Its time again to study the smorgasbord of summer activities for youth along the Front Range. A family might have children who love to be in camps and ac-tivities all summer long, or may blend local family outings with just a few select classes along the way. Either way, the camp guide offers enough opportunities to put variety on your summer plate.

Mellany and Tony Archer from Greeley both work full time, so struc-tured activities for their 9- and 5-year-old girls work best for their summer-time routine. To some degree, we try to have weekly structure, says Archer. We have to in order to maintain ev-erybodys sanity. The Archer girls will always attend at least a few sessions of Vacation Bible School at local Gree-ley churches. These sessions are low cost and keep the girls entertained in a positive environment for four days straight, says Archer.

In contrast, Heather Janssen from Loveland, mom to four daughters ages 13, 11, 9, and 7, prefers no schedule at all. One of my summer strategies is to encourage my daughters abilities to en-tertain themselves and be independent, says Janssen. After running all year long through the school year, I really dont want to be sitting in a car, exhausted, during the summer, she says. Janssens girls take advantage of many local re-sources accessible to them by bicycle including Lovelands 20-mile network of bike trails, the Lake Loveland swim-ming hole, the public library, and the Spray Park at Barnes Complex.

No matter which approach fits your family, northern Colorado is rich in recipes for summer happiness. Uni-versities, city recreation departments, county programs and private organi-zations are launching summer camp plans right now. Browse a comprehen-sive list of camps in the resource guide on page 24. Parents of special needs children can search the listing of camp and activity resources on page 18of the guide. Dont miss the guides Free and Fun listing on page 24.

TasTe TradiTional camps Most local cities or towns offer some form of traditional day camps or recreational programs for children. For example, the Town of Windsor offers half-day camps for children ages 6 12. Campers enjoy in-door and outdoor games, crafts, swimming, guest speakers and a weekly field trip, says Matt Kraus, Recreation Supervisor for the Town of Windsor. All camps run under rotating weekly themes such as pirate week, do-it-yourself week, or celebrity week.

Windsor Parks and Recreation also offers supervised Adventure Trips most Wednesdays for ages 8 and older. Outings vary from hiking to horseback riding to Boondocks Family Fun Center.

The whitewater rafting trip on the Poudre is extremely popular, as is the Denver Zoo trip, says Kraus.

Liz Reiber of Timnath, mom to a 14-year-old girl, and two boys ages 11 and 10, says that their family does a lot with Windsor Recreation. Its closer for us than Fort Collins, she notes. In addition to lots of basketball and soccer, weve done their rock climbing wall, ei-ther as classes or on a day pass.

Another feature to look for through city recreation departments is some form of open gym. In Windsor, the open gym is a $2 entry fee for an entire

days use of volleyball and basketball courts. Kids go in and organize their own pick-up games, says Kraus. Check out the open gym schedule at http://windsorgov.com/index.aspx?nid=668.

If you want your child to try out an overnight camp with a specific topic or focus, some of your favorite organiza-tions may be following a recent trend of offering the variety of an overnight session in addition to their regular com-muter camps. Rocky Mountain Swim Camps at CSU offer their sessions as a choice between commuter (day) sessions or resident (overnight) sessions.

As summer schedules roll out, par-ents should ask each organization if the daytime activities come in an overnight format, and vice versa. Residential camps are a good choice because the kids can leave home and still be safe while making independent choices, says Demetria Dame of Loveland, mom to 14- and 11-year-old girls.

organization offers resources and group settings for skill building across a wide range of interests.

Todays 4-H is much broader than animal programs, says club leader Kara Rudnick. Young people ages 5 to 18 can study a variety of topics including the arts, sciences, psychology, leadership, and more. Go to http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/LARIMER/4h.htm to contact a 4-H club in your area.

For additional specialization in sci-ences, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Institutes run out of Preston Middle School in Fort Col-lins. STEM programs come in a variety of programs lengths and subject areas including biotechnology, robotics, video production, game programming, crime-scene investigation, vehicle engineering, and clean energy technology.

Three-hour-per-day sessions run for a week at a time, but STEM Institute participants might instead choose a week-long trip such as the oceanography trip.

The oceanography trip offers Front Range students a chance to observe oceanographers at work in various marine biology environments on the coast of California, says John Howe, Director of the STEM Institute. They get to partic-ipate in the work, too. Students have said

they are amazed by what they bring up in the nets on the floating lab. For infor-mation on the STEM Institute summer programs, go to www.steminstitutes.org/.

Elaine Brush, Program Supervisor for Loveland Parks and Recreation, rec-ommends their Lego and science camps for a break from athletics. The teachers are always bringing in new projects, so these camps are not the same from year to year, she says.

Loveland High School offers sum-mer robotics programs to middle school and high school students.

