The LRS golf team has a handful of talented young athletes and head coach Nick Weishaar is hopeful he sees several of them on the state tournament golf list at the end of the season.

The team opens the year with 10 golfers, six boys and four girls.

Among them are some state veterans. Kristine Lamping will anchor the girls team, having already qualified three consecutive times for the state match.

Colby Starring and Trevor Jantz made the trip to state for the boys team in 2012 and are expected to qualify again this year.

state and qualified as an alternate.This year’s boys team includes

Starring, Jantz, Morley, Brian Campbell, Tyler O’Brien and Bryson Gering.

The girls team consists of Lamping, Heather Hennings, Caeli Ulrich and Charleen Porter.

“We will be competitive in league scores,” Weishaar said of the team.

On the boys side, Weishaar said he is looking for Starring, a senior, to elevate his game. He said Starring could play a prominent role at the state tournament if he steps up his play.

“If Colby wants to step up his play and be the leader of the team, he can make

it to the second day at state and place,” Weishaar said.

Lamping, also a senior, is expected to lead the girls team and figures to be a state contender.

“She is such a competitor, she just needs to let it go. Her body knows how to play golf. Her mind is what has to let it go,” Weishaar said.

The mental game is as important as the physical performance in golf and Weishaar said several LRS golfers have the skills to be top competitors if they can prevent their minds from impacting their game.

He likes Morley’s chances for a trip to state.

“If he can control the mental side of his game, he will be in there. He has a beautiful swing,” Weishaar said.

Jantz, who came out of nowhere to qualify for state last year, is expected to produce top results as well.

“He was the surprise of the year and I have high expectations for him this year,” Weishaar said.

Overall Weishaar likes the fact that he has golfers with varying degrees of experience and clear talent.

“It should be a fun year coming up,” he said. “There’s no reason the kids shouldn’t be successful.”

The team’s next match is Tuesday, March 26, at Colfax.

The size of the roster for the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague baseball team is not indicative of the team’s success over the years. With 12 players, the Broncos will set out Saturday during their season opener to carry on the program’s winning tradition and defend their Northeast 2B League Championship from last year.

During the past nine years the Broncos have advanced to the state baseball tournament eight times. Last year they were in the regional bracket, winning the opening round with a 4-3 victory over Warden before falling in the quarterfinals to DeSales.

The roster of 12 features eight returning players including key figures from last season, one freshman and one eighth grade athlete.

Head coach Jason Aldrich, as usual, has high expectations for his team even if the ranks are shrinking.

“The league is going to be tough again,” Aldrich said. “We were league champs last year, but it was a dogfight.”

The Broncos finished 17-2 in regular season play, 14-2 in league games and ended the year in a technical tie for first place with Northwest Christian. The Broncos were crowned league champions because they had

defeated the Crusaders during regular season play.“Northwest Christian is probably the number one

team to beat,” Aldrich said of the new season. “Their top two pitchers are returning and their only loss was the catcher. Colfax has improved and they play a lot of summer ball. We will be right in that mix. Our guys expect to win.”

Aldrich is joined by assistant coach Jason Hilzer and another familiar face who is volunteering a couple of days a week.

“Nick Ashley is volunteering for us three days a week. He has a lot of baseball experience,” Aldrich said. “He is really a natural at communicating and coaching the kids. He graduated last spring from Whitworth after five years of college baseball.”

Former assistant coach Dustan Arlt has taken over the middle school’s baseball program, which will help bring some synergy between to the two groups. Aldrich said the baseball ranks will be strong again in coming years as the sixth and seventh grade classes have large numbers of baseball players.

Looking over his roster, Aldrich has made the majority of the assignment decisions.

Senior Johnny Hernandez will play second base and shortstop, and invest some time on the pitcher’s mound.

“He’s a role player, a senior leader and will be at the

top of the lineup,” Aldrich said.Tyler Greenwalt has been a utility player for the

team. This year he will have a pair of important roles as a senior and four-year player.

He will be a pitcher and play third base.“He kept developing on the mound. He doesn’t have

a lot of game experience, but as a senior this is his last hurrah,” Aldrich said. “Playing third base is hard and I like to have an older guy there to handle the bunts and hard one hoppers.”

Bridger Smith checks in as the team’s starting catcher, having played last season as the backup catcher and outfielder.

Aldrich said Smith has been continually improving his game.

The shortstop is returning veteran Dylan Hartz, who will also answer the call to pitch when needed.

