A N O T E F R O M T H E C E OPicture this: It’s been a long day at work, and you’re tired. You turn onto your street. A neighbor on the sidewalk waves you over, eager to remind you about the upcoming children’s concert in the community center.

The day’s trials begin to fade as you transition from work to home. You stop at the community center’s “post office” to get your mail, and a group in the adjacent dining room calls out your name. Even though you’re empty-handed at this community potluck, you’re still welcome. Tonight, instead of supper from a microwave or a drive-through lane, you get to enjoy the convivial mood while savoring home-made lasagna.

In this age of suburban living, it’s hard to remember a time when neighbors came together. We seldom see our neighbors. We hardly know them. We sit in our air conditioned houses, shuttered against the outside world and too often turn for companionship to a large flat screen where fictional, two-dimensional strangers might feel more real to us than the people next door.

But what if you could live in a community where people routinely came together to help each other, to enjoy each other’s company? “Intentional communities” are springing up across the country, bringing together people who are eager for lives of genuine human connection and mutual assistance.

Now, picture that the neighbor on your street who greeted you tonight was Don, sitting in a wheelchair, giving you one of his famous million-dollar smiles. Imagine that the neighbor who called you over to the potluck was Robert, a young man with Asperger’s syndrome. And the cookies you enjoyed for dessert? They were baked by the always-smiling Alice, a middle-aged woman with Down syndrome.

Believe with me that by joining together in community with people who have developmental disabilities, all of us achieve richer, better lives.

Sixty-four years ago, Roy and Georgette Engler imagined a clean, safe and loving place where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) could thrive. They believed that all individuals deserved to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what their ability. With help from the community, the Englers achieved their dream by creating what we now know as Sunshine Communities.

With your help we continue to carry on their mission and values. With your help we dare to imagine, believe and achieve our dreams of creating community.

T H E Y E A R I N R E V I E W

As we imagine a future for Sunshine and the people we serve, we see a movement away from our campus-based facility to homes where the individuals we serve can be part of a neighborhood. It’s not enough for individuals with developmental disabilities to live in the community.

Our dream is fulfilled when they are a true part of the community. With this goal in mind, Sunshine’s Board of Directors approved a plan to create community residences for individuals currently living in our institutional setting. This is a large undertaking but we believe with the help of our entire community we can achieve the goal of moving 32 individuals from our campus to community residences by 2017.

Focused on providing employment opportunities in the community. Georgette’s Grounds and

Gifts had been employing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community for eight years, long before the Governor’s Employment First initiative. In response to that initiative we began work to match individuals to jobs with local businesses, including the Quilt Foundry, Anderson Stores, McDonald’s and others. These businesses have discovered the skills and gifts that people with IDD bring to the workplace.

Began work to create a community art center in the former Art Crest Building. This partnership with the

city of Maumee and Bob Reichardt will allow us to expand our community employment options to individuals with IDD who have an interest in the creative arts. We expect to engage the larger community in this endeavor, providing opportunities to work and learn side by side with individuals we serve.

Offered recreational programs for individuals who might otherwise be isolated from opportunities

for social interaction. Many individuals learned to cook, attended ball games, dances, dinner parties, and just enjoyed each other’s company. Our bell choir expanded and performed in several public venues including the annual Black Swamp Benefit.

Benefited from the gifts of many donors, grants, foundations and volunteers. The Black

Swamp Benefit, organized by a volunteer board on behalf of Sunshine and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), contributed $57,000. The Sunshine Walk, 5k Run and Roll drew more than 700 participants and raised $41,000. Another year of gratitude for the many people in our community who support our mission.

Renewed our focus on quality by exploring what’s important to the people we serve, and then helped

them experience it. What people want can be as simple as a daily walk and as exciting as a visit to the local radio celebrity in his studio. We’ve supported individuals to achieve what they imagine, helping them believe in the possibility of dreams.

Became certified to serve children who depend on ventilators. Sunshine is one of few

intermediate care facilities in the state that serves individuals who depend on ventilators. This year we successfully achieved a new state certification in pediatric ventilator care. Right now these children are living in hospitals. Our certification will offer them the opportunity to move out of the hospital and enjoy more of the activities that children should experience growing up.

Support from Legacy GiftsIn 2013, legacy giving to Sunshine grew as new bequests totaled over $350,000 from the estates of seven individuals. Support from our CommunityIn 2013, Sunshine was the grateful recipient of community support that totaled over $1 million dollars in gifts and grants, and over 10,832 hours of volunteer time. These gifts continue to allow us to offer opportunities to improve the quality of life for those we serve.

Some major initiatives that benefitted from these gifts in 2013 were:

• Enhancement of our transportation program with the purchase of new busses. Our focus on successful employment depends on reliable transportation, and these gifts significantly help individuals get to work.

• Renovation of bathrooms in our community homes to better accommodate the needs of individuals who are aging and require adapted bathrooms.

• Development of an art center scheduled to open in 2014. Gifts have covered the cost of equipment and supplies.