Whip up some WaTer funSummer and water are two ingredients that go together like cinnamon and sugar. Northern Colorado is chock full of swimming pools, summer swim clubs, water parks, and spray parks. Most cities and towns offer swim lessons through their recreation departments. And fam-ilies can relax by simply hanging out at the pool, or by parents getting some work done poolside while their children swim with lifeguard oversight.

We really enjoyed the Evans Munic-ipal Pool last summer, says Archer. The shallow part of the L-shaped pool was perfect for our younger daughter, so both girls had a lot of fun there. This commu-

nity pool offers the option of a summer membership, or a lower-cost punch pass with a certain number of visits.

Cheri Skaggs of Fort Collins and her 11-year-old daughter opt for joining a summer swim club at their community pool. The neighborhood pool and club-house are practically out our back door, says Skaggs. My daughter loves the outdoor summer swimming scene.

We love an occasional trip to the Greeley FunPlex which includes a water park, says Reiber. That can be a full day of entertainment.

If competitive swimming is more your young persons speed, several com-petitive swim clubs in northern Colo-rado run summer programs, including Team Vortex and Fort Collins Area Swim Team (FAST) in Fort Collins, Loveland Swim Club in Greeley and Loveland, and the Eaton Red Waves.

add aThleTic and ouTdoor advenTures The northern Colorado area is a natural buffet of possible athletic and outdoor activities during the summer, with hiking, cycling, trips to the mountains, and or-ganized sports among the options. Some families choose to build their own out-door programs. Such is the strategy of a single mom in Fort Collins with twin 9-year-old daughters. She runs her own business and can work from any location.

When the weather is nice we often head to Miramont Pool in Fort Collins, or to the mountains, she says. One of our favorite traditions is going to Snow Moun-tain Ranch, a YMCA camp near Granby with lots of kid activities, and sleeping in a yurt. Its not as rough as camping and its easy and safe for a single mom.

The YMCA of the Rockies also operates a full-activity site in Estes Park that offers horseback riding, arts and crafts, hiking trips, day camps, sleepover camps, and family campfire nights, among many other activities.

Reiber comments on the benefits of mixing in organized sports during the summer. First, it gives the kids some-thing to focus on so they arent bored, she says. But most of all, staying physi-cally active feels good to my kids.

Reiber and her family also plan a lot of local hikes or bike trips on the week-ends. Well go to places like Devils Backbone or Coyote Ridge, or ride bikes

on the Spring Creek Trail. If your child is in middle school

or high school, it pays to ask your local schools what types of sports programs they offer during the summer. This is an option for kids to play sports with their peers, but outside of a city rec-reation program. Many schools offer sports camps but they are not widely advertised outside of that school com-munity, says Dame.

Both University of Northern Colora-do (UNC) and Colorado State University (CSU) offer sports camps as well, in a variety of formats, from half-day camps to day-long formats that better suit work-ing parents. For UNC options, visit the website http://uncbears.com/information/camps/index, and for CSU camps, go to the link www.hes.cahs.colostate.edu/ysc.

fire up some WesTern flavorDont forget to consider a side of activ-ities that incorporate western traditions and history. Greeley Museums operates interesting programs that combine fun and history. Four weeks of camps such as Chuckwagon Cooking and an Archaeol-ogy Camp for ages 6 12 operate at the Centennial Village site in Greeley. (The Plumb Learning Center is undergoing restoration.)

    Our classes have been de-

signed to allow children to immerse themselves in another time and put their hands on history instead of just learning about it from a book, says Bill Arm-strong, Curator of Education and Living History for the Greeley Museums.

New this season, children ages 13 and up can choose from Historic Handi-works sessions taken together with a par-ent in support of joint, lifelong learning. These sessions include real blacksmithing, Native American pottery, and an adults level of Chuckwagon Cooking. Pottery making at this level will include more in-depth skill building such as heating the pottery, says Armstrong.

Children older than 12 can apply on a case-by-case basis to become junior volunteers for the younger camps. To discuss volunteer opportunities, contact Morgan Blattenberg at 970-336-4189.

The Farm at Lee Martinez in Fort Collins is a popular place for horseman-ship and farm activities. Registration for horsemanship camps, pony camps, and many of the day camps has already begun. Bridget Brownell, Recreation Supervisor for the Farm, highly recom-mends getting on their wait lists if class-es come up as full.

Parents often register their kids early because the programs do fill up, but then their plans change, says

Brownell. We are open to considering additional sessions as well when we see a long waitlist.

Farm Day Camps for 8- to 12-year-olds strive to do different activities each summer. Each two-week camp runs Tuesday through Friday, says Brownell. A session includes one overnight, and a day trip to a local agriculture site such as a dairy, feed stores, or organic farm, says Brownell.

Check the City of Fort Collins Recreator spring and summer publica-tions for lists of all the possible activities that The Farm at Lee Martinez has to offer, including Family Campouts and the Lil Dumplins sessions for very young children.

fold in fine arTsThe VanCo School of Art in Fort Collins survived its original building burning down in the arson case of 2011. The school is ramping up classes for kids, teens, and adults in its renovated Old Town building. Michelle Wetzbarger of Windsor and her 11-year-old daughter make time to commute to VanCo to take advantage of the fine arts opportunity.