“He didn’t have too many innings on the mound, but he didn’t have to. We set close to a team record for runs scored last season with 10 or 11 runs per game,” Aldrich said. “He will be our short guy when the game’s on the line. That’s when he wants to be in there. He wants to be in charge. He did a great job of running the basketball team at point guard.”

Tyler Frederick will have dual roles as well, playing first base and pitching. This season he will likely be a reliever.

“Freddie is more suited to being a closer,” Aldrich said. “Maybe he will play a little third base and working some from second.”

Cort Ruzicka, a lefty, will find time to play first base. He also has been given the pitching assignment.

“Out of all the spring pitching, he has been the most consistent,” Aldrich said. “He had an inning or two at state. He is green and inexperienced. We’re teaching him the art of pitching. He takes instruction really well and is coming along fast. We’re working on his pick off move.”

Sophomore Matt Leffel is making a name for himself on the baseball diamond.

“He has been the biggest surprise, the brightest spot so far this preseason,” Aldrich said. “He will anchor down centerfield. His swing looks really good at the plate.”

Leffel joined the team while in eighth grade and has been improving annually.

“He has a natural swing that is nice and compact,” Aldrich said.

The roster has several players who are vying for a chance to play in the outfield. BJ White, Eric Shanaman, Pedro Huitron, Damian Rouleau and Matt Vercoe are all eager to start. Rouleau joined the team as a seventh grader, as the bat boy, but took part daily in the drills

at practice. White was with the team last year and hopes to see playing time as he improves.

Shanaman and Huitron, both sophomores, are first year players vying for a role.

Vercoe is a freshman from Sprague.“He has pretty good wheels for a big

guy,” Aldrich said.At the plate, there will be a number of

talented bats. Hartz led the team last year in hitting and most often was in the lead off position. Aldrich sees him as a number three hitter to help advance baserunners.

Smith, Hernandez, Leffel and Frederick will all play key roles in the top half of the lineup.

“Tyler is our clean up guy, he is the prototypical swing for the fences hitter,” Aldrich said.

“We will try to be smart hitters, aggressive at the right time,” Aldrich said. “It helped us at times last year when our bunting and base hits were executed well.”

While the hitting should be notable, don’t expect a lot of theatrics once the runners are on base.

“We’re not really a base stealing team,” Aldrich said. “I’m not really a big risk taker when it comes to that.”

Overall, Aldrich plans to utilize his typical approach to every game.

“It’s always the same, let the game dictate and after that, try to get guys out,” he said. “It will all depend on how well we execute on offense and how well our pitchers throw strikes.”

BASEBALL: Broncos expect to battle with NWC, Colfax for top spot

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team is expected to be a strong force on the court this season as 27 athletes pack the roster for the spring team. Under the coaching instruction of head coaches Liz Melville and Lorrie Swanger, and assistant coaches Nicky Talkington and Janna Gingrich, the young team is hoping to contend at the district and regional level.

The LRS team began the season with challenge matches to determine the strengths of each individual athlete. Melville said there are always ongoing challenges throughout the season, and expects some of the player positions to change over the next few months.

On the girls’ side of the team, Tracy Melville is playing in the number one singles position for the season and Lindy Brown is slated as the number two singles player. Both girls have previous experience as singles players and Melville expects both girls to compete far into the season.

Melville said Tracy’s strengths lie in her tenacity, quickness and ability to hit the ball well. Brown is known for her determination on the court and strength

The number one doubles team consists of athletes Kelly Melville and Alanna Wheeler. Both girls have experience with doubles matches, but played with different partners during the previous tennis season.

“They’re going to be tough,” Melville said. “They have solid ground strokes and have solid fundamentals.”

Melville said Kelly’s strength is in her serve and Wheeler succeeds at putting the ball away at the net. With the combination of experience and talents, Melville is expecting the team to have a successful season and be a force to be reckoned with on the court.

The next strongest athlete on the girl’s side is senior Rachel Barrus, who is expected to play either as the number three singles player or on the number two doubles team. Barrus proved herself as one of the top competitive athletes during the challenge matches in practice, and Melville is anticipating her to be extremely successful on the court this season.

The next two girls to fill the top spots on the girls’ side after the challenge matches are Kymberlee Webb and Carissa Peavey. The two girls will fill the

number three singles position or play on the number two doubles team during the regular season.

