All five players will see lots of playing time.”

In the circle, Willamette will be aided by the return of Hayley Glantz (So., RHP). Last season Glantz started 16 games, pitched 89 2/3 innings and recorded 42 strikeouts. Glantz was particularly impressive over her last 10 appearances of the season, posting a 6-3 record with a 3.52 ERA.

Joining Glantz on the pitching staff will be freshmen Victoria Bradshaw (RHP) and Erin Bueser (RHP).

Bradshaw was named First Team All-League during her senior year pitching for Liberty High School. Bueser was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Henry M. Jackson High School and served as the team captain her senior year.

Other newcomers for the Bearcats are Ashley Pender (Fr., 2B), McKenzie Wasley (Fr., SS) and Angela Witty (Fr., OF). In high school, Pender was was named Second Team All-State in Nevada. Wasley, strong on defense, was a First Team All-League selection at Galena HS in Nevada. Witty, from Sheldon HS in Eugene, Ore., will provide depth in the outfield.

Willamette will open the 2013 season on Feb. 16 and Feb. 17, when the Bearcats travel to Clackamas, Ore., to compete in the annual Northwest Cup, hosted by Concordia University.

The Bearcats will play four games over the course of the weekend. On Saturday, Willamette will face College of Idaho and Corban University. On Sunday, WU will square off against the Oregon Institute of Technology and Concordia University.

Northwest Conference play begins for the Bearcats on Feb. 22-23 with a four-game series against George Fox University. Overall, WU will play 28 games in the NWC.

Willamette’s schedule includes a trip to Columbus, Ga., for the NCAA Division IIILeadoff Classic from March 8-10. In pool play, the Bearcats will take on the Universityof St. Thomas (Minn.), Methodist College (N.C.) and St. John Fisher College (N.Y.).

WU placed in the top half of the Northwest Conference in each of those eight season, including second place in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

The Bearcats began the 2012 season with a strong senior class deep in talent. The team gelled at the right time, winning 12 consecutive NWC games from March 17 to April 7. They outscored their opponents 84-14 over that stretch, including four shutouts victories.

Willamette concluded the 2012 season with a record of 21-15 (19-9 NWC), good for third place in the conference and a spot in the four-team NWC Tournament.

The Bearcats had eight players selected to the All-NWC team in 2012, including three on the First Team. Two players were chosen to the All-West Region team.

She also contributed on defense, achieving 76 putouts and five throwouts on runners trying to steal bases. Snyder was named First Team All-NWC for the second time, receiving recognition in 2010.

Yvonne Drabin (Jr., CF) finished the season third on the team with a .364 batting average while starting 28 of the 31 games she played. Drabin compiled 24 hits, including four doubles, a team-high two triples, and 11 RBIs. Drabin also achieved a 1.000 fielding percentage. She was named First Team All-NWC for her efforts.

Theresa Martin (Fr., 3B) excelled for the Bearcats during her freshman year, finishing second on the team with a .398 batting average. Martin played in and started 31 games. She led the team with 35 hits and 30 RBIs. Martin was named First Team All-NWC and earned Third Team All-West Region honors.

On the mound, the Bearcats were aided by the arm of Alex Watilo (Sr., P). Watilo went 14-7 on the year, posting a 1.88 ERA that was fourth-best in the NWC. She recorded 84 strikeouts and allowed only 111 hits over 130.2 innings pitched. Watilo was named Second Team All-NWC, and also Second Team All-West Region.Watilo’s selection marked four consecutive years of All-NWC selections.

Willamette had four additional players selected to the All-NWC Second Team: Jessica Barry (Jr., LF), Suzannah Von Trapp (Sr., DP/3B), Heather Winslow (Fr., 1B) and Mica Romero, (Sr., SS). Romero’s selection also marked four straight All-NWC selections (First Team 2009-11).

PAGE 21NORTHWEST CONFERENCE & THE NCAA

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.

For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.

Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

WU SOFTBALL FIELDThe Bearcats play their home games at the Willamette University Softball Field, which is located on the east side of campus. Highlights include a team locker room, hitting facility with batting cages, and covered dugouts.

Other features are bleachers, a scoreboard and an infield tarp that allows the Bearcats to playwhen many other fields are unplayable.

Overall, the WU Softball Field is a great facil-ity. The natural grass outfield and the dirt infield are well-maintained and provide for smoothplay throughout the spring.

When needed, the team can practice on oneof Willamette’s two artificial turf playing fields.

Other athletic facilities are Cone Field House for men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball, Sparks Field for men’s and women’s soccer, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the Willamette Natatorium for swimming, and the WU Tennis Courts. The Bearcats host cross country meets at Bush’s Pasture Park, while the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River and golfers practice at Illahe Hills Country Cluband Creekside Golf Club.

The Willamette softball team can practice in Cone Field House. There are two full-lengthbatting cages, plus room for bullpen throwing.

Willamette University has finished constructing a new softball hitting facility next to the WU Softball Field. The Wallace family, long-time fans and supporters of Bearcat softball, generously provided a leadership gift of just under $25,000 to help get the project underway.

“Our new indoor training facilityallows our softball players to practicehitting and pitching in all seasons,”Athletic Director David Rigsby said.

“The new hitting facility is having such a huge impact on our program,”Head Coach Damian Williams said.

In addition to the hitting facility, recent work at the field includes new home and visitor bullpens, and minor changes to the clubhouse. Willamette completed nearly all of the work in the spring of 2013.