Owner and primary instructor Coleen Cosner (Coco) says she likes to teach the classics, with kids summer camps covering both drawing and oil painting. Camps will run five days in a row in several sessions throughout the summer. Go to http://vancoschool.blog spot.com to keep abreast of the upcom-ing summer schedule.

Performing arts opportunities also abound along the Front Range. For ex-ample, both Studio West Dance Center (SWDC) in Fort Collins and The Stu-dio in Loveland offer programs for all dancer levels and interests.

We have fantasy camps such as princess camps for the little ones ages 3 to 7, says Studio West owner Jennifer Knostman. In addition to dress-up and fun events like tea parties, we also bring dance history to life. For example, we answer the question, Why are all ballet words in French?

SWDC Summer Adventure camps keep 6 12-year-old children moving and creating, with dance, moviemaking, crafts, flash mobs, and contests under an umbrella pop-culture theme. And dance newcomers can try the Use it or Lose it sessions. This

is an excellent opportunity to come in and try dance as fitness without having to com-mit for an entire year, says Knostman.

The Studio in Loveland has also offered Musical Theatre sessions in addition to summer dance camps and intensives. Both studios bring in guest teachers and even celebrities to enhance the more advanced level classes.

Many families whose children are musicians schedule their summer va-cations around marching band practice or summers-end summer band classes, all offered through the local school dis-tricts. CSU is tailoring this summers music programs to advanced high school musicians, by audition.

No matter what activities summer activities you choose, you can enjoy writing your recipe for family fun. Use the camp guide to preheat your ideas and bake up some summer plans that fit your familys lifestyle.

Diane Fromme writes about youth, fam-ilies, and international programs. Visit her website and parenting blog at www.dianefromme.com.

Keep a pulse on community calendars to discover all the free summer activities in northern Colorado. For example, put Larimer County Fair on your calendar for August 2 6, 2013. Although the carnival requires an admission fee, the educational halls and the farm, 4-H, and Splash Dogs exhibits are absolutely free!

Front Range health systems such as Banner Health and University of Colorado Health (formerly Poudre Valley Health) offer healthy recipe resources and fit kid programs throughout northern Colorado. For example, University of Colorado has offered Fit Families on the Move as a summer program designed to keep families moving and active during the summer months.

Experience a place to learn, grow, and relax at any of the northern Colorado libraries. Poudre River Public Library District, High Plains Library District, and the Loveland Public Library will all launch their summer reading programs, with prizes for reaching certain hourly reading goals.

Even though the thermometer doesnt say it, summer is right around the corner and its time to start thinking about what to do with the kids. If youre thinking about sending your kids to a summer day camp or overnight camp, here are some things to consider ensuring it is a safe environment.

accrediTaTionFirst and foremost, is the camp ac-credited through the American Camp Association? ACA accreditation en-sures that the camp has had a regular, independent safety audit that goes be-yond regulations in most states. This accreditation is the best evidence we have of the camps commitment to a safe environment for children.

sTaff Training Second, what type of training is re-quired for staff members? All staff should be certified in first-aid/CPR. They should also have additional train-ing for specific medical emergencies. If you have a child with special health-care needs (asthma, diabetes, allergies, ADHD, etc.) be sure to inform the camp staff prior to the first day and find out what type of training theyve received in regards to your health con-cerns. If you do not feel their training

is adequate, schedule a time with their nurse and key staff to provide the training that is specific to your child.

research camps Do your research. Ask other parents, read their website, interview the staff, ask for references.

helpful quesTions:What type of activities will your child be participating in during the day?

If transportation is provided for field trips, will they provide an appro-priate child restraint or do you need to supply one? Do they know how to install the child restraint?

How do they handle discipline issues? How do they handle children who

do not want to participate in particu-lar activities (not all kids are good at art or at sports)? Are there options to keep them engaged?

What type of healthy lunches and snacks do they provide? How do they handle food allergies for meals/snacks?

What is the counselor-to-child ratio? Younger children should have more counselors to provide active su-pervision to ensure curiosity does not

put them in danger. What type of supervision is pro-

vided for water activities? Camp staff should be heavily involved in the su-pervision even if certified lifeguards are be provided. The more eyes the better as drowning is a silent killer.

For an overnight camp, how safe are the cabins? How often are bunk beds inspected, do they have hand rails on stairs? Has the staff practiced evacuation drills in case of a fire?

What type of medical oversight is there? Is there a nurse that only comes one day a week or even less?

Not all camps are created equally. Staff changes on a frequent basis, so even if your child has gone to that particular camp before, ask about staffing and the schedule of events. You want your child to create great memories and make new friends while keeping them safe. Include your child in the decision-making process if they are old enough and mature enough. Happy Camping!