The team is also welcoming a few new beginning athletes who are showing potential to be large contributors to the team’s overall success. Athletes Elizabeth Schofstoll, Brooke Pichette and Amanda Yockey are the next in line on the girls’ team and expected to contend for number one and two positions during matches this

season. Melville said athletes Shaylee Britos,

Ariana Salazar, Amanda Howes and Tiana Cates are all performing well at practice and are expecting to rotate into a variety of positions throughout the year. Melville hopes to mix the girls up during different matches to see who performs best together and matches the talent of the opposing team.

On the boys’ side, Melville has high expectations and is excited to watch the development of the athletes over the next couple of years.

“In a nutshell, we have a great turnout of very young talent,” Melville explained.

Leading the boys is senior Zach Swanger, who qualified as an alternate to state last year and has been spending the off-season developing his game. Swanger plays as the number one singles player and Melville expects him to be a force to contend with.

The number two singles position for the Broncos is still yet to be decided, but Melville expects Stephen Ulrich to play in the position. Ulrich is in his third year as a tennis player and has been one of the most consistent players on the team.

The number one doubles team is expected to be Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday. The long-term potential of the two athletes creates a promising future for the Broncos’ doubles team.

“They are good friends who trust each other and both very good athletes,” Melville said of Alex and Canaday.

Justin Templin is going to be a key player as either the number two or three singles player, or a member of the number two doubles team. Melville said the sophomore has a history as a very good doubles player, but has recently excelled in singles. Regardless of where Templin ends up, Melville said he is going to be a huge part of the team.

Melville has a group of boys as contenders for the remaining spots on the number two doubles team and number three singles team.

Zeth Swanger and Grant Wengeler finished in the next highest places after the team’s challenge matches and Melville has not decided if the boys should play doubles or singles. Melville said Michael Wheeler, Josh Yow and JD McBride are all doing well for beginning athletes and is anticipating all three players to improve throughout the season.

years. Freshman Travis Ste. Marie has shown tremendous talent early in the season and Melville is looking to him to

be a contender during the regular season.“I would say both girls and boys

want to win league, and have a chance

too,” Melville said of the team’s season goal. “What I expect to be our biggest competition is St. George’s.”

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos track and field team has roster filled with 29 athletes slated to compete in the spring sport season. Head coach Randy Heidenreich is hoping to find success with the senior leadership of the team and using their experience to help motivate the younger athletes.

Assistant coach Guy Strot, who is returning to his second year of coaching for the Broncos track team, joins Heidenreich at the coaching helm. Strot focuses on instructing athletes in the field events, specifically discus and shot put.

Also joining the coaching staff part time is Greg Whitmore and John Kragt. Whitmore is focusing on field events and Kragt is helping coach hurdles.

The majority of athletes are newcomers for the Broncos team, but Heidenreich is happy to have a younger team, as it gives him an opportunity to learn each athlete’s individual talents and develop those strenths over the next few years. He is relying on the upper classman of the team to display leadership and coach the younger athletes.

Returning to the LRS team is senior athlete Matt Fryberger. Fryberger earned a trip to the state track meet last year and placed in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter. Heidenreich said Fryberger is focusing on the 100 and 200 this year, and will also run a leg of the 4x100-meter relay.

Another returning senior is Dustin Kommes whose primary event is the 800-meter. Kommes earned a trip to state as an alternate, and trained over the summer for the track season. Heidenreich explained that while Kommes’ strength is in the 800, he will also be competing in the mile and possibly run a leg of the 4x400-meter relay.

Also returning to the track is junior athlete Ryan Whitmore. Whitmore earned a trip to state last year in both races of the hurdles and will work to continue his success in the events this season.

On the girls’ side, Heidenreich is looking to Haley Campbell to lead by example in her primary event, discus. Campbell had a good, competitive season last year and Heidenreich is looking for her to continue her success by throwing over 100-feet consistently.

Senior Maddie Simons is new to the LRS team this year, but competed in track her freshmen year of high school. Simons is a thrower with a focus on discus.

Junior athlete Sydney Nelson is another leader on the field as a thrower. Heidenreich said Nelson is showing steady improvement in discus and will remained focused there, but will also be throwing shot put during upcoming meets.

Sophomore Heidi Hennings is returning to compete in the mile and

the 800-meter, as well as the pole vault. Heidenreich explained Hennings did extremely well as a freshman and he is looking for her to continue her success throughout the season. Hennings placed eighth in state in pole vault last year and Heidenreich is continuing to work with her in hopes of her returning to the state podium this year as well.

Another sophomore, Kate Schell, is expected to be a force on the girls’ team and performed extremely well as a freshman last season by earning a trip to state. Heidenreich said Schell is currently suffering an injury in her shins, but once she heals, will compete in the 100, 200, the 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay.

The five potential athletes for the 4x100 and 4x200 relays on the girls’ team are Schell, Caitlin Schoessler, Maya Wahl, Holly Nygren and Samantha Asmussen.

“In the freshmen group for the girls, there is a good nucleus of talent: Holly Nygren, Sam (Asmussen) and Dinah Gadberry,” Heidenreich said.

On the boys’ side, Heidenreich expects Kommes, Whitmore, Peyton Kiel and Tyler O’Brien to make up the 4x400-meter relay team if the athletes decide to compete in the race.

With a lot of young athletes, Heidenreich is waiting to learn each team member’s individual strength as the season progresses. Heidenreich expects Skyler Oestreich and Layne Hawks to step up and control the field events, especially discus.

Heidenreich also plans to coach O’Brien and Kiel in pole vault, an event neither athlete has participated in before. Kommes, Madison Mabie, and Matthias Ferderer will be the primary long jump athletes for the Broncos.

Junior athlete Wahl is returning to the team and Heidenreich explained her focus this year is on high jump.

“Maya Wahl is a pretty good leader for us,” Heidenreich explained. “She’s a bit leery about hurdles so her primary event is high jump.”

Heidenreich expects Wahl to compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles by the end of the season, as well as being a force on the relay teams.

Heidenreich is also keeping his eye on the potential of two young athletes, Nick Fleming and Andrew Witt, as well as a group of freshman girls. Witt is a freshman sprinter for the team and Fleming is primarily a 400-meter runner.

“We’re pretty young,” Heidenreich said. “In the big meets, we expect to score with the older kids in relays.”

“The key is to keep getting better each week,” Heidenreich continued.

Heidenreich said the goal for the season is for each individual athlete to improve continuously and to record their best times and distances at the end of the season. The overall goal is to have as many athletes as possible qualify for the state meet.

The LRS Lady Broncos take the softball field this season with a new head coach. They enter the season as self-proclaimed underdogs, eager to surprise unsuspecting teams when the season fires up.

Their first test comes today, Thursday, March 21, when they play host to Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia in a nonleague outing.

Paul McAnally takes the helm this season as head coach. John McGregor, the team’s previous head coach, will assist.

McAnally is a veteran of the Little League program, having coached for a number of years and most recently serving as president of the Ritzville Little League.

“I was ready for a new challenge,” McAnally said. “I have never coached high school sports, but I felt like the time was right to see what I could do at a higher level.”

McAnally is a student of the game of baseball and has played since the Little League level. He was inspired to coach by his own Little League coach, who had overcome physical disabilities to teach the game of baseball to his young charges.

McAnally launched his Little League

coaching career while living in Pendelton, Ore. When he moved to Ritzville, he picked up where he had left off, signing on to coach for two more years before moving to the role of president of the local Little League chapter.

While there are some nuances to high school fastpitch that differ from the game of baseball, McAnally said the basics remain the same.

“It’s still fundamentals,” he said. “We’re still teaching fundamentals of the game to these girls. Every day it’s a lot of repetition.”

The team roster features 12 players with varying degrees of experience. The early season games will give the team a chance to settle on who is playing what role based on specific situations.

McAnally said he likes the synergy on the field as his players make their way through preseason workouts.

“Our goal is to get better every week,” he said. “We’re underdogs and I love being the underdog. The girls have been to war together. They are buying in to what it takes to be a good team. People will play different positions depending on who’s pitching and we’re going to need everyone.”

The team roster features five seniors,

and while McAnally hadn’t named team captains at press time, he does have a trio of players he has dubbed his generals.

Senior outfielder Brittany Dew, junior catcher Soraida Chavez and sophomore shortstop Kim Gimmaka will perform key roles for the team and McAnally expects them to provide critical leadership during game situations.

Pitching is a key in fastpitch. The Lady Broncos will lean on two athletes, Taylor White and Jana Mattox.

“Jana had some experience last year on junior varsity and has stepped into a starting role,” McAnally said. “Her strength is her accuracy. She is learning to change speeds and learning different locations.”

White brings the heat.“She throws hard,” McAnally said.

“We’re working on her location.”Both players will also take

assignments elsewhere on the field when not pitching. White will play first base and Mattox will take up residence on second.

Looking around the field, McAnally has made numerous decisions in terms of player assignments. At the same time, he has players competing for other positions.

Second base will be staffed by Raeann Hoeft and Mattox. Gimmaka

will start at shortstop and be supported by Dew. Sara Aldrich gets the third base assignment.

The outfield has its own platoon of players. Dew will anchor the group from centerfield. She’s joined by Haley Neisinger, Jordan Schultz, Kiefer Niezwaag, Chrissy Field and Oceana Hochstetler.

Player by player, McAnally said he is finding key skills and attributes that will help the team during the season.

Chavez will be busy at catcher.“She’s very athletic. She started at

catcher and moved to left field last year,” McAnally said. “She has a good arm and good mechanics. Right now she is working to understand the mental part of the game.”

Hoeft, a freshman, has a large role to fill at second base.

“She has a very accurate arm and just needs more opportunity to play that position,” McAnally said.

Gimmaka is an up and coming athlete.

“She has the potential of becoming our best all-around player. She is very aggressive,” McAnally said.

Aldrich finds herself in a new position as a sophomore. McAnally put her at third base because of her consistent quality of play.

In the outfield, Dew will cover plenty of ground. The senior comes in to the season as the team’s most well-rounded player.

“She’s our best all around,” McAnally said. “She’s fast and she can do everything.”

Field brings an element of enthusiasm with her outfield play. McAnally said she provides a spark.

“She is the inspirational leader on this team,” he said. “I wish I had 12 girls who had the enthusiasm for softball as she does, on this team.”

At the plate, the team will need to generate baserunners and power them around the bases.

“Hitting wise, we have a good meat of the order,” McAnally said. “We have more power with Taylor, Jordan and Brittany. Taylor puts a good stroke on the ball.”

Look for the Lady Broncos to try some things with runners on the bases.

“Our philosophy is we’re going to be aggressive on the bases,” McAnally said. “Raeann, Brittany, Oceana, Soraida, Jana and Kim we’re going to do some running

New to the high school system and still learning his league opponents, McAnally said McGregor has provided the preseason insight. He expects Northwest Christian to be the class of the league, followed by Liberty and Colfax.

Northwest Christian advanced through the state tournament last year with a talented pitcher who returns this season.

Liberty also has a veteran pitcher. McAnally likes the Lady Broncos chances when it comes to competing with them.

“If we get the ball in play we can make some noise against them,” he said.

Overall, he expects the remaining teams to become locked in a dogfight for third and fourth place.

McAnally said his players are focused on their team and making improvements.

“Our emphasis this year has become the team and what it is to be good teammates including making practices and always doing your best,” he said.

McAnally had high praise for McGregor, who served as head coach for a number of years.

“The reason this program is alive today is because of John McGregor taking over the team when he was asked to,” McAnally said. “He keeps up the field and does all the prep work. He turned it into something the school can be proud of.”

The Tigercats track and field team is preparing for a successful season with a team comprised of primarily young athletes.

Head coach Tim Stamper has returned to coach the LaCrosse-Washtucna athletes, who are in a sports cooperative with St. John-Endicott to compete at meets throughout the season.

Stamper is looking to his two senior athletes, Sam Harder and Sawyer Hostetler, to provide leadership for the team. Both boys have competed in track for four years and demonstrate leadership in practice to help motivate their teammates.

Harder is competing in a variety of sprinting events, with a focus on the 4x100-meter relay and the 200-meter. Stamper is considering the possibility of creating a 4x400-meter relay team and in the hopes Harder will run a leg of the relay.

Hostetler is also running sprints and is the only athlete on the LW team throwing shot put consistently. Hostetler is focusing on the 4x100 relay and the 100-meter sprints at meets this season.

Darcy Stamper is returning to the

team to compete in high jump, long jump, 200-meter and the 4x100 relay. As a junior, Darcy has earned two trips to the state track meet to compete in the high jump. After recording a personal record of 6’2” his freshman year, Darcy shattered his personal best and the LaCrosse school record with a 6’5” jump at Lapwai last Saturday. Stamper expects Darcy to be at the top of the league in high jump and is hoping for an opportunity for a return trip to state.

Graham BeDell is the primary javelin thrower for the LW team and also runs the 200-meter. Stamper is considering the possibility of also having BeDell run the 800-meter during the season.

Sophomore Cameron Ellis is another sprinter for the boys’ side of the LW team and he is also competing in the long jump.

Jacob Johnson is returning to the track as the primary mid-range sprinter for the team. Johnson is competing in the 800-meter along with the possibility of throwing javelin.

Rodrigo, Julio Dominguez, SeungBum Seo and Mads Schmidt-Larsen are all foreign exchange students participating in their first year as track and field athletes. Stamper explained Rodrigo is one of the fastest athletes on the team and will be focusing on the 4x100 relay

for most of the track meets. Dominguez is also a sprinter for the

LW team, and will most likely be running the 200-meter consistently throughout the season. Stamper explained Dominguez also wants to learn how to throw the discus, with the intention of competing in meets.

Schmidt-Larsen is going to be a 100-meter and 200-meter runner, with a possibility of running a leg in the 4x100 relay. Stamper is also looking into having Schmidt-Larsen learn to long jump. Seo is going to be competing in the 800-meter.

Freshman Keith Zimmer is expected to bring balance in the sprinting and mid-distance events on the boys’ side of the team.

Weston Miller is the only distance runner on the LW side and will be running the 800 and the mile in every track meet. Stamper is also considering having Miller run in the 4x400-meter relay but is concerned about the amount of running Miller would have to compete in during every meet.

On the girls’ side of the LW team, sophomore Gail Harder is returning to be a leader for the girl’s team. Harder is competing in the long jump, with the possibility of running in the 4x200-meter relay, the 4x100 relay and the 100-meter

sprint. Freshman Madison Harder is

recovering from a sprained ankle but is planning to compete in the hurdles races, the long jump, 100-meter and the possibility of running a leg in the 4x100 relay.

Jazlynn Webb is also a freshman athlete for the girls’ team who is planning to compete in the long jump and the 100-meter. Stephanie Kelly is returning to the team to compete in the 100, the 200 and the hurdles races for the LW team.

Stamper expects the girls’ team to have a very successful season with the contributions from the SJE teams’ girls. Last year, the girls’ 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams both earned a trip to the state meet, and three of the athletes are returning to run a leg of the relays.

The team’s goal is to improve gradually throughout the season with the hope of competing and winning the district title.

Stamper believes the girls’ team has a strong chance of earning the district championship title with the talent of the athletes this year.

“The nice thing about track is that it’s a competition against someone and about competing against your own times,” Stamper said.

LW track expected to have successful year



LaCrosse-Washtucna tennis head coach Karyn Allen is expecting a successful and energetic tennis season from the 11 athletes on the roster this season. Allen is returning in her second year as head coach for the Tigercats tennis team.

Returning for the third year as the team’s number one singles player for the boys’ team is Justin Wargo. Wargo competed at the state tournament last year, and Allen is expecting Wargo to continue to succeed and compete late into the season again this year.

The number one doubles team for the boys’ team consists of senior Johnathan Holdren and junior Levi Allen. Both athletes are experienced tennis athletes but this is the first year that Holdren and Levi will be playing doubles together. Allen is expecting the two boys to bring balanced play to the court as their strengths on the court blend well together.

The number two doubles team for the LW boys consists of Wes Kelley and Douglas McKeen. The sophomores are working together on the court for the first time, but Allen expects to see balanced, consistent play from the boys as they develop as teammates.

Lura Potter returns as the number one singles player on the girls’ side of the team and brings with her years of experience on the court. Potter is known for her speed, endurance and determination and Allen believes if she stays healthy, she will be unstoppable. Allen is looking to Potter to compete late into the season and be the force to beat on the girls’ side in the league.

Newcomer to the courts, Brooklynn Hostetler, is already showing extreme potential as a dominate tennis athlete and the number two singles player. Hostetler is a sophomore and competed in track last year, but made the decision to switch to tennis with encouragement from Wargo.

“Brooklynn is going to go far. She’s

The number one doubles team consists of Chelsie Kneale and Amber McCabe. The two girls played for the LW team last year, but did not play on a doubles team in the past. Allen expects the experience and strengths of the two girls as individuals will mesh well on the court and make them a team that is hard to beat.

made up of two new athletes to the LW team, Delaney Stewart and Tamera Pearl. The two girls are working on developing their game as teammates and individuals, and Allen expects them to be a strong presence on the court by the end of the season.

“Our goal for the season is to keep improving: as a team and as individuals,” Allen said.

The balance between experienced

athletes and newcomers has allowed the team to strengthen early in the season, with the tenured athletes working with the newcomers to help develop their game.

Allen expects the entire team to continually improve and be a thorn in the side of many teams at the district and regional levels.

“We have lots of energy, a dynamite team and we’re going to go far,” Allen said.
